West Virginia AD Wren Baker sat down with the Blue & Gold News for a wide-ranging interview. Baker: “I believe that hiring quality coaches is the most important thing we do as athletic directors. Each search is different, but what we strive for the most in each search is thoroughness. That’s the most important thing we can do when conducting a search. We have a lot of young people who depend on good leadership, not just for their athletic abilities but for the life lessons they’re learning for life well beyond sports. That thoroughness really starts with a deep understanding of what has made our program successful when it’s been successful, and what has made it struggle when it’s struggled, and what you need currently in a changing landscape. From there, you determine what profiles best fit.” Baker adds: “In this state, a coach represents so much more than just a head coach. They represent the institution, of course, but they also represent the entire state. They occupy some of the most high-profile spaces in the state, and we want them to represent the state of West Virginia the way we want it represented.” Baker has had to replace both basketball coaches, baseball and football, among others, since taking over in December of 2022. On the hire of Football HC Rich Rodriguez, who previously served in the role for the Mountaineers from 2001-07: “What I had to do in this one was block out the possibility that the sequel may not be as good as the first movie. Those expectations may be out of whack because people may expect he will duplicate his first run. Of course, there were emotions from his first stint. I can look anyone in the eye, though, and say we went through a thorough search.” (link)

Temple AD Arthur Johnson Q&As with OwlsDaily, starting with thoughts on the recent downsizing of his department: “Anytime you have to make changes it's extremely difficult. It becomes even more difficult when obviously the decisions that we had to make didn't have anything to do with their performance. All really great people. We just had to make some decisions that it came down to a number and just had to evaluate our entire staff and move forward with what I thought were the best decisions, not decisions that I wanted to make, but leadership requires you to make some decisions sometimes, and those decisions are not always easy.” As for revenue share splits per sport: “We kind of follow the same lines that the (House) settlement did. The numbers may not be exact, but you can think about how that breakdown might look. And then each sport has a chance to raise more money to increase it. So I don't want to say we're 75-15-5-5, like the settlement on the back pay. But it's similar type lines. But those numbers can change based on the fundraising that comes into play with the Competitive Excellence Funds.” (link)

“We know what we stand for and at a time where there’s a lot of chaos in college athletics and change — and much of it needed to happen, and much of it’s been very, very positive — knowing who you are, what you stand for, what your goals are, is a distinct advantage. We’ve also had the advantage because while we don’t have football revenues, we don’t have football expenses either … So we’ve been able to be thoughtful. And as we looked at that landscape, we are by no means intimidated by NIL. We are not intimidated by revenue sharing. We understand it’s going to be an element of our future success.” That’s Denver AD Josh Berlo as the Pioneers are planning strategically for success in Men’s Hockey given new industry constraints & opportunities. Opendorse co-Founder Blake Lawrence provides Men’s Hockey context: “Half a million dollars in rev share budget can build a team that can get to the Frozen Four. If you’re spending six figures a year on your men’s hockey program for rev share payments or NIL deals … you’re outspending 80% of the market. At the end of the day, in our data set, there aren’t million-dollar men’s ice hockey budgets floating around the country. It’s few and far between.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini took to X to apologize to fans for the livestream issues during the second half of the Sun Devils football game against Northern Arizona on Saturday, which streamed exclusively on ESPN+ and ESPN’s new app. Rossini: “Hey guys - fully aware that the live stream is out. Very sorry for this and rest assured we are in touch with the Big 12 and ESPN on this issue. We have to be better for our fans and our program. I do apologize.” Awful Announcing’s Drew Lerner: “It appears that the issues were on-site and not related to the infrastructure of ESPN’s new app, as concurrent events were not experiencing any difficulties.” (link)

As part of their Program Builders series, The Athletic’s Brendan Marks and Ralph Russo question whether new North Carolina HC Bill Belichick can change the “Carolina Way” when it comes to football. For Chancellor Lee Roberts, who spearheaded the much-discussed hire back in December, it was all about trying to find more success in a sport where the Tarheels have “one double-digit-win season in the past quarter century and no discernible football footprint.” Roberts: “To be candid. I feel as though football wasn’t really where we wanted it to be.” Enter the six-time Super Bowl winner and NFL coaching legend, who has arrived on campus and ignited a firestorm of excitement throughout Chapel Hill heading into the Tarheels’ Labor Day match-up against TCU. AD Bubba Cunningham: “When you hire somebody like Bill — or not somebody like Bill, you hire Bill — it just says, hey, we’re making a statement. Now let’s make it work. … We’ve always out-performed our resources. But the table stakes for participation are rising, and we’ve always wanted to be elite and competitive — and so this is the next step.” Per Marks and Russo, Belichick has “helped UNC move forward from a conservative past. Field logos and jersey patches may be coming, not to mention a potential naming rights deal for Kenan Stadium. … He is becoming, as UNC hoped, the most famous ambassador Tar Heels football has had in quite some time — if not ever … [and] the past nine months have proven that Belichick, already, has fundamentally changed the way North Carolina wants to operate. He was the only potential hire who could galvanize the entire UNC universe, and he has — even if the Tar Heels are still figuring out how to ride their new trajectory.” UNC Deputy AD/CRO Rick Barakat: “That’s indicative of the impact of the Belichick hire. … We’re the only one that’s got Bill Belichick. We’re the only one that has a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach.” (link)

