The Tampa Bay Times’ Joey Knight examines what precisely USF means when it says it’s looking for a CEO for its athletic department, and USF Vinik Sport & Entertainment Management Program Director Emeritus Bill Sutton, who has chaired the Bulls’ last two AD searches, says the CEO “will have very little to do with day-to-day running of the athletic department. [The new title] means [USF Board of Trustees Chair Will Weatherford] wants somebody skilled outside of college athletics because the world’s changed so much. So he’s looking for somebody that has either a Fortune 500 background or pro sports background or a combination thereof. Maybe some college experience as well, but the college experience is probably not going to be the kicker.” Knight subsequently notes the “Bulls’ new CEO must not only be an elite communicator, but a bold innovator; someone well-versed in the art of agent negotiations and payroll management. Astuteness in collective bargaining – which could come to fruition over time – would be a bonus. So would a robust set of contacts – at the conference and national levels – that could benefit the Bulls when the critical next round of league realignment occurs and the Bulls jostle for a spot in a Power Four conference. Those other duties – scheduling, compliance matters, facility management, etc. – can be handled by a staff of associate ADs.” (link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman posits that “despite Oklahoma’s four College Football Playoff appearances and the fifth-highest win total in the sport since 2010, a case exists to argue it could slip toward a fate that befell its once equally powerful Big 12 rival, Nebraska.” Sooners AD Joe Castiglione insists that won’t happen in Norman: “Oklahoma is going to be great. We’re not getting caught up in any hyperbole. We don’t need to. Everybody else [talks]. We are responding to questions, of course. We’ll give you straightforward answers, explain what’s going on. We’re living it every day. We know we’re in a league with so many great teams. But that’s exactly where we want to be and what we signed up for – and we couldn’t be more proud to be a member of the SEC.” Castiglione goes on to say: “I understand we’re in a performance business, and we have to go out on the field of play to prove ourselves. But I feel really confident in the moves that we’ve made, and I’m excited for the season ahead.” (link)

South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati chats with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about the partnership with Blanchard Machinery and how the Gamecocks plan to continue generating more revenue moving forward. With revenue sharing set to increase each year, Donati adds: “The name of the game is how you grow the pie and how you bring more value to everything you’re doing. This is certainly that. We were fortunate. There’s only four SEC schools I’m aware of that have this kind of partnership lined up. I’m sure others will follow, but this was a big one for us as you start chipping away at that unbudgeted expense that we’re going to be on the hook for.” With regards to generating more revenue, Donati explains: “The multi-use district outside the stadium, that one is in the works. We’re in the RFP process there, and we’re talking about some really interesting strategic partners that can bring a lot of value to this area and are really exciting. As we get into the fall, you’ll start seeing some stuff there. Once we get through the stadium, we could do more with Colonial Life Arena. Those premium spaces need to be touched up at some point. It’s probably not an urgent need, but it’s something that’s on our radar. We’re taking out a tremendous amount of debt on this [stadium] project, so there are limits to that. The faster we can get this paid off, the faster we can do other things, like maybe even more Eastside premiums. So as big as the stadium announcement was, there’s probably more there.” (link)

Freshly minted Mississippi Valley State AD Alecia Shields-Gadson talks about her vision for the department and notes there is “so much untapped talent that it’s just really going to be up to me to inspire the coaches to just really go out and we really want to expand the brand. And those individuals that don’t know Valley will soon know Valley. … My vision for MVSU Athletics is one of growth, excellence, and unwavering commitment to our most prized possessions—our student-athletes. The goals are focused on competitive success, sustainability, and expanding our footprint, while creating a supportive and enriching environment where student-athletes can thrive academically, athletically, and personally." Kennesaw State and VyStar Credit Union announce a 10-year, $4M partnership that includes naming rights for the home arena of the Owls’ men’s and women’s basketball and women's volleyball programs, which will be rechristened as VyStar Arena. Owls AD Milton Overton: "We are thrilled to partner on the VyStar Arena. This landmark naming reflects the soaring rise in Kennesaw State University. With our competitive presence in Conference USA basketball and volleyball, record-setting attendance, and national viewership, this partnership with VyStar will shine on a grand scale both locally and nationally. I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone at KSU and VyStar who made this transformative moment possible. I look forward to Owl Nation making VyStar Arena one of the biggest home court advantages in the country." (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart shares more about UK’s decision to remain with Nike: “There were a couple things. We got more product, which is really important for us. There is some money obviously involved in some of these other deals. We used an opportunity to go grab more product for our program. We’re spending more money away from our contract previously. We wanted to begin to do a better job, I think, of managing our gear and things that we’re getting back. I feel like we’re in a good spot. That landscape will continue to change as well. I’m not concerned that we didn’t get a good deal. … We really have enjoyed our partnership with Nike. They've been great to us and we feel really good about how we would be able to manage it. There’ll be savings on our side that will be reflected more in the dollars.” (link)

