George Mason AD Marvin Lewis inks a two-year contract extension that could keep him leading the Patriots through the 2029-30 academic year. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee met recently to continue preparations for the 2025 campaign. Changes coming out of the gathering “include enhancements to the tools that the selection committee uses to assess schedule strength and how teams perform against their schedule. The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents. An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee's analysis to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.” From a procedural standpoint, the committee also updated the recusal policy to “establish two separate distinctions: a full recusal, consistent with the previous policy; and a partial recusal, which allows selection committee members to remain in the room for the discussion of teams they are partially recused from, but continue to prevent them from voting during those rounds.” Additionally, the membership panel also reviewed the movement of idle teams from the penultimate to final ranking, reaffirming that movement in the final week should be evidence based, while the selection committee voted to “move its new member orientation session from September to October when all 13 members will convene to review the first eight weeks of the season and familiarize themselves with the computer systems they will use for the voting process beginning in November. No ranking or voting will be conducted during this meeting.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde examines the Big Sky’s approach to revenue sharing and notes that Commissioner Tom Wistrcill “and others would love to see all Big Sky members jump into the House settlement pool by 2026. From a conference office staff of 12 people to the individual athletic departments, this is a try-harder league. Part of trying harder is getting everyone on the same rev-share page and at least taking a swing at it.” Wistrcill: “It’s not a great spot from the conference office standpoint to have people doing different things. I think we all need to be in. I mean, there’s only 40 schools in DI who didn’t opt in. We have six of them. So that tells me that we need to be there and that’s the commitment that we need to have to our student-athletes and to Division I as a whole. And I think we’ll get there for next year.” One component of the new world that the Big Sky has in common with its FBS brethren is the challenge of retaining players, as Portland State Football HC Bruce Barnum explains: “I’ve had my center bought the last two years. A tailback got bought. All my good ones are getting bought. You recruit all the time. Have to. It’s just a different world and it affects us differently than the big ones. Now we’re their shopping ground. … They’re shopping at our game – at the game.” Barnum recalls a pregame episode last year when he knew an opponent was interested in one of his players. “I help [the opposing coach] out, I tell him, ‘Our kid’s not ready, let him get a little bigger before you buy him. Just get the f--- off of my sideline.’” Lots more. (link)

Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Rector John Rocovich has directed board members Ryan McCarthy and J Pearson to craft "a firm proposal" regarding future athletics funding by no later than Sept. 30, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel. Rocovich: “Centrally put, I think we all realize how important the athletics operation is to the culture of Virginia Tech, to our marketing, to our donor relationships. … Circumstances beyond our control have put us in this position, but we have to deal with it. We’re a major institution and we certainly want to preserve our reputation and participate at the highest possible level." Rocovich also noted that “we’ve treated this problem at length, but it’s right in front of us, and I think it’s certainly a major financial concern and one we really need to deal with.” President Timothy Sands also spoke during the final day of board meetings and explained: “The bottom line is that everything ties back to football and basketball success, but especially football. We are tackling this new era – I didn’t mean that pun – but we are tackling this new era head-on. … Our leadership team looks forward to working with you, the board members, to identify opportunities to enhance our competitive position in the revenue sports, which will ultimately benefit all of athletics.” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez catches up with the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte & reflects on his first year leading the Cougars. On whether he feels UH is in a better place now financially then when he took the job: “We’re way better. … We’ve been able to refine some things that have allowed us to reassess some areas, put some money in the right places. More than anything else, it allowed us to work with the university … be transparent from the start to finish. This year we got our budget for next year approved already into June. To think about that and say that’s the first time ever, that quickly we got that accomplished, it has allowed me to focus my energy. This (2025-26) will be the highest fundraising year ever when it’s all said and done, outside of a capital project. We’ve brought new people to the fold. We’ve brought new partnerships. Right now, we have 10 new corporate partners in the last six months. We’ve got another six to eight more that are on basically the 5-yard line. My goal is to try and have 20 new corporate partners this year. Donors, we’re going to keep pushing it. I want to see a new record.” (link)

