Citing an unfolding ACC football scheduling debate, ESPN’s Pete Thamel inquires: “Does the ACC pivot to nine league games and an additional mandated game against a power conference school? Or, does the league stick with eight league games and a mandate of two games out-of-conference against power schools?” Thamel continues: “Obviously there’s four ACC teams with traditional in-state rivalry games. A complicating factor here is the Notre Dame agreement, which has ND playing five ACC games every year. Those aren’t league games. Those teams with the in-state game would then be playing 11 power games in the years they play Notre Dame. That’d be an exceedingly rare scheduling move, but it does happen occasionally. (There's also wonky math on a nine-game schedule in a 17-team league.). Per sources, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has been vocal within the room about playing 10 power conference games each season, which is not uniform among all leagues. There’s an in-person meeting in late September for the ACC to further discuss the options. Phillips called the meeting, which was not previously scheduled, and sources indicate there’s hope for direction then or soon after. There is also a wait-and-see option to see how things play out this season with the league’s new viewership revenue distribution model.” (link)

More from The Knight Report’s Richard O’Leary Q&A with new Rutgers AD Keli Zinn. On factors needed to make her first 100 days successful: “I’ve got to have my staff here and locked up and everybody knowing who they’re going to work with and what those expectations are. We need to be in a situation where we have a really solid infrastructure on third party name, image and likeness. And so that people can see that, feel that, know exactly what’s going to happen. Our athletes need to know what they can expect in that space. And also importantly, recruits need to be able to hear it. And so when they’re on campus, that’s got to be a focal point as to how that’s going to work. The other area surrounds the house settlement and our revenue share and our scholarship expectations. We’ve got to have that plan locked up and ready to go for them within the next hundred days. I think one of the things that may have been a little bit challenging for them this past year is some of that. Again, those decisions being made a little later in the game, certainly when you’re dealing with attrition and not having an AD present, that can create some challenges. But that’s not the case anymore. And so I’ve made a commitment to our coaches, knowing that recruiting is up on us for the upcoming year, that they will know where they’re at and know what they have to work with so that they can be most effective in recruiting and closing out the first semester here in a really good place for what that future looks like.” (link)

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Noah Furtado reports on Sacramento State’s “newfound swagger,” which for President Luke Wood has already proven to be worthwhile, remarking: “Our success, of course, is going to be determined upon when and how we become FBS. But no matter what, in terms of what this was all about, we have been successful. Because the whole point of this was to raise the visibility of the institution. And there’s no question that we’ve succeeded in doing that.” Furtado goes on to observe that “Sacramento State has committed to a floor of $2.5 million to $3 million in revenue-shared funds to be distributed to athletes” and that the “figure remains fluid and could grow in accordance with increased ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and the like.” After a string of coaching hires including “cool, cowboy-hatted” Football HC Brennan Marion, former Sacramento Kings point guard/Men’s Basketball HC Mike Bibby and NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who's foregoing a salary to serve as Men’s Basketball GM, Furtado writes that the school has experienced a “level of financial support unlike anything the university has ever witnessed” with AD Mark Orr highlighting that football ticket sales were up 65% from last season – in July. For Wood, it’s now about seeing what those big moves and big bucks can produce, commenting: “We got to win. You can bring in an amazing coach, you can bring in amazing players, you can raise money, but nobody cares about it unless you win.” (link)

The Fresno Bee’s Robert Kuwada reports Fresno State will clear about $400K in revenue from last month’s sold out Shakira concert off concessions sales, parking and premium seating from 22 suites at Valley Children’s Stadium. The revenue generated, which also included a facility rental fee and a cut of merchandising sales, provides a financial boost for a department playing catch-up in both sport operating budgets and revenue sharing. Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “I don’t know what I was expecting out of it, but as we got closer to it and looking at the attendance 10 days out, I’m happy with the $400,000. The reality is, if we can get a few of these a year that’s going to be really helpful. It doesn’t close the entire gap, but it gets us closer. There’s upside to greater revenue in the future.” (link)

Northwestern Football HC David Braun says he & Tulane HC Jon Sumrall connected yesterday in regards to reports of the Wildcats refusing to wear white uniforms so the Green Wave could don the same fit worn immediately after Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago. Braun: “Certainly not a gesture of disrespect, but the timing of the request did impact our ability to honor the request. [...] I don't pretend to understand what the city of New Orleans has been through, but what I can tell you is this university and myself have a tremendous amount of respect for the impact that Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans and that region.” (link)

