The AAC covered several topics during its in-person meetings in Vail, Colorado, last week, including the league’s distribution pool for members, which increased by more than 17% from the approved FY23 budget. The league’s operating expenses were once again lower than projected. AAC ADs also approved an adjustment to the conference's football medical observer policies. Beginning with the 2023 season, medical replay capabilities will be available to both sidelines. The ADs also signed off on a set of minimum standards for television productions in soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and lacrosse on the ESPN+ platform. Commissioner Aresco: “Although college athletics faces unprecedented challenges in this transitional period, I am confident that those challenges will be met and a sustainable model will emerge that preserves and enhances what makes college sports special. … Our institutions are steadfast in their commitment to keeping The American in the upper tier of Division I conferences.” More from the AAC. Kentucky AD Barnhart explains UK’s position on retaining an eight-game conference football slate: “At Kentucky, we have scheduled to our strength and to our depth and trying to maintain student-athlete health. We know there are times when our depth might not be as as much as others and we want to make sure we have the ability to see our way through a 12-game season and a bowl game. … I resent when people say we're scheduling just to get to a bowl. That's not true. We're scheduling to try and win a championship. We're trying to put ourselves in a position to make a run at it. Ultimately, to get to New Year's Day bowl games and to have an opportunity to play for in the College Football Playoff is a goal of our players. So we have always scheduled what we think is intelligently for our program.” Additionally, the eight-game schedule gives UK, “on occasion, eight home football games, which is incredibly important to the revenue of our program. So we've been able to check that box. We've been able to check the box to protect and hopefully give our young people an ability to stay healthy throughout the season. And we've checked the box in terms of the strength to schedule and the ability to pursue postseason football for us.” (link)

Connecticut Football HC Mora insists his goal at UConn is to win a national championship: “In the NFL, I didn't achieve my ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl. I got very close but didn't ever get it done. That bothers me. At this level, I understand where we're sitting right now. People will look at that statement and say, 'He's a fool. Can't win a national championship at UConn.' Well, I have to believe that, ultimately. I'm not talking about this year. But we can. And that's what I'm working towards. Otherwise, I wouldn't do this.” Can the Huskies do it as an independent? “No,” according to Mora, who identifies Notre Dame as the only independent with a shot to win it all in football. “Eventually, I would love, from a football standpoint, for us to be a Power Five program. … I'm ignorant to some of that [complexities of leaving the Big East due to fit and basketball reasons]. So I just see it through the glass of the head football coach that says he wants to be in a Power Five conference and compete for a championship. But I know this: It's not up to me.” (link)

NIL Today…
+ SANIL Co-Founder/CEO Belzer tells SBJ’s Smith that if collectives don’t provide something in return for donors’ contributions – whether it’s content, meet-and-greets, keepsakes or something else – they won’t be sustainable. SANIL-supported collectives, Belzer adds, typically adhere to some basic principles. The local collective, for example, will buy an official sponsorship from the school’s multimedia rights holder, thereby gaining the ability to use the school’s marks and logos in promotions while also promoting the collective on video boards and radio broadcasts. Perhaps most importantly, though, the collective can then promote itself as the official partner of the school, which can be particularly important in a crowded marketplace. (link)
+ A group of collectives supporting Power 5 institutions will travel to Washington, D.C., this week to make their case for a federal NIL standard, per On3’s Nakos, who adds: “Tennessee‘s Spyre Sports and Ole Miss‘ Grove Collective have organized the group, which also includes Clemson‘s TigerImpact, Georgia‘s Classic City Collective and Washington‘s Montlake Futures. The trip to Capitol Hill coincides with the University of Arizona’s Future of College Sports summit, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday.” Guests for that event include NCAA President Baker, ACC Commissioner Phillips and SEC Commissioner Sankey. Nakos notes the collectives will have guaranteed time with lawmakers during a three-hour, open-house reception at the Capitol. In a statement to On3, the collectives say they are “eager to engage in worthwhile conversations around these topics with regard to how revenue will be distributed in the future.” (link)

The Atlantic East Conference (DIII) is adding women’s flag football as a varsity sport with the expectation of starting competition in 2025. The sport is being launched through a partnership with the NFL and RCX Sports, along with support from the Philadelphia Eagles. AEC Commissioner Huntley: “Establishing women’s flag football has been a great honor for us, and I am so excited to provide this opportunity for female athletes around the country. The ever-growing high school ranks make this a valuable step for our schools and the commitment to future growth with our athletic programs and women’s sports.” Five of the AEC’s seven institutions — Centenary, Cabrini, Immaculata, Marymount, and Neumann — will take part in the inaugural season, and before beginning varsity play, the schools plan to offer club flag football with weekend tournaments in 2024. Speaking of which, Flag Football continues to make major inroads with girls and women, as NFL EVP of Football Operations Vincent points out that “around 474K young women between the ages of 6 and 17 played flag last year — a massive 63% increase from 2019. However, Vincent notes the available opportunities are failing to keep pace with the demand, as the 15,716 girls who played varsity high school flag football in 2021-22 represent just a fraction of the female flag participants under the age of 17. While adoption at the NAIA level has increased access and more than 100 NCAA schools having expressed interest in starting programs, Vincent says the NFL is all in on supporting the game’s growth and calls on others to do so as well. “Leaders across sectors — working in state government, athletics associations, high schools and higher education — should consider how they can expand access to flag football, which girls have made clear is a sport of choice. … Thinking globally, our priorities include starting scholarship programs for internationally-born women to attend U.S. colleges, receiving an education while playing flag. The league also is working with the International Federation of American Football to expand elite competition on every continent.” (link)