New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo says UNM and New Mexico State each expect to forfeit around $500K in revenue each year to pay back damages as part of the House settlement. Lovo and Aggies Acting AD Amber Burdge both met with members of the state’s Legislative Finance Committee today with Burdge commenting: “We've had institutional support. We've invested in turf for football, the practice field, with your support, [and the] football locker room. Aggie Memorial Stadium, though, needs continued investment and upgrades. … New Mexico State still trails our Conference USA peers. There is a smaller gap than Fernando has pointed out with UNM, but we experience about a $2M gap below the average in Conference USA. … The last two years at New Mexico State, we have worked very hard to deliver a balanced budget. We've implemented a mindful oversight process. We've established weekly meetings with the university finance department, but we've gone back and raised football season ticket prices and institutional assistance in order to be able to achieve that balanced budget. … We're not projecting a balanced budget in FY26 without institutional support. It's been 10 years since we raised men's basketball season ticket prices, so we're doing our part and we raised those men's basketball season ticket prices. We also plan to make a sizable payment toward our deficit. I think that this group here needs to hear that from New Mexico State. I approach this with a great deal of gratitude because we have the $9M in state support that we can present on our revenue side.” Burdge goes on to note that “our expenses are $6M in the deficit, and we will not be able to balance that budget unless we have the institutional support, which we do have.” (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell appears on Hot Mic with Dom Izzo & discusses why the Jackrabbits opted into the House settlement: “I think once they changed the ability to grandfather the rosters, for us that was in the range of 70-75 student-athletes. So, university perspective, tuition, a lot of those student-athletes are the ones that are on low or partial or no scholarships, and so they’re paying full fare, and all of a sudden you lose 75 students on campus. That has to be planned for. Secondly, we were probably moving towards that the next March anyway, and if I can protect those kids, I’d rather do it than turn around nine months later and say, ‘oh, by the way, you don’t have a home and we’re going to these roster limits.’ [Opting in] gives us some time to work that in. The rest of it, honestly, in balance, there weren’t a lot of differences of how we have to operate and the things we have to work in, because truthfully the revenue share piece, for those schools doing $20.5M, it matters. For some of us, we have other mechanics to get some of that done. I think this is a really good place for us. It gives us some flexibility in some ways to do some things with donors and certainly raising more dollars, even just simply for Alston money, which we didn’t do a lot of in the last four years. Conference USA will implement a Collaborative Instant Replay system, as well as the introduction of player availability reports across football, men’s and women’s basketball that require “institutions to designate student-athletes as ‘Out’ (0% likelihood of participation) or ‘Questionable’ (~50% likelihood). According to Valley News’ Michael Coughlin Jr., former Dartmouth Men’s Cross Country HC/Track & Field AC Justin Wood has filed a federal lawsuit against the college “alleging that the school had ‘blacklisted’ him, damaging his ‘reputation and his ability to obtain employment.’” The suit also names former Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Porscha Dobson Harnden as a defendant. During his time on staff, Wood reportedly “raised a number of concerns about Defendant Harnden, and his belief that she was leading those programs with a glaring disregard for Ivy League and NCAA policies, along with potential admissions fraud and laxities taken with the health and safety of Dartmouth’s student-athletes.” Following a 2022 confrontation outlining his concerns, Dartmouth reportedly offered Wood a severance agreement with both parties entering into a “Separation Agreement and General Release Agreement” in August 2022, which contained a “non-disparagement” clause. Per the suit, Dartmouth has “‘taken concrete, retaliatory steps to prevent Wood from securing comparable employment,’ by removing him from the college’s 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 men’s track and field rosters, and the 2021 men’s cross country roster. This was done, the suit maintains, to ‘interfere with Wood’s application processes at other institutions,’ including Tufts University in Medford, Mass.” A Dartmouth spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit and Wood’s allegation against Harnden. Oregon State is inking a multi-year deal to have Blueprint Sports operate its in-house NIL marketing agency, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. As part of the agreement, Blueprint Sports will assume operations of the Dam Nation Collective with a team of its on-site execs overseeing fan engagement, corporate sponsorships and special events. Dam Nation Co-Founder/Executive Director Kyle Bjornstad will now serve as the athletic department’s GM, focusing on consulting with department staff and coaches on revenue sharing. (link)

