AthleticDirectorU has released Part 2 of its survey on industrywide burnout, which focuses on the qualitative context for Part 1’s quantitative analysis. By and large, respondents expressed their levels of burnout, exhaustion and disengagement were attributable to one or more of three main factors: respect from leadership, compensation and/or workload. One former Group of 5 Deputy AD: “I left college athletics in 2023 after 30+ years, not due to fatigue or lack of energy. I grew tired of a business model that calls for spending more money than we have and churning, burning and underpaying our critical frontline workers. As an industry, we have also managed to devalue education. Like corporate America, college athletics has adopted a ‘Leaders Eat First’ mentality. I had a great career and loved the work and relationships. Don’t like what we’ve become.” One G5 Marketing Director explains why they left the industry after a decade: “Not every family can afford to support their post-college grad who took a $12K assistant role because that’s what’s required to break into the business. There’s also enormous pressure within conference realignment for schools to match what the bigger schools are doing in content and marketing despite the budgets remaining the same for those departments. And few things hurt worse than entire staffs going five years without a raise while your coaches and AD continue to get raises and bonuses. I haven’t looked back once with sadness or regret since leaving.” A Power 4 Marketing Director adds: “College athletics has turned into an all-around miserable environment. … You are working harder than ever to make your athletic director, head coaches, and now the athletes multi-millionaires, all while your pay has not increased at all.” Still, several respondents maintain a positive outlook on both their roles and the industry. For instance, one FCS AD says: “College athletics these days is certainly different. The NIL space can be a total burnout, but all other aspects of working with our teams and student-athletes is incredibly rewarding.” Lots more on ADU. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White discusses several topics with VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs, including growth of the Vols’ resource base: “...sponsorship numbers have doubled. Our fundraising numbers are up 375% since 2021. A lot of that is philanthropy. A lot of that is seat-based giving. So, that’s new premium spaces, that’s selling out the stadiums. Our ticket numbers have grown, obviously significantly. Our major gift fundraising is up 700% since 2021.” Asked how he manages frustration with the general state of affairs, White explains: “I don’t do the best job of it. Sometimes it’s been difficult. I say a bunch. Sometimes I put the Tennessee hat [on] and just say, ‘you know what, F it. Nobody is listening. We’re just going to look for every competitive advantage possible.’ And I need to do that. I owe it to our student-athletes, our coaches, our fan base to make sure I’m doing that because I think in some ways, less regulation is an advantage for us because of our resource base powered through our fan base. But I also know that we need a healthy ecosystem in college sports. We want to dominate that healthy ecosystem. But college sports needs to get fixed.” More. (link)

More from Utah AD Mark Harlan as he comments on the SCORE Act: “I do think…[the current system] is going to have to be solved by federal legislation. I will say there’s more momentum there than there has been. We expect a bill to pass in the House here shortly. In the Senate, it’s going to have some problems. Both sides I think understand that the graduation rates are going to plummet and we’re going to be where we were in the 70s...where student-athletes were just not graduating, and it’s a shame.” Meanwhile, the Utes are doing what they can to incentivize remaining on campus, including signing some student-athletes to multiyear revenue-sharing deals. Harlan: “Well, we’re just starting, right? So it’ll be interesting to see, but there’s language in these contracts that talks about possible loss of value if they leave. We’re just all going to play it out, and then how harsh Jason (Greco, Utah’s executive senior associate athletics director for governance and brand strategy) is going to tell me to be. I love the kid and I don’t want to hold kids back. I’m not in the business for that, so we’re just going to have to kind of figure it out as we go.” (link)

Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite pens a profile for Hero Sports of McNeese AD Heath Schroyer, highlighting how his farm-laboring childhood and extensive basketball coaching experience have helped foster the school’s blue-collar mentality. Schroyer: “There were absolutely no off-days. You show up, roll your sleeves up, and get to work. It’s the same concept [at McNeese]. We work now to reap the rewards later. … I’ve never worked in an ivory tower and I don’t want to. Whether it’s visiting the training room after a game or spending a day with donors, I roll my sleeves up. That’s what I’ve always done. I wouldn’t trade how I was raised for anything. That background built me. It gave me discipline, structure, and grit. I bring those into this job every day.” In the five years since taking over in Lake Charles, according to Smurthwaite, “McNeese has raised more than $25 million for facility upgrades and construction. Schroyer helped secure funding for a new $32 million football press box, a $4 million baseball complex, and multi-million-dollar locker room and weight room renovations across the board. The school signed its first all-sports deal with Under Armour and now is a national brand.” Lots more. (link)

