The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman explores how today’s “Farmageddon” match-up between Kansas State and Iowa State managed to go international as this year’s Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin. According to Dochterman, the idea was one that blossomed in 2022 with Aer Lingus staff first approaching Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard about moving a 2025 Big 12 game. Pollard: “For us to be the home game, it just didn’t work. But we wanted to be part of it, and so we offered to be part of it as the visitor. We just had to find the right team to give up a home game.” Enter Kansas State. Game organizer & On Location EVP for College John Anthony met with Wildcats AD Gene Taylor at a convention in 2022 where he broached the topic, for the second time. Taylor: ”I’m like, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘Would you think the Big 12 would move it?’ I said, ‘There’s no way [Kansas State Football HC Chris] Klieman is moving the Iowa State game to a neutral site in Ireland.’ And he said, ‘Would you just ask?’” Anthony followed up by traveling with his staff to Manhattan for a presentation to go over details, while Klieman reached out to peers at Northwestern and Nebraska who’d played in the contest in 2022. One of the coaches who’d participated called it “the greatest experience their kids have ever had.” From there, Klieman was in. Taylor: ”Chris came down to my office, and said, ‘Let’s do it,’ I was shocked, literally, because of the importance of the game. It’s a conference game. It’s the first game of the year. I didn’t think he’d do it.” (link)

Indiana AD Scott Dolson on how the Hoosiers will use the new monies generated from the Merchants Bank football field naming rights deal ($50M over 20 years): “Staffing is really 1A. Maintaining staff, coaches across the board is really, really important to us. And then third would be facilities right behind those two. So those priorities to me are critical in all of our strategic decisions as it comes to allocating resources. So with this type of a commitment, a long-term sponsorship opportunity like this, we’ll evaluate the use of those in the best way that we can prioritize those three areas for us to move forward and hopefully reach the heights that we want to with our program.” Dolson also commented on potential renovations to Memorial Stadium: “The bigger potential renovation, we’re still in the master planning phase in what the end result will be. And I know you heard me say this, because you probably will, you keep saying this, when will that be done? I think we didn’t stall it, but part of it with the changes in college athletics with the new revenue share and the $20.5M new expense line item we have this year, we’re still trying to really dial in, what should the future of the stadium overall look like? And should that be something that we piecemeal together year after year or something we take on one big project? So today’s commitment in the partnership with Merchants Bank, I think really helps in both areas. And the bottom line for me is making certain that we’re allocating our resources in the best way that we can get the program where it needs to be. And where Coach Cig and I both feel we get the biggest return on those investments.” (link)

CollegeAD unpacks the particulars of incoming North Carolina AD Steve Newmark’s deal with the Tar Heels: While Newmark waits to officially take over as AD on July 1, 2026, he’s set to earn $600K as Executive Associate AD. When Newmark does officially become AD, his annual salary will jump to $1M, as part of his contract that runs through August 14, 2030. CollegeAD also notes Newmark and UNC will review his salary annually. “In addition to his annual pay, Newmark can earn a bonus equal to 1/12 of his base pay anytime North Carolina's football program plays in a bowl or the College Football Playoff. The same 1/12 bonus can be earned for both the men's or women's basketball teams earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Once Newmark takes over for Bubba Cunningham, he can earn bonuses equal to 3/24 of his annual salary for a department APR score of 975 or better or a GSR of 82% or better.” In addition to those standard bonuses, Newmark can earn more cash for additional athletic achievements ranging from $35K to $100K. He is also slated to earn four retention payments of $50K in 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029. Another pair of retention bonuses are due on March 31 and June 30, 2030. If UNC were to part ways with Newmark without cause, he'd be owed a buyout equal to the lesser of the number of whole months remaining to August 14, 2030, or 24 months. (link)

Extra, Extra! With so many developments making immediate impacts on the industry this week, the College.town newsroom, located at the corner of Sankey St. and Dellenger Dr., had to hold back on publishing a myriad of updates in the media rights environment. As such, we’re donning our turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th) newsboy caps for this edition of D1.extra because keeping a finger on the pulse of the media rights environment has never been more important in college sports than it is today. From ESPN’s DTC launch to the latest on MLB’s new media partners and everything in between, here are the latest goings-on. Read all about it! (link)

