Jamestown President Polly Peterson sits down with WDAY’s Dom Izzo to dive into the Jimmies’ move from NAIA to NCAA DII. In evaluating the move to the NCAA, Peterson states UJ coaches were supportive of the move “if we would commit to them. One of the things that they tell me a lot is, ‘Polly, you always talk about winning matters, so what does that mean in Division II? And how long does it mean that we have in our effort to start to win?’ […] We had made a lot of improvements to the way coaching culture was on campus, but it’s that little piece of what do scholarships look like, what does enrollment look like and those things we had to work our way through.” Peterson believes the systematic increases in resources have set up the department with a less drastic jump into the association. On going through the expedited membership process, Peterson has been very involved, adding: “We’re the first to go through the accelerated process, which means this year we have to be perfect. We have to be ready. We didn’t get that extra year and that was a good thing because our athletes don’t have to wait that extra year for postseason.” Peterson’s goal for athletics: Go into the NSIC successfully, be a competitor in all sports and be a champion in 3-4 sports. The NCAA and national nonprofit Team IMPACT announce a collaboration to foster long-term relationships between collegiate student-athletes and youths to inspire and promote belonging, empowerment and resilience by matching children facing serious illnesses or disabilities with college sports teams at various NCAA championships. NCAA President Charlie Baker shares more with CBS Mornings’ Nate Burleson: “The work that they do for young people who are dealing with debilitating and, in some cases, fatal diseases, to give those kids and their families a team that they can be part of and a set of relationships that, in many cases, long outlast the time somebody spends for their four years in college is really powerful. … The other thing it does, and I’ve talked to a lot of college athletes who've been part of Team IMPACT, is it reminds those kids over and over again of the gifts they’ve been given and how they should appreciate the opportunities that they possess as a result. … When you have a teammate who can’t play and will never play and is dealing with much bigger things than you, it has a pretty powerful impact on the way you think about the skills and opportunities you’ve been given.” (link, link)

CollegeAD reports West Florida, Nova Southeastern and Lincoln Memorial have contacted ASUN and UAC officials “and have offered up a letter of intent, officially declaring interest in making the Division I jump.” This comes after Division I adopted a moratorium on new members jumping up to DI through 2027. UT Dallas has rolled out episode one of its New Horizons series, documenting the Comets’ transition to DII. The behind-the-scenes content includes AD Angela Marin in the virtual meeting where UTD was accepted into the provisional membership process and this nugget from LSC Commissioner Jay Poerner on the league’s FloSports deal: “This is the second largest media rights deal that FloSports have ever signed at the collegiate level.” (link)

U.S. Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) joins Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman’s SportsWise podcast to break down the SCORE Act and says the “initial draft was incredibly broad. It went far beyond NIL or fair play and eligibility rules. And even with some negotiated improvements, it’s still too broad. The lack of a sunset clause creates the grounds for the NCAA to do largely whatever they want into perpetuity. … If you sunset an antitrust exemption, it shapes the behavior of the NCAA, because they know they’ll have to come back to Congress. Without that, you risk handing them a blank check forever.” Trahan also contends that the “best way to characterize the SCORE Act is to say very clearly that the bill started out as fulfilling the wish list of the NCAA, the Power 4 conference commissioners, and by and large, it stayed that way. Everything that the NCAA has asked Congress to codify, designating college athletes as non-employees, shielding the NCAA from antitrust liability and preempting stronger state level protections – that was baked into the SCORE Act from the get-go.” On the topic of student-athlete employment, Trahan explains that “I've heard directly from athletes who don't want to be classified as employees. And I've heard from others who do. I've also heard from some who don't want that door just completely closed to them and not having any leverage down the road. But I think the throughline in all those conversations is I haven't heard a single athlete say that they feel like they have enough of a seat at the table in college sports and would turn down the opportunity afforded to them through a collective bargaining agreement, even if it's a novel form that doesn't include compensation. And I think the SCORE Act, it just ends that discussion entirely. I think that's a mistake.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

Inflation held steady in July, “keeping a Federal Reserve rate cut in play for next month,” according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Wolfe and Nick Timiraos. Consumer prices were up 2.7% in July from a year earlier, unchanged from June’s gain and below the 2.8% rise expected by economists surveyed by the WSJ. (link)
