Kansas’ David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium renovation combines a training facility, conference center and stadium into one form, SBJ’s Bret McCormick observes: “In the redesigned stadium, the Anderson Family Football Complex, a stand-alone building previously, was appended to the stadium’s southeast side, while the conference center was added onto the north side. Those three elements are key to the broader Gateway District vision, in which mixed-use development will hug the stadium in ways that generate revenue for the community, university and Jayhawks athletics, help KU football compete, and improve student life and fans’ game-day experience.” McCormick also explains that “because the Gateway District effort involves the city of Lawrence, more funding streams were available, including city and state money, as well as investment from private developers, in this case Edgemoor Infrastructure and Sunflower Development Group.” Jayhawks AD Travis Goff: “There is no way you can maximize these complexes, facilities, visions, without a multitude of funding streams. Used to be that we could operate in athletics in silos on how to build a funding model: debt service, fundraising, premium seating revenues. All still really important core tenets, but that’s not enough to do the rest of these things. [...] And then all of a sudden you’re building some density. Gosh, you’ve got 250 days a year with conferences, a hotel that’s generally activated year-round, and then, man, if you’ve got a hotel that’s activated, then what are you doing with the plaza, and student housing, and next thing you know, you’ve really got something here. But without that conference center, the rest of the things were going to have a tougher time coming to life.” (link)

In Part II of Temple AD Arthur Johnson’s interview with OwlsDaily’s Shawn Pastor, Johnson responds to a question regarding American Commissioner Tim Pernetti’s view on private equity: “I think we're all looking at it from a conference standpoint. Collectively we all have more power together, when you bring all of the conference schools together. He also hired a new chief revenue officer. So Bryan (Calka) has been in that position. You've seen the acronym RISE. So he is really into the revenue, innovation, sports and entertainment, and trying to go out and find different ways to be creative, which they all do, and which all conferences are really looking at those opportunities in trying to see what's there and finding new revenue streams.” On Basketball scheduling & trying to build an at-large worthy non-conference slate: “...the truth is, and we talk about it in the committee room, we don't know what a team is going to be like next year. With all of the turnover on teams, everybody is rebuilding, so it's hard to project, like you started at the start of this conversation, just because someone is a Q3 or Q4 now, does not mean they won't be better next year. Just because someone is a Q1 team this year, they may not be a Q1 team next year. When we get more stability it will be easier again. But right now it's just a lot of uncertainty.” (link)

“You’re constantly in a position of, whether it be uncertainty or it could be just maybe uncomfortable… you really have to be pretty grounded in who you are and your values and understand this is our mission.” That’s Army West Point AD Tom Theodorakis visiting with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2025 NACDA Convention. Theodorakis continues: “When you start going through that decision making process, make sure you have the right people around you. Certainly, I think on a day-to-day basis, there’s always scenarios where you’re like, ‘okay, new challenge and let’s just work through this.’ I had a 90-day plan. … What’s interesting is, you have that plan, but it’s almost like that Mike Tyson quote, ‘everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth.’ I wholeheartedly believe that. So for me it was, ‘hey, here’s this plan,’ but I didn't know I’d be having to hire three coaches in the first months. In some ways, I’m grateful for that because it provided an opportunity for us pretty early on to come together as a group and find the next group of leaders. I think, for us, it was trying to find the opportunities in some of these hard situations that made it a lot easier.” Lots more. (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene wants Penn State back on the Panthers’ football schedule, remarking in a recent visit to 93.7 The Fan: “We’re trying to get Penn State here. I’m hoping at some point in time they’ll want to RESPOND to us and get the series back.” Per On SI’s Ari Meyer, “Greene's statement reads as if he has been trying and Penn State has been uncooperative, so it is unlikely to happen any time soon.” (link)