Illinois State AD Jeri Beggs says the Redbirds raised $6M+ in the past year, the second-highest total in program history. That included 40 gifts of $25K or more. Beggs also says season ticket sales are up across all four ticketed sports - football, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball - for a second straight year. (link)

College of Charleston AD Matt Roberts sits down with College.town’s Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle to discuss a number of topics from breaking into the industry to aligning himself with great leaders and how adaptability is the skill set that now proves more vital than ever before. Roberts: “I think adaptability is huge. That’s obvious with what’s going on with the House settlement. It’s the old Matthew McConaughey line. ‘We keep getting older, but our student athletes stay the same age.’ Our world that we live in, and how we see things, is not the same as the young people that we're here to serve. So, we have to adapt to their world, and whether that’s how we communicate or the resources that we deploy for them on their behalf. That changes. If we don't have coaches and staff and ourselves as leaders of a department that are adapting to the world around us, it's going to be hard to have success, or at least continued success.” More from Roberts. “Why does (Northwestern President) Michael Schill still have a job?” That’s the question The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna ponders fresh off the university’s lawsuit settlement with former Football HC Pat Fitzgerald. Citing Schill’s original statement after firing Fitzgerald back in 2023, Fortuna notes Schill called the decision to originally suspend the coach “mine and mine alone,” and continues on to insist that’s “far from the only head-scratching decision that has cost Northwestern — a top-10 national university, per World and News Report — serious dollars at a crucial time for schools financially.” Highlighting a recent announcement that the school was trimming 435 jobs in response to a $790M federal funding freeze as well as referencing an on-going Dept. of Education investigation for “widespread antisemitic harassment,” settlements with former players over hazing-related lawsuits and the “odd decision” to move former AD Derrick Gragg to a new role as VP for Athletic Strategy, Fortuna opines that “Northwestern is paying the literal price right now. The Wildcats lost their coach, they ended up losing their AD and they have lost more money than they can probably count. The only thing they haven’t lost is their president.” (link)

New South Carolina Deputy AD/CMO Wesley Mallette now has an official contract, approved by the Board of Trustees yesterday. The deal runs through 2027 and will pay him $300K in year one and $310K in year two. It also includes a one-time $15K payment, “similar to a signing bonus.” (link)

Baylor Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Vision & Innovation Kevin Goll reflects on the passing of his father & the role sports played in forging a deep bond. Terrific read as the pigskin finally kicks today. Goll: “In a world of increasing isolation and digitization, it gets us together live and in person. It provides an opportunity to witness greatness with those who we care about the most. My friend, Paul Putz, who leads Baylor's Faith & Sports Institute, often says that while never an ultimate thing, sports should be received as a good gift from a perfect Giver. This is absolutely true, and within the goodness of the gift of sports is how it can bless and impact not only the participants but also the viewers. The relationship I enjoyed with Dad owes a lot of quality time to this truth. I have a great many thoughts and emotions processing Dad's passing, as is natural for a son to have when the lifelong rock of the family graduates to the better side of eternity. One constant has been the feeling of gratitude for the memories and experiences we had together. In hindsight, I do not regret any of the effort I put forth into making those moments happen, and I know he didn't either.” (link)

D1Baseball’s Bradley Smart dug into the turnover rates among baseball teams in 2025 and found that Indiana State experienced the highest rate of turnover at 98%, followed by Southern Indiana (95%), Nicholls State (89%), Washington State and Stephen F. Austin (86%), Longwood and San Jose State (85%), Saint Joseph’s (84%), Oral Roberts and Kentucky (83%), Delaware State, VCU, UC Riverside and Miami (FL) (82%) and Southern Illinois (81%). Smart also points out that Stephen F. Austin did not return a single hitter with a plate appearance in 2024, while LSU experienced a turnover rate of 92% in its pitching rotation en route to winning the national title. Smart adds some context: “Coaching changes make up five of the top six (and top three overall). What’s notable in this group, though, is Kentucky: The Wildcats reached a regional final despite hefty turnover both in the lineup and on the mound. Kentucky’s top three hitters by plate appearances were new as were four of the top five by innings pitched. Finding meaningful freshman contributors alongside role players elevating and strong transfer additions can overcome practically any amount of turnover. … Statistically, the correlations to a team’s record are pretty weak when you consider just the data from the 2025 season. Teams that have higher percentages of plate appearances to replace tend to have slightly lower win percentages, but it’s a very weak relationship. If you look year-over-year, you get a slightly stronger relationship, but it’s still weak – it suggests teams with higher offensive turnover tend to see a decline in win percentage, but not at a statistically significant level.” More. The Tennessee Fund raised $169.5M in FY25, a new record that contributed to the “historic” $428M raised by the University of Tennessee Foundation. The Tennessee Fund’s previous record was $139.8M in FY24. For context, it was $35.6M in FY21. The FY25 annual fund set another highwater mark, at $72.4M. For the fourth consecutive year, every full-time member of the Tennessee Athletics Department has made a philanthropic contribution to UT's annual staff giving initiative. (link)

