Outgoing Hawai’i AD Matlin on his last day leading the Rainbow Warriors: “I knew the job wasn’t to make everyone happy. It can be a very complicated job, but I tried to keep things simple, without agenda or politics. I had a passion for this and it was a very special experience. I’ve got to meet so many special people, and it’s all about relationships. But it’s time.” Matlin says he doesn’t have his next opportunity lined up, though he will “read a fiction book, and do some things my wife’s been wanting me to do. She’s been running everything.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger says more momentum is building in football leadership circles to make changes to the letter of intent process, the early signing period & the IAWP rule (an individual associated with a prospect). On the first two topics, there’s debate around allowing a prospect to sign whenever he wants after his senior season of high school has begun or move signing day up to earlier in the Fall. LSU HC Kelly: “The proliferation of the players in the portal has pulled from the [high school] group. When you’re ready to go, secure your spot and sign in August so you don’t get knocked off from the portal in December or the spring.” As for the IAWP rule, AFCA Executive Director Berry chimes in: “It’s ridiculous the mechanisms you have to go through to hire somebody right now. I think IAWP is very burdensome and semihard to control. There’s an awful lot of, ‘What is a relationship with a student-athlete?’” Dellenger indicates recommendations may hit the DI Council or commissioners plates in the coming months. (link)

The latest from Texas A&M AD Bjork on NIL developments: “There’s too much at stake, I think, for the athlete and for the institution where we can’t take a hands-off approach. So the state laws that are now being enacted allow us to be more involved. Until there’s, again, national uniformity? That’s the place it has to be. It lives state by state. I know our commissioner doesn’t like that, I think athletic directors don’t necessarily like that. But it’s the only path way for now until we can get some national uniformity.” (link)

The New York Times has walked back its reporting that Alabama men’s basketball student-athlete Kai Spears, son of Marshall AD Chistian Spears, was at the scene of the January shooting in Tuscaloosa. New York Times spokeswoman Rhodes Ha: “We have a longstanding policy of correcting errors. Based on information in the affidavit and new reporting by our newsroom, we believe our original story was not accurate and plan to append an editor’s note to the story.” More verbiage from the NYT’s actual correction: “On Wednesday, Spears filed a defamation suit against The Times that included new details about the incident. Based on that information, editors assigned further reporting, which determined that the other person at the scene was not Spears but Cooper Lee, a student manager for the team. The Times regrets the error in the initial report.” (link, link)

NCAA VP of Academic and Membership Affairs (AMA) Schnase joins the Inside the NCAA podcast to discuss AMA’s role within the organization. Schnase explains AMA’s primary function is student-athlete support, which it sets out to accomplish in several specific ways. “We support and staff all three National Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, we have a Division I academic performance program that makes sure student-athletes progress academically. … Our focus has always been providing good service to the membership, and that’s about understanding the membership’s expectations, so we try and establish relationships, talk to people all the time as we establish good relationships. So, it’s not just about processing widgets.” When looking for new AMA staffers, Schnase says the ideal candidates, in addition to being passionate about college sports, can think and write well and solve problems. “We do so much in AMA that runs across a number of different areas that you just have to be good at really everything, so we just try to have a diverse staff. We have 190 years of campus experience on our team right now.” More. (link)

+ Want to work at UTSA? Roadrunners AD Campos joins Connect’s Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Deputy AD for External Affairs post, which will be a “true Number 2,” responsible for running the department’s day-to-day operations. Campos breaks down her top priorities for UTSA as it transitions to the AAC in July, highlights the role this hire will play in her near-term and long-term vision and explains the non-negotiable qualities she's looking for in her next Deputy AD. “I need to put a lot of responsibility on this individual to help run the department. We all know the athletic directors, we need to be out in the community, we need to be out fundraising, and that’s where my attention needs to be…and I need someone who is going to be back home helping lead and guide the department. And someone who has a wealth of experience on the external side. We have a community that is ready to engage, they have been engaged, how do we continue with that momentum?” Lots more from Campos in the full video, now live on Connect. (link)

