Vanderbilt football student-athletes Langston Patterson, Yilanan “Issa” Ouattara, along with former Commodores CJ Taylor and Quincy Skinner Jr., are among the 10 athletes who filed a federal lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s redshirt rule limiting time on the field to five seasons. The players argue NCAA rules “force college athletes to the sidelines not because of injury, misconduct, or academic ineligibility” but because of an “arbitrary” rule on what counts as a season. Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “The alleged harm suffered by players includes lost opportunities to land greater NIL deals, denied cuts or larger cuts of House settlement revenue shares and chances to further hone skills that might attract the interest of pro teams. Given that an estimated 98% of college athletes won’t become pro athletes and will need to pursue other careers or grad school, the plaintiffs say the chance to earn while in college is especially important. … In the coming weeks, attorneys for the NCAA will answer Patterson v. NCAA and deny wrongdoing. Expect NCAA attorneys to argue, as they have in other eligibility cases, that eligibility rules are fundamentally about how long a college student can play a sport and should thus fall outside the scrutiny of antitrust law, which centers on commercial dealings. The NCAA will likely also argue that the redshirt rule better links educational goals with athletic opportunities and helps to distinguish college sports from pro sports.” (link)

In response to an NCAA memo outlining pro-SCORE Act talking points for stakeholders to share with their elected members of Congress, Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell writes: “It is no surprise that the NCAA is a huge advocate for the SCORE Act. After all, it allows them to override the multitude of court cases they’ve lost (including at the Supreme Court, where they lost 9-0). They want to resume the business of policing, punishing, and restricting Student Athletes’ rights!! Under NO circumstance should the NCAA be given a carte blanche antitrust exemption. We should establish a new governing body that represents the interests of ALL of the schools (Big and Small), ALL of the sports (Revenue, Olympic, and Women’s), and gives Student Athletes a seat at the table for the first time in history!!” (link)

Maryland AD Jim Smith tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy his first priority is to establish a championship culture, which includes making sure everyone understands the expectations. “The second part of that is really to enhance the fan experience for our customers, for our donors, for our fans, for our alumni and for our campus community. You have to do a real evaluation of ‘Are we delivering on an incredible fan experience?’ If we are, then we’ll be able to significantly increase our revenue opportunities for all our programs. It kind of leads in those three things at a really high level and really in that order – culture, experience, revenue. You’re building everything around that. It’s no different than going in and being a CEO of a company that’s got 20 business units, and each of the business units might have different objectives, but they have to be resourced appropriately to achieve those objectives.” Smith tells Portnoy that when it comes to generating new revenue, naming rights opportunities and jersey patch opportunities are “table stakes in the pro sports world that we’ll be very ready to capitalize on. We can do much better in the dynamic pricing area. Sometimes, we think of things in a binary way in collegiate athletics – there’s fundraising, and there’s ticket prices. Well, there’s also a third way to look at this, and that’s through dynamic and how we can create that environment that exists at some of the other universities, but maybe not. Here at Maryland, there’s new media opportunities outside of our Big Ten obligations that I think we really can begin to capitalize on. … There’s the use of AI in how we can really leverage the strength of 6M people in our DMA and our 400K alumni.” (link)

More from Portnoy as the ACC over the weekend debuted the first of four new ad spots featuring bobbleheads as part of its ongoing partnership with Wasserman, and ACC VP for Creative Strategy Martha Schwab remarks: “The world of college athletics has been heavy with a lot of deep things that are not fun. This brings the fun back into sports a bit, and it brings the fun back into what we can say and what we can do, lighten it up and have a good time, but still [have a] message.” Conversations about the campaign began two years ago when Wasserman Chief Creative Officer Danny Nunez first presented the idea to ADs, and Portnoy notes: “That same meeting included each admin voicing their own character during the ACC’s take on a Hollywood table read. … The commercials themselves were shot over three days at a studio in Brooklyn. Set designers created a dorm room out of moving walls, while one person was responsible for actually tapping the bobbleheads before each take to ensure their, er, heads bobbled during filming.” Schwab adds: “We can give them voices because mascots usually don’t have voices. ... We can make it fun. We can make it reactive. They can say things that our coaches can’t say. They can say things that our student-athletes can’t say. Same thing with the conference office.” (link)

