Zinn’s annual salary will start at $1.35M and increase by $50K each year. Additionally, Zinn will earn a bi-annual retention bonus of $150K after two years of service. Annual performance bonuses, which cannot exceed 50% of her annual salary include, in football: 7-8 wins: 5% of salary; 9-10+ wins: 10% of salary; Top 25 finish: 10% of salary; postseason bowl berth: 10% of salary; College Football Playoff or Big Ten Championship berth: 10% of salary; CFP semifinal: 10% of salary; and CFP championship game: 10% of salary. In men’s and women’s basketball (cannot exceed 40% of annual salary) 20 wins: 5% of salary; Big Ten regular season title: 5% of salary; Big Ten Tourney championship: 5% of salary; NCAA, NIT, or other postseason tourney berth: 5% of salary; play in NCAA Sweet 16: 5% of salary; play in NCAA Elite Eight: 5% of salary. Zinn is also eligible for several Learfield Directors' Cup-related bonuses that cannot exceed 30% of annual salary. Additionally, Zinn can earn a bonus of $10K for every $1M in new revenue generated outside of Big Ten revenue; $5K for every $1M in revenue generated from re-securing deals the university has in place at the commencement of the term; and $10K for every $1M in revenue generated that exceeds deals the university has in place at the commencement of the term. Zinn may terminate the contract at any time during the term, including for "good reason” and would owe Rutgers 25% of her annual salary (at the time of termination) in an amount equal to what she would receive through August 5, 2030. Should Rutgers terminate the contract without cause, it will owe Zinn a "severance payment" equal to the full base salary it would owe her through August 5, 2030. (link)

Northwestern AD Mark Jackson Q&As with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna as the pair run through some key industry issues & needle-moving in Evanston. Jackson on the importance of the new Ryan Field: “I think one of the concerns when you're in the Big Ten, particularly now, is your ability to go out and generate long-term viable revenue. And from Northwestern, prior to this project, there weren't a lot of levers to pull, right? We had basketball going, Welsh-Ryan, again, the Ryan family put a lot of money into that, and that has generated resources we've never had before. But we talked about it, right? The old Ryan Field, and even the new pop-up, as much as we've tried to create premium in there, it still pales in comparison to what we compete against, right? So to do this project the right way, to be realistic, to be uniquely Northwestern, this isn't 80,000 seats, it's 35,000. [...] We know we're dialed into one of the most attractive corporate bases probably in the world, a half-hour away, and that's going to be an element of this stadium, too, that was really attractive to me, to go out and get these corporate partnerships and have tremendous momentum early on with those kinds of relationships, cornerstone partners. To make it a 365-day type of event space, too, I'm really excited about. I've never done that before. We've talked about concerts, community events. We think there's opportunities for professional sports organizations to utilize the space.” Lots more. (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua talks about the importance of bringing in former men’s hoops star Pat Garrity as GM of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, particularly within the context of the Fighting Irish losing women’s hoops standout Olivia Miles to TCU in the offseason. “When you’re on that plane flying home from that (TCU) game and the world is changing underneath you, you have to get out ahead of it. Going forward, we’re going to be better prepared to manage that moment of change.” Hiring Garrity, Bevacqua believes, will keep Notre Dame from being as blindsided as it was by Miles’ departure last spring. “We had to have someone who’s waking up every day thinking about roster retention, transfer portal, movement of players. What is the modern landscape of women’s college basketball? As a head coach, you can’t do everything.” (link)