+ Alabama AD Byrne says updating Coleman Coliseum is “still a priority” and if anyone has a $100M gift they’d like to contribute, he would “love to talk with them.” (link)
+ In April, Indiana state lawmakers approved an $89.5M budget to design and build a 5K-seat downtown arena that will serve as the future home of IUPUI (soon to be IU Indianapolis) teams. Key notes: “Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration, a Pacers Sports & Entertainment executive, the Indiana Sports Corp. and other high-profile organizations pushed for the arena—with the goal of bringing more NCAA championships, esports competitions and other activities to the city. … But its planned uses go well beyond that. In fact, the funding includes a stipulation that at least one other long-term tenant sign a lease on the building before construction gets underway.” The earliest the project could start is the middle of 2024. (link)
+ Yesterday, Nevada broke ground on the new men’s and women’s basketball locker room building, which will be called the Lannes Basketball Building. Eric and Linda Lannes made a $4M gift a year ago toward the project, the largest in Wolf Pack athletics history. AD Rempe indicates fundraising efforts are still ongoing, with $4M left to go and the building should open in early 2024. (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner submits that the Pac-12 should “seriously consider playing 10 conference games each season. That would be a radical move, to be sure. … But the Pac-12 must think radically and act strategically as the sport undergoes unprecedented change on myriad levels, from the consumption habits of fans to the technology behind product delivery, from economic pressures facing athletic departments to the structure of the Power Five and CFP.” Wilner goes on to posit that “if the schedule strength carries the weight it should in the selection process, then a 10-game conference slate makes sense for the Pac-12 on numerous levels,” although it would obviously require expansion. If the expansion piece is figured out, Wilner notes 10 conference games alleviates, if not solves, a couple of problems, specifically the rising cost of guarantee games and the difficulty of getting teams to travel across the country. UCLA Gambling Studies Program Co-Director Fong during the UNLV Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking discussed the impact gambling is having on student-athletes: “The thing that I think is really brand new this year that we didn’t really see last year was the traumatic experiences that are brought upon by the harassment of the online and in the real world to athletes who play.” When Fong would ask about the cause of some anxiety that players were feeling that they hadn’t felt previously, responses often resembled something like this: “Well, this is the first time where I’m actually worried about my performance because I’m worried about the harassment online that’s affecting sports performance.” At that point, Fong continues, the problem rises to the same level of importance as nutrition or rest. “Suddenly, sports betting becomes a training issue. Just like cardio, strength training, sleep, nutrition, it becomes embedded as part of the athlete’s experience.” (link)

NIL Today…
+ Penn State announces plans for the Brand Academy, a “new venture designed to help athletes and other students develop personal brands, build businesses and pursue opportunities” created by NIL legislation. The academy will be developed through the Wally Triplett Brand Academy Endowment, a $5M fund that includes an anonymous $2.5M donation in the late Nittany Lions standout Triplett’s name. The Brand Academy is a joint venture of Penn State Athletics and Invent Penn State, a $30M university-wide venture dedicated to entrepreneurship and innovation. (link)
+ The NIL deal between Michigan State student-athletes and alum Mat Ishbia’s United Wholesale Mortgage company is coming to an end. In a letter sent to affected Spartan athletes, Ishbia’s purchase of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in February was cited as the reason the partnership would be terminated at the end of the month. All Spartans who have NIL agreements with UWM will receive compensation for social media posts through the end of June. (link)
+ Some collectives are getting involved with The Basketball Tournament to promote NIL activities for current players or support former players who weren’t allowed to profit from NIL, On3’s Wittry reports. The Massachusetts Collective Founder MacWilliams, who is sponsoring a team made up of Minutemen alumni, tells Wittry: “I think it’s important to kind of have the NIL club support people in the future as well, so everybody that’s on the team now knows that our goal with the TBT thing is to have that be for a number of years going forward, too.” Mass St. Collective President/COO Beckler says of the Kansas-focused organization’s TBT sponsorship: “We kind of looked at TBT as an opportunity for us to help those former student-athletes that didn’t have NIL but have gone on to have great professional careers overseas or other places. This was kind of our way of thanking them, honestly, for paving the road to get to where we currently are with NIL.” (link)

LEAD1 CEO McMillen tells The Athletic’s Auerbach that the NCAA’s ideal federal NIL solution is most likely the legislation proposed by U.S. Congressman Bilirakis (R-FL); however, McMillen notes time is of the essence as the general election approaches. “The clock is ticking, and they know they’ve got to get a bill over to the Senate so they can start to negotiate. … The volume (of interest) has increased — I just don’t know that it’s a must-do.” (link)