More on tonight’s matchup, this time from TCU’s vantage point as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Matthew Adams writes that there’s pressure on the Horned Frogs to leverage all the extra attention that will come along with its high-profile football season opener against North Carolina. TCU Senior Deputy AD for External Affairs & Revenue Generation Ryan Peck: “There’s the potential for a huge viewership number. One of the biggest questions is what does the Bill Belichick factor do?” Highlighting the similarities between this year's match-up against Belichick’s UNC team and the 2023 season-opening contest against HC Deion Sanders, who was making his Colorado coaching debut, Adams notes that TCU hopes all the extra attention will lead to “increased website traffic, increased social media engagements and increased brand recognition, in addition to ticket sales and merchandise sales.” Peck remarks: “Opportunities like this let us punch a little above our weight. … When things like this happen, you may not see an impact for a year, but it all gets us where we want to go.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, have applied to trademark the term “Gold Digger” to use on jewelry and keychains, according to Sportico’s Jason Clinkscales, who adds their company, TCE Rights Management LLC, filed 17 different trademarks, including phrases associated with Belichick such as “Chapel Bill,” “Belestrator” and “The Belichick Way.” Others include “Trail of Salty Tears” and “No Days Off.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel explains to The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb why the Wolverines would consider wearing jersey patches: "We already do that. We do that when we go to bowl games. We proudly wear the 'Rose Bowl presented by AT&T' on our jersey. We did it when we went down to play the game in Dallas when we played Alabama – I think we wore a jersey patch symbolizing that game. Would I consider that? Yeah. I mean, it's significant revenue. It's something that I would take a look at if the rule changed that we were allowed to put jersey patches on our jersey similar to what they do in professional leagues now." (link)

On the latest episode of the Career Hustle, College.town’s Kristen Eargle sits down with Georgia Southern AD Chris Davis, who discusses his journey from his college days as Miami (FL)’s mascot to working outside of the business and eventually to Statesboro. Davis shares what advice he received from his former boss, Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, and what's been the biggest change since going from Deputy AD to AD. One lesson Davis has learned and shares with others is “just because you do A, B and C doesn’t mean D, E and F are going to follow. Commit to your journey. It is absolutely excellent to learn from other people. And it should be a very important thing because you need to learn from other people and, typically speaking, it repeats itself. So it’s important to be able to understand where people came from, how their journey happens.” Davis recalls Bjork informing him while they were both at Miami to maintain relationships even though Davis was, at the time, leaving the industry. “I think that’s paramount no matter where you’re at. He was true to his word and said when you get back in, you need to go either development or multimedia rights and be on that track. And I trusted him, I appreciated his advice, and I went on this track in the multimedia rights space.” Davis also points out that he said no to opportunities along the way “because I just felt like I was around really good people that provided a really healthy environment. Could I chase another title and maybe make a little more money at the time? Potentially. But I put a lot of value in people and a lot of value in the environment.” Full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

More from Florida State Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins in a town hall with Warchant. Collins on those who oppose donating to pay student-athletes: “At the end of the day, you're either a fan and you want to help or you're just a detractor. And I see the boards, they get tired of people being detractors and I don't like detractors. … So if you're not a booster or if you're not helping monetarily, I would just ask that you rethink that and not everybody's a million-dollar donor or half-a-million dollars or $5K donor. There's a reason why we have donor levels at $70 and $500. I would just ask people to consider that. We have over 400K living alumni and less than 5% are annual members of the boosters. … Think if you doubled that. Think if you just got 10% of the living alumni to be boosters at some level. Think of the power of that and that I think people lose sight of. And I would just ask you all to reconsider your position on that if you're not a donor.” (link)

AdAge’s Jon Springer reports Keurig Dr. Pepper is utilizing the renewal of its college football partnership with Disney Advertising to test data-driven ad strategies and AI-enabled marketing by bringing Dr Pepper’s “Fansville” franchise directly into college football game broadcasts using mixed reality, while also dicing its ad content for delivery to fans based on precision targeting. The soft drink brand is also supporting the commercial-free hour of “The Pat McAfee Show,” to help strengthen its college football ties to Disney and ESPN. (link)