Could the likes of FanDuel or DraftKings become the “official sportsbook” of the SEC or Big Ten? Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey questions whether the rise of player injury and availability reports will eventually create more business opportunities and revenue in college football, with Rumsey observing that with every Power 4 school now releasing such information, “it could only be a matter of time before data companies come on board to start purchasing and distributing pertinent betting metrics to sportsbooks.” With the NCAA’s recent deal with Genius Sports “to start allowing sportsbooks to purchase official data feeds from NCAA championships, including March Madness, and use official NCAA marks and logos,” and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips mentioning that “the gambling and sports wagering landscape has blown up in a way where you see it everywhere now, and it’s really expected,” Rumsey opines that “the new era of college sports opens the door for top betting brands - a move that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.” (link)

While the transfer portal continues to dominate men’s basketball roster construction and high-major coaches increasingly value proven production and narrower risk profiles, The College Front Office’s Noah Henderson notes: “By contrast, blue-chip high school recruits…are also commanding seven-figure packages, but risk tolerance for freshmen is shrinking – unless they’re generational. The result: undervalued prep recruits have become a cost-efficient differentiator, with some schools offering multiyear deals to provide developmental runway and roster continuity. … As high-major teams get older and more experienced, programs increasingly cannot provide an expectation of playing time to freshmen. A multiyear contract allows a grace period to come in and grow in the program without the financial pressures of contributing right away. For high-majors, recruiting freshmen on multiyear deals allows for a commitment to development, the ability to mitigate risk on high upside athletes, the potential to lock a high usage player to a team-friendly deal (if only for a year), and generate greater roster continuity. Players who exceed expectations will provide value on cheap deals while freeing up budget space for teams to spend, or even overspend, on their desired transfer talent or blue-chip freshman prospects. Prep recruits who don’t pan out in a two-year window won’t be a massive financial burden to a budget.” (link)

The Tennessean’s Alaina Morris details Vanderbilt’s work to ready Memorial Gymnasium as the new Women’s Volleyball program’s home, with the first match set for Friday. The gym’s unique “stage” setup and lack of air conditioning has been cause for concern, but the Commodores have addressed both. There is a climate control system in place that, while not an air conditioning unit, is designed to “take off the brunt of the hot gym.” The benches, which for basketball sit on the baseline, will be pushed to the corners. As for the safety concerns, the NCAA has granted a rule that play will be dead if the ball goes off of the playing surface, with no additional protection in place where the court drops off. (link)

Army West Point football student-athlete Larry Pickett Jr., and his father Larry Pickett Sr., have earned praise for their “heroic” and “selfless” actions early Sunday morning after video surfaced of the duo pulling a man from a crashed car just before it burst into flames, according to an Associated Press report. Returning to West Point after a family dinner in New York City’s Times Square, the Picketts happened upon the car that had crashed into a utility pole on Route 9W in Fort Montgomery, NY, pulled the man from the wreck and remained with him until first responders arrived on the scene. Pickett Sr.: “Just after midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it. With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate. There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action. We pulled him out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there.” Army AD Tom Theodorakis weighed in on the incident, observing that the Picketts’ conduct is “exactly what we strive to develop ... leadership, courage, and selfless service. Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father exemplify the values we hold dear, stepping up in a moment of crisis to save a life. Proud to see these traits in action, on and off the fields of friendly strife. Count the brave.” (link, link); Video of the incident. (link)

