College Football Playoff Executive Director Rich Clark says he “would rather stay at this than rush to a decision that’s not good. So if the decision is that we stay at the 12-team playoff until we know more, until we watch that another year, until we can discuss the other options on the table a little bit more, it’s worth sticking to the 12 team until we can come to really a solid, sound decision for the future.” Clark says of the Big Ten’s recent proposal that “it is a larger, more expansive version of the 16-team playoff. But it’s something that we’ll have to dig into the details and really understand it. But I’m sure there’s a lot of merit to it, but we’ll have to look at what the cons are as well, because there’s obviously going to be some cost to doing that. But if the costs don’t outweigh the benefits, it has merit. … The thing I like about it is it’s another idea. And as many ideas as we can get on the table and really have the discussion now, so that we’re not doing something later – that we go, ‘I wish we had thought of this, or wish we thought of that.’ That’s not what we want. So if there’s an idea that comes out, we want it on the table. We want to be able to discuss it.” (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch provides an update on the north end zone construction at Memorial Stadium, noting the “magnitude of the project sort of speaks for itself. We will soon be shifting into sales mode. Now that we get through this season, full sales mode for those premium opportunities going into next year. … We do remain on target from a construction standpoint. A couple of interesting tidbits: They have been working 24 hour shifts. So I doubt you all are out here at two o’clock in the morning checking on that. But they are working 24 hours here in recent weeks and over the next few weeks. … And the other other tidbit is that we will remain under construction on game days. So, we’re going to stop once the gates open. But it is safe, so as fans are out there seeing it, they’re seeing steel continue to fly, or a lot of workers out there and during their tailgates. That is planned and appropriate, but we assure fans that it’s safe, and we’ll make sure we shut it down before the gates are actually open.” While the numbers are still being crunched on the overall capacity once the project is completed (MU anticipates a net gain), Veatch notes the Tigers are adding about 3,000 premium seats, “which is a huge opportunity for us, particularly given in this era of need for revenue.” More from Veatch along with some progress photos inside. More from Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock’s presentation to the VT Board of Visitors, during which Babcock estimated the Hokies’ annual regional economic impact was roughly $94M. Babcock noted that athletics brings 500K visitors each year to campus and warned that further deterioration, even the status quo, he warned, jeopardizes those contributions. “It drives me every day, and quite frankly, it’s taken a few years off my life.” The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel adds: “Babcock doesn’t like the optics of asking the general student body to fund payments to athletes and reminded the board that schools such as Clemson and North Carolina have taken other steps to fund athletics. Those measures include in-state costs for out-of-state scholarships and directing state gambling revenue to athletics.” Also from Babcock: “I’m not after anybody here. I’m not mad, I’m not blaming anybody. I love this place. I love working for [President Tim] Sands. I’m frustrated that we haven’t changed the funding model, sure. We’ve been talking about it for years. … There are many worthy mouths to feed. However, we must move quickly now regarding athletics, simply because outside forces have dictated it and the financial and economic impacts at stake.” (link)

UTRGV AD Chasse Conque joins The Rio Grande Podcast to reflect on the university’s long-awaited launch of DI football, which kicks off this season. Conque describes a mix of “excitement, anxiety, and gratitude” as the program nears its debut. Conque also emphasizes that football is more than a sport for UTRGV – it’s a branding engine and community rallying point. The program, he continues, promises an economic jolt due to hotel stays, restaurant visits and construction jobs tied to nearly $180M in athletic facility investments, including the Vaqueros Performance Center. Season tickets are already sold out, with Conque estimating 15–20K fans around the stadium on opening night. Conque adds: “[Football] was the missing piece of our portfolio. It was the one piece that we didn't have. We're so proud of our full 18 sports; the other 17 are extremely important to us, but we needed this last piece to really be a complete athletics department and we wanted to make sure that we gave our students on campus the complete collegiate experience.” Full podcast. Front Office Sports’ Andrew Goodrich digs into Middle Tennessee’s three-year plan attempting to gain a financial and competitive edge over its competition. Backed by Football GM Dana Marquez, the Blue Raiders have successfully managed to re-invest $668K into the football program through the elimination of two uniforms (black and gray) and four of their helmets. Marquez: “How are we going to best compete against different positions if we’re sitting here spending money on stuff that really we’re only wearing one time a year? We just went with one color, and we did a game helmet and a practice helmet.” Per Goodrich, the helmet reductions will save $500K and eliminating the two uniforms will save $84K each, with money going toward easing salary-cap burdens and hiring new people within the football program, while 30% of the roster will receive some sort of NIL payout from the savings. There’s one catch, however, as the players have to earn the money by working directly for the Blue Raiders or through helping sell tickets. Marquez: “If we’re going to pay you $2,000 a month and you want to make $4,000, you’ve got to work to get the $4,000. And we show you how to do that. … What it’s doing collectively is getting [the players] engaged in the community, and now our fan base is now recognizing our players. That’s what NIL was supposed to be.” (link)