Western Illinois AD Paul Bubb talks about the role of guarantee games in football and explains: “The impact is it's a financial windfall, if you will. … For the Illinois game, we are being paid $500K. For the Northwestern game, we'll be getting $400K and that money goes into our budget to help do some things for us. This time around, that money will help us make sure that we get new turf put in the football stadium next summer. So it's a reward back to the football program and what they're doing, but also helps our overall budget in what we do there.” Bubb also discusses the importance of football and says: “I believe in FCS football and I believe there's talented young men there that sometimes there's not enough FBS schools for them to go to. And I think that there's a place for us. College athletics right now is an interesting time. Certainly the [Power 4] are really calling the shots on what's going on – the schools at the major conferences, especially the Big Ten and the SEC. And it seems like at times where the rest of us are along for the ride. But I do believe that there will be continued good times in college football. … The social atmosphere that's developed around football is unlike any other sport. People can rally around basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and have great experiences. But football brings together an entire community on a single day, more so than any other sport that I've ever seen or been involved with.” (link)

Alabama State announces the release of its Strategic Dominance new strategic plan, which is built on the following core values: Be Prepared – Commitment to Excellence through readiness in academics, athletics, and life; Be Professional – Integrity and respect in all that we do; Perform at a High Level – Striving for excellence in every practice, competition, and endeavor; and Dominate – Embracing a relentless pursuit of purposeful impact and legacy. The plan also includes the following strategic priorities: Service, Excellence, Experience, Development and Sustainability. Hornets AD Jason Cable: "Strategic Dominance is not just a plan. It defines who we are, how we operate, and where we're going as a department. It ensures that every student-athlete, coach, and staff member is aligned with our core values and focused on sustainable success." (link)

Opendorse Co-Founder/President Blake Lawrence explains why he does not believe schools will abide by NIL Go guidelines: “If they enforce it, they’re going to get sued. Say a collective offers an athlete compensation and gets rejected for whatever reason. I think that athlete’s still going to cash that check, make that money. The College Sports Commission could go and tell the school, ‘That kid accepted and got paid for a deal that we said he can’t. You need to rule him ineligible.’ The school’s going to say, ‘I”m not ruling him ineligible. I’m not going to tell him to give the money back.’ Because guess who's going to get sued in that situation? The school. You’re going to have a kid miss a game when one game a year is worth $100K a year in his transfer fee? Are you kidding me? Then the College Sports Commission is going to say, ‘If you don’t bench the kid, you’re in trouble.’ So, one market has to go all the way through this scenario. … That’s when this whole thing’s actually going to get regulated. And no school wants to be the first one to get that.” (link)

FootballScoop’s John Brice highlights how some football programs are tweaking their practice schedules and locations, including Notre Dame, which has practiced on the first three Sundays of this month, including a night session inside Notre Dame Stadium, as the Fighting Irish prepare to take on Miami (FL) under the lights to kick off the 2025 campaign. Fighting Irish Football HC Marcus Freeman: "You try to make the scrimmage about something to simulate some type of game environment where there is a reward for winning. And, losers are losers. So, we try to create that type of environment to see your guys compete with a little pressure. They competed. They did a really good job competing.” Missouri, meanwhile, held a practice on Saturday at Lindenwood, which is roughly 100 miles from Columbia, and Tigers HC Eli Drinkwitz explains: "I wanted to see where we were at. I wanted to see from a mentality standpoint, would we start fast. Did we have the right mindset? Did we come out ready to play? In a road game, you can't ease into it. You look at our poor performances last year, three of them we were really, really slow." At Alabama, HC Kalen DeBoer deliberately started practice 90 minutes late to simulate a weather delay. "We actually had it originally scheduled earlier, moved it back just to get a little more heat. It's good for us. We even conditioned at the end, did some extra work. And, so, just trying to get ready in every way possible." More. (link)

Florida State’s Doak Campbell Stadium will have a new playing surface to go along with the massive stadium renovations that will be unveiled to the public on August 30 when the Seminoles open the football season by hosting Alabama. Warchant’s Ira Schoffel: “The work is scheduled to begin Monday morning, with the existing surface being removed and replaced with a ‘lay and play’ field, which will be ready for competition later this week. While traditional fields need time to take root inside of a stadium, ‘lay and play’ fields are thicker, and they are grown and harvested specifically to be played on immediately.” An FSU spokesperson says several professional stadiums have moved to this approach, and it’s the same way fields are installed for the Super Bowl and events such as the World Cup. The new field is expected to cost at least $300-350K, but the university has not confirmed that figure. (link)