In FY25, the Penn Champions Club raised more than $37.1M in commitments across annual funds, endowments, and capital projects, marking one of the strongest overall totals in Penn Athletics history. The haul included $7.7M+ in annual fund donations, $800K+ in matching funds secured through the Match the Moment Challenge and $1.2M+ raised in the Red & Blue Challenge. Additionally, there was a 29% increase in donors at the Athletic Director’s Circle ($25K+) level YOY. (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, On3’s Pete Nakos and Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich offer updates from the College Sports Commission. Overall, “between June 11 and Aug. 20, more than 5.1K NIL deals have been cleared. Deals range from $600 to $1.5M,” while “23.2K student-athletes are registered on NIL Go.” Dellenger adds that the “CSC plans to release data from NIL Go (deals denied, those in arbitration, etc) each month, starting in September. High school athletes are required to submit deals that they received as juniors/seniors once they enroll in college (deals will be evaluated then).” He also clarifies that the high school athlete requirement “hasn't been formally approved yet. It is under consideration to be adopted.” Dellenger continues on to mention that MMR companies have been “deemed associated entities” with the CSC “further examining the determination of apparel companies as associated entities.” Christovich highlights this interesting nugget: “NIL Go, the software created by Deloitte to scrutinize whether NIL deals are ‘pay-for-play’ is being operated manually. That means that human beings are looking through every single deal and clearing it or rejecting it, rather than AI. Deloitte, which built NIL Go, gathered data to do a range of compensation analysis. The CSC is now working with Deloitte to continue that process.” (link, link, link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez talks to PokesNews.com’s Jeff Bugher about a number of topics. On expansion, Nevarez notes that while there are strong programs out there to consider, “the hurdles are significant” to make new additions, and for now, the league is holding steady. Nevarez: “There are a lot of amazing FCS programs that we would ordinarily be very interested in. There's a two-year waiting period, there's a $5M fee that needs to be paid, and we just strategically at this time didn't want to take the risk that those bylaws might change, might get more stringent, or the pathway to FBS might close before those schools had an opportunity to join us. So we did not consider FCS this time around—not for lack of potentially great schools. … Never say never. We're just on pause for now. We're going to get through a media rights [negotiation], but we are constantly looking at membership.” Discussing a new TV and media rights deal, Nevarez asserts that she doesn’t expect a big shake-up moving forward: “I think you're going to see relatively similar value in deals. Boise State is certainly a value proposition. They were actually called out by name in our original media contracts because of what they built and their media value. But we anticipate re-signing all of our legacy partners as well as adding some new ones.” (link)

Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh weighs in on the state of the Badgers football program and says: “I think [HC Luke Fickell] and his staff have done a really good job in a really challenging time, since the conclusion of last season, to both adapt and assemble a team that I think is going to be really exciting this year. I give him credit for the willingness to make some changes.” Despite the expansion of the Big Ten, McIntosh insists that “our expectations are to strive for championships. And that's something that I was born into as a player here. That's something that, for decades now, has been part of who we are. … The expectation is the expectation. Having said that, there are, not even specific to last year's team or the last two years, developments that happen during the season that have an effect on your team. And it's no secret that the number of games that we played without our starting quarterback didn't make it any easier for us.” On what he sees in this year’s team specifically: “I think a requirement for Wisconsin football and [for] the level at which we want to play and the expectations that we have, the No. 1 requirement is physicality up front. I've been really encouraged. … Maybe that's just my own bias, given my own experience, but I do believe that that is [important]. If you look at our history as a program, you look at our best teams, our best teams are really strong on both sides of the ball up front.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy provides details on South Carolina’s new deal with Nike. As part of the agreement, the Gamecocks will receive $5M over a 10-year term for an average annual value of $500K, there’s a royalty rate of 15% of net sales, a retail product allotment of $70M over the term ($7M average annual value) and a supplemental product allotment of $2.5M to be allocated at USC’s discretion. Additionally, former Gamecock and WNBA standout A’ja Wilson’s “gear will be integrated into Gamecocks basketball” through the providing of signature sneakers and the exploration of travel and other team gear over the term with a cash alternative of $15M if not provided by July 15, 2027. Nike will also provide USC football with a bespoke alt uniform as part of an energy program that includes more than 15 elite college football programs and supply Vapor Elite, Alpha Menace and Force Savage cleat silos for the 2026-27 campaign. Among the numerous performance bonuses available through the apparel deal are $100K for a football national title, $50K for a men’s or women’s basketball crown and $25K for a MCWS or WCWS championship. More from Arizona State AD Graham Rossini, this time regarding indoor facility plans for the Sun Devils: "It's too early [for a timeline], but as soon as possible. We're studying the site, defining the scope. We have been talking to architects and our partners at ASU who get involved with capital projects, so we want to start fundraising. In the next 30 days or so, we'll have the scope more clarified, and then it's just a matter of how soon can we get funded to a threshold that allows us to start the project." (link)

Kansas and Legends produced $187M of capital commitments from new premium seating sales at the newly-renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who reports that total easily topped original projections of $127M from a different consultancy early on in the project. Prior to the renovation, the stadium had 40 suites with a capacity of approximately 650, but that’s now increased to approximately 3K sold-out premium seats. Deputy AD for External Affairs & Revenue Generation Jason Booker: “I think there were times when people thought we were overbuilding premium. … And when you start to look at the premium trends across the country, we probably didn’t build enough.” Per McCormick, “each seat purchase began with a capital gift that went into the renovation project fund and then unlocked the opportunity for buyers to purchase tickets in different levels. Each seat included an annual donation level and annual ticket cost.” (link)

On3’s Keenan Cummings reports that West Virginia has added over 9.5K in new football season-ticket holders with overall sales totals rising from 28K in 2024 to a current mark of 33,208 on the way to an expected finish between 33.5-34K. In addition to season ticket growth, Cummings also notes that “Mountaineer Athletic Donations have continued to climb as well both in terms of the number of donors and the amount of gifts.” (link)

LSU Football HC Brian Kelly points out the stark differences that still exist between college football and the NFL, noting: “Look, the NFL is $280M a year in salary cap. We’re going to be just about $18M. There’s a big difference between $280M and $18M. So if you can’t see the difference between the two, then you’re not really understanding that what you want to develop your son to be is the best version of himself so he can get the big money in three years. It’s starting to resonate back to that. Be competitive with other offers that they may get, but at the end of the day, it’s still about showing them that if you come to LSU, we’re going to develop you in all facets. So when you leave here, not only are you a better player, you’re a better man, you’re a better person and you can go into an NFL locker room. … The NFL knows that. They know that if they go through our program here, not only are they really good players, but they’re prepared for that next step. And that next step is really important because they’re going to pay them a lot more money than we were paying them.” (link)

Many around the media world are questioning UCLA Football’s media policies after Bruins HC DeShaun Foster was asked if he could “explain kind of the more restrictive media policies put in place recently, with no players today, no interviews, no feature interviews, less viewing.” Foster replied: "Yeah, you guys film our practice and put it online. If I was an opponent for another team, I'd look right at your guys' stuff and see what's going on. So for them not to get a beat on Tino or depth or anything that's going on, that's why it's closed." Asked to clarify why that pertains to player interviews, Foster responded: “That's the same thing. Because if they come over and interview, then you guys are gonna ask me, 'Are they a starter? Are they this? Are they that?’" Does Foster worry about the marketing impact for the program at all? "No, I'll let you guys handle all of that. And I'm not worried about the marketing. Because what marketing does, if you win games, you're marketed. So we're going to go out there and focus on winning games. That's why we left for training camp. But if I was just trying to just let everything be open, we could have just stayed right here and did that. We're going to work and go away and come back and everything's going to be fine." (link)
