Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, On3’s Pete Nakos and Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich offer updates from the College Sports Commission. Overall, “between June 11 and Aug. 20, more than 5.1K NIL deals have been cleared. Deals range from $600 to $1.5M,” while “23.2K student-athletes are registered on NIL Go.” Dellenger adds that the “CSC plans to release data from NIL Go (deals denied, those in arbitration, etc) each month, starting in September. High school athletes are required to submit deals that they received as juniors/seniors once they enroll in college (deals will be evaluated then).” He also clarifies that the high school athlete requirement “hasn't been formally approved yet. It is under consideration to be adopted.” Dellenger continues on to mention that MMR companies have been “deemed associated entities” with the CSC “further examining the determination of apparel companies as associated entities.” Christovich highlights this interesting nugget: “NIL Go, the software created by Deloitte to scrutinize whether NIL deals are ‘pay-for-play’ is being operated manually. That means that human beings are looking through every single deal and clearing it or rejecting it, rather than AI. Deloitte, which built NIL Go, gathered data to do a range of compensation analysis. The CSC is now working with Deloitte to continue that process.” (link, link, link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez talks to PokesNews.com’s Jeff Bugher about a number of topics. On expansion, Nevarez notes that while there are strong programs out there to consider, “the hurdles are significant” to make new additions, and for now, the league is holding steady. Nevarez: “There are a lot of amazing FCS programs that we would ordinarily be very interested in. There's a two-year waiting period, there's a $5M fee that needs to be paid, and we just strategically at this time didn't want to take the risk that those bylaws might change, might get more stringent, or the pathway to FBS might close before those schools had an opportunity to join us. So we did not consider FCS this time around—not for lack of potentially great schools. … Never say never. We're just on pause for now. We're going to get through a media rights [negotiation], but we are constantly looking at membership.” Discussing a new TV and media rights deal, Nevarez asserts that she doesn’t expect a big shake-up moving forward: “I think you're going to see relatively similar value in deals. Boise State is certainly a value proposition. They were actually called out by name in our original media contracts because of what they built and their media value. But we anticipate re-signing all of our legacy partners as well as adding some new ones.” (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh weighs in on the state of the Badgers football program and says: “I think [HC Luke Fickell] and his staff have done a really good job in a really challenging time, since the conclusion of last season, to both adapt and assemble a team that I think is going to be really exciting this year. I give him credit for the willingness to make some changes.” Despite the expansion of the Big Ten, McIntosh insists that “our expectations are to strive for championships. And that's something that I was born into as a player here. That's something that, for decades now, has been part of who we are. … The expectation is the expectation. Having said that, there are, not even specific to last year's team or the last two years, developments that happen during the season that have an effect on your team. And it's no secret that the number of games that we played without our starting quarterback didn't make it any easier for us.” On what he sees in this year’s team specifically: “I think a requirement for Wisconsin football and [for] the level at which we want to play and the expectations that we have, the No. 1 requirement is physicality up front. I've been really encouraged. … Maybe that's just my own bias, given my own experience, but I do believe that that is [important]. If you look at our history as a program, you look at our best teams, our best teams are really strong on both sides of the ball up front.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy provides details on South Carolina’s new deal with Nike. As part of the agreement, the Gamecocks will receive $5M over a 10-year term for an average annual value of $500K, there’s a royalty rate of 15% of net sales, a retail product allotment of $70M over the term ($7M average annual value) and a supplemental product allotment of $2.5M to be allocated at USC’s discretion. Additionally, former Gamecock and WNBA standout A’ja Wilson’s “gear will be integrated into Gamecocks basketball” through the providing of signature sneakers and the exploration of travel and other team gear over the term with a cash alternative of $15M if not provided by July 15, 2027. Nike will also provide USC football with a bespoke alt uniform as part of an energy program that includes more than 15 elite college football programs and supply Vapor Elite, Alpha Menace and Force Savage cleat silos for the 2026-27 campaign. Among the numerous performance bonuses available through the apparel deal are $100K for a football national title, $50K for a men’s or women’s basketball crown and $25K for a MCWS or WCWS championship. More. (link)

