The Athletic’s Dochterman identifies succession planning in football as the biggest priority for Iowa’s next AD. “Kirk Ferentz will be 68 in August and could coach for five more years. He also could coach one more year. … But what happens next is critical. Even tradition-rich programs like Texas, Michigan, Nebraska and Alabama (before Nick Saban) hired the wrong coaches and had losing seasons. All it takes is two down years with the wrong coach before the program becomes an afterthought regionally and nationally.” On outgoing AD Barta’s pay, Dochterman reports the contract is for “$650K in annual salary and $400K in deferred compensation, the latter of which he receives after June 30. He won’t receive deferred compensation on June 30, 2024 but will earn his salary through his final day on Aug. 1.” (link)

Ivy League Executive Director Harris and Patriot League Commissioner Heppel sit down with Atlantic Hockey Association/College Hockey America Commissioner Morgan to discuss their approaches to navigating the industry’s changing landscape from the conference perspective, including how they collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to develop policies that balance the priorities of each league member. Harris and Heppel also discuss their experiences with media rights negotiations and how they’re positioning their conferences to address the evolving requirements of Division I membership. Heppel notes the Patriot League is “remarkably stable at this moment,” adding: “That being said, I’m not naive to the fact that Division I is constantly changing. We’re aware, we’re tuned in. The number of schools that seem to be the sweet spot for a conference will vary from conference to conference but can be very contingent upon the national regulatory structure. So, you have to be conscious of what those outside forces are that can impact decision-making at the league level, especially when it comes to membership.” Harris acknowledges the Ivy League’s unique stability but notes that “even as homogenous as the schools in the Ivy League are, they bring different perspectives and priorities at times, although very philosophically aligned.” Lots more in the full conversation. At the INFLCR NIL Summit yesterday, SANIL CEO Belzer released NIL deal data from 30+ collectives and more than 1K student-athletes the company manages to reveal how much NIL compensation football and basketball student-athletes are earning. The top 10 football players in the 2023-24 transfer portal are bringing in an average of $500K, while the top 25 are averaging $250K, the top 50 average $125K, the top 100 average $100K, the top 150 average $75K and the top 300 average $30K. In men’s hoops, the top three roster spots on Power 5 and Big East teams make an average of $75K, while their counterparts in the Group of 5, Atlantic 10 and WCC make $35K. The top three players for mid-majors are making an average of $15K. Of note, the top 10 players in the MBB transfer portal also make $500K on average, while the top 25 are bringing in $350K. Lots more data. (link); Check out the recap video from Day 2 of the event, which is being held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. (link)

UAB Football HC Dilfer points out that when it comes to NIL and the transfer portal: “I’m not competing against Tulane and UTSA for retention. I’m competing against Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Clemson, South Carolina, right? So, how can I say – if they can offer $400K, do I even need to offer $50K? So, do you even try to retain that player? If you develop a player and he’s good enough to make that type of money at a program that would be perceived up from us – economically, for sure – well, as a player-centric coach, isn’t it my job to encourage him to take that money if he doesn’t hurt his chances of making generational wealth at the next level? And there lies the kicker.” (link)

Baseball’s Ejection Questions…
+ Clemson centerfielder Cannarella was ejected from the Tigers’ regional matchup against Tennessee in the middle of the 13th inning on Saturday night after apparently exchanging words with a UT player as the two sides were heading toward their respective dugouts. Some, including ESPN commentator Peterson, took exception with the decision to eject Cannarella. Peterson: “There's zero way that you can throw a kid out for doing that. Either one of them. And I don't know what was said. But they're going the other way, guys. We're not face-to-face. We're not initiating anything. They're fired up. They're running off the field. This has got to stop." (link)
+ Indiana second baseman Cerny was suspended for last night’s regional championship game against Kentucky for violating NCAA celebration rules in Saturday’s game. D1Baseball’s Fitt weighs in: “A violation of the inane rule prohibiting celebratory props from field of play as player returns to the dugout. The offending item here was a big red chain. I know rules are rules. But it's a ridiculous rule and needs to go. Baseball is a game. Let them have fun for Pete's sake.” (link)

ESPN’s Davis and Thamel discuss the future of college football on the College GameDay podcast, and in a discussion about what’s in store for bowls, Thamel calls it “preposterous that the bowl system is going to be woven through the [College Football Playoff].” Instead, Thamel submits that those games should be played on home fields or teams should take the money themselves. “Why are you subletting your best content? To me, that makes no sense…but college football being so wed to tradition is holding it back.” Moreover, Thamel says: “When these guys make the Playoff, they don’t care that there’s some guy in a yellow jacket greeting them at the bus. They just don’t care. This is a cold-blooded billion-dollar business. We just need to cut some of the sentimentality crap out of it and just move on.” Davis posits that playing CFP games on college campuses, rather than being anti-tradition, is actually pro-fan, noting that whether it’s money or time, everyone has a limited amount of resources to continually make trips across the country to see their teams play. Virginia Tech Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Wurthman and Asst. Director for Marketing and Fan Experience Thurston join D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle for a conversation about the Hokies’ first conference title in women’s basketball, setting a single-season attendance record, the team’s Final Four run, and how the athletic department is seizing on this moment to continue growing the program. The Hokies also garnered over 2M social media engagements in the past year and have already sold out of season tickets in reserved seating areas for next year. Wurthman says “everything is on the table” when it comes to promoting the team on social media, saying the staff now has a “license to create in that space. They have proof of concept, both in terms of competitive excellence and in terms of how they build programs in our venues and how they build marketing programs in that space. Now they can just take it and kind of add steroids to that mix. … And this [success] gave us that opportunity.” Full interview. (link)