Auburn Deputy AD for External Affairs Rhett Hobart explains the north end zone video board at Jordan-Hare Stadium looks incomplete underneath because the planned multi-use facility and premium seating will fill up that space. “We’ve been very intentional in this project. We have much larger aspirations for that north end zone. And for us it was important that we did not design this video board in a shortsighted manner to get a video board there, get it built, have it running. … We designed that north board with the entire north end zone expansion in mind. So, yes, it looks maybe a little big high right now and a little bit unique, but I want you to picture in the future that all being filled in.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand observes that the “anticipated battle between Dave Portnoy and Pat McAfee’s teams over the last week makes more sense if you look at these college football personalities as WWE characters. Like many of you, I tuned in to watch Portnoy’s first appearance on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff ahead of the Buckeyes-Longhorns game. … And boy, did Portnoy deliver, walking out onto the stage, yelling at Ohio State students, singing Hail to the Victors, wearing a ‘*Still Can’t Beat Michigan’ t-shirt, and playing the classic heel in a standard WWE Raw arc. Ah, now I get what Fox and ESPN were going for with their creators strategy. We’re witnessing the Bravoification of culture, which has spread across government, businesses, and institutions as attention becomes more difficult to capture. The only real thing that captivates a generation that has never known a world without reality TV is drama, and Portnoy understands this better than just about anyone. He’s Trumpian in his approach to dominating headlines and giving his fans (and haters) exactly what they tune in for. He’s turning Big Noon Kickoff into appointment TV – although without ratings at the time of publishing, we don’t know how much of an appointment it is just yet. Still, I can’t wait to see what manufactured drama he kicks up next.” (link)

Asked for comment on recent news that Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud would be stepping down at the end of the 2025-26 school year, Orange AD John Wildhack tells The Daily Orange senior staff writer Aiden Stepansky: “Kent Syverud has been incredibly supportive of athletics. We don’t do the Lally Athletics Complex without the support of Chancellor Syverud. So, he’s been an incredible supporter. … Obviously a new chancellor is going to do what he or she thinks is best for the university. And that’s the way transitions happen.” Wildhack also shared his thoughts on Football scheduling: “It's a measuring stick for us. And we had a measuring stick on Saturday against Tennessee. [Head Coach] Fran [Brown] referenced in yesterday's press conference things that we need to do better. But if you want to be the best, and that's our goal, is to compete for ACC championships and college football playoff spots, then you've got to play high quality competition. So to me, it's a challenge, yes, but every challenge presents opportunity.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen tells the Omaha World-Herald’s Tom Shatel that the Huskers’ game against Cincinnati at Kansas City’s GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium was such a “spectacular” success that the school will do it again, remarking: “We’ll do it again in Kansas City if we’re asked. When it fits.” Per Shatel, that means NU would do it “as long as the school would get to keep seven home games that season. That's the baseline. The athletic budget calls for it.” Dannen continues: “There aren’t many years we would do it. In years where we happened to have eight home games or an opponent who happened to want to take a home game there. We have to have seven home games.” With Dannen not speculating on when another trip to KC might occur, the author observes that in 2027 the Huskers currently have eight home games scheduled, meaning that “if the Kansas City Chiefs want another Nebraska experience, don’t be surprised if it happens that quick.” According to Dannen, there was even an unexpected benefit for NU as the school received a share of $1.5M as part of what the AD describes as a “first class” experience. Dannen: “For a road trip, that is wonderful. It’s more than we budgeted. When you go on the road, it’s essentially $100K a day, between the cost of the plane and everything else. And this was less than a normal trip. So financially it was a really good weekend for us. … It felt like a bowl experience. I’ve had people all across the country text me to say how the atmosphere came across on TV. It was spectacular. There were Nebraska fans who flew in all over the country. I’m not sure we could ask for more. The outcome was icing on top. The Chiefs organization gets a lot of credit.” (link)

Missouri has raised $100M of its $125M Memorial Stadium Centennial Project goal following a substantial donation from the Farmer Families to name the Rock M Club. AD Laird Veatch: “It is no secret that we are asking a lot of our people, from contributing to this critical project through donations or premium seating purchases, and we will continue to do so. The response to those requests has been overwhelming, and we cannot thank our supporters, like the Farmer Families, enough for helping us take major steps towards realizing the opportunities ahead of us. We are making great strides but also continue to have a considerable gap to close with our SEC peers. […] Our contributors have a true 'Will to Win' and understand how vital their continued investment is to our ability to win at the highest levels. In turn, we are committed to re-investing our resources into what truly drives winning, which will unlock moments and memories that generations of Mizzou fans crave. Whether it's through philanthropic giving, joining the Mizzou Leadership Circle or purchasing seats, it will continue to take all of us to realize our shared dreams.” (link)