More from Arizona State AD Graham Rossini, this time regarding indoor facility plans for the Sun Devils: "It's too early [for a timeline], but as soon as possible. We're studying the site, defining the scope. We have been talking to architects and our partners at ASU who get involved with capital projects, so we want to start fundraising. In the next 30 days or so, we'll have the scope more clarified, and then it's just a matter of how soon can we get funded to a threshold that allows us to start the project." (link)

Kansas and Legends produced $187M of capital commitments from new premium seating sales at the newly-renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who reports that total easily topped original projections of $127M from a different consultancy early on in the project. Prior to the renovation, the stadium had 40 suites with a capacity of approximately 650, but that’s now increased to approximately 3K sold-out premium seats. Deputy AD for External Affairs & Revenue Generation Jason Booker: “I think there were times when people thought we were overbuilding premium. … And when you start to look at the premium trends across the country, we probably didn’t build enough.” Per McCormick, “each seat purchase began with a capital gift that went into the renovation project fund and then unlocked the opportunity for buyers to purchase tickets in different levels. Each seat included an annual donation level and annual ticket cost.” (link)

On3’s Keenan Cummings reports that West Virginia has added over 9.5K in new football season-ticket holders with overall sales totals rising from 28K in 2024 to a current mark of 33,208 on the way to an expected finish between 33.5-34K. In addition to season ticket growth, Cummings also notes that “Mountaineer Athletic Donations have continued to climb as well both in terms of the number of donors and the amount of gifts.” (link)

LSU Football HC Brian Kelly points out the stark differences that still exist between college football and the NFL, noting: “Look, the NFL is $280M a year in salary cap. We’re going to be just about $18M. There’s a big difference between $280M and $18M. So if you can’t see the difference between the two, then you’re not really understanding that what you want to develop your son to be is the best version of himself so he can get the big money in three years. It’s starting to resonate back to that. Be competitive with other offers that they may get, but at the end of the day, it’s still about showing them that if you come to LSU, we’re going to develop you in all facets. So when you leave here, not only are you a better player, you’re a better man, you’re a better person and you can go into an NFL locker room. … The NFL knows that. They know that if they go through our program here, not only are they really good players, but they’re prepared for that next step. And that next step is really important because they’re going to pay them a lot more money than we were paying them.” (link)

Many around the media world are questioning UCLA Football’s media policies after Bruins HC DeShaun Foster was asked if he could “explain kind of the more restrictive media policies put in place recently, with no players today, no interviews, no feature interviews, less viewing.” Foster replied: "Yeah, you guys film our practice and put it online. If I was an opponent for another team, I'd look right at your guys' stuff and see what's going on. So for them not to get a beat on Tino or depth or anything that's going on, that's why it's closed." Asked to clarify why that pertains to player interviews, Foster responded: “That's the same thing. Because if they come over and interview, then you guys are gonna ask me, 'Are they a starter? Are they this? Are they that?’" Does Foster worry about the marketing impact for the program at all? "No, I'll let you guys handle all of that. And I'm not worried about the marketing. Because what marketing does, if you win games, you're marketed. So we're going to go out there and focus on winning games. That's why we left for training camp. But if I was just trying to just let everything be open, we could have just stayed right here and did that. We're going to work and go away and come back and everything's going to be fine." (link)

The SEC will move to a nine-game conference football schedule in 2026, and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey explains in a statement: “Adding a ninth SEC game underscores our universities’ commitment to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the nation. This format protects rivalries, increases competitive balance, and paired with our requirement to play an additional Power opponent, ensures SEC teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in the College Football Playoff.” The Athletic’s Seth Emerson notes that “for now, the SEC will maintain its mandate that each school also play one other power-conference opponent in a non-conference game. The conference said Thursday in a statement it ‘will continue to evaluate its policies to ensure the continued scheduling of high-quality non-conference opponents.’” Sankey also remarked on The Paul Finebaum Show that “what I described the last two days to the athletic directors is the [College Football Playoff’s] made progress. We’re not at perfection. The full clarity on how strength of schedule will be honored will be important to us. We’re at an eight-game schedule this year. We’ll have a second opportunity to see how selection decisions are made.” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello adds key reporting from sources to the SEC’s move to a nine-game conference football schedule next season: “ADs have been concerned with fan backlash over rising ticket prices and lack of quality games, so adding 9th game helped push this vote. [...] Each SEC team will receive additional money: an average of about $5 million each year from ESPN. Very possible that the $ jumps in the future.” (link)