Inside Carolina profiles North Carolina Men’s Basketball student-athlete Seth Trimble, who owns the Ben & Jerry’s franchise on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Trimble, who at 21 is the youngest owner of a B&J franchise in company history, bought it from Tarheels alum/Primo Partners CEO Antonio McBroom. Trimble: “I’ve just always had the idea of growing and continuing to expand and show who I am outside of the basketball court. And this is an example of showing it now, but I’ve always had that vision. I know the ball doesn’t dribble forever. I know that as a human being, I’m allowed to have many interests in life. Basketball is the thing that I crave the most. It’s what I love to do, but there are things that I also want to explore, and that’s the business world, that’s entrepreneurship. That’s just seeing what I can do and how successful I can be in these other fields.” Lots more in this cool story. (link)

Oklahoma President Joe Harroz with some updates to On3’s Sooner Sports on the AD search in Norman, starts by referencing John Donahoe’s hire at Stanford: “One thing I think people struggle with is how to recognize and react to change? So I think the move where you go and get the former Nike CEO — he’s got a big background as well. To me, you always start with what is the environment today? Not what did it used to be — what is it today? What’s the same? And what’s different? When we went out and got the first true pro-style general manager, people were like, really? I think everybody knows the answer, but it’s hard to recognize and act on it because it’s so different. Same thing on moving to the SEC. We first acted, but it may not have made sense to a lot of people. But after we did it, other folks moved. [...] As we look at what this next iteration, this next move of athletics directors looks like, it does have — they have to understand the Olympic sports, they have to understand those things, but there is this element of you’ve got to raise revenue. You’ve got to generate new revenue. And you have to adapt to an environment that has a massive pro component. One sport makes money. Every other sport loses money. So how do you make sure you drive (revenue) — especially at a time that the direction it’s going is uncertain? We’re looking at four buckets. One of those would be that sort of CEO that you’ve seen out there. The other would be sports business. Other one would be sports marketing and media. And are there superstar ADs out there that make sense in this environment and there clearly are. So we’re looking at all four of those.” (link)

Ahead of yesterday’s game at Clemson, LSU AD Scott Woodward commented on future scheduling practices: “When I came here, I kind of inherited the schedule. I wouldn’t have put coach (Brian) Kelly in the situation of playing great programs like we’ve played coming out of the chute. We’re going to continue to play Power 4 games, but I think I would’ve been a little lenient on the Week 1 games and probably would’ve thought about Week 0 games or the like, and I think it’s gonna be a way of smartly scheduling.” For context, the Tigers had not won a season opener since 2019. That year, they beat Georgia Southern at home 55-3 to begin their run to a national title. Each of the five seasons LSU has played since has begun with a loss to a power-conference team: Mississippi State (2020), UCLA (2021), Florida State (2022 and 2023) and Southern Cal (2024). (link)

With Colorado State set to join the Pac-12 next summer, Rams AD John Weber shared his thoughts on the future of the league in a recent appearance on Ram Nation Radio Podcast: “The goal is certainly to gain autonomous status back for the Pac-12. We are absolutely focused and working hard with all of our new member institutions and the conference itself (to make that happen). I’m not going to rest until Colorado State earns a power designation. And a lot of people have heard me say, ‘By every measure, Colorado State is a power school.’ We have 270,000 alumni. We have nearly 34,000 kids on campus, highly-ranked academics, R1 research institution, phenomenal city, great facilities, it’s all there. We’ve got to go prove things in athletics to hold up our end of the bargain, but it is all there. And honestly, that’s also assuming that the concept of autonomy or power status actually means something going forward. And it may very well not. At the end of the day, what we really want to preserve is access to competing at the highest level. That is the most important thing.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay headliner & tuxedo-clad Lee Corso was rightly celebrated & commemorated throughout his final appearance on the show yesterday. Here’s the clip of his final pick, which was the same as his very first back in 1996… the Ohio State Buckeyes. (link); Corso’s sidekick, Kirk Herbstreit, narrated a touching intro before Corso’s final pick with a great line of, “Choosing to surround yourself with the right people and choosing to treat those people right.” (link); Here’s a much longer piece shown yesterday on Corso’s headgear tradition. (link); Fox also got in the act of toasting Corso as former ESPNer Tom Rinaldi handled the duties. (link)

