The Football Oversight Committee voted today to support a single transfer portal in January, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the “Administrative Committee still needs to formally adopt the change later. The 10-day window is expected to open January 2. … As ‘Emergency Legislation,’ it requires approval from the Administrative Committee by October 1 to take effect this year. The NCAA is in the midst of restructuring and populating committees under the new governance structure.” (link)

“As much as the ACC’s soul remains on the basketball courts of Tobacco Road, its future rests in major wins on the football field,” writes The Athletic’s Matt Baker who recently followed ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips around on “one of the most important opening weekends of his conference’s 72-year history” which provided “five chances for statement victories that would elevate the league’s reputation.” Baker notes that “there are only so many chances for one conference to differentiate itself from the rest. Only so many opportunities to seize the marquee wins that entice TV partners and influence College Football Playoff decisions. Only so many years before the next round of media rights negotiations and conference realignment threaten to destabilize the industry and, perhaps, Phillips’ league.” While the ACC posted just a 2-3 record during Phillips’ road trip, the league gained a CFP contender at Florida State, didn’t lose one at Clemson and solidified one at Miami. They must carry the ACC from here to create the blockbuster matchups and postseason success the conference needs to keep going.” Phillips on the weekend: “Nobody’s handing any trophies out after Week 1. However, the narrative starts to reset.” (link)

CBS Sports’ John Talty writes that Duke is now “all-in on football” in a way it hasn’t been before after an offseason that saw the Blue Devils land former Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah in a deal believed to be worth $8M over two seasons. Fresh off a 9-4 record in 2024, Blue Devils AD Nina King says the program’s offseason moves showed the world that Duke was “going for it.” King: “We've got this men's basketball program that is absolutely elite, top of the top in the brand. But why can't football be right there with men's basketball? We're here, we want to compete. It's not title-or-bust, but can we play at [the College Football Playoff] level? Absolutely, I think we can get there.” The Blue Devils signed four four-stars in its most recent recruiting class, including the school’s highest-ranked signee in history, edge rusher Bryce Davis. Per Talty, such a player “probably wouldn't have gone to Duke in the past … but Duke thinks it is selling something very few, if any other program, can offer with a top-ranked academic university that also (now) cares about football.” Duke Football HC Manny Diaz: “We're in a different era now, and kids are making choices that they just didn't make 10 years ago. And that's going to disrupt this game, and I think in a good way, by the way. I think it's going to be super exciting. I think it already is and way less predictable than it's been." (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois joins the JohnWallStreet podcast and frames the athletic department as a $150M enterprise that needed a CEO-level reset. Reed-Francois notes the Wildcats slashed the inherited deficit from ~$39M to ~$5M through a line-by-line budget review, debt and contract renegotiations (including a Nike deal saving $2.5M per year), and trimming roughly 17 positions, many of which were unfilled. UA also brought commercial rights in-house via a 501(c)(3) with an LLC subsidiary, and Reed-Francois says: “The first year I think we hit about 114%. … This year it’s only August 21 and we’ve already hit 100% of our goal.” Furthermore, philanthropy is up 47% YoY, and 81% of the athletic department’s partners are Tucson-based. Reed-Francois on her operating ethos: “We run a $150M business and we have to recognize that as the CEO of this business…you have to look at where are you spending your money and are you maximizing your revenue. … If you are spending this dollar…would you spend it if it was your own dollar?” As it relates to the Wildcats’ long-term strategy, Reed-Francois explains the focus will be on year-round facility monetization and premiumization: “We want to be able to do one big concert every year at Arizona Stadium. McKale is a little bit harder. … There’s some great opportunities there, whether it could be bunker suites, a club, etc.” Full podcast. (link)

Discussing the importance of Maryland’s non-revenue programs and if they can keep up in the current college athletics landscape, Terrapins AD Jim Smith offers to the Baltimore Sun’s Taylor Lyons: “I see it in about all 20 of our teams. They all have the chance to be incredibly successful. And so how do we bring the resources to the table to make them all successful? That doesn’t mean they all can be successful all at once at the exact same time. But building a plan to where we can make sure we’re competitive in all the sports that we compete in is the goal. Investing in men’s and women’s lacrosse or field hockey or soccer or gymnastics or wrestling, it’s all important. Golf, tennis, all of it. I’m a believer that you can do it all. I’m not an or guy. I’m an and guy. We can do this, and we can do that. We don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. Can we do it all at once? No. But we can do it all. That’s what I believe.” (link)