San Diego’s MLS franchise will come with a local chapter of the Right to Dream program, a worldwide academy for scouting and developing youth soccer players, and Right to Dream CEO Penn says that while the goal is prepare players for professional careers, some end up initially pursuing collegiate careers in the United States to further their development before entering the MLS SuperDraft. San Diego State Men’s Soccer HC Hopkins on how that could be a win-win for SDSU and the players. “A big part of our culture here (at SDSU) is developing them as people, developing their core values that we have here, and then preparing them for the real world. It still could be professional soccer. Obviously, we’ve shown that we can do that as well, but it might be professional in something else with a world-class degree from an amazing university. Having that as our guiding principle, I think there’s going to be a lot of alignment. I think it’s going to be a really unique way that they’re doing it, and I think it’s going to help set them apart.” (link)

Reporting continues around what Iowa may do with its AD hire & Ball State President Mearns lauds Hawkeyes Interim AD Goetz to The Gazette’s Hlas: “I hired Beth because she had a wide range of extensive experience in athletic administration at large institutions. Also, she was a student-athlete and a coach. But what particularly impressed me during the interviews and was confirmed over four years was her excellent leadership skills and exceptional character.” Specifically, on the $15M fundraising project in Muncie for a new indoor football facility: “Beth accomplished the fundraising and construction within 18 months. Her predecessors were not able to make any progress for probably 10 years. [...] Beth is one of those special leaders. She makes us better at the jobs we do. I think I’m a better leader because Beth was on my team.” (link)

Arizona AD Heeke chimes in on the baseball RPI debate: “In Western baseball, we have a challenge. Much like a lot of our sports, a lot of the national experts, the announcers, those who are talking about college baseball, don’t get a chance to see our teams play as much. So that hurts us from the get-go. I think it’s time to take a good look at the RPI at all levels. Has it become antiquated for current day? (Does) it get artificially inflated in certain leagues or certain parts of the country (and) doesn’t benefit other parts of the country? Are we rewarding teams that are going out and trying their very best to schedule well, yet their geography might limit them to a certain degree? You can only play so many midweek games. We don’t have a lot of opportunities to play midweek games, to get on a bus, that are relatively affordable. We’ve got to get on airplanes (to) go play midweek games. That’s tough. So I think there can be a very robust, productive conversation around the RPI, and I welcome that and look forward to that happening.” (link)

Outgoing Hawai’i AD Matlin says upgrades for the Ching Complex, which will take football seating from 9K to 15K, are on pace to be completed by the start of the 2023 season. New Rainbow Warriors AD Angelos, who officially starts tomorrow: “Certainly there’s a lot of political factors, but I hope we can all be aligned in our goal and our mission, from the governor’s office to the legislature to local government to the university. That’s when really things happen. If there’s bickering it can lead to gridlock. My big thing will be to try to bring that alignment together where we can accomplish great things.” (link)

The primary thing is we do everything in our power to generate as much revenue as we possibly can … and at the same time making sure we’re being responsible with our expense projections as well.” (link)

Oklahoma Softball had a $5M budget for FY22, the largest for an NCAA softball program. Love’s Travel Stops, headquartered in Oklahoma City, gave $12M toward the Sooners’ $47.9M softball stadium project and Love’s Chief Culture Officer Meyer notes: “Community giving is a huge part of Love’s culture, and we see our donation to OU softball as a perfect fit between a program and a company that represent the people of Oklahoma on a national level. We’re very excited about the Sooners’ historic run, and we can’t wait to see more records broken at Love’s Field.” The Sooners are riding a 50-game winning streak - the longest in NCAA softball history, have seven All-Americans on this year’s squad and averaged 2,083 fans/game this year, up from 1,598 a year ago. More from Sportico’s Caron about the impact Love’s has had on the Sooners program, and the Sooners program on the sport as a whole. (link)

New Mexico State released a statement on the reported friction around scheduling men’s basketball contests with rival New Mexico: “We know these games mean a lot to the people of New Mexico. Unfortunately, we’re not sure what the holdup has been on getting these matchups scheduled. The NMSU Police Department has had numerous conversations with the UNM Police Department over the past few months to share our safety and security plans. Additionally, our NMSU Police Chief planned on reaching out directly to the UNM Athletic Director later (Wednesday). Our personnel have national-level training, and our game management processes meet industry standards for events of this magnitude. We’re hopeful we’ll be able to see our friends from Albuquerque in Las Cruces later this year.” UNM insists it is not asking for detailed security plans but would like, at a minimum, assurances in writing that there will be more police presence than in years past. MB Sports/Connect’s Banker is joined by Tufts (DIII) Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine Driban, who also serves as a member of the Special and Scientific Staff at Tufts Medical Center to the Secondary Prevention Task Force that was assembled to address preventative strategies for osteoarthritis for college athletes post-ACL injury. Banker and Driban dive into why ACL injuries are more prevalent now, the impact of athletes specializing in one sport, preventative strategies that could reduce the risk of injury by 40% and more. ACL injuries, Driban explains, occur across all sports, “especially the ones that involve a lot of dynamic pivoting with unexpected movements, landing with unexpected activities occurring. … Women’s sports tend to experience them a little more often than men.” Driban also explains that despite advances in preventative strategies, ACL injuries have occurred at an increasing rate over the past 20 years. Driban attributes the increase to sports specialization and a lack of coaches who use preventative strategies despite their widespread availability, among other factors. Full conversation on Connect.
