UC San Diego’s AD search is entering its final stages, according to CollegeAD, which reports: “After holding virtual interviews earlier this month, sources say the final pool of candidates has been visiting the UCSD campus. Sources say in-person interviews took place last week and continued into this week. It's our understanding that at least a pair of sitting athletic directors are among the group of finalists. Sources say other finalists include senior staffers from both the Power Four and mid-major ranks.” (link)

Southland Commissioner Chris Grant joins the FCS Football Talk podcast with Hero Sports’ Sam Herder and says of the new NCAA governance model: “It was tough in the concept that we'd be losing representation on a lot of these Division I committees that we participate on,” but “I'm still in a belief that it can all work out together as one ecosystem: Communication has to be strong. And I think we're working on that in a commissioner room and we are actually talking through it as FCS commissioners of what's best for FCS right now. It gives us the opportunity without trying to really create a separate, totally separate subdivision, but to work together more collectively and challenge us to be on the same page.” Grant credits the Power 4 conferences with creating much of the infrastructure mid-majors rely on: “When I have folks like Greg Sankey, you look at Jim Phillips, now Brett Yormark on the more business side of it, and Tony [Petitti] up at the Big Ten…a lot of things that we have as Division I members, even as mid-majors and even FCS, [is] because of what their brands and the way they forged forward — television, sponsorships, so on and so forth.” (link)

Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill pens an op-ed highlighting the league’s position in the post-House era and submits: “When you (or your parent or grandparent) close your eyes and recall what college sports has traditionally looked and felt like, that mental imagery is so much of what you still can expect when you step foot on campus for a contest at Weber State University or the University of Montana or Idaho State University, to name just a few of our member institutions. The passion, pageantry, and esprit de corps experienced at a college football game uniquely galvanize a campus with its alumni and fans, creating a sense of community and belonging that is increasingly critical in today’s ever-divisive world. Plus, the competitors in these competitions – who finally can monetize their name, image, and likeness – continue to be college students, earnestly pursuing a degree. … This is not lost on our campuses, and I commend our university presidents, athletic directors, coaches, and other campus leaders for continuing to reinforce and respect the importance of attending classes, achieving strong grades, and graduating with a major that is personally meaningful. Most importantly, kudos to our students for pouring into their academic and athletic pursuits.” (link)

More from Michigan AD Warde Manuel with The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb, this time on the Wolverines actively exploring the possibility of playing its 2026 football opener in Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Stadium, where the NFL has already hosted games. Manuel says the visit by his staff to assess hotels, venues, and logistics was encouraging but the financials remain central: “At a minimum, we’re going to break even. We’re not losing money by taking the game out of Michigan Stadium.” Beyond finances, Manuel emphasized the “long game” of using Michigan’s international brand to expand its fan base, merchandise sales, and corporate sponsorship opportunities overseas. Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois tells the Arizona Daily Star’s Michael Lev the Wildcats expect to win in football this season: “We have a scoreboard for a reason. If we’re going to keep score, we might as well be on the right side of that score.” Reed-Francois also points out the importance of athletics – and football in particular – as part of the overall campus ecosystem. “That energy, it goes beyond the field. It lifts our entire campus. It strengthens our community. It supports the local businesses that surround us. It paints a powerful picture of Tucson, not just for our community but for the entire country.” Lev subsequently notes that “initial estimates indicate that first-year enrollment at the UA could be down about 20% this fall. Other factors have contributed to that. I’m not suggesting a cause-and-effect relationship with football here. But it wouldn’t hurt if the team is better, more exciting and pulls off a noteworthy upset or two this year. If you want to get existential about it, you could argue that it’s imperative that UA football flourish. It’s possible – likely even – that college athletics will reorganize again in the near future. A super league of some sort – say, the top 70 athletic programs – feels like an inevitability. Football will be the determining factor in who’s in and who’s out. The last thing Reed-Francois — or anyone who supports the Wildcats — wants is for Arizona to be left behind.” (link)

