Vanderbilt (DI) football student-athletes Langston Patterson, Yilanan “Issa” Ouattara, along with former Commodores CJ Taylor and Quincy Skinner Jr., are among the 10 athletes who filed a federal lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s redshirt rule limiting time on the field to five seasons. The players argue NCAA rules “force college athletes to the sidelines not because of injury, misconduct, or academic ineligibility” but because of an “arbitrary” rule on what counts as a season. Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “The alleged harm suffered by players includes lost opportunities to land greater NIL deals, denied cuts or larger cuts of House settlement revenue shares and chances to further hone skills that might attract the interest of pro teams. Given that an estimated 98% of college athletes won’t become pro athletes and will need to pursue other careers or grad school, the plaintiffs say the chance to earn while in college is especially important. … In the coming weeks, attorneys for the NCAA will answer Patterson v. NCAA and deny wrongdoing. Expect NCAA attorneys to argue, as they have in other eligibility cases, that eligibility rules are fundamentally about how long a college student can play a sport and should thus fall outside the scrutiny of antitrust law, which centers on commercial dealings. The NCAA will likely also argue that the redshirt rule better links educational goals with athletic opportunities and helps to distinguish college sports from pro sports.” (link)

Wisconsin Lutheran AD Jeremiah Hoffman sits down on the inaugural Warriors 1-on-1 to discuss his transition to succeeding long-time AD Skip Noon, the opportunity for the Warriors and how his golf background translates to helping him as an AD. Having served as a PGA professional, coach and player, Hoffman on the parallels between golf and the AD role: “You are on an island. There are not any subs. When you suck, you either keep sucking or you get better in the round. You can't be subbed out. You can't take a time-out. […] So you really figure out how to just get it done and I think that is really, really useful as an athletic director.” On stepping into the chair after AD Skip Noon led the department for 27 years: “As I come in, it's really, really hard oftentimes to follow a legend. Skip was here and virtually everyone that knows anything about WLC athletics knows Skip and he did a phenomenal job growing this department from very humble roots to where it is now, to a well-established, competitive, solid institution within the NAC and within DIII and well-respected by our peers in our conference and state and beyond. I think we got to a really high point under Skip, and I think we're just in a position where we can go even higher. And it's because of that foundation that he laid that we can do some new, cool things that are on the horizon, whether it's more sports or whether it's game day experiences or whether it's new facilities. […] I think we're just uniquely positioned because of how we're viewed, but also where our location is and how, as a whole, the college has approached things in a really tenuous time in higher ed financially, where we're not having to chase every dollar and do crazy, crazy things, and we haven't done crazy, crazy things to maintain. So that positions us as we move into this new era of higher ed to be successful.” (link)

In response to an NCAA memo outlining pro-SCORE Act talking points for stakeholders to share with their elected members of Congress, Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell writes: “It is no surprise that the NCAA is a huge advocate for the SCORE Act. After all, it allows them to override the multitude of court cases they’ve lost (including at the Supreme Court, where they lost 9-0). They want to resume the business of policing, punishing, and restricting Student Athletes’ rights!! Under NO circumstance should the NCAA be given a carte blanche antitrust exemption. We should establish a new governing body that represents the interests of ALL of the schools (Big and Small), ALL of the sports (Revenue, Olympic, and Women’s), and gives Student Athletes a seat at the table for the first time in history!!” (link)

The Minnesota Star Tribune’s Eleanor Hildebrandt profiles Saint Mary’s (MN)’s Game Plan for Life program, which launched last year as a trial with Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey student-athletes, as the department seeks to assist its student-athletes with life after sport. The program, which is funded by a $50K annual donation from the Kiemel family for five years, begins with a retreat that touches on career development, financial literacy, communication, relationships, nutrition and more, after which student-athletes are split into gender-specific cohorts that meet online monthly with executive coaches Kylene Ruth and Jay Millar. Ruth on the support of the program: “It says a lot that the institution is interested in you as a holistic individual, not just how many points you can score or whatever the equivalent is for your athletic endeavor. That trust that gets built, and this idea of ‘I’m a valuable individual,’ it just breeds excitement.” AD Brian Sisson adds that the acceptance of the program has been immediate: “The timing of this sets them up for the bridge and helps with the life skills that, sometimes, they’re not learning in middle or high school.” (link)

➤ Chicago is working on cutting $100M in expenses as a result of changes from the federal government and two years of budget deficits. President Paul Alivisatos says measures will include a loss of 100-150 jobs and a reduction in senior leadership positions, scaling back on capital projects, discontinuing programs, pausing enrollment in doctoral and master’s programs and more. ➤ Catholic President Peter Kilpatrick chatted with Higher Ed Dive’s Ben Unglesbee about how the university is working out of its $30M structural deficit and recent layoffs. On the cuts, Kilpatrick says revenue-generating areas would be as protected as possible and workforce redundancies were eliminated. Administratively, Catholic has implemented AI to assist with customer resource management and academic advising and partnered with local institutions and other Catholic institutions to share certain services. Kilpatrick: “I would argue that not many university presidents have a good feel for ‘When should I start cutting? When should I not?’ Now that I’ve been here three years, I feel like I’m in a better position. And we will never run an out-of-balance budget again. Never.” (link)
