In a letter sent to NCAA President Charlie Baker, 10 Democratic members of the House of Representatives ask how the NCAA plans to protect the interests of female athletes as the largest portion of NIL and revenue-sharing payments continue to be directed to male athletes. Specifically, the letter asks: Will the NCAA encourage schools to allocate direct payments to male and female athletes equitably? Will the NCAA refocus its own investments in women’s sports to counteract this disparity? What will the NCAA do to educate athletes – particularly women athletes – about the details of the settlement and the opportunities associated with it, along with the rights they may give up when signing contracts with their schools? The letter also observes: “The NCAA has indicated that the elimination of scholarship limits and the implementation of roster caps will introduce more scholarship opportunities to women athletes. By how much does the NCAA expect these changes to increase overall funding for women’s sports at DI schools?” The lawmakers have requested answers by August 30. (link, link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown provides more context on Lincoln Memorial, Nova Southeastern and West Florida’s letters of interest to join the ASUN (DI). “I’ve confirmed with the NCAA that Division I membership voted to approve a moratorium on D-I reclassifications until at least February 2027, unless a reclassifying school ‘received a written invitation or letter of interest from a conference or submitted a written letter of interest to join a conference before August 5, 2025’ Multiple industry sources have stressed to me that a letter of interest is not an official conference invitation. Those three institutions have not been formally invited to the ASUN as of this morning. As best as I understand it, the paperwork filed simply demonstrates that the three schools were already in the process of discussing a conference invite before the moratorium was passed.” (link)

NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley has released a statement in response to Robinhood offering college football prediction markets: "Sport integrity is paramount for the NCAA, and we are deeply concerned by unregulated and unprotected markets that pose a threat to competition integrity and student-athlete safety. We will continue to analyze developments of this market and work with industry leaders to help ensure guardrails and regulations to protect NCAA competition, student-athletes, coaches and officials." The DII Committee on Infractions has found that 29 Fort Lewis practiced or competed while not certified, did not meet the transferable hours requirement or received athletic scholarships before being certified as eligible. As a result, FLC has vacated records across 10 sports in which ineligible student-athletes competed, will pay a total fine of $2,500, and serve two years of probation. Further, former Asst. AD for Internal Operations Kali Barber, who is currently the Compliance Manager/SWA at Seattle Pacific, has been issued a two-year show-cause order due to a violation of ethical conduct rules and a responsibility to cooperate by providing misleading information to the COI. Dallas Baptist’s DI Baseball program will move from Conference USA to the Pac-12, starting in 2026-27. AD Matt Duce describes the move as “one of the most significant moments in our university’s history,” noting strong enthusiasm from alumni, recruits, and parents. Duce explains the shift came together quickly, which is reflective of how “the landscape changes under our feet day by day.” Duce also emphasizes recruiting benefits, especially new West Coast access, that will “elevate the profile of DBU baseball to a more national audience.” Duce notes of NIL and the House settlement that the Patriots have opted in, and “by doing that we’ve raised our hand and said, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna play by these new rules.’” (link)

BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi to discuss how administrators should handle presidential transitions on their respective campuses. Abbott’s key point for leaders: “If you wait until you know your president is leaving to try to position yourself, then in my opinion, you’re too late.” Communicating the value of athletics both internally and externally is clearly a main pillar for a successful transition, but Abbott notes administrators should be active across the entire campus, adding: “ADs and athletic administrators in general have to be active participants and have to embrace the idea that you are the visible sort of leader and mouthpiece for the athletic department, and it's just as important and maybe more important to do that internally as it is externally. […] What you can never forget is the biggest donor to the athletic department is the university. So you better spend just as much or more time cultivating those relationships, sharing your vision, and contributing to the mission internally as you do externally.” Looking back on his four different presidents as the AD at Oklahoma City (NAIA), Abbott recalls it took time to determine if the new leader was for or against him, noting of the former president who was not for him initially: “He had to come to that position on his own, but the sum of our culture and the work that we were doing helped lead him in that direction.” Tons more insights. U.S. News in conjunction with PureSpectrum conducted a nationwide survey of Americans who've placed a sports bet in the last six months and found the following: One-quarter of sports bettors say they've been unable to pay a bill because of wagers they made. Some respondents say they bet their rent money on sporting events; almost a third (30%) of sports bettors say they have debts they attribute to gambling. Of those with debts related to sports betting, more than half (51%) are facing debts of $500 or more. Over 15% of sports bettors say they've taken out a personal loan to fund their wagers. And 12% of respondents say they've taken out high-interest payday loans to bankroll their bets. More than half (52%) of sports bettors say they carry a credit card balance from month to month. About 45% say they haven't saved up enough emergency funds to cover three to six months of living expenses, the amount many financial experts recommend. One-quarter of sports bettors worry that they can't control their gambling; about 9% of respondents say they've sought treatment for a gambling addiction. 21% of sports bettors say they've verbally abused an athlete, either in person or online, after losing money on a bet. And more than a quarter of respondents between the ages of 35 and 44 say they've lashed out at an athlete over a wager, the highest rate of any age group in the survey. Full report. (link)