The Athletic’s Zach Powell reports that Florida State linebacker Ethan Pritchard was shot just before 10 p.m. ET Sunday night and hospitalized in intensive care after being wounded inside a vehicle at an apartment complex 15 miles northwest of Tallahassee in Havana, Fla. Per Powell, “Pritchard was visiting family and was driving a family member home when his car was shot at by someone who had allegedly mistaken his car for someone else’s vehicle.” He was transported via ambulance to a local hospital and treated shortly after suffering the wound with FSU issuing a Monday morning statement noting that Pritchard remains in "critical but stable” condition with further updates to be provided. No additional details on the shooting have been released and an Investigation into the incident remains ongoing. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker sat down with the Blue & Gold News for a wide-ranging interview. Baker: “I believe that hiring quality coaches is the most important thing we do as athletic directors. Each search is different, but what we strive for the most in each search is thoroughness. That’s the most important thing we can do when conducting a search. We have a lot of young people who depend on good leadership, not just for their athletic abilities but for the life lessons they’re learning for life well beyond sports. That thoroughness really starts with a deep understanding of what has made our program successful when it’s been successful, and what has made it struggle when it’s struggled, and what you need currently in a changing landscape. From there, you determine what profiles best fit.” Baker adds: “In this state, a coach represents so much more than just a head coach. They represent the institution, of course, but they also represent the entire state. They occupy some of the most high-profile spaces in the state, and we want them to represent the state of West Virginia the way we want it represented.” Baker has had to replace both basketball coaches, baseball and football, among others, since taking over in December of 2022. On the hire of Football HC Rich Rodriguez, who previously served in the role for the Mountaineers from 2001-07: “What I had to do in this one was block out the possibility that the sequel may not be as good as the first movie. Those expectations may be out of whack because people may expect he will duplicate his first run. Of course, there were emotions from his first stint. I can look anyone in the eye, though, and say we went through a thorough search.” (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson Q&As with OwlsDaily, starting with thoughts on the recent downsizing of his department: “Anytime you have to make changes it's extremely difficult. It becomes even more difficult when obviously the decisions that we had to make didn't have anything to do with their performance. All really great people. We just had to make some decisions that it came down to a number and just had to evaluate our entire staff and move forward with what I thought were the best decisions, not decisions that I wanted to make, but leadership requires you to make some decisions sometimes, and those decisions are not always easy.” As for revenue share splits per sport: “We kind of follow the same lines that the (House) settlement did. The numbers may not be exact, but you can think about how that breakdown might look. And then each sport has a chance to raise more money to increase it. So I don't want to say we're 75-15-5-5, like the settlement on the back pay. But it's similar type lines. But those numbers can change based on the fundraising that comes into play with the Competitive Excellence Funds.” (link)

“We know what we stand for and at a time where there’s a lot of chaos in college athletics and change — and much of it needed to happen, and much of it’s been very, very positive — knowing who you are, what you stand for, what your goals are, is a distinct advantage. We’ve also had the advantage because while we don’t have football revenues, we don’t have football expenses either … So we’ve been able to be thoughtful. And as we looked at that landscape, we are by no means intimidated by NIL. We are not intimidated by revenue sharing. We understand it’s going to be an element of our future success.” That’s Denver AD Josh Berlo as the Pioneers are planning strategically for success in Men’s Hockey given new industry constraints & opportunities. Opendorse co-Founder Blake Lawrence provides Men’s Hockey context: “Half a million dollars in rev share budget can build a team that can get to the Frozen Four. If you’re spending six figures a year on your men’s hockey program for rev share payments or NIL deals … you’re outspending 80% of the market. At the end of the day, in our data set, there aren’t million-dollar men’s ice hockey budgets floating around the country. It’s few and far between.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini took to X to apologize to fans for the livestream issues during the second half of the Sun Devils football game against Northern Arizona on Saturday, which streamed exclusively on ESPN+ and ESPN’s new app. Rossini: “Hey guys - fully aware that the live stream is out. Very sorry for this and rest assured we are in touch with the Big 12 and ESPN on this issue. We have to be better for our fans and our program. I do apologize.” Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner: “It appears that the issues were on-site and not related to the infrastructure of ESPN’s new app, as concurrent events were not experiencing any difficulties.” (link)

As part of their Program Builders series, The Athletic’s Brendan Marks and Ralph Russo question whether new North Carolina HC Bill Belichick can change the “Carolina Way” when it comes to football. For Chancellor Lee Roberts, who spearheaded the much-discussed hire back in December, it was all about trying to find more success in a sport where the Tarheels have “one double-digit-win season in the past quarter century and no discernible football footprint.” Roberts: “To be candid. I feel as though football wasn’t really where we wanted it to be.” Enter the six-time Super Bowl winner and NFL coaching legend, who has arrived on campus and ignited a firestorm of excitement throughout Chapel Hill heading into the Tarheels’ Labor Day match-up against TCU. AD Bubba Cunningham: “When you hire somebody like Bill — or not somebody like Bill, you hire Bill — it just says, hey, we’re making a statement. Now let’s make it work. … We’ve always out-performed our resources. But the table stakes for participation are rising, and we’ve always wanted to be elite and competitive — and so this is the next step.” Per Marks and Russo, Belichick has “helped UNC move forward from a conservative past. Field logos and jersey patches may be coming, not to mention a potential naming rights deal for Kenan Stadium. … He is becoming, as UNC hoped, the most famous ambassador Tar Heels football has had in quite some time — if not ever … [and] the past nine months have proven that Belichick, already, has fundamentally changed the way North Carolina wants to operate. He was the only potential hire who could galvanize the entire UNC universe, and he has — even if the Tar Heels are still figuring out how to ride their new trajectory.” UNC Deputy AD/CRO Rick Barakat: “That’s indicative of the impact of the Belichick hire. … We’re the only one that’s got Bill Belichick. We’re the only one that has a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach.” (link)

