DePauw AD Stevie Baker-Watson sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss the future of DIII amidst the changes across college athletics, as she believes: “If nothing else, we’re going to get people thinking about how we deliver our athletics experience differently.” With the House settlement roster caps, Baker-Watson believes small college athletic departments have to be nimble and understand that while certain DI opportunities may disappear, that does not mean they will play in Division II or III. Further: “We've also got to be really careful that again, more is not better. It does not do us any good to have 75 people on a baseball roster. It does not do us any good to have 40 people on a softball roster. There are some programs that are going to be affected by these roster caps, so there are probably going to be just some kids in general that aren't going to have the opportunity to play college athletics within the NCAA because it's going to push down because you're going to start to see who is really looking at the experience and who is looking at the net tuition revenue that's coming in. The folks who are looking at the tuition revenue that comes with sports are going to have 75 kids on a baseball team or 40 on a softball team. Those that care about the experience are probably going to have a softball team that might be 25 to 30 and a baseball team that'll be maybe 35 to 45, depending on how many pitchers that you need. So for us, we can't think that it doesn't affect us, nor can we be on our heels in all of this. But I think we need to pay attention to see what's happening in the moment with those kids that we're recruiting. I think that's what's going to tell us what the next big step is going to be.” On a potential split in DIII, Baker-Watson states: “I don't think we would split into a Division Four, but I do think that there's a pocket of presidents and a reasonable number, a significant number of presidents, that are going to say we want to do things differently. So this may be that moment where that group of 80 to 100 to 120 schools actually branches off into something else that is more of their liking and more aligned with how they think as a group compared to the rest of the division.” Lots more on BOSCA. New Husson AD Christopher Parsons has begun in his new role leading the Eagles. Parsons on his focus: “For right now, I think it’s really important that we get into a place where we’re making sure that we’re supporting the programs that we currently have. Once we are in a place where we are doing that, then I think there’s room for growth. That may be adding new varsity progams. It may be adding varsity programs that are not under the NCAA.” (link)

Legal Matters…
➤ Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares finds Roanoke violated the state’s human rights act and Title IX by retaliating and discriminating against Women’s Swimming student-athletes after a male swimmer had undergone hormone therapy and begun competing with the women’s team. The Office of Civil Rights found that female student-athletes’ concerns were ignored until individuals publicly spoke out about their concerns, at which point they were retaliated against by having study-abroad applications denied. ➤ Eastern Michigan (DI)/former Wayne State (MI) (DII) Football student-athlete Blake Bustard has been granted a preliminary injunction, making him eligible for the entire 2025-26 season. Bustard’s case surrounded the disparity in redshirt limits between DI and DII and the NCAA’s five-year rule, as his attorney Diana Florence states: “We believe this case should set precedent not just for Blake, but for every college athlete facing arbitrary rules that can derail their careers. The court made it clear that the NCAA cannot hide behind outdated regulations when they cause real, life-changing harm to student-athletes. This sets a precedent for fairness and common sense in college sports.” (link)

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) has penned a letter to the presidents, chancellors and regents at 350 Division I institutions, voicing strong opposition to the SCORE ACT, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit. In her correspondence, Cantwell “criticized the Republican-backed bill, which aims to codify the House v. NCAA settlement into federal law while granting antitrust immunity to governing bodies and conferences in college sports,” arguing that the bill would “exacerbate existing inequalities among NCAA member institutions by consolidating power within the SEC and Big Ten.” Citing conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s concurring opinion from the Alston case in which he wrote: “Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate,” Cantwell cautions that “[the bill] would entrench the ongoing ‘arms race’ in college football, jeopardize funding for women’s and Olympic sports, and roll back recent legal advancements that have strengthened the rights of all college athletes.” She also contends that “under the SCORE Act, the bill would preempt state laws granting athletes NIL rights related to media distribution once the House settlement expires in 10 years. This, she argued, would effectively strip athletes of any future right to control or receive compensation for the use of their NIL in game broadcasts and media coverage.” Lots more. (link)

With Salve Regina Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey without HCs or conference homes, DIII Hockey News’ Chris Sugar asks what happened and what is next? Amidst the hockey realignment that saw the NEHC membership disperse after their arrival, the Seahawks enter 2025-26 as an independent. Women’s HC David Lun has departed for the same role at UMass Boston, while Men’s HC Zech Klann is no longer leading the program as of last week. Sugar takes aim at the administration for failing to proactively plan for the future, noting that while Salve says its schedule is being finalized, the Seahawks do not appear on most DIII programs’ schedules that have been released. AD Sean Sullivan, in a statement: “Salve remains committed to having competitive, successful women’s and men’s hockey teams. We’re all eager for conference clarity, and we’re actively engaged in conversations with potential conference partners. […] To reach the future we envision, we are prepared to make the critical decisions that we believe will set the team up well moving forward. A national search for the men’s hockey head coach is underway, and the women’s head coach position has already attracted impressive applicants that we’re reviewing right now. In the interim, I am working with our assistant coaches and team captains to provide steady guidance to our student athletes. We are committed to supporting them fully — academically, athletically, and personally to ensure continuity and success.” (link)