Missouri State President Richard “Biff” Williams, AD Patrick Ransdell and Oak View Group Hospitality GM J.O. Bailey join the MoState Update podcast and make it clear the move to Conference USA was about more than football. Rather, they describe it as a campus-wide branding opportunity, a facilities refresh, a chance to raise enrollment and visibility, and an upgrade of the game-day experience for fans and students alike. Williams explains that “what excites me the most is we’re going to compete at the highest level in every sport. And I think we’re going to be very visible. It’s a new conference, new partnerships. What’s exciting to me is when we go to Conference USA and we meet with the other presidents and we meet with the other schools, we look like those schools. And the Missouri Valley, we’ve looked like those schools, but Missouri State University has really grown. We’ve grown in our academic profile. We’ve grown in our numbers. We’ve grown in our community, in the spirit. We don’t look like those Missouri Valley schools now. … We’re going to be in new states now. We’ll be in Texas and and New Hampshire and Florida, and we’re going to be all over the United States where before we just had different Midwest pockets.” Williams also notes the strategic plan seeks to increase enrollment to 30,000 students by 2030. “Those are students that are coming in. There’s more fans. There’s more buy-in. It’s the spirit. Any school that has made a change to FBS has seen an uptick in enrollment. So, I think what we’re doing in our academic profile, what we’re doing with our branding and our refresh, what we’re doing with our research profile, I think this all affects athletics and athletics affects all the rest of the campus.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty takes a look at the lengths to which schools are going to generate more revenue and writes: “Ask around about revenue generation, and the same things come up (trigger warning: you might feel, while reading the rest of this paragraph, like you’re inside a room wallpapered with a pitch deck): Stadium naming rights. Premium in-stadium experiences. Maximizing a multimedia rights partnership. Creative marketing and licensing. Creative use of facilities. Exploring, though not yet agreeing to, a private equity or private capital deal. Cost-cutting, including, in some cases, axing athletes or full programs. Jersey patches (which the NCAA has yet to approve). ROI (return on investment). ROO (return on objective). ROAS (return on ad spend).” Despite the increasing commercialization of the industry, Playfly CEO Craig Sloan says: “Our data actually says fans are not turned off by commercial engagements when it’s done in an appropriate, integrated way. And in some cases…brands are coming in but they’re actually creating a better experience, or they’re funding the school to a level where they can be even more competitive. People understand there is a value trade, if you will, on that front.” Mount St. Mary’s AD Brad Davis is always looking for ways to keep up and tells Dougherty: “At our level, an extra $10K matters a lot. That could be an extra player down the road, and we eventually hope to pay players some money in sports beyond basketball. So if it’s worth a dollar, and it’s worth our time, we’re listening.” More. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports progress on a college hoops video game from EA Sports has slowed down because of “deals individual schools are weighing with rival video game publishing label 2K Sports for a separate product.” More details from Portnoy: “The contention centers on EA Sports’ desire for exclusivity in the college basketball video game market, which it had sought after its proposal for a wide-ranging game incorporating every Division I men’s and women’s team was selected by CLC in June to be put forward to schools for their participation. [...] Talks remain active and fluid, but should EA Sports not be able to retain the exclusivity it desires, sources caution it could potentially exit college basketball gaming altogether.” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD Jay Artigues notes fans will notice there’s no scoreboard or video board this football season “because we have a new state-of-the-art facility coming. … It’s a $26M facility. Sacramento State is partnering with Cal Expo to build a new stadium at the current race track, according to CBS Sacramento’s Jake Gadon, who notes the use of the existing grandstands and adds: “The hope is the area will be the future home of Hornet football for the Fall of 2026. Both sides have begun surveying the area and doing studies to see what needs to happen to move forward. Currently, they know they will need to add more stands, refresh the current ones and add locker rooms.” Hero Sports’ Sam Herder adds: “Sac State is pivoting from a new on-campus stadium to building/renovating a stadium at a former race track. Getting something done by next season will be a challenge.” (link)

Executives of the American, Mountain West, MAC, Conference USA, Pac-12 and Sun Belt held an all-day meeting Tuesday in Dallas, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “They explored shared interests and a collaborative strategy in Congressional lobbying, NCAA governance, development & revenue-generation. While the non-A4 conference commissioners often hold calls together, the meeting is notable as it included university presidents as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs in a more serious discussion over philosophical ideas related to the future of the industry. Leaders examined several issues, most notably the U.S. House bill (SCORE Act) and its enshrinement of the new NCAA governance model, as well as unifying FBS media rights – an idea gaining momentum from many universities. A reminder that the new NCAA governance model grants 65% weighted voting to the four power conferences (championship access/revenue excluded) – a move that necessitates alignment from the other leagues, including the Pac-12, which continues to aspire to reclaim autonomous status.” (link)

