Executives of the American, Mountain West, MAC, Conference USA, Pac-12 and Sun Belt held an all-day meeting Tuesday in Dallas, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “They explored shared interests and a collaborative strategy in Congressional lobbying, NCAA governance, development & revenue-generation. While the non-A4 conference commissioners often hold calls together, the meeting is notable as it included university presidents as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs in a more serious discussion over philosophical ideas related to the future of the industry. Leaders examined several issues, most notably the U.S. House bill (SCORE Act) and its enshrinement of the new NCAA governance model, as well as unifying FBS media rights – an idea gaining momentum from many universities. A reminder that the new NCAA governance model grants 65% weighted voting to the four power conferences (championship access/revenue excluded) – a move that necessitates alignment from the other leagues, including the Pac-12, which continues to aspire to reclaim autonomous status.” (link)

Admitting he’s been a bit of a “provocateur at times” during his three years at the helm, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark balks at suggestions that he’s some sort of “proverbial bull in the china shop,” per Hoops HQ’s Seth Davis. Yormark: “I’d rather say I’m a change agent. I’m not afraid to break boundaries. I’m not afraid to do new things, all in an effort to create value and momentum for this conference. So if I’m a change agent, I’m a change agent that wants to bring about positive change.” Any league enhancement idea is on the table for Yormark from pursuing TV rights negotiation initiatives, to reimaging the Big 12’s Basketball Media Day to attempting to take the league globally by staging events outside the U.S., even if that means ruffling some of his fellow commissioners’ feathers along the way. Yormark: “We’re not going to agree on everything, but it’s collegial, it’s friendly and it’s competitive. And I think my colleagues would say the same thing.” With college athletics facing unprecedented times, Yormark believes that now isn’t the time for maintaining the status quo, remarking: “There are debates I’m going to win and there are debates I’m going to lose, but I always go back to what’s fair. I tell my ADs and anyone who will listen that we need to put progress over perfection. It’s not going to happen overnight. There are a lot of key stakeholders that have a seat at the table and it requires a lot of hard work to get a consensus. That’s why we’re all working so hard to get this right. … I understand what public perception might be, but I’m very, very confident in the position of the Big 12 right now. We’re performing at a high level and we’re investing at a high level. I really believe our better days are ahead.” (link)

The ACC and its creative partners at Wasserman have joined together to “develop two spots using bobbleheads of school mascots and cheerleaders to highlight their athletic, academic, and cultural traditions,” while helping give fans a sense of the league in a shifting college sports landscape, according to AdWeek’s Jason Notte. Wasserman CCO Danny Nunez: “As we took a look at just the landscape, we recognized that we have something that they necessarily don’t, which is culturally iconic marks that extend far beyond sport. When you look at the [North Carolina] Tar Heel, when you look at a [Wake Forest] Demon Deacon or a Miami Hurricane, and when you look at brands and culture—especially from a merch, streetwear, or a fashion play—when they go to license NCAA schools to do edition collegiate drops, they’re using ACC marks, so as we started to identify that within the culture, we said, ‘Wait a minute, we have something really special here.’” With the ACC planning to roll out the new “Accomplish Greatness” spots in Week 1 of football season on linear TV, digital and social media, Wasserman Executive Creative Director Dan Rozier notes that “with 18 different characters involved, it was necessary to collaborate with the various ACC schools” to make sure of proper mascot tone and demeanor. Rozier: “The good thing about bobbleheads is that it was a little bit of a cheat code in that they are so expressive just by nature, and their faces are very distinct. What’s nice is that you look at the Syracuse [Otto the] Orange, and you’re like, ‘I know how this guy talks,’ and you look at the Duke Blue Devil, and you’re like, ‘I can hear the voice of this man.’” (link)

Asked if the Longhorns football program might shy away from playing “tougher yet marquee non-conference games” in the future with contests already on the schedule against Ohio State (2026), Michigan (2027) and Notre Dame (2028, 2029), Texas AD Chris Del Conte says no, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis. Del Conte: “The brand of Texas, we owe it to college football to play this type of game. … I think with the discussions going around the CFP whether expansion or not, the regular season matters. Are we talking about the NFL opening games right now? No, they’re talking about Texas playing Ohio State, they’re talking about Alabama playing Florida State, Clemson playing LSU. Those games really set the tone for college. We’re not shying away from it. We want to preserve college football in the national landscape. Us not playing [Texas] A&M for a long time hurt college football. Nebraska not playing Oklahoma makes no sense to me. We’ve got to have those games, they’re important.” (link)

