SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey covers several topics on The Paul Finebaum Show and notes that as far as federal legislation is concerned: “We need people to engage with their elected representatives. We really can't go on as we are. We need the ability to have national standards. … I can go into more communicating a vision of what college athletics should be again. Work to do on the Senate. I've had the opportunity to be on video conferences and phone calls with members of the Senate as they are on recess and talking to their constituents. And there's people watching this show engage with their senators and House members, as I said a moment ago, I think helping them understand the importance of college football and all of college sports. We saw an executive order the week after we were in Atlanta together for media days. There are some time constraints that the president set in that executive order assigning responsibility for policy development to different federal agencies. We'll do our best to continue to communicate on those issues.” Sankey goes on to note that “I had some meetings today about how people outside of the Southeastern Conference can engage. I spent a couple hours Saturday on a video conference with a basketball coach from another conference and a senator from the Democrat side of the aisle because this is a nonpartisan issue and a bipartisan solution. And I'll take a couple hours every weekend if I can have those types of conversations, whether they're from representatives in the House or members of the Senate within or outside our footprint, Democrat or Republican.” More from Sankey. North Carolina Chancellor Lee Roberts discusses his strategy for moving the Tar Heels forward in the rev-share era and notes: “I think it’s fair to say that we haven’t needed to drive revenue as aggressively in the past as we clearly do now. And again, that’s true for not just Carolina, but for everybody we compare ourselves to. When you watch a college football or basketball game, you’ll see more of it this year. There’s clearly been more aggressive use of sponsorship and marketing opportunities, and I think you’re going to see that continue. Everybody’s trying to figure out how to drive revenue. … I think it’s clear to say that the House settlement is not the end of the changes in college athletics. The premise of the House settlement was that it would dry up the third-party collectives and that it would forestall future litigation. The House settlement has been in effect [since July 1], and that’s already proven not to be true. It does have the benefit of preventing an adverse judgment against the conferences and the NCAA, which would have bankrupted them. And it makes sense for that reason, but I don’t know of anybody who is satisfied with the status quo in college athletics as enshrined in the House settlement. You’ve seen a lot of discussion about a legislative solution. The President put out an executive order that was constructive, but I think the conferences and the NCAA and individual schools are going to continue to press for more rationalization of the college athletics landscape from Congress.” (link)

City commissioners in Lawrence on Tuesday approved a package of financial incentives worth $94.6M, including Tax Increment Financing and STAR bond districts, that will help Kansas’ Gateway project move forward. Combined with Wednesday’s announcement that longtime donor David Booth gave the university $75M for the project as part of an overall $300M donation, Jayhawks AD Travis Goff says: “We roll with incredible confidence” into the project’s second phase. Now, there’s still work. So I couldn’t sit here and tell you definitively what it’s going to be in the precise definition, but I can tell you with confidence we are into conceptual design, that architect team and the entirety of the development team is working, gosh, full days to say the least, and the objective, of course – this has been stated, so I’ll just reinforce it – is to demo after the season.” How construction will impact the 2026 football season remains to be seen, but Goff emphasizes KU will prioritize getting it right over getting it done quickly. “I don’t know how you can do it right, rush it in seven, eight months, have nailed it to do that once-in-a-lifetime chance, and have it all completed. So I think we’ll be playing through a little construction, I think we’ll have a little bit of reduced capacity over there, and I’m fired up about that. Nothing apologetic about it. I’m like, let’s do it right, we’ll play through it, and it’ll be worth every bit of quasi-inconvenience that provides.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts Q&As with TexAgs Live host David Nuno to share his perspective on the post-House world and how he has continued to lead the Aggies through the new NIL changes. On that front, Alberts notes: "I never have been afraid of change. I kind of enjoy it. I view this opportunity as a chance to make a difference. … We have a duty and responsibility to fight for college football and college athletics to continue to make a difference and impact the lives of young people. We need to take that seriously." Alberts also explains that "part of the challenge sitting in my seat is to protect the integrity of this brand. At the same time, we can't create barriers for our coaches. … There is a balance. We try to be as aggressive as we can but fight hard to make sure we are doing things within the rules." (link)