Ross Dellenger has the latest on the EA Sports’ College Football ‘27 licensing agreement for On3, noting that “since February, nearly 4K power conference football players – many of them from blueblood programs like Georgia, Alabama and Oregon – have signed their exclusive video game rights over to … Pathway Sports & Entertainment, a startup company focused on monetizing athlete NIL rights and … offering players more money than EA. Pathway has paid out more than $6M to these football players with, presumably, the intention to negotiate a better deal for players – with royalties – from EA Sports. It worked – somewhat. EA, not-so-conveniently, increased its base fee to match Pathway’s offer to players but without royalties.” The issue with EA Sports’ new player contract, according to Dellenger, is that, in part, “the video game developer has not struck a deal with Pathway to ascertain the video game rights of players who signed the Pathway agreement – a move that may put at risk the inclusion of those players in the College Football 27 game.” According to those familiar with the situation, Pathway has reached out to EA and has been engaged with the company.” However, a person with knowledge of the situation told Dellenger: “As it stands right now, EA does not have a relationship with Pathway,” while another inquired, “why is EA not negotiating with Pathway and the players?” (link)

Meanwhile, on the hoops front, EA Sports has rescinded its offer to schools for a standalone college basketball game. According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, EA Sports VP of Commercial Partnerships and Licensing Sean O’Brien has indicated the company is pulling out because some schools had decided to work with rival publisher 2K Sports in an NBA game. From O’Brien’s memo: “Given there are some schools choosing to accept the 2K Sports proposal for inclusion in NBA 2K, the offer to be included in a college basketball video game will unfortunately have to be rescinded. Everyone at EA Sports is disappointed that we all couldn’t find an acceptable path forward, but we appreciate your support in trying to bring a standalone college basketball game with all men’s and women’s Division I institutions and student athletes, conferences as well as the NCAA, in a way that fans have told us they want. We really appreciate your support. Good luck with back to school and an exciting start to the football season.” (link)

Nike is launching a new campaign called “Why do it?” taking “aim at the pervasiveness of cringe culture, which often frames earnest effort as uncool,” according to Fast Company’s Jeff Beer. Nike CMO Nicole Graham explains: “Those three words (Just Do It) mean so much to us, but we can’t just be holier-than-thou about it,” says Nike chief marketing officer Nicole Graham. “We have to make sure that those three words are resonating with each generation. … Fear of failure and fear of trying, and terms like, ‘Don’t be a try-hard,’ ‘You’re so cringe,’ are all reserved for anyone who is showing passion for something. So we wanted to take those three words and make sure we’re contemporizing the values of what they mean.” Graham also notes the new campaign is just one part of a broader global effort, as the company shifts back to dividing itself into teams focusing on specific sports. “I see already how quickly that success can happen, and the momentum right now is insane. The running team was the first, and then the football team, now basketball and cricket. We have made this large company feel very, very small and intimate, so I’m incredibly excited and optimistic.” Also from Graham: “We have to make sure that we’re heroing our biggest athletes and making them feel accessible, but we also have to take accessible individuals and make them feel like heroes.” (link)

The Big 12 is reportedly entering into a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Allstate, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who adds that while exact deal terms weren’t immediately available, “the agreement is believed to be one of the two most significant commercial deals in conference history.” The arrangement is set to include the creation of the “Allstate Championship Series” -- a year-round collaboration between the league and company that will see points awarded to member institutions based on performance in conference championships, graduation rates, academic and student services and community engagement – and the awarding of the “Allstate Commissioner’s Cup.” The company will become the presenting sponsor of all Big 12 Olympic sport championships and receive integration across the league’s football and men’s and women’s basketball championships. The partnership also includes digital and in-venue branding at Big 12 championships, original storytelling content and the designation of Allstate as the “Official Insurance Partner of the Big 12 Conference.” (link)