More on tonight’s matchup, this time from TCU’s vantage point as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Matthew Adams writes that there’s pressure on the Horned Frogs to leverage all the extra attention that will come along with its high-profile football season opener against North Carolina. TCU Senior Deputy AD for External Affairs & Revenue Generation Ryan Peck: “There’s the potential for a huge viewership number. One of the biggest questions is what does the Bill Belichick factor do?” Highlighting the similarities between this year's match-up against Belichick’s UNC team and the 2023 season-opening contest against HC Deion Sanders, who was making his Colorado coaching debut, Adams notes that TCU hopes all the extra attention will lead to “increased website traffic, increased social media engagements and increased brand recognition, in addition to ticket sales and merchandise sales.” Peck remarks: “Opportunities like this let us punch a little above our weight. … When things like this happen, you may not see an impact for a year, but it all gets us where we want to go.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, have applied to trademark the term “Gold Digger” to use on jewelry and keychains, according to Sportico’s Jason Clinkscales, who adds their company, TCE Rights Management LLC, filed 17 different trademarks, including phrases associated with Belichick such as “Chapel Bill,” “Belestrator” and “The Belichick Way.” Others include “Trail of Salty Tears” and “No Days Off.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel explains to The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb why the Wolverines would consider wearing jersey patches: "We already do that. We do that when we go to bowl games. We proudly wear the 'Rose Bowl presented by AT&T' on our jersey. We did it when we went down to play the game in Dallas when we played Alabama – I think we wore a jersey patch symbolizing that game. Would I consider that? Yeah. I mean, it's significant revenue. It's something that I would take a look at if the rule changed that we were allowed to put jersey patches on our jersey similar to what they do in professional leagues now." (link)

On the latest episode of the Career Hustle, College.town’s Kristen Eargle sits down with Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis, who discusses his journey from his college days as Miami (FL)’s mascot to working outside of the business and eventually to Statesboro. Davis shares what advice he received from his former boss, Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, and what's been the biggest change since going from Deputy AD to AD. One lesson Davis has learned and shares with others is “just because you do A, B and C doesn’t mean D, E and F are going to follow. Commit to your journey. It is absolutely excellent to learn from other people. And it should be a very important thing because you need to learn from other people and, typically speaking, it repeats itself. So it’s important to be able to understand where people came from, how their journey happens.” Davis recalls Bjork informing him while they were both at Miami to maintain relationships even though Davis was, at the time, leaving the industry. “I think that’s paramount no matter where you’re at. He was true to his word and said when you get back in, you need to go either development or multimedia rights and be on that track. And I trusted him, I appreciated his advice, and I went on this track in the multimedia rights space.” Davis also points out that he said no to opportunities along the way “because I just felt like I was around really good people that provided a really healthy environment. Could I chase another title and maybe make a little more money at the time? Potentially. But I put a lot of value in people and a lot of value in the environment.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

More from Florida State Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins in a town hall with Warchant. Collins on those who oppose donating to pay student-athletes: “At the end of the day, you're either a fan and you want to help or you're just a detractor. And I see the boards, they get tired of people being detractors and I don't like detractors. … So if you're not a booster or if you're not helping monetarily, I would just ask that you rethink that and not everybody's a million-dollar donor or half-a-million dollars or $5K donor. There's a reason why we have donor levels at $70 and $500. I would just ask people to consider that. We have over 400K living alumni and less than 5% are annual members of the boosters. … Think if you doubled that. Think if you just got 10% of the living alumni to be boosters at some level. Think of the power of that and that I think people lose sight of. And I would just ask you all to reconsider your position on that if you're not a donor.” (link)

Inside Carolina profiles North Carolina Men’s Basketball student-athlete Seth Trimble, who owns the Ben & Jerry’s franchise on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Trimble, who at 21 is the youngest owner of a B&J franchise in company history, bought it from Tarheels alum/Primo Partners CEO Antonio McBroom. Trimble: “I’ve just always had the idea of growing and continuing to expand and show who I am outside of the basketball court. And this is an example of showing it now, but I’ve always had that vision. I know the ball doesn’t dribble forever. I know that as a human being, I’m allowed to have many interests in life. Basketball is the thing that I crave the most. It’s what I love to do, but there are things that I also want to explore, and that’s the business world, that’s entrepreneurship. That’s just seeing what I can do and how successful I can be in these other fields.” Lots more in this cool story. (link)
