For SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, the question of whether it’s good for an individual conference commissioner to be the most powerful person in college football is an interesting one, according to USA Today’s Blake Toppmeyer. Sankey: “The question is interesting, because I’ve never accepted the ‘powerful’ label. My responsibility is to be influential and effective. If I were to reframe the question, do I think it’s appropriate for a commissioner of one league to be both influential and effective? I do think that is appropriate, and I think that is part of the responsibility. I’m also not so driven by ego that I think this is about me. The position, the conference, the people, the history provide the platform.” Toppmeyer adds that a part of Sankey’s effectiveness is born through a combination of preparation and self-scouting with the commissioner reviewing and evaluating his past interviews to forge a “knack for tactfully communicating with a variety of audiences, from reporters to university presidents or athletics directors to athletes to fellow commissioners.” West Virginia AD Wren Baker: “If you look at people who can influence decisions, people whose opinion is sought after and considered with great weight on issues that are pertinent and relevant, if you’re making a list, you certainly don’t get very far down that list without getting to his name.” More from Toppmeyer. Appearing Wednesday on Andy & Ari On3, Brett McMurphy brings attention to this little realignment tidbit: “Give Maryland AD Jim Smith credit. He was asked by Inside Maryland radio how many teams will be in the Big Ten in 2030, and he didn’t hesitate. He said 20. [...] Jim Smith, to his credit, did not name the two teams that he thinks will be joining. I’ve kind of gone back-and-forth on this. I really believe the new members of the Big Ten, whether those members join in 28, 29 or 30 … will be an AAU member school, and there are five current in the Big 12, eight in the ACC and, of course, Notre Dame. Notre Dame will remain an Independent until the world implodes, so forget your hopes of getting Notre Dame. I do think they’ll pick from the eight ACC AAU schools or, potentially, from the five Big 12 members that are currently AAU universities.” (link)

WDRB’s Eric Crawford reports Louisville plans to initiate discussions with the NCAA about returning the school’s vacated 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship banner and a reexamination of the program’s sanctions in light of continuing major college sports landscape shifts. Cardinals AD Josh Heird: “We know how much that special season and national title still mean to our former players, our fans and the Louisville community. With the significant changes in intercollegiate athletics, new guidelines and principles regarding sanctions, and recent rulings in NCAA enforcement cases, now is the appropriate time to revisit Louisville's sanctions with the NCAA, including the prohibition on displaying a championship banner. We look forward to engaging with current NCAA leadership in hopes of seeing a fair and meaningful resolution. [...] It's not just about a banner. It's about fairness.” (link)

South Carolina has released “reimagination plans” for Williams-Brice Stadium after receiving state approval to begin a multiyear construction project. The reimagining will focus on three key areas: overall fan experience (including stadium circulation, concessions, restrooms and the Cockpit), premium offerings and student-athlete experience. Regarding the latter, the football team’s space inside the stadium will be completely redesigned to include a new team lobby/recruit lounge, locker room with new lockers, equipment room, training room, player holding area, interview room and new male and female trainer’s locker rooms. Construction will start following the 2025 season and be completed in three phases between the 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028 football seasons. The first phase between 2025-26 seasons will be the renovation of the general concourses and student section, the second phase between the 2026-27 seasons will include the premium areas including the 100-200 sections and the third phase between the 2027-28 seasons will include the southeast corner of the stadium. Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati: “In the coming months, we will be able to show some of the finalized concepts we believe Gamecock fans will be excited about as these plans will significantly elevate their game day experience. Once complete, the stadium project will create new revenue streams to support the long-term success of Gamecock Athletics while providing our fans and donors with a first-class game day experience.” (link)

AL.com’s Michael Casagrande reports that with Alabama’s most recently disclosed Nike apparel and footwear contract having expired on July 1, 2025, a new contract extension was “done without a public announcement, press release or any acknowledgement.” Remarking that “it’s a very competitive contract” and that the school extended its deal with Nike “a few years ago,” AD Greg Byrne also told Casagrande that the “most recent extension was not available for public inspection.” Overall, most business-related Alabama athletic contracts are run through the Crimson Tide Foundation, rather than the University, which allows the deal to remain private between the two entities. Per Byrne, the deal is “in line with where we should be as one of the top programs in the country.” Alabama’s 2013 Nike contract was “worth $63M in cash and apparel, plus a $5M cash signing bonus. That annual value was in the $5.25M range, while Ohio State and Texas were netting $16M a year.” (link)