UNC Wilmington AD Michael Oblinger and Stony Brook AD Shawn Heilbron sit down with Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss their strategic preparation and execution post-House, share their thoughts on the NCAA governance structure and weigh in on what role Congress could play in this new era. Heilbron is operating under the assumption something will get done in Congress. “I feel like there’s some traction. I’m not there, so I don’t know. I maintain some optimism. There’s a little bit of be careful what you wish for in all of this because what does that mean? But I think the interest is there and ultimately this is about having a broad, national framework rather than the patchwork of state laws. So, we need it. I do think it’s coming and whatever form it is, I think it will be welcomed.” Oblinger notes that UNCW is always mindful of the need to generate more revenue and remain diligent about controlling expenses and says: “We’ve been through some conversations at the league level that are uncomfortable, but are we doing the things that we should be doing? Just because we did them last year or two years ago or whatever it may be, that’s not good enough in a lot of ways. So, being strategic – are we spending money wisely? Because if I'm competitive and Shawn is competitive, that’s going to be good for our league as a whole and elevate the whole thing. We kind of threw out the playbook a little bit. … There’s no real bad ideas here. Let’s talk about what we’re doing. If we can drive additional revenue or we can save a dollar here and there, be more strategic, those are all positive things for us.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Clemson announces a series of updates to its football game day experience, including a modification of the Gathering at the Paw tradition to comply with the ACC’s sportsmanship policy. “Gathering at the Paw will begin at the conclusion of the alma mater. Fans should stay in their seats, and then may access the field via the Hill and the West stands once the Alma Mater is complete.” Additionally, all concession stands in the stadium will transition to fully cashless transactions, and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at designated Aramark concession stands and kiosks at fall athletic events. “Complementing this initiative, Clemson Athletics and Aramark have partnered with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety to launch a designated driver program, encouraging fans to make safe and responsible travel decisions. Fans who register as designated drivers will receive a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage at the concession stands courtesy of Aramark.” (link)

Iowa announces the Duke Slater Field emblem at Kinnick Stadium will be relocated ahead of the 2025 football season. Originally installed prior to the 2021 season, the emblem currently sits at each 25-yard line. It will now be moved to the north and south end zones of the field. Hawkeyes Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives/COO Joe Parker: “We want to be clear that the field naming is not changing and will remain Duke Slater Field. The NCAA approved the use of corporate logos on the field during regular-season games in the same location where we’ve proudly honored one of our greatest football legends. By relocating the recognition to the end zones, we preserve Slater’s legacy while also creating a new opportunity to generate revenue in support of our student-athletes.” (link)

NCAA Senior VP of Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon reflects on an almost 40-year career at the national headquarters with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy mentioning that for the soon-to-be-retiring Lennon, the idea of working in Indianapolis was intriguing, but not something he expected to do for the majority of his career. Lennon: “I didn’t know what regulatory work was going to be for me. But what I have found in this work is that it is incredibly important.” As for how Lennon sees the current inflection point of the industry: “We find ourselves in this interesting point in time where all of us have something to do to better this environment of college athletics. The NCAA, our campuses, our conferences, in Congress and, dare I say, even the fans, like the people who are betting and harassing young people — if we all want sports to be better, we all have a role to play in this.” NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby reflects on Lennon’s tenure: “What Kevin brings is credibility from athletic directors, from university presidents, from commissioners. People know Kevin is giving you what his honest feelings are and there’s just no agenda there. It’s never ‘The Kevin Lennon Show.’ That remains constant in this tumultuous world. In this chaotic world where there is, I think, an erosion of trust among some corners of college sports. We’re going to miss Kevin, because he has sort of risen above that. The national office has a trust level, in part, because of Kevin.” (link)

Football or gold medals? That’s the question Coastal Carolina’s Joe Moglia poses in an SBJ op ed while noting that all the worries over the post-House settlement financial pressures of fielding competitive football and basketball squads causing damage to U.S. Olympic prospects seem to be well-founded. With collegiate athletes serving as a critical pipeline for American Olympians, the cut or consolidation of 32 Division I Olympic sports programs so far across the country since the settlement and more likely coming as administrators and ADs come to term with rising program costs, Moglia mentions that without institutional support non-revenue sports will likely suffer as will the U.S. medal count. While larger departments will have more available funding to provide needed support, smaller departments will be forced into tough choices, and if they want successful football and basketball programs, they’ll be forced to make cuts elsewhere. Moglia: “If we want to preserve America’s Olympic dominance against our rivals, we need to protect these sports at the collegiate level. That’s our training ground. The only way to do that is to spin off football and basketball so that they can truly be run like businesses, and so that nonrevenue sports can thrive as truly amateur endeavors, for the love of the game. There’s not much time left on the clock to figure this out. Our Olympic prospects depend on it.” (link)