A College Football Playoff with as many as 28 teams was presented to the Big Ten ADs last week for the first time. According to The Athletic’s Ralph Russo, the Big Ten was expected to send a slide deck with some details of the plan to the SEC this week. Russo adds: “This new idea would have the Big Ten and SEC receive seven or six auto-bids while the Big 12 and ACC receive two fewer, in the hopes of assuaging fears in the Big 12 and ACC of being marginalized. Both the 28- and 24-team brackets would leave four slots for non-automatic qualifiers. A 28-team field would include four first-round byes and a second round of games played entirely at home stadiums. A 24-team field would have eight byes, and again, two rounds of home games. First-round games could be organized to emphasize matchups between teams in different conferences. The plan would be an extension of the intraconference play-in game idea, with matchups across conferences as Playoff games. A Playoff this big would also require some restructuring of conference television deals that now include championship games, creating a lot of new broadcast inventory in return for eliminating showdowns between the leagues’ top two teams. It would also raise questions about whether ESPN, which currently owns the broadcast rights to all the CFP games, would still hold claim over what would essentially be a new play-in round.” The next meeting of the full CFP management committee is September 24 at the Big Ten offices. (link); CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello “can confirm Big Ten is no longer focused on 16-team CFP with multiple AQs. Tony Petitti is pitching ideas of a CFP with more than 16. … There is one model he prefers. [ESPN’s] Pete Thamel reports the Big Ten is discussing 24- and 28-team models.” (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan says the Utes are pretty close to the 75/15/5/5 revenue share split outlined in the House settlement: “I will just say we have some teams, female teams that are receiving rev share and additional scholarships. We have some men’s teams that are, we have some men’s teams that are not, and we have some women’s teams that are not.” As for potential changes with how the university handles athletics: “We’re working with the university to say, ‘What things can we look at?’ We rent the stadium, for example. We had to rent the (press box) room tonight. It’s just the system. I’m not complaining. Is that really the smartest path going forward?” Also, on the topic of potentially increasing football ticket prices: “There’s a number that we can hit out there in ticket sales … that we will see people stop renewing. We’re very, very well aware of that, so we have to be very cautious as we proceed with that.” (link)

Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon Q&As with The Dispatch’s Colin Damms. On how his coaches are responding to so much industry change: “We met as a department staff (Thursday) morning, and we reflected on this time last year, when we talked about a lot of the changes that were coming down the pike. At that time, we said this is going to take all of us.… With roster limits now being the thing, and scholarship limits going away, we’ve talked to all of our coaches about scholarship increases. We’re going to have 53 new scholarships this year, which is fantastic. It’s painful on the bottom line at times, but that’s the core of what we’re doing is trying to provide scholarships for young people …I think we all want more answers as far as the rules and circumvention rules to the cap that we’re working through. What’s next year’s true number going to be from a rev share standpoint? We don’t know that yet, but our coaches have been so collaborative and helpful. In an imperfect system that we’re all in right now, it’s not just at Mississippi State, ‘cause there are so many unanswered questions out there that we’re all trying to seek answers for.” (link)

The Atlantic’s Rose Horowitch takes a look at the “civil war” that is taking place between elite-university presidents and chancellors in the Ivy League and the South, writing: “The leaders of America’s elite universities are required, by the borderline-masochistic, semi-impossible nature of their job, to be skilled in the art of performative comity. So it was a bit of a shock when, at the end of an April panel discussion, Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber turned on the chancellors of Vanderbilt and Washington University in St. Louis, all but accusing them of carrying water for the Trump administration. Eisgruber argued that higher education was facing a politically motivated attack, and that the two men were inadvertently making matters worse by agreeing with President Donald Trump, against the evidence, that the sector had grown illiberal and out of touch with mainstream America. The chancellors, taken aback by the public confrontation, countered that the struggles of a handful of Ivy League schools were dragging down the reputation of America’s heavyweight research institutions. Perhaps, they suggested, it was time for the Ivies’ leaders to step back and let new figures – such as themselves – represent the country’s top universities. The argument, which took place at a Washington, D.C., meeting of the Association of American Universities, which Eisgruber chairs, went on for about 15 minutes, according to multiple people in attendance. The tone was civil, but awkward. The three public-university presidents unlucky enough to also be on the panel sat in bewildered silence. Meanwhile, many in the audience of assembled presidents shifted in their chairs and stared at their phones. When time finally ran out, some thanked a higher power.” Lots more on the increasingly fraught higher ed sector. (link)

