CBS’ Brandon Marcello asks NCAA President Charlie Baker whether he thinks federal legislation is possible by the end of this year, and Baker replies: “The only thing that's more dangerous than predicting what's gonna happen in college sports is predicting what's gonna happen in Washington. I guess what I would say is the SCORE Act is a big statement in part because it’s one of the first times we’ve seen a piece of legislation move this far. But it’s also got Democrat support as well as Republican support. For me, the most important thing is it deals with the employment question, which has been hanging around out there for a really long time. … Talk about Olympic sports, you turn everybody into an employee and it’ll have a profoundly negative impact on Olympic sports.” (link)

More from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s sit down with CBS Mornings’ Nate Burleson. On the effects of revenue sharing/NIL on smaller schools: “If you talk to those schools in particular, and I’ve talked to a lot of them, most of them are looking forward to the opportunity they're gonna have to continue to invest in their other sports. One of the things this injunction does is gets rid of all the scholarship limits. You can basically scholarship as many student-athletes as you want. I promise you there are going to be thousands and thousands of athletes who will be scholarship going forward in women’s sports and in the so-called non-revenue sports, I prefer to think of them as lower revenue sports, that weren’t scholarship previously. Over time, schools are going to make decisions about which sports they want to invest in, which sports they want to be great in, and I think that’s going to be good for everybody. On fixing the issues surrounding gambling in collegiate athletics: “The amount of traffic online that’s directed at student-athletes in big-time sports and high-visibility sports is insane. In our major championships, we hired a company to track all that traffic, and if we see bad stuff being directed at student-athletes, coaches or umpires, we notify the platforms and tell the platforms to shut those people off and block them. … In some cases, we refer this stuff to law enforcement, if it’s ugly enough. We provide a lot of education to young people around sports betting. We’ve probably done more than 100,000 student-athletes on campus. We have a lot of online learning tools. We work very hard to encourage schools to work on what’s going on behind the bench. Go sit behind a bench at a men’s or women’s basketball game and listen to the noise that’s coming at those kids. It’s ridiculous.” (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh qualified for $76K in bonus pay in the first year of a reworked contract that includes incentives related to student-athletes' academic performance and coaching bonuses. Badger Extra’s Todd Milewski notes that, among coaches, only Badgers Women’s Hockey HC Mark Johnson had a higher bonus than McIntosh did in 2024-25. Johnson earned $168,835.35 – 40% of his salary – for winning the NCAA championship and league and national coach of the year awards. Milewski adds: “McIntosh's contract was reworked in July 2024 and now includes two components that contribute toward incentive compensation. One is based on academics: He gets a $30K bonus for an NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 92% and $50K if the GSR is 93% or higher. Wisconsin had a 94% GSR for the 2023-24 season in figures released by the NCAA in November 2024, so McIntosh got the $50K bonus. The second part of the bonus is 7.5% of the total incentive compensation earned by the Badgers' 18 head coaches. Nine of them qualified for bonuses in 2024-25 totaling $351,384.92. … McIntosh's 7.5% share of that total was $26,353.87, bringing his bonus to $76,353.87. He has a yearly cap of $200,000 on his incentive pay in his contract. McIntosh had a salary of $1.45M in 2024-25 when combining his base salary and money from an additional compensation agreement. That automatically bumped up to $1.5 million for 2025-26 according to his five-year contract.” (link)

More on Tennessee’s new partnership with Adidas, as Vols AD Danny White wrote in a letter to fans: "Our primary goal has been to find an apparel partner that recognizes our status as an elite brand in college sports. Our competitive achievements and the support of the best fan base distinguish us in the marketplace. … This partnership will give us a significant advantage in the ever-evolving world of college sports and is one of the best apparel deals in college sports history. We take pride in our fan base, which is the strongest in all of sports, and we refuse to settle for any deal that doesn't reflect that strength ... In today's college athletics environment, it is essential for us to align with a brand that can elevate our student-athletes' marketing and personal brand on a national stage." (link); ESPN’s Chris Low adds: “The added money for Tennessee in its new 10-year deal with Adidas is substantial and will be shared with athletes. Old deal with Nike was $5.5M annually. Nike had no interest in going near the yearly value of the deal, approaching $20M, that Adidas was offering.” (link)