Legal Matters…
➤ According to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming, five former Wisconsin women’s basketball student-athletes are suing their ex-HC Marisa Moseley, former Assoc. AD for External Communications & women’s basketball sport administrator Justin Doherty and the University’s Board of Regents for unspecified damages claiming mental and psychological abuse. Per the suit, Moseley allegedly “bullied her players, discriminated against their disabilities or perceived disabilities, and interfered with their mental health treatment. Several players experienced severe mental health challenges in the program, after which they were met with retaliation and abuse from Moseley, according to the filing, which also claims that the school failed to act after multiple players reported the alleged behavior.” (link)
➤ A U.S. District Court judge has denied preliminary injunctions for USC football student-athlete DJ Wingfield and UCLA football student-athlete Kaedin Robinson that would have allowed the two to play the 2025 season. In a court filing, Wingfield stated he stood to make roughly $210K to play this season while Robinson claimed he was offered a $450K NIL contract by UCLA. The judge did not find the NCAA’s five-year rule to be commercial in nature and wrote that the five-month delay in Wingfield requesting a temporary restraining order after being ruled ineligible in March weakened the urgency of Wingfield’s claims of “irreparable harm.” (link, link)
➤ The Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje adds the following rationale from the judge: “There is a subtle difference between a rule that retrains NIL compensation and a rule that limits one’s potential to negotiate a NIL agreement. Putting aside the NIL agreements, the question of whether a player’s time has run remains in full force. The eligibility question is not tethered to the question of compensation or commercial transaction.” Kartje also notes the judge denied the “request for injunctive relief from both players, as well as San Diego linebacker Jagger Giles.” (link)
➤ A judge in a state court in Michigan has granted a preliminary injunction allowing Eastern Michigan football student-athlete Blake Bustard to remain on the football team while he challenges a five-year eligibility cap for college athletes, saying the player has shown a likelihood of success at trial on his claims. Take a tour of the progress Utah is making on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, the new home of the Utes’ baseball team. The new venue will feature permanent seating for 1,200 fans with additional grass berm seating in the outfield that brings the overall capacity to 3,000. Baseball support areas on-site will include locker rooms, coaches' offices, medical space, equipment storage, indoor batting/pitching cages and press box. (link)

One way Penn State is getting back some of the capacity lost during its $700M Beaver Stadium renovation is by “deploying Spacecubes, a rectangular temporary structure product created by an Australian company of the same name and distributed in North American by InProduction," according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who adds: “The two companies inked a deal earlier this year in which InProduction – among the world’s leading temporary structure gurus – buys Spacecube units from the Aussies at a favorable price and shares a cut of profits.” The units measure 20 feet by 8 feet and arrive “pre-kitted with electricity and plumbing. They can travel six to a truck, making the Spacecube’s shipping costs much cheaper than similar products that typically fit one or two per truck, said InProduction CEO Jason Tedrow. [...] The units are being used in their most basic form as a makeshift press box on Beaver Stadium’s west side, as well as temporary hospitality on the opposite side of the stadium in a bit more jazzed-up form. The use of temporary seating and other types of structures is helping lessen the financial blow of a large part of the stadium missing during football season.” (link)

UCLA will partner with NIL agency Article 41 to help its student-athletes build their personal brands through social media strategies, content creation and other avenues to enhance NIL opportunities, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch, who notes Article 41 will have staffers on campus. Georgia is asking students this football season to bring a form of photo ID to each of the seven home games, and some will be randomly selected with what the school says will be “spot checks” to match their ID to the name on individual tickets. The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer explains that UGA is attempting to minimize the number of students who sell tickets, and ‘if Georgia determines a student ticket was sold, the student ticket package will be voided and removed for the rest of the season and the students found to not have their name match the ticket will be asked to leave.” (link)