On Monday, Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy made repeated references to Oregon spending “a lot of money” on its football program, estimating the Ducks “spent close to $40M last year alone” compared to the Cowboys roughly $7M over the last three years combined. UO HC Dan Lanning’s response: “If you want to be a top 10 team in college football, you better be invested in winning and we spend to win. Some people save to have an excuse for why they don’t. Ultimately, he’s a great coach. They’ve done an unbelievable job. But I want to be a team that’s competing at the highest level and we’re really fortunate to be in that situation. I can’t speak on their situation; I have no idea what they got in their pockets over there. I’m sure UT Martin maybe didn’t have as much as them last week, and they played. So we’ll let it play out.” OSU heads to Eugene this weekend. (link)

Kentucky Football HC Mark Stoops continues to push for preseason exhibitions in college football. Stoops: “I’ve said for a while now, we might be one of the only sports that don’t get to play any other people except our own all spring, all summer, all through camp. I mean, it’s exhausting playing your own people over and over again. You’d like to have some practice opportunities with some other teams because we don’t have any practice games or any of that. Just seeing the way people present something is different than your own offense. … I’d just like to give us the opportunity — even if it’s not trying to make money off it, because the minute you say that you’re scrimmaging somebody, everybody’s gonna try to make money off it and charge and all that. I’d like to just practice against some other people. I have a great relationship with [Eastern Kentucky HC] Walt [Wells]. I’m sure we could get together and just practice with EKU. Even if it’s just one-on-ones, half-line, seven-on-seven, just things of that nature. I think it would help.” (link)

Opendorse Director of Collegiate Services & Insights Braly Keller polled NIL directors across the Power 4 and Group of 6 to “take the temperature” on NIL Go. The fastest response time a deal reviewal went through was 35 minutes; the longest was 37.2 days. An estimated 1.7 questions/day come across their desks about NIL Go and the group pegged the percentage of unreported deals at 49%. Keller: “Those numbers tell the story: NIL Go is making some things more efficient, but plenty of deals still slip through the cracks. For compliance officers, the “49% unreported” figure is the one that stings.” (link)

Idaho’s move is a good segue to the litany of Minor League Baseball teams that are increasingly doubling down on selecting team names that pay tribute to local history and culture and that’s leading to more revenue, according to Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming, who notes that team GMs “now want their fans to have an identity that speaks to their organization specifically.” Salem Red Sox GM Allen Lawrence: “We love being affiliated with the (Boston) Red Sox. It’s one of the biggest brands in the world. But we felt like it was time for our club to have a new name that’s both unique and distinctive to baseball here in this market, in Salem, Virginia, and southwestern Virginia. … Quite honestly, we probably should’ve done this years ago.” Per Fleming, the quest for more local branding has led to some crazy team names, such as the Rocket City Trash Pandas and the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, but “many of the rebranded teams made at least $1 million in retail sales in the first year after their name changes,” including $4M in merchandise sales for the Trash Pandas before they even played a game. Syracuse Mets GM Jason Smorol: “The hope is that it does generate great revenue and excitement through merchandise and other opportunities, that’s all part and parcel of this rebrand.” Lawrence has seen the possibilities from having a more hyperlocal name through a recent rebrand to play as the Salem BeerMongers, marking a tribute to the local craft beer industry first introduced in 2019. Lawrence: “I think we sold merchandise in 40-some states within the first 48 hours, and I said, ‘Wow, this is what having your own identity can lead to. Being the Red Sox, we just haven’t had a taste of that, because the fact of the matter is, if somebody wants to buy Red Sox merchandise, they can go to Fanatics or Walmart or Amazon.” (link)

Citing an unfolding ACC football scheduling debate, ESPN’s Pete Thamel inquires: “Does the ACC pivot to nine league games and an additional mandated game against a power conference school? Or, does the league stick with eight league games and a mandate of two games out-of-conference against power schools?” Thamel continues: “Obviously there’s four ACC teams with traditional in-state rivalry games. A complicating factor here is the Notre Dame agreement, which has ND playing five ACC games every year. Those aren’t league games. Those teams with the in-state game would then be playing 11 power games in the years they play Notre Dame. That’d be an exceedingly rare scheduling move, but it does happen occasionally. (There's also wonky math on a nine-game schedule in a 17-team league.). Per sources, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has been vocal within the room about playing 10 power conference games each season, which is not uniform among all leagues. There’s an in-person meeting in late September for the ACC to further discuss the options. Phillips called the meeting, which was not previously scheduled, and sources indicate there’s hope for direction then or soon after. There is also a wait-and-see option to see how things play out this season with the league’s new viewership revenue distribution model.” (link)