Meanwhile, USC has reportedly made an amended offer to extend its annual football series with Notre Dame for multiple years beyond this season, according to Trojans’ AD Jen Cohen, who tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje: “We’re trying to extend the series. This is an important series for us and for our fans and for our program, and hopefully we get to a resolution that supports that and is in the best interest of our program.” Negotiations remain ongoing, but Cohen says she is “really hopeful” that USC’s new offer, better accommodating Notre Dame’s preference of a long-term deal, would lead to an agreement “very soon.” The Trojans previously broached the possibility of moving the match-up to the first month of the season to better balance the demands of its future Big Ten-travel slate with Cohen noting that the date the game is contested is currently “the biggest issue” for USC in negotiations. Cohen: “It’s not very typical that a P4 school would travel back and forth across the country for a nonconference game in the middle of October. Show me who else is doing that and doing the kind of travel we’re doing. It’s a cool tradition to play at the end of the year, but then those are back-to-back rivalry games with a conference championship — and our opponent doesn’t play in a conference championship. They have a lot more flexibility in scheduling than we do. We’re in a bigger conference that doesn’t have the same level of ability to protect us in the way they schedule us for that type of game.” (link)

Michigan State AD J Batt tells the Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari that the Spartans are “going to be on the front edge” of generating additional revenue beyond NIL to support their student-athletes, remarking: “The first part is understanding what that means exactly, of what an above and beyond the cap fair market value, valid business purpose, NIL means. And so certainly, I've spent a lot of time understanding what that is. And we're going to be aggressive about working with Spartan Sports Marketing, PlayFly (our MMR partner), to help provide and find different opportunities for student athletes. We've moved kind of away from fundraising around collectives, and we are very focused on working with our MMR partner to provide opportunities.” On the potential of selling naming rights to Spartan Stadium and other on-campus athletic venues: “The changes in college athletics, like them or not, have created additional pressure on revenue. And so I think the 30,000-foot change that you've seen is that, because of that pressure, we've got to consider more things that potentially we may not have done in the past. And certainly naming rights of stadiums, fields, other opportunities to monetize, optimize, we will be looking at all of those. The key is, and you mention it, is that you've got to find the right intersection between the business terms of an opportunity and aligning those with the institutional values of your university. … I think it's when you find the right fit and the right partner, you would certainly consider it.” Much more. Cal is in “respectable” financial shape heading into the 2025-26 athletic season, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes the Bears declined to reveal the amounts raised but said donations already have exceeded the matching totals of $6M for football and $1.5M for men’s basketball. “Football coach Justin Wilcox has more than $12M available, and men’s basketball coach Mark Madsen has more than $3M to use. … That doesn’t mean Wilcox and Madsen will spend every last dollar before the transfer portal opens for each sport over the winter and spring – the uncertainty generated by the transfer portal creates a need for fiscal flexibility. But for each sport, the Bears seemingly have cleared the threshold required for success.” Asked how he would define football success in 2025, Bears GM Ron Rivera told reporters last week: “Anything that puts us in a solid bowl game – eight, nine wins. I think that’s what you’re looking for. That shows growth from last year. … We all know the clock’s ticking. There’s pressure to be successful, especially in today’s climate.” Wilner adds: “The cost of success in the post-modern era of major college football – of winning eight or nine games – is steeper than Tightwad Hill. But remarkably, the Bears seem to have it covered.” (link)

Are Power 4 schools required to book a liability for the House v. NCAA settlement back damages? The short answer is no, according to James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis, who explains: “The settlement obligation rests with the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences, who were named defendants in the lawsuit. Schools are not parties to the lawsuit and have no enforceable duty to fund it. Accounting standards for both public (GASB) and private (FASB) institutions define a liability as a present obligation of the reporting entity. Schools don't meet that definition. Practically, conferences will cover the settlement by reducing future distributions. That means schools see lower revenues later, not a payable today.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is the most powerful person in college football, according to USA Today. Next on the list is ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus, followed by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. Fox Sports President/COO Mark Silverman, attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman, U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken, Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, NBC Sports President Rick Cordella and mega-agent Jimmy Sexton round out the top 10, followed by President Donald Trump at 11. On Trump: “Trump has involved the federal government in the interest of policing college sports, the focus on big-money college football. It seems a daunting bureaucratic lift. Will his actions – creating a presidential commission on college sports and signing an executive order to reform it – prove more symbolic than policy-changing?” Full list. (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel explains to The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb why the fine levied by the NCAA is going “way too far,” telling Webb: "We don't want to be close to violating rules. We don't want to be under investigation. We don't want to be cited for violations of rules. The disappointment to me is that they tried to tie this to postseason as it relates to what the penalty structure was. And then on top of that, to put fines at the level that they did to me was too far – way too far – for what these violations were. … If you want to put a fine on an institution, if that's the way we want to go as an NCAA, then do it. But stop talking about postseason bans of teams – please. That's my point. … If you're going to fine people, fine people. But let's not keep tying it to, 'Well, you would've gotten a postseason ban.' That is the part to me. You could talk about the excess of the fine itself, but what frustrates me about where we are in today's NCAA is this concept that we're still talking and tying things to postseason bans. Many of the people who were cited in this are no longer here. Why is that even a rationale to what you did? That's my point." Manuel acknowledged that the fines were in the tens of millions of dollars and present a real budgetary challenge. “It’s significant…[but] we’ll figure it out. We’ll see how we can accommodate it without taking away from what we do to drive success.” U-M has yet to figure out exactly how it will absorb the financial hit, including whether it comes from reserves, budget adjustments, or university support, but Manuel makes clear that the priority is to protect competitive resources for student-athletes and coaches. Michigan State AD J Batt was noncommittal when asked how MSU is approaching its future football games with Central Michigan after former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions was reportedly present on sidelines for the 2023 Chippewas-Spartans matchup. Batt: "I would just say that certainly there's parts of this that are under contract. But, paying close attention to the ongoing investigation. Paying close attention to it. I'll just say at the end of the day, we're gonna do what's best for Michigan State, and that'll be the North Star." (link)