“We want all of Cougar Nation to have total access to BYU sports.” That’s AD Brian Santiago’s recent comment in relation to the "unprecedented" demand for BYU tickets, according to The Deseret News’ Jackson Payne. With the move to the Big 12 and growing success in football and basketball, single-game and season ticket costs are on the rise with fans paying more for football tickets in 2024 than at any time in program history. Santiago: “The demand right now to be part of BYU and the demand in Cougar Nation for tickets is unprecedented. There’s never been a time quite like this. We’ve talked about the momentum that’s been created by Kalani (Sitake), by Kevin (Young) and the success of the programs. It’s really phenomenal to know that we have a fan base that is so passionate about our teams and about this university.” As for his message to those priced out or unable to attend BYU games this season: “We hear you, and we’re sitting in rooms and looking at all of it. We want all of Cougar Nation to have total access to BYU sports. And so we’re sitting back looking at all of our processes, making sure they’re consistent, making sure that we’re doing it the right way, making sure that we are giving everyone an opportunity. … We hear you, we’ve met with many of you, we’ve talked to many of you that have called and have been frustrated with some of the processes, and we just want you to know that we’re in, and we want to do things the right way. … We’re going to make adjustments. We’re going to do everything we can to make BYU sports accessible to everyone in Cougar Nation, because we need everyone.” (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe talks about upgrades to Mackay Stadium, explaining that the venue is “something that we are all constantly focused on, whether it's concessions, whether it is in and out, the game-day experience, the sound, the videoboards, the entrance of the team, all of that. [...] One of the things that we're focused on is the north end zone and trying to create a better experience down there. What we're hoping to be able to do is create some field-level suites, some loge boxes and some higher-end seats that have access to a club. So, we've been working on that for a couple months, and that's something that we are hoping to share during this season so people can get excited for next year and be able to get their seats.” Rempe confirms that the goal is to have the physical upgrades completed in time for the 2026 season, “but the gameday experience we want to feel immediately. And we're doing some stuff with concessions and more point of sales. The number of points of sale from two years ago to last year to this year is going up so people have access to better and more variety, whether it's drinks or food or things like that and then the lines aren't as long because we're well aware of those challenges.” (link, link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown digs into Learfield’s strategy to help student-athletes make athlete-driven NIL content that actually provides benefits. For Learfield Head of Content Grant Jones, building anything that would make a brand want to return and run additional campaigns is about working to really understand what it hopes to accomplish and then working backwards. Jones: “If you’re just going to film content with the athlete and do whatever, maybe the brand partner does it once, but they’re not going to invest long-term in college athlete marketing, in my opinion.” According to Brown, “ad campaigns that are built around driving awareness should be built differently than those looking to, say, more directly drive consumer sales, or to change how a particular brand is perceived. Spending time to really work with a brand to help it understand what it wants and needs goes a long way towards picking the right athletes, the right content and the right type of campaign.” To that end, the big question is who are the “right athletes?” Do brands need to go after “big names” or need to focus their efforts on whatever secures the largest audience? For Learfield, it’s about “making a significant investment to have full-time content specialists sit on campus at partner institutions,” people there to get to know student-athletes, build relationships and understand what opportunities interest them most, while also helping with the actual content creation. Jones: “We have full-time content people that are thinking, every day, about projects specific to Alabama or Texas or wherever they’re based. We believe that will give our brand clients the best chance to get an ROI on their investment in college sports, NIL and content. … We have to make sure we’re putting athletes in the best position to be successful. Chances are, when an athlete shows up to do an interview with somebody on our NIL team, that won’t be the first time they’ve met. We’re consistently interfacing with athletes, which makes them more comfortable to work with us on campaigns.” More from Brown. (link)