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt says the Red Raiders’ tradition of throwing tortillas onto the football field following the opening kickoff and scoring drives was a direct point of conversation in the conference meeting in Dallas regarding regulation on throwing items. “Unfortunately not,” he added about the possibility of a revision to allow Tech’s tradition to remain; however, Hocutt intends to keep the Red Raiders’ tradition alive in some form. He plans to meet with Raider Riot, the official student section of, and coordinate the possibility of taking the repercussions for a second offense or introducing a new tradition in its place. “Our student body will have some ideas.” (link)

The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna reports from a source: “Expect a potential record-setting fine to be among the penalties the NCAA levies against Michigan on Friday for its alleged sign-stealing scheme. For context: In 2023, Tennessee was fined $8M, which is believed to be the largest ever in an NCAA infractions case.” (link)

Stephen F. Austin is appealing a U.S. District Court injunction stopping the university from eliminating its women’s beach volleyball, women’s bowling and men’s and women’s golf teams. In a filing submitted this week, SFA argues that reinstating the programs would be "financially significant and logistically improbable" under such a quick deadline as the start of the fall semester. As such, the Office of the Texas Attorney General is requesting a postponement of the preliminary injunction pending a decision from the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. SFA argues there are not enough student-athletes to support the minimum roster numbers needed for these teams, meaning the university would have to recruit athletes from other schools. SFA would also need to staff the teams with the coaches, find competitions and arrange for travel within a very short time period. At least two of the teams do not have coaches, and after the most recent order, only the women’s golf coach agreed to return. (link)

Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray contends that the first claim in Boise State, Utah State and Colorado State’s lawsuit against the Mountain West — of the MW wrongfully withholding money — is “laughable. The MW bylaws state conference distribution would be withheld from schools once they issue exit notice to the league, which the Pac-5 did in May to avoid seeing its exit fee double. Those bylaws read, ‘After receiving Notice of Resignation from a Member, all payments due that Member from the Conference shall be withheld and applied to that Member’s Exit Fee. The balance of the Member’s Exit Fee as provided above, shall be paid by the Member to the Conference on or before the Effective Date.’ According to those bylaws, the MW can withhold the departing school's 2024-25 and 2025-26 conference distribution as a down payment on the exit fee owed by those schools.” Murray also addresses the schools’ claims that the MW’s addition of Grand Canyon was done in a “devious” fashion: “I fail to see how adding Grand Canyon to the MW is retaliation or greatly harms those schools. Firstly, there's precedent. When Oklahoma and Texas agreed to leave the Big 12 for the SEC, they lost seats on the Big 12's Board of Directors and the conference then added BYU, Houston, Cincinnati and UCF a season early before the Longhorns and Sooners left for the SEC.” (link)

Ball State this fall will host its inaugural EA Sports College Football 26 Tournament, a collaborative effort between Ball State Athletics, the Division of Marketing and Communications, and the university’s Esports program. Cardinals AD Jeff Mitchell: "Hosting an EA Sports College Football video game tournament is a dynamic way to engage the Ball State community. This event taps into the widespread appeal of college football and gaming, creating a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to connect with alumni, friends, and fans in a fun, competitive, and Ball State-spirited environment.” To help kick off the event, Mitchell took on Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns in the first-ever “Geoff vs. Jeff Bowl” on August 14. The Cardinals came out victorious over the Cardinals in a closely contested matchup. (link)