Admitting he’s been a bit of a “provocateur at times” during his three years at the helm, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark balks at suggestions that he’s some sort of “proverbial bull in the china shop,” per Hoops HQ’s Seth Davis. Yormark: “I’d rather say I’m a change agent. I’m not afraid to break boundaries. I’m not afraid to do new things, all in an effort to create value and momentum for this conference. So if I’m a change agent, I’m a change agent that wants to bring about positive change.” Any league enhancement idea is on the table for Yormark from pursuing TV rights negotiation initiatives, to reimaging the Big 12’s Basketball Media Day to attempting to take the league globally by staging events outside the U.S., even if that means ruffling some of his fellow commissioners’ feathers along the way. Yormark: “We’re not going to agree on everything, but it’s collegial, it’s friendly and it’s competitive. And I think my colleagues would say the same thing.” With college athletics facing unprecedented times, Yormark believes that now isn’t the time for maintaining the status quo, remarking: “There are debates I’m going to win and there are debates I’m going to lose, but I always go back to what’s fair. I tell my ADs and anyone who will listen that we need to put progress over perfection. It’s not going to happen overnight. There are a lot of key stakeholders that have a seat at the table and it requires a lot of hard work to get a consensus. That’s why we’re all working so hard to get this right. … I understand what public perception might be, but I’m very, very confident in the position of the Big 12 right now. We’re performing at a high level and we’re investing at a high level. I really believe our better days are ahead.” (link)

The ACC and its creative partners at Wasserman have joined together to “develop two spots using bobbleheads of school mascots and cheerleaders to highlight their athletic, academic, and cultural traditions,” while helping give fans a sense of the league in a shifting college sports landscape, according to AdWeek’s Jason Notte. Wasserman CCO Danny Nunez: “As we took a look at just the landscape, we recognized that we have something that they necessarily don’t, which is culturally iconic marks that extend far beyond sport. When you look at the [North Carolina] Tar Heel, when you look at a [Wake Forest] Demon Deacon or a Miami Hurricane, and when you look at brands and culture—especially from a merch, streetwear, or a fashion play—when they go to license NCAA schools to do edition collegiate drops, they’re using ACC marks, so as we started to identify that within the culture, we said, ‘Wait a minute, we have something really special here.’” With the ACC planning to roll out the new “Accomplish Greatness” spots in Week 1 of football season on linear TV, digital and social media, Wasserman Executive Creative Director Dan Rozier notes that “with 18 different characters involved, it was necessary to collaborate with the various ACC schools” to make sure of proper mascot tone and demeanor. Rozier: “The good thing about bobbleheads is that it was a little bit of a cheat code in that they are so expressive just by nature, and their faces are very distinct. What’s nice is that you look at the Syracuse [Otto the] Orange, and you’re like, ‘I know how this guy talks,’ and you look at the Duke Blue Devil, and you’re like, ‘I can hear the voice of this man.’” (link)

Asked if the Longhorns football program might shy away from playing “tougher yet marquee non-conference games” in the future with contests already on the schedule against Ohio State (2026), Michigan (2027) and Notre Dame (2028, 2029), Texas AD Chris Del Conte says no, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis. Del Conte: “The brand of Texas, we owe it to college football to play this type of game. … I think with the discussions going around the CFP whether expansion or not, the regular season matters. Are we talking about the NFL opening games right now? No, they’re talking about Texas playing Ohio State, they’re talking about Alabama playing Florida State, Clemson playing LSU. Those games really set the tone for college. We’re not shying away from it. We want to preserve college football in the national landscape. Us not playing [Texas] A&M for a long time hurt college football. Nebraska not playing Oklahoma makes no sense to me. We’ve got to have those games, they’re important.” (link)