Forbes’ Kristi Dosh notes that college football players in 2021 earned roughly $393M in NIL. “Four years later, that figure could reach $1.9B in 2025, when you factor in revenue sharing. Collectives…peaked in 2024 at $853M, but could drop significantly this year as schools take over some of the cash flowing to athletes now that revenue sharing is allowed. A whopping $1.4B is expected in revenue sharing this year, supplemented by $213.4M from collectives and $290M from commercial NIL deals.” Dosh also points out that “although Group of 6 institutions are expected to share less revenue with athletes than Power 4 programs, Opendorse’s research shows the revenue being shared as a percentage is nearly identical between the two groups: football athletes are projected to receive 13.1% of the revenue generated by Power 4 institutions, while that number is slightly higher at 13.3% in the Group of 6.” Overall, 66.5% of football players earn less than $10K annually, 7.4% fall between $50K and $99K, and just 0.3% clear $1M. “Breaking it down by conference, the Big 12 is giving the biggest slice of the revenue sharing pie to quarterbacks at 23.1%, compared to 14.4% in the Big Ten. The Big 12 also pays running backs more, while the SEC outspends the others in only one category: linebackers. All four conferences in the Power 4 spend more on offense than defense, but the SEC leads the way when it comes to defensive spending.” Additionally, the “numbers show there’s a good financial reason for athletes to transfer. Athletes who transferred during the December window saw their earnings rise by 61.5%, while those in the spring portal window saw a 13.6% increase.” Also from Dosh: “Beginning August 1, 2025, schools were officially permitted to present NIL and revenue-sharing offers to high school recruits. Opendorse projects $328M in offers will flow to high school prospects in August alone.” (link)

Last Saturday’s Aer Lingus Classic between Iowa State & Kansas State drew 22K traveling fans and an estimated 30K locals to Aviva Stadium, according to The Athletic’s Christopher Kamrani, who reports the event generated an estimated $150M economic impact for the city. Kamrani notes the week also “spotlighted the grassroots growth of the game: Ireland’s U19 Wolfhounds, launched in 2023, played just their fifth contest, a lopsided loss to a U.S. prep team but celebrated as a milestone.” NFL Ireland reporter Michael McQuaid tells Kamrani: “It feels like we’re at the tip of the iceberg here and the growth is just going to come. You can imagine what it will be like 10 years from now.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark adds: “There are a lot of countries interested in bringing college football to their markets. There’s probably not a week where we don’t get a call or some kind of interest. I think what Ireland has done here, they have a blueprint. They’ve been at it for quite some time. It’s more than just a game. Because there’s a lot more around the game.” More from Kamrani. (link)

Incoming North Carolina AD Steve Newmark joins the Carolina Insider podcast to discuss his Chapel Hill roots, career path and his vision for the Tar Heels. On the transition to AD, Newmark emphasizes humility and learning: “This year it’s going to be just learning from Bubba … I've been welcomed with open arms, and I'm trying to absorb as much as I can on areas that I didn't have as much exposure to [such as] compliance. Bubba and I have a very close relationship and that was a key factor in my decision to try to transition from the NASCAR world and the professional sports world.” Newmark pledges to balance success in football and basketball with success in Olympic sports, explaining that Olympic “sports are core to who we are. And having that breadth and scope of programs to me is absolutely critical going forward. And so we've got to leverage that because it's a differentiator. There's a cost to doing that, but I'm confident that we can figure out a right way so we can maintain our identity.” When it comes to adapting to generate new resources, Newmark notes: “We are probably going to have to do some things that make us a little bit uncomfortable because that's the way we've got to generate revenue.” Uncomfortable how? “I just think probably with branding. Now, of course, everybody who knows my background – and I loved some of the memes out there of the football uniforms that look like a NASCAR uniform with with logos all over it…but my view is that that's not the direction we're going, but we do need to think about how we can evolve.” Full interview. More from Rutgers AD Keli Zinn with thoughts on the facilities profile in Piscataway: “Right now, (I am) admittedly probably preferential towards what would be a renovation on that building (Jersey Mike’s Arena), but we need to gain a real clear understanding of what it looks like and some of the guts, if you will, that exists there. It sounds like initially they’ve done some really good work over there to get a good deep dive into it. Now it’s making a decision on where we’re headed. Because otherwise we’re just going to spin our wheels looking at two different plans versus making some movement to bring them to closure.” Another focal point is on an indoor football facility with Zinn highlighting that a new building would help not just football, but “a lot of our programs” by removing congestion from the current practice bubble. Zinn: “Right now, there’s just so much that goes into that bubble that getting an indoor practice facility for football would help all of them. A lot of brick and mortar, which takes lots of money, but you can accomplish anything with time and money. … We need to be in a place if we’re going to recruit the best talent for them not to have interruptions in their training and development.” (link, link)