In assessing how Notre Dame has evolved with changes in the industry, The Athletic’s Pete Sampson observes that the Fighting Irish “were slow in adopting pathways for players to enroll a semester early because the administration was concerned about the practice’s impact on freshman orientation. Now the school is comfortable changing its academic calendar to accommodate the College Football Playoff.” Former AD Jack Swarbrick: “Wherever the bar moved to, we were gonna move. You advocate for the position you’d like to see occur, but in the background you’re always saying we’re not gonna let Notre Dame football fail.” In order to ensure the football program can be consistently in the College Football Playoff hunt, Sampson notes the Fighting Irish’s plans start with the “holy trinity of football buildings: a renovated stadium, an indoor practice facility and a new operations center. Two of those projects are done, and the third could be by the time Notre Dame opens Freeman’s fifth season as head coach at Lambeau Field against Wisconsin in 2026. They are all part of the reason Notre Dame believes it can now produce College Football Playoff runs in perpetuity. According to The Athletic’s CFP projections, the Irish have the fourth-best odds to make the 2025-26 Playoff at 73%, higher than preseason No. 1 Texas. It might seem like Notre Dame has everything to hold its reservation at college football’s adult table for the long run – acknowledging that every coach wants more NIL funding.” More. (link)

CollegeAD has the details on Toledo AD Bryan Blair’s extended contract, which is set to run through June 30, 2030, and increases his base salary to $365K. Blair can earn bonuses up to no more than 30% of his salary. Athletic-related performance incentives range from $2K to $50K, and academic-related bonuses range from $2,500 to $5K. Additionally, Blair can earn bonuses based on fundraising that range from $1K to $15K. In the event that Toledo terminates the contract without cause, the Rockets will owe Blair severance pay equal to 1.5 years of annual salary. Should Blair terminate the contract and accept a job with a Power 4 or equivalent school, he will owe Toledo $50K in liquidated damages. (link)

Crain’s Grand Rapids’ Joe Scalzo takes a look at how mid-majors are adapting to survive in the revenue-sharing era, and Kent State AD Randale Richmond notes: “We’re further away from being close to a Power 4 than we’ve ever been, but the gap has always been astronomical. Being associated (with the highest level) is still important. We’re still in the same video game with all the Power Fours of anybody else. It’s still the best value proposition.” Despite the challenges, Cleveland State AD Kelsie Gory Harkey explains the Vikings never considered moving down to DII or DIII: “That wasn’t a question we debated. Being a Division I school gets your brand out there in ways that it might not in a Division II or III setting. Those are opportunities that an institution cannot buy.” Akron AD Andrew Goodrich, meanwhile, argues that “we are in a better financial situation than Power 4 programs because the delta between where we are in our [budgetary goals] is smaller than the Power 4 teams’ delta. I feel very confident about that, having worked a number of years in the ACC. I talk to my friends in the ACC. I know what their budgets are. I know where they want to be. The delta is way, way bigger.” Oakland AD Steve Waterfield adds: “In the upcoming years, you’re going to maybe see opportunities that don’t exist now because institutions at that Power 4 level are going to have to make decisions regarding how they are going to allocate resources. That creates opportunities for us, whether that’s in swimming and diving or golf or whatever.” More. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports that both the Atlantic Sun and United Athletic Conference are pursuing expansion, with the ASUN down to seven members and the UAC at eight. According to Brown, three DII institutions – West Florida, Lincoln Memorial and Nova Southeastern – “have been in talks with ASUN officials, even going so far as to sign letters of interest.” Brown stresses that “a letter of interest is not an official conference invitation,” but filing before the NCAA’s August 5 moratorium allows those schools to remain eligible to reclassify. Brown highlights Nova Southeastern as “probably the best institutional fit for the ASUN,” given its geography, sport sponsorship and athletic investments, while West Florida would play football in the UAC since the ASUN doesn’t sponsor the sport. Brown also notes that “when the ASUN/UAC news first broke, my phone was blowing up with ADs and consultant-types telling me to watch for the UAC to target schools in the Southland. My current understanding is any momentum in that direction has cooled. I am hearing the most chatter from industry-types about UT Martin, currently a member of the OVC. I don’t have anything confirmed by people with direct knowledge to be confident about timelines, but enough people I trust are texting me about this, I believe there’s some smoke to that potential fire.” More from Brown. Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton sits down to discuss the landscape of FCS, including his first year as FCS Football Committee Chair. On how adding the Ivy League to the playoffs, and therefore now having one less at-large playoff berth, changes the committee’s conversation: “I think it’s going to be interesting because it’s new that we’re going to have the Ivy, and you know, they play 10 games. How do you look at that? Is the Ivy going to change and move to 11 games in the future? Obviously, they’ve got schedules full, but right now, you can argue the Ivy’s a one-bid league. You know, with some of these metrics, a lot of the Ivy’s are up there. I can’t figure any of that out, but you would see it just take one spot. Then with the seeding process, it’d be hard to say they have the strength of schedule to get a seed. You don’t know until you’re in the room, but it would just be one less at large that is taken away from another deep conference.” (link)