Meanwhile, USC has reportedly made an amended offer to extend its annual football series with Notre Dame for multiple years beyond this season, according to Trojans’ AD Jen Cohen, who tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje: “We’re trying to extend the series. This is an important series for us and for our fans and for our program, and hopefully we get to a resolution that supports that and is in the best interest of our program.” Negotiations remain ongoing, but Cohen says she is “really hopeful” that USC’s new offer, better accommodating Notre Dame’s preference of a long-term deal, would lead to an agreement “very soon.” The Trojans previously broached the possibility of moving the match-up to the first month of the season to better balance the demands of its future Big Ten-travel slate with Cohen noting that the date the game is contested is currently “the biggest issue” for USC in negotiations. Cohen: “It’s not very typical that a P4 school would travel back and forth across the country for a nonconference game in the middle of October. Show me who else is doing that and doing the kind of travel we’re doing. It’s a cool tradition to play at the end of the year, but then those are back-to-back rivalry games with a conference championship — and our opponent doesn’t play in a conference championship. They have a lot more flexibility in scheduling than we do. We’re in a bigger conference that doesn’t have the same level of ability to protect us in the way they schedule us for that type of game.” (link)

Michigan State AD J Batt tells the Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari that the Spartans are “going to be on the front edge” of generating additional revenue beyond NIL to support their student-athletes, remarking: “The first part is understanding what that means exactly, of what an above and beyond the cap fair market value, valid business purpose, NIL means. And so certainly, I've spent a lot of time understanding what that is. And we're going to be aggressive about working with Spartan Sports Marketing, PlayFly (our MMR partner), to help provide and find different opportunities for student athletes. We've moved kind of away from fundraising around collectives, and we are very focused on working with our MMR partner to provide opportunities.” On the potential of selling naming rights to Spartan Stadium and other on-campus athletic venues: “The changes in college athletics, like them or not, have created additional pressure on revenue. And so I think the 30,000-foot change that you've seen is that, because of that pressure, we've got to consider more things that potentially we may not have done in the past. And certainly naming rights of stadiums, fields, other opportunities to monetize, optimize, we will be looking at all of those. The key is, and you mention it, is that you've got to find the right intersection between the business terms of an opportunity and aligning those with the institutional values of your university. … I think it's when you find the right fit and the right partner, you would certainly consider it.” Much more. ➤ Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban has no interest in serving as a college football commissioner, telling the AP: “I don’t want to be in that briar patch of being a commissioner, but I do want to do everything I can to make it right.” Also from Saban: “For years and years and years as coaches, and when we were players, we learned this, we’re trying to create value for our future. Cal is in “respectable” financial shape heading into the 2025-26 athletic season, according to The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes the Bears declined to reveal the amounts raised but said donations already have exceeded the matching totals of $6M for football and $1.5M for men’s basketball. “Football coach Justin Wilcox has more than $12M available, and men’s basketball coach Mark Madsen has more than $3M to use. … That doesn’t mean Wilcox and Madsen will spend every last dollar before the transfer portal opens for each sport over the winter and spring – the uncertainty generated by the transfer portal creates a need for fiscal flexibility. But for each sport, the Bears seemingly have cleared the threshold required for success.” Asked how he would define football success in 2025, Bears GM Ron Rivera told reporters last week: “Anything that puts us in a solid bowl game – eight, nine wins. I think that’s what you’re looking for. That shows growth from last year. … We all know the clock’s ticking. There’s pressure to be successful, especially in today’s climate.” Wilner adds: “The cost of success in the post-modern era of major college football – of winning eight or nine games – is steeper than Tightwad Hill. But remarkably, the Bears seem to have it covered.” (link)

Are Power 4 schools required to book a liability for the House v. NCAA settlement back damages? The short answer is no, according to James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis, who explains: “The settlement obligation rests with the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences, who were named defendants in the lawsuit. Schools are not parties to the lawsuit and have no enforceable duty to fund it. Accounting standards for both public (GASB) and private (FASB) institutions define a liability as a present obligation of the reporting entity. Schools don't meet that definition. Practically, conferences will cover the settlement by reducing future distributions. That means schools see lower revenues later, not a payable today.” (link)

➤ Wisconsin has agreed to four new alcohol sponsorship deals ahead of the 2025 football season that include Blue Moon, Molson Coors (Coors Light), Constellation Brands (Modelo), Boston Beers (Truly and Twisted Tea) and AB InBev Brands (Nütrl vodka seltzer).