More from The Knight Report’s Richard O’Leary Q&A with new Rutgers AD Keli Zinn. On factors needed to make her first 100 days successful: “I’ve got to have my staff here and locked up and everybody knowing who they’re going to work with and what those expectations are. We need to be in a situation where we have a really solid infrastructure on third party name, image and likeness. And so that people can see that, feel that, know exactly what’s going to happen. Our athletes need to know what they can expect in that space. And also importantly, recruits need to be able to hear it. And so when they’re on campus, that’s got to be a focal point as to how that’s going to work. The other area surrounds the house settlement and our revenue share and our scholarship expectations. We’ve got to have that plan locked up and ready to go for them within the next hundred days. I think one of the things that may have been a little bit challenging for them this past year is some of that. Again, those decisions being made a little later in the game, certainly when you’re dealing with attrition and not having an AD present, that can create some challenges. But that’s not the case anymore. And so I’ve made a commitment to our coaches, knowing that recruiting is up on us for the upcoming year, that they will know where they’re at and know what they have to work with so that they can be most effective in recruiting and closing out the first semester here in a really good place for what that future looks like.” (link)

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Noah Furtado reports on Sacramento State’s “newfound swagger,” which for President Luke Wood has already proven to be worthwhile, remarking: “Our success, of course, is going to be determined upon when and how we become FBS. But no matter what, in terms of what this was all about, we have been successful. Because the whole point of this was to raise the visibility of the institution. And there’s no question that we’ve succeeded in doing that.” Furtado goes on to observe that “Sacramento State has committed to a floor of $2.5 million to $3 million in revenue-shared funds to be distributed to athletes” and that the “figure remains fluid and could grow in accordance with increased ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and the like.” After a string of coaching hires including “cool, cowboy-hatted” Football HC Brennan Marion, former Sacramento Kings point guard/Men’s Basketball HC Mike Bibby and NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who's foregoing a salary to serve as Men’s Basketball GM, Furtado writes that the school has experienced a “level of financial support unlike anything the university has ever witnessed” with AD Mark Orr highlighting that football ticket sales were up 65% from last season – in July. For Wood, it’s now about seeing what those big moves and big bucks can produce, commenting: “We got to win. You can bring in an amazing coach, you can bring in amazing players, you can raise money, but nobody cares about it unless you win.” (link)

The Fresno Bee’s Robert Kuwada reports Fresno State will clear about $400K in revenue from last month’s sold out Shakira concert off concessions sales, parking and premium seating from 22 suites at Valley Children’s Stadium. The revenue generated, which also included a facility rental fee and a cut of merchandising sales, provides a financial boost for a department playing catch-up in both sport operating budgets and revenue sharing. Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “I don’t know what I was expecting out of it, but as we got closer to it and looking at the attendance 10 days out, I’m happy with the $400,000. The reality is, if we can get a few of these a year that’s going to be really helpful. It doesn’t close the entire gap, but it gets us closer. There’s upside to greater revenue in the future.” (link)

Northwestern Football HC David Braun says he & Tulane HC Jon Sumrall connected yesterday in regards to reports of the Wildcats refusing to wear white uniforms so the Green Wave could don the same fit worn immediately after Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago. Braun: “Certainly not a gesture of disrespect, but the timing of the request did impact our ability to honor the request. [...] I don't pretend to understand what the city of New Orleans has been through, but what I can tell you is this university and myself have a tremendous amount of respect for the impact that Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans and that region.” (link)

