North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham joins Ovies & Giglio to discuss several topics, including Carolina North and basketball’s arena future: “Carolina North, we’re going to develop Carolina North. … The question about the basketball arena [being constructed at the Carolina North site] is still on the table. Do we renovate what we have? Do we build new on campus? Do we build new up there? That decision hasn’t been made yet.” As for the ACC’s new funding model: “What we’ve set up for, particularly with this coaching staff, is that we can make a lot of money in the ACC that certainly closes any gap between the SEC and the Big Ten. … The teams at the top are supporting the league and you’re like, gosh, how long do we have to subsidize people at the bottom? That’s a new direction we’re headed.” Cunningham on UNC’s future with the ACC: “The league has been good for us. The financial model is changing. Experience the new financial model, see how that works, and then give some thoughtful consideration to the future. … And if football is a big part of that, the access to the playoff has to be included in that math.” Cunningham also notes the Tar Heels “almost sell the exact same number of tickets in football and basketball. There’s very few schools that do that. … If you’re going to get into this revenue-sharing model, it seems to me you should do that within your own department. Who’s generating the money here, then you ought to get it.” More. (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith covers a lot of ground on the InsideMDSports podcast, including his plan to build fan affinity. “I think part of it is you build a fan engagement strategy, and it all sounds like marketing-speak, but it’s true. You have to be committed to building fans and engaging with them in many different avenues, and this is one of them – to be able to be out there talking about, ‘Hey, we can do this.’ There is no reason why Maryland can’t have the same affinity and the same successes as other big institutions in the Big Ten. I don’t see any reason why. [There’s] an enormous corporate base here, we’ve got 400K+ alumni here that have graduated from this school, 200K+ live in the area. What’s holding us back from engaging all those people and making them feel connected to their institution? We’re the flagship in Maryland. We need to act like the flagship of Maryland, and we need to own Maryland. Look, it’s all words until you take action. I understand that, but you’ve got to believe that you really can do it in the state, and I believe we can do it.” The Terps have no plans to cut sports, as Smith explains: "I've said this to the coaches and to the staff. We're an ‘and’ organization, not an ‘or’ organization. We're going to win in football and field hockey. We’re going to win in men’s basketball and women’s basketball. There is not going to be something at the expense of something else because the goal is to find the resources for them. And the university’s been very supportive of that approach. So, that’s why there’ll be no cuts to our Olympic sport programs.” Full podcast. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff on the timeline for Phase 2 of the Booth Memorial Stadium renovation: “Working on it. Working on it. We’re excited. We feel we’ve got a ton of wind in our sails. Based on a couple announcements last week, the city of Lawrence’s continued approval of the municipal incentives are going to be a really good spark for the project, in particular the Gateway of the East. … Mr. Booth’s remarkable, remarkable donation and the energy, the confidence that that gives us moving into Phase 2…[but] there’s still work to be done. You think about design, you think about having a schedule really refined. But the objective’s been stated. We want to demo that east side after this season and we want to get moving on construction. Of course, when things are finished and all that is still kind of in flux at this point.” (link); Meanwhile, KU shows off its $450M in renovations to Booth Memorial Stadium by flying a drone around the stands and into the attached football complex’s lounges, meeting areas, locker room, weight room and more. Take a ride for yourself. (link)

Colorado AD Rick George joins The Morning Run with BiggDogg Chico and Uncle Neely for a wide-ranging conversation about Football HC Deion Sanders’ impact, his own career path, NIL, facilities, and the future of CU athletics. George on where the Buffs stand on facilities: “we’ve got to fix the west side of our football stadium, which I hope to do in the next three to five years. And we’ve got an event center that’s getting older that we need to fix. … One promise I made to all of our student-athletes when this House settlement came up is that we’re not going to go backwards in the support services that we provide you. … We’ve got to go out and find ways and creative ways to generate more revenue to allow us to compete at the very highest level because we all know, in the next three to five to seven years, there’s going to be another change in college athletics. And my job is to make sure that we’re in a position to be in those conversations as we move forward.” Full podcast. (link)