Count Kentucky Men’s Basketball HC Mark Pope among those who believe that the recent NCAA Division I Council increase from 31 to 32 regular-season games for 2026-27 isn’t enough, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander. Pope points to the high roster replacement rate due to the transfer portal as a reason to increase game inventory with more games meaning more cash to offer players through revenue sharing: “Our teams turn over so much -- because of the current environment, which I'm all in for it, it's all great -- but to give our teams a chance to go through a couple evolutions in one season that they used to go through, they used to have one or two or three seasons to get through those evolutions of growth. Now we're trying to squeeze in one season, we could use some more games. And our fans get to know these kids more. Every single game last year, our fans, BBN, got to know our guys so much better. Our fans deserve it. And when you're tying all this to revenue share, there's nobody that's going to complain -- players, coaches, fans -- about getting to 40 games where everyone capitalizes off the revenue-share model.” (link)

Binghamton has received an anonymous $22M gift that will be matched by $11M from the State of New York to create a $33M endowment to expand scholarships for student-athletes across multiple sports. Overall, the gift will create the equivalent of 40 new full athletic scholarships, divided evenly between men's and women's sports, raising most programs to the NCAA maximum or near-maximum scholarship levels. AD Gene Marshall: “This gift will ensure our coaches can recruit and retain top talent while providing our student-athletes with the resources to excel on the field and in the classroom. It is a game-changer for Bearcat Athletics.” (link)

Federal investigators from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania have advanced their probe of point shaving and game fixing in college basketball, according to Sports Illustrated’s Michael Rosenberg and Pat Forde, who report the “investigation covers multiple regions and teams, sources say, with a current focus on ‘Southern schools.’ The probe is believed to be heading toward the indictment stage.” One source says there are “going to be charges. It’s going to be national in scope. It’s going to involve multiple players and programs.” Rosenberg and Forde also note the NCAA is performing its own investigations of a number of programs, with infractions cases or eligibility inquiries involving players at New Orleans, Eastern Michigan, Mississippi Valley State and Temple. It’s not clear whether the players from those institutions are under criminal investigation, or whether the NCAA will charge them or their schools with violations. Inquiries initiated by alerts from gambling compliance agencies may not all lead to findings of wrongdoing, sources say.” (link)

South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati says there are no plans to rename Williams-Brice Stadium in light of the Gamecocks’ new partnership with Blanchard Machinery: “It’s always going to be Williams-Brice Stadium. We’ve had no conversations about where else it makes sense potentially to add field sponsorships, whether that’s (Colonial Life Arena) or another venue. But, no, it’s going to be Williams-Brice Stadium. We’re not looking to rename that.” (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith on the Terps’ NIL situation: “We've had work to do. And honestly, every program does. The rules keep changing, and we have to adapt. Our obligation is to provide the resources for coaches to compete at the highest level. That's my responsibility: find resources and create a successful NIL program. I started in mid-July, so I've had fewer weeks to work with, but we're off and running. That's the biggest part of the job, figuring out how to do 'and' instead of 'or.' We have to have great football, basketball, soccer, field hockey, and more. We're fortunate here to have great coaches committed to success even if we don't have the resources others have. My job is to figure out how to provide what they need to keep winning." (link)

Ross Dellenger pens a column for On3 in which he notes that with the college football season just weeks away, the future of the transfer portal as to its timing (January vs. April) and occurrence (one vs. two portal windows) remains very uncertain with disagreements ongoing, not just on timing, but on the legislative process of reaching a decision itself. With portal timing impacting how the framework of revenue-sharing contracts are set up and schools working to design their deals in an attempt to limit student-athlete movement, “the uncertainty over such a decision lingers over the industry like a fog,” with one power conference AD remarking: “we need to just make a damn decision.” Per Dellenger, the delay is being caused by two factors: the Big Ten and SEC are at odds over when the portal should be open, with the SEC preferring January and the Big Ten wanting April, while no one seems to be completely sure about the legislative process to even reach a decision on the portal or other football calendar changes such as a summer signing period and OTA-type workouts. The author notes that most expect any eventual NCAA Implementation Committee recommendation to end with the portal in January, but “the move to shift the portal decision back under the NCAA umbrella could delay and complicate matters and involve other conferences outside of the power leagues. The result may still be the same” as nine leagues supported the January portal back at FBS conference commissioner meetings in June. (link)