Alabama A&M AD Paul Bryant covers several topics with Fox’s Huntsville affiliate, including the launch of SWAC TV, which he believes is “going to be a game-changer,” adding: “We’re going national, and those dollars will come back to the institutions.” Bryant likens SWAC TV to the SEC Network’s early days, noting: “They started like this, now they’re their own network. … That’s what I see for SWAC TV, something that’s bigger and better, and the monetary value that we're gonna receive from that, it is going to be tremendous.” Bryant also comments on partnering with Amazon as the title sponsor for the Magic City Classic, describing the company’s presence in Huntsville as transformative: “When you bring two entities together…and get a title sponsor like Amazon, it elevates everything. It’s about showcasing what they can do for the Classic and our schools.” Bryant says of the House settlement that “we’re better together, stronger together. … It’s time to do right by our student-athletes.” Bryant credits SWAC Commissioner Charles McClelland for his leadership, noting the SWAC was among the first mid-majors to opt in. “You’re going to see things happen in our conference that haven’t happened ever…opting in was the right thing to do.” Full interview. More from Louisville AD Josh Heird’s conversation with the Louisville Courier Journal’s Payton Titus. As far as working with ever-changing rules and industry regulations, including the CSC and NIL Go, Heird notes there will be bumps in the road. “If anybody thought this was gonna be seamless, then the joke's on them. At the end of the day, as you're trying to make the biggest adjustments that an industry has ever seen, if you don't have this expectation that it's going to be a little rocky, then you're going to be disappointed. ... We got a long way to go. And it's not going to be six months from now. This is going to be a slow process, but hopefully in two or three years, it's like, 'Hey, we really have a good understanding of how college athletics is going to operate in the future.’” (link)

New Mexico Deputy AD/CRO Jalen Dominguez sits down with the Albuquerque Journal’s Matthew Narvaiz to discuss the Lobos’ approach to the rev-share era and explains how the Lobo Alliance fits into the picture: “The Lobo Alliance is the alignment between the collective (505 Sports Foundation), the Lobo Club (fundraising arm), and Lobo Athletics itself. We wanted to represent the alignment of mission and goals in our approach to NIL. The Alliance is the umbrella group driving and supporting each of our programs in name, image, and likeness. Supporters get a healthy athletic department, engagement benefits, and options to support through scholarships, direct program gifts, infrastructure, or NIL revenue share. It’s an efficient way to support the department’s success.” More Dominguez: “But what we realized with NIL…was this is a moment where we get to start over. … How do we separate ourselves? How do we ensure that we get the competitive advantage? We get the jump on our peers, and the message in the community was pretty simple: It's uncomfortable, NIL compensation of student-athletes, but it is a direct path to some of the goals we wanted to achieve. And that message really resonated with our community and has really helped us take a big jump on the basketball court and in other sports and has given us the chance to make huge strides in football as well.” Full Q&A. Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down Baylor’s trademark infringement lawsuit against Boston University and explains: “Among Boston University’s possible defenses are that the school is using the interlocking BU in ways that fall outside of Baylor’s trademarks. For instance, an interlocking BU for Terriers club sports concerns a student activity that is very different from DI athletics. … Boston University could also invoke fair use as a defense. The school could insist its usage of an interlocking BU doesn’t mislead or confuse consumers as to which BU the BU refers. There are, of course, other colleges in America that could claim a stake in BU. Bryant University, which is about an hour away by car from Boston University, Bradley University, Brenau University [NAIA] and Bellarmine University are among the nation’s BUs. Boston University could also assert it is protected by contractual authority. … Further, Boston University might contend Baylor’s claims aren’t timely, and that applicable statutes of limitation have expired.” McCann believes there is a “good chance the two universities will eventually resolve their dispute out of court via a settlement. A plausible resolution would be a licensing agreement in which Boston University pays Baylor University some fee. Higher ed is big enough for many BUs, and perhaps it’s big enough for more than one interlocking BU.” (link)

Louisville AD Josh Heird, when questioned on how the Cardinals plan to divide up its $20.5M revenue-sharing budget among 23 varsity sports for 2025-26, highlighted to the Courier Journal’s Payton Titus that U of L’s approach will be to invest in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. When asked, Heird wouldn’t answer how much each sport would receive but “did say he approached each allocation with ‘ranges,’ as opposed to rigid numbers. [...] If there's an opportunity from another coach that says, 'Hey, could we do something here from a rev-share standpoint,' (we're) willing to have that conversation. But for all intents and purposes, it's those five programs.” U of L also faces a unique position from the standpoint of Louisville being perceived as a basketball town, forcing Heird to navigate how to fund successful teams across the department when NCAA Tournament victories carry lofty weight. Heird: “It's a challenge. There's always been some push and pull there relative to investment, but there's more now. But if football and basketball for us aren't successful, then everybody's resources are going to get reduced. I think that's what you're really trying to reconcile. How do we make sure that we can provide the most resources to all of our programs?” (link)

The Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga highlights the unique career path of Maryland AD Jim Smith, observing that with his previous experience as an executive with the MLB, NFL, MLS, Professional Bull Riding circuit and even the WWE, the Terps’ new hire hasn’t taken what would be considered a traditional path to the big chair. Smith: “I realize I’m not coming from a lifetime in college athletics. I think that really helps me. … They tell me a little bit about, ‘This university wants to do something different,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ve heard this before.’ And then they sent me the job description, and it sounded more like the president of a pro sports team than it did a traditional athletic director role.” More from Smith: “In order to be successful in the Big Ten, revenues need to grow pretty dramatically. There’s no silver bullet here, but over time, with a really good plan, you can definitely do that. … Solving that puzzle is what’s the most interesting to me. No one’s solved it yet. If anybody had solved it, we’d all be doing it. So I think that the opportunity exists to kind of chart your own path. That interests me.” (link)

More from Northwestern AD Mark Jackson’s Q&A with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna. On shutting down the TrueNU collective to effectively move NIL in-house: “I can't speak to anybody else's collective, but our collective had been maxed out. There wasn't like this big coffer of money that was just sitting there waiting to be spent. And we were built on a charitable end. We weren't trying to do business with outside entities and connecting it with a non-charitable vertical. … TrueNU wasn't built that way. They were built to go out and raise money and find a way checking it through charity and community relations, things like that, to make it work. We know in this day and age, we're going to have to submit real deals to the clearinghouse that had real teeth. So the emphasis falls back to us as an athletic department to manage that, particularly with our MMR partners. And it's an uphill climb. This isn't a college town. We're in Chicago. It's a pro sports market. So we have our challenges there. That's the tough news. The good news is, again, we have one of the most influential, business-minded global communities probably in the country. We've had a ton of smart people doing really, really special things with businesses and corporations that have an interest in partnering with our student-athletes and partnering with our program. So we're exploring all those options right now to do it in-house. Tremendously grateful for TrueNU. But it's just going down a different path.” (link)

The Mountain West’s mediation talks with Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State regarding the $22M in exit fees the conference is seeking from each school started in the same room, but “we ended up on different planets,” a source tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher. Canzano reports that “one involved person compared the final stages of the recent ‘exit fee’ mediation to a tug-of-war with an elephant. The MW reluctantly moved from an opening offer of $22M per school to $18M during the negotiation. At one point, the attorneys for the departing schools said they’d be willing to pay $9M per school, per a source. The counteroffer came: ‘$18M per school.’ A second offer was eventually presented: ‘$10 million per school.’ The answer again came: ‘$18 million.’” A conference spokesperson asserts to Canzano that the league followed bylaws established under the watch of the departing schools and believes it has acted in good faith, leaning into the league’s conflict-of-interest and resignation policies. Lots more. (link)

Kentucky and JMI Sports have agreed to a multimedia rights agreement valued at more than $465M that extends the parties’ existing contract through 2040. In addition to the $465M in multimedia rights value, key terms of the agreement also include a new revenue sharing model allocating 80% of net revenue from all inventory and advertising opportunities to UK and Champions Blue LLC over the next 15 years as well as an innovative model that “introduces new services and incentivizes revenue growth across existing multimedia rights, athletics facilities investments, expansion of JMI Sports-managed NIL opportunities and the development of new sponsorship categories.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini has the latest on the gambling allegations surrounding Oklahoma Football student-athlete John Mateer, noting that the quarterback called the Venmo descriptions of payments in reference to sports betting “inside jokes” in a Tuesday statement, while denying ever having bet on college football or other sports. Mateer: “The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false. My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo transactions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling.” All of this comes after screenshots and a video of Venmo transactions in Mateer’s name began spreading Monday night on social media. The West Virginia attorney general's office has filed a motion to weigh in on an eligibility lawsuit involving four would-be West Virginia transfers, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes the AG is “supporting the athletes' argument that the challenged eligibility rules violate the Sherman Antitrust Act.” Ehrlich adds: “This is a rather significant turn of events, as the first time a state attorney general has weighed in on one of these cases. Though, of course, this particular office has gone after the NCAA in the recent past as a chief litigant in the Ohio lawsuit over transfer rules.” (link); Full amicus brief. (link)

The San Antonio Express-News’ Patrick Danner digs into why Baylor has filed a federal lawsuit against Boston University asserting trademark infringement and unfair competition claims while also seeking to recover legal costs, plus interest, and any other relief the court deems appropriate. In the litigation filed in Waco against the Boston University trustees, Baylor “alleges Boston University’s use of ‘an interlocking BU design’ is ‘essentially identical and/or confusingly similar’ to the one used by the Texas school,” and that use of the trademark is “likely to cause confusion, to cause mistake, or to deceive consumers.” The suit goes on to proclaim that Boston University should be “permanently enjoined from using an interlocking BU mark and any other mark or design that is confusingly similar to Baylor’s Interlocking BU, and from any attempt to retain any part of the goodwill misappropriated from Baylor,” while also requiring the Terriers to “destroy all goods, packaging, signage, advertisements, internet postings and … any other materials bearing or using an interlocking BU mark.” (link)