NCAA Research and Teamworks are collaborating via a three-year agreement on survey distribution as part of the Association’s continuous effort to elevate student-athlete voices and positively impact the personal, academic and athletic development of student-athletes. Division I schools will be asked to participate in the surveys four to six times per year with each capped at 20 questions and designed to take three-to-five minutes to complete. Consisting of questions about topics related to the student-athlete experience, the voluntary surveys will be generated by the research staff or at the behest of NCAA committees, the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee or national office leadership and will be distributed only to student-athletes at schools that opt in to participate in each study. Student-athletes' names will not be included in survey responses and each survey will need approval from the NCAA Research Review Board before it is distributed. The first survey is expected to launch Sept. 30 and include questions about performance technology use and other well-being items. (link)

Count UCLA Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin among those preparing for a world where House settlement provisions effectively eliminate booster-driven pay-for-play or for one where lawsuits lead back to the sort of unrestricted free agency witnessed last spring in the transfer portal. Cronin: “You have athletic directors nationwide that want to believe in the new system, that it’s reality, but you have to be ready. You have to have Plan A and Plan B. You have to have Plan B because if it goes back to where it was this spring, and other people have Plan B and you don’t, then you’re right back to struggling to get players.” Noting he’s “not optimistic” about the House provisions sticking, Cronin remarks that NIL is “a noble attempt to put everybody on a level playing field, but I just don’t see in our country where it’s constitutionally legal to limit wages and tell people what their value is. I don’t see how it holds up in court. You hear all these coaches saying, ‘We just want to know the rules are, there’s got to be some sort of level playing field.’ But I don’t see how we get there. … Three weeks after NIL Go started, they walked back the statement that collectives couldn’t operate. So it becomes ‘How do we not get sued again? How do we not lose again?’” More. (link)

According to D1Baseball.com’s Bradley Smart, the inception of the transfer portal and immediate eligibility has added a significant wrinkle to the process of building collegiate baseball rosters. Going back a decade to 2015, six full years before the advent of the transfer portal, Smart reports that the estimated averages based on available roster data of the percentage of plate appearances and innings pitched by original recruits was 84.3% for hitters and 82.7% for hitters, reflecting “an era where programs focused on consistently hitting on recruiting classes and developing them over the years.” Fast forward to 2025 and those “averages have plummeted to between 50 and 60 percent for both pitchers and hitters. Players that started their careers elsewhere are creeping closer to contributing, on average, more innings and plate appearances than those that were original signees in a recruiting class.” Per Smart, there’s not a lot of “rhyme or reason” to how teams are constructing rosters with some having “pitching staffs filled with transfers, others lineups, and vice versa. … The rapid expansion of the numbers of players available in the portal has created an abundance of change each offseason and it’s something that is unlikely to slow down. … The simplest conclusion is that filling those innings and building a lineup has become more and more challenging with each passing season.” (link)

LSU Swimming & Diving team members have alleged in exit interviews that their coaches “engaged in bullying, racist comments and ‘toxic’ behavior,” per the Louisiana Illuminator’s Piper Hutchinson. Multiple student-athlete complaints garnered via public records requests covering three years center on HC Rick Bishop and former AHC Leah Stancil, with student-athletes alleging the program was “rife with bullying and motivation through fear.” Hutchinson writes that “one athlete said the program broke them ‘physically and mentally,’ while another said the coaches didn’t respect injuries. One student complained that Stancil ‘made her life hell,’ … causing her to have a mental health crisis, and that the assistant coach ruined the sport for her. Multiple athletes said in their interviews that Stancil made fun of a Chinese student’s name, commented on athletes’ appearances and showed favoritism toward men on the team. Other students reported that after a woman on the team complained about inappropriate behavior by male teammates, Bishop excused the men’s behavior in comments to the entire team, saying ‘boys are stupid and can make stupid decisions’ while making direct eye contact with the woman who made the report. One student complained that Bishop intimidated her when she attempted to raise concerns about Stancil’s behavior, alleging the head coach would not let her read a letter detailing Stancil’s actions without Stancil present.” Questioned about whether Stancil's contract non-renewal was related to the complaints, LSU Athletics spokesman Zach Greenwell stated that “the university does not comment on specific personnel matters,” while Bishop and Stancil did not respond to requests for comment.