Memphis AD Ed Scott covers several topics with The Gary Parrish Show’s eponymous host and says of being told no by the Big 12: “I’m a human being, man. I don’t like being rejected. … That hurt. You never want someone to tell you that they don’t want you.” Scott goes on to note that “when people ask me why the Big 12 doesn’t want Memphis… it can’t be the football stadium anymore. It can’t be academics – we’re R1, we set a GPA record last year, and football had the highest GPA in the American and won 11 games. So, the NCAA stuff is part of that. You didn't mention it, but we've had a history with some NCAA issues if I'm being transparent. But, I think me and my team cleaned a lot of that up pretty quickly and it ended as good as it could for issues that I didn't create or didn't happen during my watch. So, when I hear those arguments, I think they're short-sighted. If I'm being fair to the presidents and the ADs in the Big 12, they've gone through a lot of transition in a short period of time, right? There's eight teams that came into that league and everyone's hurting for cash and they're trying to figure out their identity. So, I think some of it is maybe not Memphis and some of it is them trying to figure out where they're at.” More from Scott. (link)

Wyoming AD Tom Burman was asked on the Nate Brown Show how he feels about the future of the Mountain West and replies: “I do think there will be further change. And I agree with you. When you look at South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Montana State, Montana, they're different than the rest of FCS. And for a school like Wyoming, it makes a lot of sense if there was a way that a few of those schools joined the Mountain West. But it didn't make sense for everybody in the Mountain West. And that's why there wasn't an opportunity for them to join. But in the long run, I think there will be a change. And I think there will be a division that is created where the top 40-ish schools separate. And they, in my opinion, they'll collectively bargain with student athletes. They will be employees. And those are budgets in the $250-300M range. And then the rest of us will reconfigure where we are. And I wouldn't be surprised if that allowed for the Dakotas and the Montana schools to make some decisions.” (link)

Sportico’s Brendan Coffey takes a look at how the current upheaval throughout college athletics has schools looking outside the industry for new leaders. Korn Ferry Vice Chair and Global Head of Practice Jed Hughes: “We’re talking about a disruptive ecosystem in college sports now. The landscape is changing quickly, therefore you really need an enterprise leader. Enterprise leaders are strategic, they’re operational, they deal with people, they transform businesses because they anticipate. They create, they achieve results.” According to Hughes, successful executives moving into the sports environment should have multiple varied experience types such as “working at businesses in different stages of their development, having to manage various stakeholders, and showing some sense for transformational management.” More Hughes, including this on the Stanford’s hire of John Donahoe: “One of the reasons Stanford hired Donahoe is he’s retired. He’s made his money. If you’re going after really successful people, they’re making a lot more than ADs are going to make.” With company executives often receiving equity, long-term incentive packages and stock options in the corporate world, Hughes remarks: “You’re not going to get that in college.” (link)

Big Ten football stadiums have the most expensive concessions on average, according to data from Oddspedia. Axios’ Maxwell Millington: “Nationally, the cost of hot dogs (+7.5%), sodas (+6.7%) and beer (+4.3%) have all increased since last season. … Big Ten stadiums charge an average of $14 for two hot dogs, $14 for two sodas and $24 for two beers. The national average cost for two franks and two soft drinks is $13 each, and a pair of brews is $21. At UCLA, Penn State and USC, two beers total at least $30.” Millington also highlights the cheapest options: “Coastal Carolina fans eat free this season, but the next cheapest pair of wieners ($6) can be purchased at Clemson, Georgia, UNLV and Nebraska. Georgia fans can grab two colas for $5 at Sanford Stadium. A couple of drafts are only $6 at Tulane football games. Here are the schools with the priciest concessions: A pair of hot dogs cost $24 at Kidd Brewer Stadium, home of the Appalachian State. Rutgers football fans are paying $26 for a couple of sodas. Two beers at Stanford games ring up at a whopping $40.” (link)

Sources tell AuburnSports that the YellaWood deal falls roughly in the middle.” Yellawood was founded by Auburn alumnus Jimmy Rane. (link)

West Virginia District Court Judge John Bailey has granted a temporary restraining order for four West Virginia football student-athletes – Jimmori Robinson, Jeffrey Weimer, Tye Edwards, and Justin Harrington – to compete this year and enjoined the NCAA from enforcing its five-year rule as the quartet previously competed in the NJCAA. Bailey writing in his decision: “Every lawyer's favorite phrase applies to the case law on this issue: ‘It depends.’ With today's decision, the case law on this issue now reflects a 8-4 split as to whether participation at a junior college begins a student-athlete's eligibility clock. ‘District courts can and often do reach opposite conclusions when confronted with similar issues, and appellate courts exist to resolve those disagreements.’ Out of the nineteen (19) cases listed above, only one (1) has made its way to a United States Court of Appeals. Until this Court receives guidance from the Supreme Court of the United States or the Fourth Circuit, it remains steadfast in its view that, in the post-NIL and post-Alston landscape, the Challenged Rules are so closely intertwined with commercial regulations and benefits that they are, in effect, commercial in nature and thus subject to the Sherman Act.” (link, link)