SBJ’s Ethan Joyce provides more insight into Florida’s Express Entry system powered by Wicket, whose COO, Jeff Boehm, explains the possibilities on college campuses exist behind sporting venues. Joyce notes: “It’s an ecosystem that could lean on an Express Entry-like function to get into cafeterias, on-campus activities or even residence halls (I use residence halls instead of dorms because I’m a former residence assistant and must stay on-brand).” Boehm adds: “It’s not something that we’ve honestly done with any of the schools. But I think that sports venues, football and sports in general are sort of the tip of the iceberg for us there.” Joyce goes on to point out that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers “rolled out Express Entry for their training camp and preseason games, the first of which produced a Wicket record of tickets scanned by one person. A woman had 40 tickets associated with her account, Boehm shared, and a quick registration at the gate helped her and her party walk through in under 10 seconds.” (link)

Connecticut is offering fantasy football players a unique luxury opportunity by granting local leagues the opportunity to host their own private fantasy football drafts from the Rentschler Field luxury suites the afternoon following the Huskies’ season opener against Central Connecticut State. For $75 per person, the five-hour, inaugural experience will allot an hour for tailgating while featuring a premium guided tour and food options with the name of each participating fantasy league being highlighted on the stadium scoreboard. Senior Assoc. AD for External Strategy Chris Grosse believes this event will “just scratch the surface” of similar promotions the department hopes to put on during the upcoming athletic year. Grosse: “We know how passionate fans are about their fantasy leagues, and how, you know, important fantasy leagues are to everybody's fall … I think this is a great example of our athletic leadership team wanting to try to think outside the box and do some new experiences for our fans. Whether it be at basketball games, football games, soccer field, hockey, volleyball, we are definitely looking at different ways to utilize facilities that we have, and the events that we can throw, to try to create some new memorable experiences for our fans.” (link)

Kansas has received a $300M donation from donor David Booth, marking the largest single gift in school history and believed to be among the largest in collegiate athletics history, according to ESPN’s Max Olson. The Jayhawks reportedly plan to allocate $75M of the gift toward launching the second phase of the ongoing David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium transformation as well as to construction of the surrounding Gateway District, while the remainder of the commitment will go to establishing an annual revenue stream for the athletics department. AD Travis Goff: “I'd say it's transformative and a game changer. This gift makes an immediate impact on our top priority in a profound way, and it also provides us with an incredible revenue stream that gives us a chance to really invest in unique ways in the future of Kansas athletics.” No timetable for construction and completion of phase two has been revealed, but the funding is expected to allow KU to move ahead with renovating the east side of the stadium following the 2025 campaign. The NCAA and national nonprofit Team IMPACT announce a collaboration to foster long-term relationships between collegiate student-athletes and youths to inspire and promote belonging, empowerment and resilience by matching children facing serious illnesses or disabilities with college sports teams at various NCAA championships. NCAA President Charlie Baker shares more with CBS Mornings’ Nate Burleson: “The work that they do for young people who are dealing with debilitating and, in some cases, fatal diseases, to give those kids and their families a team that they can be part of and a set of relationships that, in many cases, long outlast the time somebody spends for their four years in college is really powerful. … The other thing it does, and I’ve talked to a lot of college athletes who've been part of Team IMPACT, is it reminds those kids over and over again of the gifts they’ve been given and how they should appreciate the opportunities that they possess as a result. … When you have a teammate who can’t play and will never play and is dealing with much bigger things than you, it has a pretty powerful impact on the way you think about the skills and opportunities you’ve been given.” (link, link)
|
More from Baker’s sit down with Burleson: “I think some of the stuff we’re doing with the injunction should take some of the ‘Wild West’ out of it. We have not had historically, in this NIL era, any process to collect data and provide people with the kind of information that would help them and their family make decisions. … There’s an account management system being put in place. Third party NIL, that’s been a ‘Wild West.’ We now have a process people have to go through to get their deals approved, and one of the things that happens when you have those processes in place is people can start to produce information that will say, ‘this is what it looks like for a big-time school in the sport of pick [whatever] … This is what it looks like for student-athletes who play volleyball.’ … That will change the game, in some respects. Part of the ‘Wild West’ is because people don’t know much of anything about anything and can’t believe anything. Now, we’ll have real data that people can rely on.” (link)