Inside Texas reports that “the UT System Board of Regents is set to approve a contract extension for (Texas) athletics director Chris Del Conte at its upcoming meeting that will keep him in Austin through 2036. The extension will bump up CDC's salary by 18.4%.” The deal will reportedly average $3.5M over its length before maxing out at $4.25M during the final year of the agreement. Non-guaranteed compensation becomes available starting in FY 2031 with unspecified performance incentives of $475K up to $600K in FY 2036. Also included are the option of two dealer cars, or $7.5K in lieu of one of the cars annually, as well as memberships to the Texas Club, the UT Golf Club and the Headliners Club of Austin. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams provide the details on how North Carolina plans to compensate its top two athletic officials during a planned two-year leadership transition. Current AD Bubba Cunningham is slated to earn $903K in base compensation annually over the next two years, including his first year serving as “Senior Advisor,” according to a contract extension he signed last month. His successor, former RFK Racing President Steve Newmark, will receive $600K during the upcoming academic year, while shadowing Cunningham, before taking over as AD next summer at which time his base salary will rise to $1M annually through June 2029. As a result, UNC will effectively be paying both men AD salaries during the 2026-27 academic year with both “eligible for the same performance bonuses, which could add hundreds of thousands of dollars to their compensation. Incentives include five-figure payouts if Tar Heels men’s or women’s basketball teams secure NCAA Tournament bids or if UNC football, now coached by Bill Belichick, reaches a bowl game.” From July 2027-June 2029, following his first year in his new role, Cunningham “will earn $540K in base salary plus a discretionary bonus equal to half his pay. He is also eligible for eight more ‘longevity incentive compensation awards’ of $110,409 each—totaling $883,272—between now and June 2027. In 2026 alone, those incentives could provide him nearly half a million dollars on top of his base pay, meaning Cunningham would substantially out-earn his successor during the transition year.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that “Toledo has agreed to a three-year contract extension with athletic director Bryan Blair, which includes a salary/bonuses increase. He signed a five-year deal upon his hiring in February of 2022, and this deal extends him back to five years. In his time at Toledo, the Rockets have won 13 MAC titles and fundraising is up more than 250%. He initiated the first stadium concert at the Glass Bowl when Zac Brown Band played. The move comes under new President Dr. James Holloway, who is a strong athletics supporter.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter mentions that “an email from (NCAA President) Charlie Baker went out today to all high school athletes & their family members registered with the NCAA eligibility center. It asks for support of the SCORE Act, warning college athletes may have indefinite eligibility without the bill. This email went to many people. To play in NCAA certified events (think club team tournaments), high school athletes must be registered with the eligibility center. The email doesn’t mention the other aspects of the SCORE Act beyond giving ‘legal clarity’ for eligibility rules.“ (link)

The Big Ten’s mega College Football Playoff format idea, which would potentially expand the event from 12 to as many as 24 or 28 teams, reportedly came to light through leaks before many of the other FBS commissioners were personally informed by the idea’s architect, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. According to CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, that “intensified frustration” throughout the sport with one CFP executive stating that “we sound like immature children throwing garbage against the wall,” while an SEC administrator remarked that “it's frustrating that these topics can't be discussed behind the scenes and brought out to the public once they've been vetted.” Reportedly, the idea was originally floated with Big Ten ADs last week and then the SEC, but other conferences were left in the dark until the information leaked, making the proposal a surprise. Despite sources within the Big Ten noting the “designs remain in their infancy” and the frustration over the info’s method of release, several SEC ADs surveyed by CBS Sports “were receptive to the Big Ten's pitch, though there was no consensus. Reaction was also mixed in the ACC and Big 12. Executives in the Group of Six conferences were not in favor.” One ACC AD even told Marcello: “I like it. We need to continue to evolve.” (link)

As SBJ’s Bret McCormick wonders whether investment in real estate and facilities could be the cleanest path for private equity to make its entrance into collegiate athletics, American Commissioner Tim Pernetti, who has been meeting regularly with PE firms, remarks: “...maybe the ideal capital partner for us at the American offers us a menu of services. Rather than this being about capital and creating rules around it, wouldn’t it be interesting if we had a private capital partner where University A could work with them on how to invest their endowment and University B could lean in and do some creative real estate financing to accelerate some projects, and University C could draw down some capital to accelerate more inventory in the stadium and premium at basketball and generate revenue ... that might be the answer. But as you think about real estate -- I can’t stress this enough -- physical, revenue-generating spaces provide tangible community impact, new revenue and long-term stability. And if you pair that with fan experiences, you can show this multi-layered value proposition for private capital in collegiate athletics. … It’s going to require everybody to open their eyes. The business needs money. Stop apologizing for it. Let’s go out and find it.” (link)