The State’s Chapel Fowler seeks to answer the question of how Clemson athletics will be financing an additional $26M in additional expenses. According to Tigers AD Graham Neff, the answer is by increasing total revenue by about $40M YoY to offset those new rev share and scholarship costs. As for where that revenue’s coming from, the largest earnings are expected to come through the ACC’s newly-adopted “success initiative” and “brand initiative” models where league schools will earn additional money for postseason success in football and men’s and women’s basketball and for the highest football/basketball TV viewership. Clemson “anticipates earning about $120M in ‘new revenue’ over the next six years ($20M annually) off the ACC’s success and brand initiatives. And that’s before any additional millions that would come off a long CFP run. Those earnings make up half of Clemson’s $40M in new revenue.” Neff: “That’s a significant lift for us.” Alcohol sales will also help foot the bill as will efforts through Clemson Ventures. More Neff: “Ticket prices were increased in a very thoughtful, analytical manner, as were IPTAY membership levels. That’s not something we take lightly. … That’s one that I’m incredibly sensitive on.” The last component to increasing total revenue will come through expense management, as Neff puts it, while noting there could be reductions in “how we travel, where we travel, how we schedule administrative staff and support. … While we’re proud and have been so focused on revenue generation, that expense management is significant. There’s a lot of that type of efficiency and lens from a higher ed standpoint. And so we need to do our part with that as well. … There’s a lot of really strategic things that we’re pulling on on both sides of the lever — revenues and expenses — in order to satisfy the new $26 million dollar-plus expense. That’s really important for us.” (link)

The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel sat down recently with Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock to discuss the urgency of addressing new departmental funding challenges in the new revenue-share era. Babcock: “For us it’s really simple. We need to get better (in football) because the better you do, the more money you get from the ACC. So, the recipe is still the same. Be really good in football. Be good in some of your other sports. Don’t operate under scandal and have very good academics. But yes, there’s a sense of urgency in the near-term.” With an August 18th meeting looming where Babcock will make a presentation to the university’s Board of Visitors, Teel reports that the “central theme will echo what he voiced to me: While the department must do its part, university help is essential if the Hokies are to compete successfully against their ACC rivals, let alone national peers.” How might the board respond to his appeal? Babcock: “With campus, we’re extremely confident and very close to making (this) a sustainable model. … We’ve had that conversation. (University president Tim Sands) is committed to it. Our Board of Visitors is committed to it, and now we’re just figuring out the best way to go about it. … I do feel the (ACC’s) settlement with Clemson and Florida State, as painful as that was in a lot of ways, does give the ACC a good chance at longer-term stability, but I and we in this profession would be foolish to not think there’s another inflection point coming toward the end of this decade. Is it one super league? Is it a relegation system like European soccer? Is it two leagues? So absolutely it is a race to not only figure out this new era, but to try to be positioned as best you can should anything change.” (link)

The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel provides the highlights as UCF AD Terry Mohajir recently met with fans to answer questions while offering his view on the ever-changing collegiate athletics environment. On the state’s Board of Governors approving a measure for schools to utilize auxiliary funds to support athletic departments: “We’ve had a lot of discussion about this and what does this mean. That does give us another opportunity to use some funds, but that’s a color of money that you have, but you have to have the funds. Our university is looking at those colors, because even some of those auxiliary funds are tied up with debt service and things like that. I would not use it for rev-share. I would probably use it for retiring debt or anything that can help us with our operating budget. We have less debt than a lot of schools do in our league, but I would use that for debt and some other operating stuff.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers notes that it “will be interesting to see if this year's slow coaching carousel is a blip on the radar screen, or a trend moving forward as schools are going to be a little tighter with [money]. There were just 21 head coaching changes in NCAA Baseball this summer.” Per Rogers’ included data, 21 marks the lowest head-coaching change number in at least the past nine years and is down significantly from 2024 when there were 44 reported moves.