Ball State AD Jeff Mitchell writes in a letter to fans that “as I start my third year in Muncie, the accomplishment about which I am most proud is that nearly every one of our sports venues has undergone significant change over the past two years. We have either completed or approved plans for approximately $25M in facility improvements or new construction. These facilities are our foundation – for student athletes, for fans, for recruits, and for overall success. Ongoing construction of the Eric Foss Championship Performance Center, along the western edge of Worthen Arena, is the crown jewel of these facility projects. This state-of-the-art ‘power and speed lab,’ as I like to call it, reflects the 11th different venue in which we have either installed a new playing surface or conducted renovation and new construction since Spring 2023. And we're not slowing down. New soccer turf will be installed in 2026, and baseball and softball stadium enhancements were announced in May to feature the addition of clubhouse facilities for both teams in addition to new playing surfaces. Our venues are becoming modernized and our consistent branding promotes a confident, bold appeal. Our goal is to welcome fans from Muncie and surrounding communities as we continue to establish Ball State as an attractive destination for arts and entertainment in East Central Indiana.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel report that the NCAA Committee on Infractions is set to issue its long-awaited ruling on the Michigan advance-scouting/Connor Stalions case during an early Friday afternoon press conference. The pair adds that “according to a draft of the NCAA notice of allegations obtained by ESPN, Stalions arranged the impermissible scouting of at least 13 future opponents on at least 58 occasions from 2021 to 2023. That included scouting opponents multiple times, including one team that was watched seven times in 2022, according to the draft.” While stealing signs in games isn’t against NCAA rules, Thamel and Wetzel note that schools aren’t permitted to scout opponents in advance in person with evidence emerging of Stalions having purchased tickets at almost every Big Ten school. Ross Dellenger, this time for Yahoo Sports, reports that “Big 12 ADs this week voted, 15-1, to solidify an existing game management policy related to the throwing of items onto the playing surface. A team will receive warnings for the first two violations in a game before 15-yard penalties could begin. The move most impacts Texas Tech, whose fans hold a tradition of tossing tortillas onto the field, most notably during opening kickoff. The policy will allow for tortillas to be thrown at opening kickoff but will result in a warning. A third incident may result in a penalty.“ (link)

The HoriZone Roundtable’s Alex Perez delivers an update on the future of Northern Kentucky athletics, reporting that the department’s budget for the upcoming year reflects a change close to 3%. Chief Communications Officer Corey Best told Perez that the budgeting change would have no impact on NKU's Division I status and reported changes to scholarships would also have no impact on current student-athletes. She offered insight into how the Norse might handle future scholarships, remarking: “like many mid-major universities, we are considering ways to consider future scholarship offerings given the NCAA House settlement regarding the ending of amateur sports.” Best also noted that Northern Kentucky has no plans to cut sports programs or add any sports in the near future, outside of the six agreed upon back in 2023. Northern Arizona announces the return of its Astrojacks alternate identity for a second season with new creative elements in the works. Created to honor Flagstaff’s lunar legacy, space science roots, and its distinction as the world's first International Dark Sky City, the Astrojacks initiative will be utilized six times during the 2025-26 campaign, debuting at soccer on Oct. 17, before landing at volleyball on Oct. 30, men's basketball on Jan. 19 & 24 and women's basketball on Feb. 5 and 7. Deputy AD for External Operations Alex Lais: “The continuation of Astrojacks into year two is exciting for the department, for our student-athletes, and for the community to keep celebrating everything we set out to accomplish in year one. We saw success in so many ways, from fan engagement to revenue generation. We were able to generate buzz not just regionally, but nationally as well. From ESPN to NACMA, the narrative became that we're doing something innovative by leaning into our area's identity and telling a story not just about NAU, but about our incredible Flagstaff community. That's a win for everybody.” (link)