The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel reports live from Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock’s presentation to the VT Board of Visitors about the future of college sports and notes Babcock “estimates VT's annual share of House (settlement) back damages at $1.5M. Settlement is for 10 years. So $15M aggregate. Babcock says VT has had internal discussions for years about greater campus support for athletics, ‘but we didn't evolve quite fast enough.’” Babcock also tells the board that "significant [TV] money is being left on the table" because the four power conferences "aren't on the same page." If the Hokies "don't radically leap forward now," Babcock says they risk "falling into irrelevance. … It costs money to win. It also costs money to lose.” Babcock adds that "our resources don't match our expectations,” and he reiterates his prediction that the Big Ten and SEC will follow ACC's lead on unequal revenue distribution based on success and brand powers. Babcock also notes the Hokies will surpass their $400M fundraising goal in the Reach for Excellence campaign that runs through June 2027. $332M has been pledged to date. Babcock to the board: "I don't plan on doing this job for too many more years based on my choosing or y'all's choosing." Asked what level of funding he’s seeking, Babcock explains that to be competitive in ACC, Virginia Tech needs an annual budget of $200M. He estimates the 2025-26 budget at $144M. “If we don’t radically leap forward now, we are likely sealing our own fate for years and generations to come." (link)

The Board of Governors Executive Committee has approved a $140 per-semester increase to Missouri State’s 2025-26 student-athletic fee for those taking seven-or-more in-person hours. With the fee now sitting at $200, an increase of more than 233%, The Standard’s Maddux Radosevic reports that AD Patrick Ransdell hopes the fund “will cover the necessary expenses for the ‘significant increase’ in travel in the more geographically spread out CUSA and student-athlete nutrition improvement” while allowing them to avoid “continuing to go back to the well” for more money in the future. NCAA SVP of Inclusion, Education and Community Engagement Felicia Martin visits with College.town’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the NCAA and Team IMPACT's strategic collaboration to foster long-term relationships between collegiate student-athletes and children facing serious illnesses or disabilities to inspire and promote belonging, empowerment and resilience. On the importance of community service and engagement and why the NCAA feels the social responsibility to join up with Team IMPACT: “When I think about the importance of service, and specifically the way that we want to serve our communities, it’s about who we are as corporate citizens. It’s our ability to strengthen communities, where we live, where we work, where our children are going to school and also, that’s the kind of model that we want for our student-athletes. We understand that the importance of both the national office and our NCAA member schools to give back is vitally important. What we want to do is model the importance of volunteerism and to show examples of the impactfulness [of] charitable organizations and non-profits in our communities and how those are environments that need our platform, need our influence. It’s our opportunity to again strengthen our communities by working on gaps and solutions and building collaborations and actually using the brand in a way that would benefit the communities we live in.” More from Martin. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy profiles Excel Sports Management Senior Director of of Brand Marketing and Experiential Matt Kelly, whose clients include SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon, SMU AD Damon Evans and Michigan State AD J Batt, among others, and Selmon notes: “One of his superpowers is making meaningful relationships with people in our industry.” Kelly has also provided legal counsel on employment agreements or tax structure to Clemson AD Graham Neff, West Virginia AD Wren Baker, TCU AD Mike Buddie, Baylor AD Mack Rhoades and Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey. As the industry continues to evolve, Portnoy points out that Kelly has become a “Swiss Army Knife” for athletic departments, and UCLA AD Martin Jarmond explains: “As this industry has gotten more complex and has become more professional, you need people that can speak the language of corporate, college [and] contract law. He’s a bridge. He is a navigator of deals.” South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati adds: “It’s not uncommon to be with him and he’s got his AirPods in, talking to someone about a deal, while he’s working out or cleaning his house or driving his boat or sitting at a dinner table. He understands that time kills deals, and so he makes himself available pretty much around the clock.” Lots more on Kelly. (link)

Tarleton State preps to open the over $130M, 148K square-foot EECU Center this week, a move that SBJ’s Bret McCormick writes helps the school take “another big step toward college athletics legitimacy.” The overall goal for the facility is to host at least six headlining concerts each year, in addition to the usual college events such as graduations, with comedian Leanne Morgan set to serve as the first live entertainment on Sept. 7. The expectation is for the new venue’s revenue budget to hit $1.8M this academic year, a figure that could grow through the scheduling of more non-university events as well as one sitting well above the 2024-25 revenue total of just over $80K brought in by the athletic event-only, 3K-seat Wisdom Gym.