Southland Commissioner Chris Grant on what the conference’s new six-year ESPN media deal extension brings to the league and why its linear component is so crucial: “[We’re] fortunate for Nick Dawson and Mallory Kenny [at ESPN] and their investment into the Southland Conference. They see our vision, and they believe in us. They doubled down in what they’ve been able to provide us in regard to setting the standard when it comes to FCS conferences as well as prioritizing getting us on linear opportunities such as [Week Zero]. … It shows the commitment from our institutions, what they’ve been doing on the digital broadcasts on ESPN+ that [Kenny] and [Dawson] saw the value in increasing our linear opportunities. Never before did we have guaranteed football as a part of our linear package. And now for three of the next six years, 50% of the time, we’ll be opening up Week Zero on ESPN or ESPN2. That’s phenomenal.” (link)

NJIT AD Lenny Kaplan sits down with College.town's Kristen Eargle at the 2025 NACDA Convention and talks about his approach to a post-House landscape, collaborating with his team, and revenue streams he will prioritize. Kaplan also talks about the secrets to remaining in one place for 25 years, sustaining culture and more. When it comes to growing revenue streams, Kaplan explains: "First and foremost, it's growing your sponsorship. So maybe a couple years ago, there would be things you wouldn't sign off on or a company you wouldn't want to deal with, and maybe take a step back and say, 'Well, you know what? Give me $500K, let's go back and rethink this a little bit.' Maybe there's a little more elasticity in what you think about signing on for.” Kaplan also notes: “One of the great things about athletics is we all share ideas. It’s one of the great industries like that. There’s really not a lot of trade secrets in athletics, especially when you talk to marketing and promotions and fundraising. Because your people are my people. It’s different people. So, we all want to succeed and it’s better for everybody.” Check out the full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

The NFL declined to comment to Pro Football Talk when asked about San Diego Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh’s 10-year NCAA show-cause. PFT’s Mike Florio: “In the interim, former [Jacksonville] Jaguars, and Ohio State, coach Urban Meyer pointed to the precedent set by the de facto suspension of former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel when he took a job with the [Indianapolis] Colts, arguing that the league should suspend Harbaugh, too.” NFL EVP of Public Affairs and Policy, Player Health and Safety Jeff Miller says that the league is aware of the NCAA’s decision and that the league has no comment, and Florio adds: “That’s fine, on the surface. Still, at some point, it’s fair to expect the league to either follow the precedent or to explain why it isn’t. Whatever the league is planning to do, the league isn’t talking about it.” (link)

Dartmouth AD Mike Harrity has set out to be “strategic and bold” in positioning the Big Green for sustained competitive success, and he says: “We’re committed to positioning Dartmouth Athletics to compete at the highest level and to doing it in a way that leverages Dartmouth’s distinctions as an intimately connected community that empowers leaders through experiential learning.” Over the past 15 months, Dartmouth coaches have earned 12 coach-of-the-year honors, and the Big Green claimed five conference or national titles last season. Harrity notes that “while we are thrilled to celebrate these early championship titles, we are focused on the process required to achieve sustained success and building a foundation to support that. Right now, our focus is on having a shared vision for excellence, creating the right culture, aligning resources, and supporting our people – especially our coaches. … The lessons learned on the fields of play, in the pools, or on the track are lasting.
