More from DePauw AD Stevie Baker-Watson’s Small College Conversation as she dives deep into the value of the Monon Bell game and how the department extrapolates its learnings from this prominent event across the program. During her tenure, the Tigers have shifted their approach to hosting the Monon Bell from “a regular game on steroids” to much more. That means looking through a customer service lens to elevate the tailgating culture, fan engagement surrounding the game itself and awareness for other programs or initiatives around the university. “We are not a big operation, but we know on that day all our eyes are on us. Again, every time we touch our alumni, every time we touch a person, that's an opportunity for us to create a fan and for them to want to come back to us and to want to follow us during the year.” This past year, DePauw upgraded its sound system and had the pep band more present and involved, sitting with the students. Further, Baker-Watson says they will continue with the idea of an all-inclusive ticket, similar to the Savannah Bananas. Doing so did limit concession choices for fans but sped up the process for food and drinks, allowing people to spend less time in line. More on BOSCA. (link)

The NCAA & Venmo are collaborating in an effort to strengthen protections to curb student-athlete harassment linked to sports betting. To accomplish that, Venmo will offer a dedicated hotline for student-athletes and the NCAA to report potential cases of abuse for investigation and identify typologies of athlete harassment on Venmo, provide a best practices guide for student-athletes to stay safe on Venmo with details on the reporting hotline, monitor student-athletes' accounts on an ongoing basis to help mitigate an influx of requests based on game performance and work directly with them to implement additional security measures as needed and educate users on the possible outcomes of harassing athletes through unwanted requests to athletes, including potential account closure. NCAA President Charlie Baker: “The harassment we are seeing across various online platforms is unacceptable, and we need fans to do better. We applaud Venmo for taking action, and we need more social media companies and online platforms to do the same. Several states have passed laws to crack down on this behavior to protect student-athletes, and we hope more do the same because stopping this abuse requires action on multiple fronts.” (link)

The NCAA has appealed the decision granting preliminary injunctions to four West Virginia football players to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes: “This places eligibility rule cases in *four* different appellate courts. … Gotta think the NCAA has to go 4/4 in these cases to come out ahead, and that's tough.” (link)

IWU unveils a handful of promotions: Assoc. AD for Facilities, Advancement and Alumni Relations Tony Bankston and Assoc. AD/SWA/Women’s Volleyball HC Kim Nelson-Brown to Senior Assoc. ADs, Asst. AD for Athletic Communications Katie Gonzales to Assoc. AD for Communications and Marketing, Asst. AD for Student-Athlete Wellness Lindsey Kellar to Assoc. ➤ Higher Ed Dive’s Natalie Schwartz reports that 72% of financial aid administrators say they’ve experienced “noticeable changes” in Federal Student Aid communications, responsiveness and processing timelines since the U.S. Department of Education conducted mass layoffs back in March, according to a July survey by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA). The results also highlight that “federal support channels for students are breaking down,” including through issues with call centers, with these disruptions impeding institutional ability to assist students. Per the survey: “Unless federal service channels stabilize, the aid system risks becoming less accessible, less predictable, and less trusted by the very students it is intended to serve.” Education Department Deputy Press Secretary Ellen Keast “accused the survey of having methodological shortcomings,” pointing to a response rate of less than 10% of all colleges that work with Federal Student Aid. In an e-mailed statement, Keast responded to the results, writing: “It is an embarrassment for NASFAA to release a ‘survey’ that blatantly parrots falsehoods and is not representative of the higher education community nor the American people’s overwhelming charge for change. Clearly, NASFAA is peddling a false narrative to preserve the status quo.” NASFAA President and CEO Melanie Storey believes the survey reflects the “the real, everyday experiences of financial aid professionals” continuing on to add that “to dismiss these concerns as fabricated or political undermines the expertise of those working directly with students every day, eager to deliver on the promise of postsecondary education, and shows that the administration is not interested in working with experts in the field to achieve the best results for students; instead, it is focused on advancing its own agenda.” More from Schwartz.