President Gregory Washington: “During his two years here, Marvin has led our athletics department to new heights in a rapidly evolving landscape in intercollegiate athletics and has developed a clear vision for our future. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee met recently to continue preparations for the 2025 campaign. Changes coming out of the gathering “include enhancements to the tools that the selection committee uses to assess schedule strength and how teams perform against their schedule. The current schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents. An additional metric, record strength, has been added to the selection committee's analysis to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team. Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.” From a procedural standpoint, the committee also updated the recusal policy to “establish two separate distinctions: a full recusal, consistent with the previous policy; and a partial recusal, which allows selection committee members to remain in the room for the discussion of teams they are partially recused from, but continue to prevent them from voting during those rounds.” Additionally, the membership panel also reviewed the movement of idle teams from the penultimate to final ranking, reaffirming that movement in the final week should be evidence based, while the selection committee voted to “move its new member orientation session from September to October when all 13 members will convene to review the first eight weeks of the season and familiarize themselves with the computer systems they will use for the voting process beginning in November. No ranking or voting will be conducted during this meeting.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde examines the Big Sky’s approach to revenue sharing and notes that Commissioner Tom Wistrcill “and others would love to see all Big Sky members jump into the House settlement pool by 2026. From a conference office staff of 12 people to the individual athletic departments, this is a try-harder league. Part of trying harder is getting everyone on the same rev-share page and at least taking a swing at it.” Wistrcill: “It’s not a great spot from the conference office standpoint to have people doing different things. I think we all need to be in. I mean, there’s only 40 schools in DI who didn’t opt in. We have six of them. So that tells me that we need to be there and that’s the commitment that we need to have to our student-athletes and to Division I as a whole. And I think we’ll get there for next year.” One component of the new world that the Big Sky has in common with its FBS brethren is the challenge of retaining players, as Portland State Football HC Bruce Barnum explains: “I’ve had my center bought the last two years. A tailback got bought. All my good ones are getting bought. You recruit all the time. Have to. It’s just a different world and it affects us differently than the big ones. Now we’re their shopping ground. … They’re shopping at our game – at the game.” Barnum recalls a pregame episode last year when he knew an opponent was interested in one of his players. “I help [the opposing coach] out, I tell him, ‘Our kid’s not ready, let him get a little bigger before you buy him. Just get the f--- off of my sideline.’” Lots more. (link)

Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Rector John Rocovich has directed board members Ryan McCarthy and J Pearson to craft "a firm proposal" regarding future athletics funding by no later than Sept. 30, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel. Rocovich: “Centrally put, I think we all realize how important the athletics operation is to the culture of Virginia Tech, to our marketing, to our donor relationships. … Circumstances beyond our control have put us in this position, but we have to deal with it. We’re a major institution and we certainly want to preserve our reputation and participate at the highest possible level." Rocovich also noted that “we’ve treated this problem at length, but it’s right in front of us, and I think it’s certainly a major financial concern and one we really need to deal with.” President Timothy Sands also spoke during the final day of board meetings and explained: “The bottom line is that everything ties back to football and basketball success, but especially football. We are tackling this new era – I didn’t mean that pun – but we are tackling this new era head-on. … Our leadership team looks forward to working with you, the board members, to identify opportunities to enhance our competitive position in the revenue sports, which will ultimately benefit all of athletics.” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez catches up with the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte & reflects on his first year leading the Cougars. On whether he feels UH is in a better place now financially then when he took the job: “We’re way better. … We’ve been able to refine some things that have allowed us to reassess some areas, put some money in the right places. More than anything else, it allowed us to work with the university … be transparent from the start to finish. This year we got our budget for next year approved already into June. To think about that and say that’s the first time ever, that quickly we got that accomplished, it has allowed me to focus my energy. This (2025-26) will be the highest fundraising year ever when it’s all said and done, outside of a capital project. We’ve brought new people to the fold. We’ve brought new partnerships. Right now, we have 10 new corporate partners in the last six months. We’ve got another six to eight more that are on basically the 5-yard line. My goal is to try and have 20 new corporate partners this year. Donors, we’re going to keep pushing it. I want to see a new record.” (link)

