BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi to discuss how administrators should handle presidential transitions on their respective campuses. Abbott’s key point for leaders: “If you wait until you know your president is leaving to try to position yourself, then in my opinion, you’re too late.” Communicating the value of athletics both internally and externally is clearly a main pillar for a successful transition, but Abbott notes administrators should be active across the entire campus, adding: “ADs and athletic administrators in general have to be active participants and have to embrace the idea that you are the visible sort of leader and mouthpiece for the athletic department, and it's just as important and maybe more important to do that internally as it is externally. […] What you can never forget is the biggest donor to the athletic department is the university. So you better spend just as much or more time cultivating those relationships, sharing your vision, and contributing to the mission internally as you do externally.” Looking back on his four different presidents as the AD at Oklahoma City (NAIA), Abbott recalls it took time to determine if the new leader was for or against him, noting of the former president who was not for him initially: “He had to come to that position on his own, but the sum of our culture and the work that we were doing helped lead him in that direction.” Tons more insights. NCAA SVP of Inclusion, Education and Community Engagement Felicia Martin visits with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the NCAA and Team IMPACT's strategic collaboration to foster long-term relationships between collegiate student-athletes and children facing serious illnesses or disabilities to inspire and promote belonging, empowerment and resilience. On the importance of community service and engagement and why the NCAA feels the social responsibility to join up with Team IMPACT: “When I think about the importance of service, and specifically the way that we want to serve our communities, it’s about who we are as corporate citizens. It’s our ability to strengthen communities, where we live, where we work, where our children are going to school and also, that’s the kind of model that we want for our student-athletes. We understand that the importance of both the national office and our NCAA member schools to give back is vitally important. What we want to do is model the importance of volunteerism and to show examples of the impactfulness [of] charitable organizations and non-profits in our communities and how those are environments that need our platform, need our influence. It’s our opportunity to again strengthen our communities by working on gaps and solutions and building collaborations and actually using the brand in a way that would benefit the communities we live in.” More from Martin. The Atlantic’s Rose Horowitch takes a look at the “civil war” that is taking place between elite-university presidents and chancellors in the Ivy League and the South, writing: “The leaders of America’s elite universities are required, by the borderline-masochistic, semi-impossible nature of their job, to be skilled in the art of performative comity. So it was a bit of a shock when, at the end of an April panel discussion, Princeton (DI) President Christopher Eisgruber turned on the chancellors of Vanderbilt (DI) and WashU, all but accusing them of carrying water for the Trump administration. Eisgruber argued that higher education was facing a politically motivated attack, and that the two men were inadvertently making matters worse by agreeing with President Donald Trump, against the evidence, that the sector had grown illiberal and out of touch with mainstream America. The chancellors, taken aback by the public confrontation, countered that the struggles of a handful of Ivy League schools were dragging down the reputation of America’s heavyweight research institutions. Perhaps, they suggested, it was time for the Ivies’ leaders to step back and let new figures – such as themselves – represent the country’s top universities. The argument, which took place at a Washington, D.C., meeting of the Association of American Universities, which Eisgruber chairs, went on for about 15 minutes, according to multiple people in attendance. The tone was civil, but awkward. The three public-university presidents unlucky enough to also be on the panel sat in bewildered silence. Meanwhile, many in the audience of assembled presidents shifted in their chairs and stared at their phones. James Moore & Co.’s Katie Davis and Ken Kurdziel on the most recent episode of the News & Brews Sports Biz podcast unpack how the One Big Beautiful Bill Act reshapes charitable giving and examine why international student-athletes present unique revenue-share risks. The law, they explain, now allows non-itemizers to deduct up to $1K ($2K if married) in cash gifts – which is “a win…since about 90% of filers do not itemize” – but adds a 0.5% AGI floor and caps the deduction rate at 35% for high earners, changes that Kurdziel says could drive “accelerating donations before December 31, 2025” along with more use of donor-advised funds (DAFs) and qualified charitable distributions. Ticket-linked gifts remain non-deductible, and DAFs cannot fund per-seat obligations. Lots more. (link)