On3’s Nick Schultz reports that with its agreement with Nike ready to expire in 2026, Tennessee has agreed to a deal to have Adidas again serve as UT’s apparel provider. The Vols, who left Adidas back in 2014, are scheduled to reap $1.2M in base compensation in 2025-26 and $4.5M in annual product allotment as part of their current Nike deal. (link)

Adidas VP of North America Sports Marketing Chris McGuire says, within the context of the company’s new partnership with Tennessee: “The arms race was originally about facilities. Now it’s gone to rev-share and NIL. We want to make sure we provide opportunities to our partners that are competitive in the marketplace so they'll have competitive teams on the field.” Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes that Adidas is already working to strike individual deals with Vols student-athletes during this school year — months before the new apparel contract starts next July. From UT: “Once the partnership begins, every Tennessee student-athlete will be eligible to participate in Adidas' wide-sweeping NIL Ambassador Network, which gives all student-athletes at Adidas-partnered Division I schools the chance to benefit from their Name, Image and Likeness.” Dellenger also points out there is a “brewing bidding war unfolding among multimedia rights and apparel companies jockeying to offer the best NIL-centric contracts to gain university partnerships. Many schools are employing multimedia rights (MMR) partners and marketing agencies – perhaps those that once operated as collectives – to use corporate sponsors to direct their distribution to athletes instead of to the school.” (link, link)

Big 12 ADs reportedly voted Wednesday to begin utilizing public availability reports in football, men's and women’s basketball league games. Per On3’s Brett McMurphy, the league joins the ACC, Big Ten and SEC in requiring its football teams to provide availability reports, with teams expected to provide daily reports three days before game day and a final one 90 minutes prior to kickoff designating players as “available, probable, questionable, doubtful or out.” For basketball, programs will note if players are “available, game-time decision or out.” (link)

South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley tells former First Lady Michelle Obama that her players must sign NDAs regarding the money they receive, adding: “Now whether they can stick with that or not, some of them get disgruntled and maybe transfer and just say 'I was making [amount]' and it can stir up the pot, but I'm very honest. I'll tell them, there's a reason why you get paid this and you get paid that. I'll explain that to them." Staley also talks about how NIL and revenue sharing has changed recruiting: "That's the difficult part. The market says that if you're a non-contributor and you go into the portal, they can go ask a school like us for $100K. If I entertain that, they're going to take it to another school [and say], ‘Hey, South Carolina offered me a hundred grand, you got $150K?" Overall, Staley is in favor of players being able to earn money. “I think it’s long overdue. … We’ve got to find a way to balance. To keep it an amateur sport while allowing young people to go out there and benefit from their name, image and likeness." (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved a proposal from the Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee to extend a review option to game misconduct penalties, effective with the 2025-26 season. Last season, conferences were able to request a review by the NCAA secretary-rules editor and national coordinator of officials for possible adjustment. This process was used rarely, but in those instances, it was successful and corrected a handful of decisions. PROP also approved adjustments to the face mask penalty structure, new major penalty review options, and a clarification on high-sticking the puck by separating the scoring of a goal (puck may not be played higher than 4 feet, which is the height of the crossbar) and all other plays (puck may not be played higher than above a player's shoulder, which is defined as that player's normal standing height). The previous rule did not include the "player's normal standing height." (link)

The word ‘Psycho’ will be included on the helmet in honor of the call sign of Col. William Andrews, an Air Force graduate who was shot down in Operation Desert Storm.” According to The Gazette’s Brent Briggeman, other features will include the word “Viper” down one leg and “Fighting Falcon” down the other.