Could the likes of FanDuel or DraftKings become the “official sportsbook” of the SEC or Big Ten? Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey questions whether the rise of player injury and availability reports will eventually create more business opportunities and revenue in college football, with Rumsey observing that with every Power 4 school now releasing such information, “it could only be a matter of time before data companies come on board to start purchasing and distributing pertinent betting metrics to sportsbooks.” With the NCAA’s recent deal with Genius Sports “to start allowing sportsbooks to purchase official data feeds from NCAA championships, including March Madness, and use official NCAA marks and logos,” and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips mentioning that “the gambling and sports wagering landscape has blown up in a way where you see it everywhere now, and it’s really expected,” Rumsey opines that “the new era of college sports opens the door for top betting brands - a move that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.” (link)

While the transfer portal continues to dominate men’s basketball roster construction and high-major coaches increasingly value proven production and narrower risk profiles, The College Front Office’s Noah Henderson notes: “By contrast, blue-chip high school recruits…are also commanding seven-figure packages, but risk tolerance for freshmen is shrinking – unless they’re generational. The result: undervalued prep recruits have become a cost-efficient differentiator, with some schools offering multiyear deals to provide developmental runway and roster continuity. … As high-major teams get older and more experienced, programs increasingly cannot provide an expectation of playing time to freshmen. A multiyear contract allows a grace period to come in and grow in the program without the financial pressures of contributing right away. For high-majors, recruiting freshmen on multiyear deals allows for a commitment to development, the ability to mitigate risk on high upside athletes, the potential to lock a high usage player to a team-friendly deal (if only for a year), and generate greater roster continuity. Players who exceed expectations will provide value on cheap deals while freeing up budget space for teams to spend, or even overspend, on their desired transfer talent or blue-chip freshman prospects. Prep recruits who don’t pan out in a two-year window won’t be a massive financial burden to a budget.” (link)

The Tennessean’s Alaina Morris details Vanderbilt’s work to ready Memorial Gymnasium as the new Women’s Volleyball program’s home, with the first match set for Friday. The gym’s unique “stage” setup and lack of air conditioning has been cause for concern, but the Commodores have addressed both. There is a climate control system in place that, while not an air conditioning unit, is designed to “take off the brunt of the hot gym.” The benches, which for basketball sit on the baseline, will be pushed to the corners. As for the safety concerns, the NCAA has granted a rule that play will be dead if the ball goes off of the playing surface, with no additional protection in place where the court drops off. (link)

Army West Point football student-athlete Larry Pickett Jr., and his father Larry Pickett Sr., have earned praise for their “heroic” and “selfless” actions early Sunday morning after video surfaced of the duo pulling a man from a crashed car just before it burst into flames, according to an Associated Press report. Returning to West Point after a family dinner in New York City’s Times Square, the Picketts happened upon the car that had crashed into a utility pole on Route 9W in Fort Montgomery, NY, pulled the man from the wreck and remained with him until first responders arrived on the scene. Pickett Sr.: “Just after midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it. With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate. There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action. We pulled him out. He took care of him on the side of the road until the police officers got there.” Army AD Tom Theodorakis weighed in on the incident, observing that the Picketts’ conduct is “exactly what we strive to develop ... leadership, courage, and selfless service. Cadet Larry Pickett Jr. and his father exemplify the values we hold dear, stepping up in a moment of crisis to save a life. Proud to see these traits in action, on and off the fields of friendly strife. Count the brave.” (link, link); Video of the incident. (link)

The Athletic’s Zach Powell reports that Florida State linebacker Ethan Pritchard was shot just before 10 p.m. ET Sunday night and hospitalized in intensive care after being wounded inside a vehicle at an apartment complex 15 miles northwest of Tallahassee in Havana, Fla. Per Powell, “Pritchard was visiting family and was driving a family member home when his car was shot at by someone who had allegedly mistaken his car for someone else’s vehicle.” He was transported via ambulance to a local hospital and treated shortly after suffering the wound with FSU issuing a Monday morning statement noting that Pritchard remains in "critical but stable” condition with further updates to be provided. No additional details on the shooting have been released and an Investigation into the incident remains ongoing. (link)