The Southland Conference unveils a new multi-year agreement with CBS Sports that will see CBS Sports Network televise up to five additional league men’s basketball games annually starting in 2025-26. Commissioner Chris Grant: “Adding CBS Sports to our media rights lineup is another huge win for the Southland. This partnership amplifies our momentum, puts even more of our incredible student-athletes on national television, and shows that the Southland brand continues to surge forward. Starch Madness is staying in Boise as the Big Sky announces it has agreed to terms to keep the league’s annual Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments at Idaho Central Arena through 2031. With the extension, the Big Sky Basketball Championships are now set to call Boise home for 13 consecutive seasons after starting their run in the city back in 2019. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne Q&As with Tuscaloosa News’ Chase Goodbread. Asked whether the rev-share era will curb the rise in coaching salaries and buyouts, Byrne replied: “I think we saw more patience last year in the coaching market, which is a good thing. I don't know of an athletic department out there that isn't really working hard to find efficiency in what they do. All the way to the biggest budgets in the country, and we're one of them.” Byrne on the status of a new basketball arena: “Well, we have a new basketball practice facility coming out of the ground. Coaches are very excited about that. Teams seem to be excited, too. That's where they spend 90% of their time. Coleman Coliseum opened up in 1968 and we've got a lot of deferred maintenance on it, a lot of challenges with it. We've raised a lot of money for a new arena and it will have to be addressed at some point. I understand the fiscal responsibility to not jeopardize our entire department for one facility. So, we'll continue to move our basketball programs forward. The new practice facility will be a big part of that. Time will tell on the other one.” (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft provides detailed updates on the work on Beaver Stadium: “We installed 924 micro piles going varying depths – 50 to 80 feet to reach bedrock…3,200 tons of steel erected to 66 feet. … The footprint is massive. It is a big, big, big, big building. You can see it on paper, but until you walk it, you don’t get an appreciation for what the crew did in a very quick time. It’s going to be awesome when it’s done.” Kraft stresses that the temporary seating structure is safe and has been inspected by structural engineers. Capacity this season will be 106,304. Regarding the reported 28-team College Football Playoff idea, Kraft says: “Look, I think it's an interesting concept. I like it personally. I think it creates a lot of excitement for the regular season. … It allows you to focus on your entire schedule a little bit more. Right now, you've got to win games. So you've got to go in there and if you're going to challenge yourself, how is the committee going to look at you? And I think that's a really important piece to all this. … This is so early, but I do appreciate Tony's creativity in that space. But my perspective, I like it. Let's go play games. Let's have a tournament that we can go and compete in.” More from Kraft. (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan notes the Utes’ revenue-sharing payments are being funded by university reserves and donor contributions. The Salt Lake Tribune’s Jason Batacao says the athletic department had a $17M deficit in FY24, “which was largely related to the school’s Pac-12 exit. Utah athletics recorded a $1.8M profit in the 2023 fiscal year and a $3.8M profit in 2022.” Harlan: “We have been very blessed to build reserves here over the last years. We are now in a new era where that money is coming from multiple sources. ... But also, when you have a president like Taylor Randall, who’s a former business dean, he loves this stuff. He looks at this as like an opportunity because he’s thinking, ‘All right, well, we can package some debt here. We have debts in other parts of the university. We can figure some of this stuff out.’ We’re also looking at our costs.” The main goal for Utah, Harlan adds, is to find a balance financially over the next few years. “I’d say to break even is the goal. We’ve been building reserves and are proud of that. Now we’ve got some time to work through that. But I would say any athletic director is looking at his or her program right now, it’s going to take [us] a little bit to be back at the profitable side.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert discussed several topics on 680 The Fan, including how the Yellow Jackets can compete in the rev-share era: “You’re running a major business. I think that’s the key. We have 17 sports here at Georgia Tech, two or three that are profitable. How are we investing those resources, how are we growing our resource base, how are we analyzing the national landscape both to put Georgia Tech in a position to help our coaches be competitive and then also the Institute to put us in a position to be most competitive moving forward.” On increasing attendance among those who are neither students nor alumni: “I think it’s how you market and how you communicate. What I’ve found in my career is consumers are willing to pay even more than what they’re paying today, or they’re interested if they desire to be in a premium area, to have different access. This marketplace, we have tremendous stadiums, one thing they have is diversity of product. So they’re bringing consumers in and then they’re selecting the path they’re on. I think we have to market better, we have to be in the community, we’ve got to build a brand and then we need to build a diversity of product that brings people in.” More from Alpert. (link)