On a Steamboat Institute panel discussing the House settlement and future of college athletics, Colorado AD Rick George believes that “as we get to the next three to five years, I think what you’re going to see…it’s going to be 48 to 64 teams that [networks are] going to want in one league because they need that inventory. … If you can watch a [football] game and you’ve got 11M viewers on a 7 PM Mountain Time on a Saturday night, that’s valuable to the networks. And again, we’re undervalued. I think you’re going to see a lot of jockeying go around. The Big Ten’s the first to the table … I think in 2029 their deal ends, so they’ll start negotiating at the end of ’27 into ’28, and then that’ll come out. And once that happens, you’re going to see a lot of other movement out there. And so what I’ve told our department is we need to position ourselves so we’re in that conversation.” (link)
|
Western Michigan AD Dan Bartholomae on if he feels the House settlement will affect the transfer portal moving forward: “The transfer portal’s been around now for a while and NIL and revenue sharing is accelerating some of the decisions surrounding the portal. … Frankly, we’re at a level in Division I where we know that we may lose athletes every year and we’re going to gain them as well. So, there’s nothing new there for us with the portal. However, … we’ve got an opportunity for a reset. I don’t think this is the end. I never thought this was going to be the end. I think this is just the beginning and you’re starting to hear the national conversation center on, okay, there’s accountability on our end, right? But, perhaps there’s not as much accountability on the student-athletes’ end. These year-to-year situations you’re finding yourself in are damaging. They’re damaging for the programs. … We’ve seen it firsthand. They’re not always what’s best for the student-athletes, so perhaps what’s next is an opportunity to bargain. What that looks like in the face of an employment atmosphere and unionization, that remains to be seen. … That’s probably the unknown in all of this, but frankly, I hear an eagerness from both sides right. Not just the administrators, but from the student-athletes like how do we get to a position where we’re comfortable over a two- to four-year period as opposed to 12 months in and 12 months out.” More on Collegiate Sports Connect. ASUN Commissioner Jeff Bacon sits down with Assistant Commissioner for Strategic Communications William Hall to discuss a number of topics including the upcoming strategic alliance between the league and the WAC. Bacon: “You know, we’ve got two conferences right now that stand on their own independent islands and are spending a lot of money in the same ways. … That’s insanity, and that’s what we’ve been doing for a long time. Well, we're not going to do that anymore. We’re going to take two conferences, put them together under the structural umbrella that’s going to say on behalf of both conferences, we’re now going to spend less money. We’re going to consolidate staff. We’re going to consolidate infrastructure. Those types of things to bring down and reduce our operational costs, which we just have to do as a business entity as we move forward. … We also think we’re gonna make a lot of money, or at least more money, because again, just like we have been out in the marketplace trying to sell multimedia rights and media rights and sponsorships and partnerships and whatever else we might be doing in that space, we’ve been doing it independently as small organizations. Well, we’re going to pull those together. … The other thing that consortium is going to do for us, it’s going to allow us to give our coaches and our institutions games on their schedules. And not just games on their schedules, but home games on their schedules. And that’s getting really hard to do, right? … It’s saving money, it’s making money and it’s getting games for people.” More from Bacon. (link)