New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo says UNM and New Mexico State each expect to forfeit around $500K in revenue each year to pay back damages as part of the House settlement. Lovo and Aggies Acting AD Amber Burdge both met with members of the state’s Legislative Finance Committee today with Burdge commenting: “We've had institutional support. We've invested in turf for football, the practice field, with your support, [and the] football locker room. Aggie Memorial Stadium, though, needs continued investment and upgrades. … New Mexico State still trails our Conference USA peers. There is a smaller gap than Fernando has pointed out with UNM, but we experience about a $2M gap below the average in Conference USA. … The last two years at New Mexico State, we have worked very hard to deliver a balanced budget. We've implemented a mindful oversight process. We've established weekly meetings with the university finance department, but we've gone back and raised football season ticket prices and institutional assistance in order to be able to achieve that balanced budget. … We're not projecting a balanced budget in FY26 without institutional support. It's been 10 years since we raised men's basketball season ticket prices, so we're doing our part and we raised those men's basketball season ticket prices. We also plan to make a sizable payment toward our deficit. I think that this group here needs to hear that from New Mexico State. I approach this with a great deal of gratitude because we have the $9M in state support that we can present on our revenue side.” Burdge goes on to note that “our expenses are $6M in the deficit, and we will not be able to balance that budget unless we have the institutional support, which we do have.” (link)

South Dakota State AD Justin Sell appears on Hot Mic with Dom Izzo & discusses why the Jackrabbits opted into the House settlement: “I think once they changed the ability to grandfather the rosters, for us that was in the range of 70-75 student-athletes. So, university perspective, tuition, a lot of those student-athletes are the ones that are on low or partial or no scholarships, and so they’re paying full fare, and all of a sudden you lose 75 students on campus. That has to be planned for. Secondly, we were probably moving towards that the next March anyway, and if I can protect those kids, I’d rather do it than turn around nine months later and say, ‘oh, by the way, you don’t have a home and we’re going to these roster limits.’ [Opting in] gives us some time to work that in. The rest of it, honestly, in balance, there weren’t a lot of differences of how we have to operate and the things we have to work in, because truthfully the revenue share piece, for those schools doing $20.5M, it matters. For some of us, we have other mechanics to get some of that done. I think this is a really good place for us. It gives us some flexibility in some ways to do some things with donors and certainly raising more dollars, even just simply for Alston money, which we didn’t do a lot of in the last four years. Some of those categories, it makes it easier.” More from Sell. (link)

Conference USA will implement a Collaborative Instant Replay system, as well as the introduction of player availability reports across football, men’s and women’s basketball that require “institutions to designate student-athletes as ‘Out’ (0% likelihood of participation) or ‘Questionable’ (~50% likelihood). Any player not listed will be presumed available.” (link)

According to Valley News’ Michael Coughlin Jr., former Dartmouth Men’s Cross Country HC/Track & Field AC Justin Wood has filed a federal lawsuit against the college “alleging that the school had ‘blacklisted’ him, damaging his ‘reputation and his ability to obtain employment.’” The suit also names former Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Porscha Dobson Harnden as a defendant. During his time on staff, Wood reportedly “raised a number of concerns about Defendant Harnden, and his belief that she was leading those programs with a glaring disregard for Ivy League and NCAA policies, along with potential admissions fraud and laxities taken with the health and safety of Dartmouth’s student-athletes.” Following a 2022 confrontation outlining his concerns, Dartmouth reportedly offered Wood a severance agreement with both parties entering into a “Separation Agreement and General Release Agreement” in August 2022, which contained a “non-disparagement” clause. Per the suit, Dartmouth has “‘taken concrete, retaliatory steps to prevent Wood from securing comparable employment,’ by removing him from the college’s 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 men’s track and field rosters, and the 2021 men’s cross country roster. This was done, the suit maintains, to ‘interfere with Wood’s application processes at other institutions,’ including Tufts University in Medford, Mass.” A Dartmouth spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit and Wood’s allegation against Harnden.