While VMI did not opt in to rev sharing for this year, that does not mean the Keydets are closing the door on doing so in the future. VMI has formed a working group to determine if the school should opt in for the 2026-27 school years and will make a recommendation to the Board of Visitors next month. AD Jamaal Walton: “We’re really just trying to figure out what makes sense for VMI. We’ve got to keep our options open. … We’ve got to be true to who we are. We’ve got to be honest with these kids up front. If it’s someone that isn’t coming here because of the revenue sharing, it’s probably the kid we didn’t want at the school to begin with. We want somebody that’s fully invested … to the VMI experience.” Additionally, VMI has had a $1M deficit each of the past three years and projects a similar one this fiscal. Of note, VMI and fellow military school The Citadel were the two Southern Conference members that opted out. The other military schools in Division I - Army, Navy and Air Force - also opted out. Carolina Insider visits with new North Carolina Chief Revenue Officer Rick Barakat on what he’s looking to accomplish in his new role and what he believes made him the right fit for the position. Barakat: “What we’re trying to do is take a very proactive and aggressive look at all of our revenue streams, both current or future, and make sure, honestly, that we’re optimizing those to the best of our ability here at Carolina across all those verticals. So, that’s going to be everything from what we do from a sponsorship standpoint, working closely with our partners at Learfield, how we drive revenue through the gameday experience, things such as F&B sales, merchandise sales, looking into the tailgate activation areas with RevelXP, and then what new we can create. … What new inventory can we unlock? Can we create more that would develop more opportunities for us to drive new revenue streams? And then, you’re looking at endemic things like ticketing. What’s the ticketing approach? What’s the pricing dynamic there with ticketing? How do we want to address that both present and future as we grow the programs across all sports, not only football and basketball, but we’re taking a deeper look at our Olympic sports offerings and our ticket policy there as well.” Lots more. More from Denton Record-Chronicle writer Brett Vito’s periodic series on North Texas’ efforts to lay out a path forward in the era of NIL, noting that for UNT Senior Assoc. AD for NIL/GM Steve Keasler, he would describe the last few months as “building the ship while we’re sailing it.” With North Texas’ $53M athletic budget ranked sixth of 13 schools in the league in 2023-24, and the American having set a minimum of $10M in additional benefits for its schools to distribute over the next three years to student-athletes, funding is more important than ever with money now going directly to student-athletes. UNT AD Jared Mosley: “If we’re not going to fund our programs to the same degree others are, we know what the results of that are going to be on the fields and courts of competition. Our goal is to continue to charge ahead in that area while getting people to step up and help us.“ Keasler was brought in to help guide that charge despite facing challenges that have included the departure of star Football student-athlete Chandler Morris to Virginia. Keasler: “We worked hard and had some great people come forward to try to help. At the time, we thought we were doing what we needed to do to keep him. We talked to Chandler about $300K, $400K, $500K, but we weren’t even in the ball game. He went for $1.2M, or something like that. We were completely money whipped.” More from Vito. (link)

Front Office Sports’ Andrew Goodrich touches on the issue of student-athletes' questionable cybersecurity practices, highlighting that in light of recent scrutiny surrounding the Venmo history of Oklahoma student-athlete John Mateer, experts stress the locking down of such apps. Louisville Cybersecurity Laboratory Director Roman Yampolskiy: “Public financial transaction histories, even when they seem innocuous, can reveal sensitive behavioral data. For high-profile athletes, these records can expose patterns of spending, locations, and relationships, making them targets for scams, blackmail, or unwanted public scrutiny.” Yampolskiy continues on to note that “because they operate under strict compliance rules, NCAA athletes should take special care to keep their financial transactions private. Venmo requires users to include a note about the payment they’re making (for example, ‘coffee’ or ‘Uber’), and if the user’s profile isn’t set to private, there’s potential to ‘create the perception, or evidence, of rule violations. This is not just a privacy matter; it’s a reputational and career risk management issue.” New Haven Tagliatela College of Engineering Assoc. Professor Vahid Behzadan recommends a peer-to-peer student privacy policy that includes defaulting accounts to “private” for transaction and friend lists, educating student-athletes to avoid jokes, slang or emojis that could be misinterpreted as violations and requiring athletes to review privacy settings each season. Behzadan: “It’s a stark reminder of how quickly a digital ‘paper trail’ can spiral out of control. What might seem like casual or humorous labeling among friends can take on an entirely different meaning when viewed by a national audience.” (link)