Southland Commissioner Chris Grant joins the FCS Football Talk podcast with Hero Sports’ Sam Herder and touches on current and future membership: “Coming into this year, stability is everything, and we finally have that. We’re singing from the same hymnal, all 12 members, even our non-football members. … Right now today we’re good at 12 and we’re going to celebrate our 12, get back to doing our business as a conference. We’re starting to get schedules in place and finally have those out for the next four or five years.” Grant adds of the league’s trajectory: “It is not the same Southland Conference that we had back in 2021. I like to think we’re more of a thriving brand. … We obviously have to be cognizant that we're putting the best games on and that it's compelling content. And so we want that. And from a student-athlete standpoint, ensuring that we're providing and not getting away from that amateurism.” (link)

On August 17, Tulane requested to wear white jerseys, the same ones the Green Wave wore in 2005 in its first game after Hurricane Katrina, but Northwestern denied the request. Tulane Football HC Jon Sumrall: “When you disrespect the city of New Orleans, you’re going to run into it. … I’m not trying to be a jerk but don’t disrespect the City of New Orleans.” Tulane defeated Northwestern 23-3 yesterday. The request was made “well after such uniform changes are normally made,” per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. The Wildcats had already set up jerseys and decals, effectively, according to a source, “moving an entire program all the way down to New Orleans." (link)

“As the old saying goes, you’ve either been fired or you’re about to be fired.” That’s an anonymous coach bluntly talking to Hero Sports’ KC Smurthwaite in reference to a coaching “hot seat” that never really cools off. The coach continues: “I know we need to win. I hear the chatter. My wife knows it, my kids know it. They hear it at school too, which as a parent is the worst. I love some of our returners and what we got in the portal, but we just need to stay healthy. I think we’ll get there.” Smurthwaite points out that the “hot seat” is “stressful for coaches, their families, and administrators balancing budgets, politics, and pressure.” It’s stressful for ADs, who are forced to decide whether to extend a coach or start what can often be an exhausting and time-consuming replacement search. In the case of a firing, it can also serve as an admission of failure by the AD, especially if the coach was one of their hires. An anonymous AD currently dealing with a coach under pressure as well as another staring down the final year of his deal told Smurthwaite: “Look, the reality is the last few years we haven’t gotten it done on the (football) field. Coach is great with fans, donors, and season ticket holders, but it’s just not working out. I like our team this year and hope we can turn it around, sh*t, I pray we turn it around. … Coaching searches look exciting. But they really do suck. They drain you, they eat up your time, and once you make the hire, you have to make sure your new coach feels comfortable, has the resources, and gets their needs met, especially if they’re your guy.” (link)

The Pomp Show’s Joe Pompliano points out that Everton's new $1B stadium is officially the loudest in the Premier League after hitting 126 decibels on Sunday. “Despite being the league's seventh largest stadium, Everton accomplished this through a unique design trick. The seats sit at a 35-degree angle – the maximum allowed by law – and then the sound redirects off the overhang back onto the field. … This engineering trick is becoming increasingly common across professional sports. Everton got the idea from Tottenham, but the Seattle Seahawks have used the same design to make Lumen Field one of the NFL’s loudest venues. And the Buffalo Bills will now have it in their new stadium, too.” Pompliano also shares other features of the stadium, including automated beer-pouring machines and grab-and-go concessions. Have a look inside the new Hill Dickinson Stadium. (link)

The consensus of the NFL’s inclusion of private equity so far is the “move has been a resounding success, even if the number of private-equity deals has been surprisingly light,” according to Sportico’s Brendan Coffey. Haynes Boone sports law chair Errol Brown, whose firm has represented both teams and private equity funds in sports, tells Coffey the “NFL has shown that private equity can fuel growth without losing sight of what makes the league special. What we’ve seen in year one is that private equity’s involvement has brought fresh resources and strategic expertise to the NFL ecosystem without disrupting the unique culture of ownership that makes the league so strong.” PitchBook private equity analyst Kyle Walters adds: “We have only seen PE make three investments (the Bills, the Dolphins, and the Chargers). We have only seen Ares and Arctos make investments, meaning that Sixth Street, and the consortium of Carlyle, Dynasty Equity and Ludis Capital have yet to make any investments. [That’s] all the more reason to suggest that in the year ahead we could see more activity.” Coffey goes on to note that “the lack of deals managed to help pump up NFL valuations; the average team value is up 20% from 2024. Arctos bought into the Buffalo Bills at a $5.8B valuation and 8% of the Chargers at an undisclosed valuation (Tom Gores bought 27% at a $4B valuation almost a year ago). Ares, meanwhile, bought into the Miami Dolphins at an $8.1B valuation for 10% equity. A White House proposal to let retail investors direct some of their 401(k) retirement assets into private equity funds, if approved, could open the door to more aggressive PE investment, but Coffey notes: “Odds are, fans investing retirement assets in the Kansas City Chiefs instead of Kansas City Southern Railroad stock is a while off.” (link)