Dallas Baptist AD Matt Duce describes the baseball program’s upcoming move to the Pac-12 as “one of the most significant moments in our university’s history,” noting strong enthusiasm from alumni, recruits, and parents. Duce explains the shift came together quickly, which is reflective of how “the landscape changes under our feet day by day.” Asked if the move would make the road to Omaha tougher, Duce acknowledges the challenges of playing programs like Oregon State and Fresno State but added: “If we didn’t think we can compete, we wouldn’t have made the move.” Duce also emphasizes recruiting benefits, especially new West Coast access, that will “elevate the profile of DBU baseball to a more national audience.” Duce notes of NIL and the House settlement that the Patriots have opted in, and “by doing that we’ve raised our hand and said, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna play by these new rules.’” (link)

The Delaware Business Times’ Katie Tabeling takes a look at Delaware State’s plan to invest in its athletic department, including an eventual $125M in facilities upgrades, and Hornets AD Tony Tucker remarks: “I’ve always looked at DSU, if I want to use the old cliche, as a hidden gem. It has great opportunities in front of it. My first question was how can we realize our potential. It just starts in the little things and then builds up to bigger things.” Tucker also discusses his approach to hiring longtime NFL standout DeSean Jackson as the new football coach: “I didn’t think it would really go anywhere at first. But we talked a number of times, and I was totally surprised at how mature and football savvy he was as a coach. I knew him as a player, but I didn’t know he had such a knowledge [of the game]. It checked off a lot of boxes on my list: he had the personality, the knowledge and he’d bring a lot of attention and external resources to the university.” They’re getting that attention, as Tucker notes that “we’re set to have ESPN’s First Take with Stephen A. Smith to do a live show on campus. That’s something that wouldn’t have happened in the past. We’re not looking to be just great within the MEAC. We’re looking to be great nationally, and we have big aspirations. We got the right pieces in place, and now we have to go out and execute it.” (link)

CSA Search and Consulting President Drew Turner joins College.town's Kristen Eargle to highlight the Chief of Staff opening on the CSA team. Turner recaps the year's highlights, including the addition of CSA Academics and the new rebrand before sharing the vision for this newly created position. Turner explains that until now the Chief of Staff role has been something added onto another team member’s responsibilities, but “as we’ve grown and as the amount of projects that we’ve led have increased, we felt like it wasn’t something that someone else could just do on the side as an addition to their responsibilities. … We need somebody to really focus on organizational efficiency, how to optimize our operations, how to improve internal communication, how to keep us accountable to the organization’s strategic plan, and all of that is a full-time job.” Turner adds that “when we look to this new position, we want somebody who comes in who’s an expert at internal operations, who knows how to really come in and implement some best practices.” Find out more in the full conversation.