The NCAA, Pac-12 and USC have issued separate responses to the NLRB’s assertion that they have misclassified college athletes as student-athletes rather than employees. USC argues that “enforcement of any Order from the Board to prohibit USC from using the phrase ‘student-athletes’ and/or to compel USC to use some other words to describe its students who are members of its intercollegiate sports teams, including football or women’s or men’s basketball, would amount to compelled governmental speech in violation of the First Amendment.” The NCAA contends the 2015 Northwestern decision prevents the NLRB from “relitigating the issue of jurisdiction … because there have been no changed circumstances in the law sufficient to warrant the Board's departure from” that decision. USA Today’s Berkowitz subsequently notes: “However, the complaint in this case aims to resolve that issue by alleging that the NCAA, the Pac-12 and USC are joint employers of the athletes. If the NCAA and the Pac-12 are determined to be joint employers with USC, because the NCAA and the Pac-12 include public schools, the case could apply to athletes at both public and private schools.” (link)

Big 12 Briefs…
+ Commissioner Yormark says during the league’s spring meeting that the conference will distribute an estimated $440M to its members for 2022-23. (link)
+ On the topic of expansion, Yormark remarks: “We had a great discussion about expansion and we have a plan. We have an appetite to be a national conference and we believe in the upside of basketball. We love our current composition. Love the four new schools coming in. However, if the opportunity presents itself to create value, we will pursue it. I'm not going to address expansion beyond that today, but it is a focus of ours." Speaking of basketball-only additions, Yormark says: “We do see upside in basketball moving forward for the right reasons. We think it's undervalued and there's a chance to double down as the No. 1 basketball conference. But football is the driver and we all know that." (link)
+ The Big 12 will also undergo a “brand refresh” next year, per Yormark, who points out it’s “not a logo change and certainly not a name change.” (link)

Washington State AD Chun and EVP for Finance and Administration Brunelli will brief the WSU Board of Regents on the department’s $11.5M budget deficit next week. The deficit is attributable to several factors, including a forecasted $1.4M shortfall in the Pac-12 in addition to the $3.5M reduction revenue related to overpayments from Comcast and increased moving expenses. Additionally, the Cougars received roughly $1.2M less in revenue due to lower-than-projected revenue from the sale of student sport passes and other student-paid fees as a result of lower enrollment. Also: “Inflation contributed to higher team-related expenses such as travel, recruiting, student-athlete meals, medical and other expenses, which account for about $4.7M of the over-spending.” (link)

A marketing blitz timed to coincide with the completion of Snapdragon Stadium, coupled with the San Diego State’s recent MBB Final Four run, has paid major dividends for the university, according to Aztecs AD Wicker. “We saw a 68% increase to our admissions page for the institution. Hundreds of percent increase to just the general SDSU page, the general SDSU athletics page. So that’s one of the great things about technology today, you’re sitting there watching the game and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go on my phone or my iPad and check out San Diego State.’ And we’re already one of the most applied-to schools as it is. I think we had 110,000 applicants this past year between undergrad and grad school, so it will be interesting to see what that number potentially rises to.” As for what the future holds, Wicker notes: “We continue to have great conversations with people, and we’re waiting for the Pac-12 to finish their TV deal, and hopefully we’ll have an opportunity moving forward.” (link)

Kansas AD Goff says that “great strides have been made inside the walls of Allen Fieldhouse, with a focus on the east side entrance and premium donor spaces. You will see a new team store this season that will serve as a major enhancement for all of our fans for both men’s and women’s basketball.” The Kansas City Star’s Laddha adds that renovations to the arena also include the creation of a “Jayhawk pub” that will be a hospitality space for fans. Meanwhile, Goff notes the Jayhawks are “progressing in schematic design and have recently hired a construction manager who is refining the phased approach, timeline and cost projections” for the Memorial Stadium gateway project. The cost of the project was not revealed, but Goff says: “I am working daily with our development team and campus leaders to create a viable financial plan and raise the needed funds from our generous supporters. As we’ve said from the start, philanthropic support will be the catalyst to fulfilling this transformative project.” The Anderson Football Complex continues to make progress and is expected to be unveiled in July. New on Connect: “Marketpryce Co-Founder/CEO Bergman and Connect's Garcia Cichosz are joined by Arizona Softball student-athlete Pacho and former Marshall football student-athlete Miller to learn hear their perspective on today's NIL landscape, including the experience of collaborating with Marketpryce on individual and team-wide deals. Pacho and Miller share more about how NIL has shaped their collegiate experience and opened the doors to post-collegiate career opportunities and offer advice for administrators as the space continues to evolve. Pacho: “I will say there were people that came and promised us a lot and it was nothing after, so having Marketpryce say, ‘Here, this is what NIL is. We have this deal for you, and you can go run with it or you can decide to work with someone else. Just giving us so many opportunities is what stands out to me the most.” (link)