Rutgers AD Keli Zinn tells CBS New York’s Krystle Rich the “championship piece of [college sports], that's a big part of what drives me. We have some incredible people here who have spent decades at Rutgers, and they want so much to experience that at the highest level of success. And I see part of my job as owing that to them.” To do so, Zinn plans to bring in the highest caliber student-athletes, coaches and staff: "It's going after the best. I'm going after that right now. And then get them in here to perform at a really high level.” Zinn adds: "You hear a lot about that grit. You're going to see a mentality that starts at the top, where administrators believe in our success, our coaches believe that they can win here. And that will translate to our recruits, our current student-athletes, and everyone pushing in the same direction." (link)

Colorado State AD John Weber explains why he continues to view the changing landscape of college athletics as an opportunity rather than a challenge: "It's the way that everyone showed up over the last year. We built a lot of excitement since this time last year. We built a lot of excitement going into the fall, going into the winter, going into the spring. And everyone believed and everyone showed up. … But I think another reason for us to be optimistic is the way that we're coming together as a department and doing all the things off the field, off the court, out of the pool, off the track to really support our student-athletes and give them an opportunity to compete at the absolute highest level. And we're incredibly serious about it. And the opportunity that we have here for CSU, by every metric, we're a powerful institution. And the opportunity for growth for us and to make noise on the national stage is very, very real and something that we're all excited to be able to do." (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers provides more context to changes within the DI Baseball Committee: “You have the Top 16 national seeds. Those 16 national seeds will be grouped in ‘pods’ by the committee. So, to clarify, national seeds 1-2-3-4, 5-6-7-8, 9-10-11-12 and 13-14-15-16 will be in separate groups during the tournament selection process. The teams in the 17-32 range will then be ranked and seeded.” The top four national seeds will be paired with one team from seeds 29-32, the next four with seeds from 25-28, and so on. Rogers: “Why is this being done by the Selection Committee? It is following the same model as Women’s Volleyball and Soccer, and now Softball. Volleyball and Soccer have had this process for the past three seasons, and it has been a popular idea, I’m told. Softball had been adamant about adopting the same structure, which is why it was included, along with baseball.” Rogers also weighs in on the restructuring of the Baseball Committee: “One interesting aspect…is that the NCAA will have a coaches association representative on the committee. That person will not vote for championship selections. Currently, Craig Keilitz, the executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association, serves as a liaison between the coaches and the various NCAA baseball-related committees. Now, Keilitz, it is presumed, will have a seat at the table when this oversight committee meets. This should be viewed as a win for the coaches, who often feel like they have little to no representation on the committees.” (link)

South Dakota lands a $20M gift from supporter Denny Sanford that will go toward building a new, state-of-the-art indoor track and field facility. Coyotes AD Jon Schemmel: “Not only will this gift build a world class indoor track facility, but it will also create an entire new home for our track and field programs, allowing us to turn the DakotaDome into a turf-down facility. Nevada has broken ground on a new indoor fieldhouse and turf fields project, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026. The 72K-square-foot multipurpose facility will positively impact all 17 Wolf Pack sports by providing training space for football and women's soccer, batting cages for softball, and conditioning space for all Wolf Pack programs. Wisconsin football student-athlete Nyzier Fourqurean has moved once again for a preliminary injunction that will allow him to play ahead of his October 20 trial date, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes: “Should be really interesting to see how Judge Conley rules on this, given how his previous injunction was reversed on appeal.” (link)

Former Central Michigan baseball student-athlete Dean Brown has filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming that pitching coach Aaron Hilt punched him in the chest during a pregame routine before a matchup against Western Kentucky on March 2, 2025. The complaint also alleges that after Brown reported the incident to Chippewas HC Jacob Sabol and later to AD Amy Folan, he was benched and eventually suspended from the team. The lawsuit goes on to claim that CMU officials used a team Snapchat message – where Brown used the phrase “time to die,” reportedly a common team mantra – as pretext for the suspension. The suit names CMU, Hilt, Sabol, and Folan as defendants. (link)