Here are the details of Florida AD Scott Stricklin’s extension, which keeps him with the Gators through October 31, 2030, and increases his total annual compensation to $2.075M annually, making him the eighth-highest paid AD in the SEC and 17th nationally. Stricklin's base salary of $1.25M, which increased $200K from his previous contract, is “subject to future adjustments based upon percentage increases periodically available to UAA staff, though any compensation changes will require approval from UF's President,” per Swamp247’s Graham Hall, who adds: “In the event Stricklin's contract is terminated by the UAA without cause, the UAA will pay his base salary along with a $290K retention incentive for the remainder of the contract terms. Notably, Stricklin's new contract includes an option for a post-athletic director term, where he's able to become a special assistant to the succeeding athletic director upon the expiration of his contract if he's no longer serving as UF's athletic director.” Additionally, Stricklin will receive $100K if the Gators finish in the top five in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, $75K for a 6-10 finish and $50K for an 11-15 finish. He will also receive a $100K bonus for an APR of 985 or higher, $75K for APR of 950 or higher and $50K if each team had a multiyear APR rate of 950 or higher. (link, link)

Texas Tech Board of Regents Chairman Cody Campbell talks with OutKick’s Clay Travis about the future of college sports and submits that the “SCORE Act is very focused on the legal part – antitrust exemption, it establishes that student-athletes are not employees, and then it provides for preemption of the state laws. So right now we have 39 different state laws that govern college athletics and so they’re all in conflict with one another. It’s a huge mess, and it’s been a race to the bottom. … The problem is the SCORE Act does not fully address the problem. It focuses on the legal piece, but there are two other legs of the stool that have to be addressed – governance and economics. If all we do is pass the SCORE Act, we’re just locking in these costs and you’re locking schools out of revenue opportunities. And so if we’re not thoughtful in how we do this, we could end up dooming smaller schools almost immediately.” Campbell also notes that “we house our entire Olympic development program inside of intercollegiate athletics. We’re the only country in the world that does that. … The opportunities for women that it provides – and I didn’t realize this until I got into the data – the percentage of women that play sports then go on to be in C-level positions, it’s dramatically higher among female athletes than it is those that don’t have an athletic background. And again, just opportunity. And you can like Title IX or dislike Title IX, but you have to recognize the fact that it has done a lot for women throughout its history. … What I recognized was that if we professionalize it, the first thing that’s going to be cut are the women’s sports and the Olympic sports.” Lots more from Campbell. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joined Front Office Sports Today and says when it comes to College Football Playoff expansion “selfishly, Ohio State could stay at four. … We could go back to four in most years, probably be okay. At 12, we should be okay. … But I’m a believer that for the good of the game, for the health of the game, for content, for high-level matchups, we should expand. Could we go to 16? Could we go to 20? Could we go to 24? … Nobody can argue with this — what’s wrong with more high level football? What’s wrong with more meaningful post-season content? What’s wrong with keeping the post-season alive for as many teams as possible? So to me, nobody can argue with that piece. Now how you get there – automatic qualifying spots, how many should the Big Ten have? And the SEC? That’s where everybody kind of gets hung up.” Bjork on NIL and sharing revenue: “Really the philosophy on NIL is embrace it at the highest level, be as aggressive as you can. … Everybody has the same ability to go up to the $20.5M, right? Everybody has that same number. How you spend that can all be variant depending on your institution. And then really the next race in this space, how do we create as much third-party NIL opportunities as possible? … That’s going to be the philosophy: Go all in, create opportunities.” (link)

Memphis has entered into revenue-sharing contracts with roughly 200 student-athletes, according to Tigers AD Ed Scott, who says the deals vary in length from six to 12 months. “One, so we don’t lock in our coaches to student-athletes beyond what our coaches may want. Two, to give our student-athletes flexibility as well. The last thing we want to do is be suing our student-athletes for breach of contract like we’ve seen some of our peers do. I don’t think that’s a good look, and being so new to this revenue-sharing process, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do at this time.” That said, Scott notes that “if the student-athlete enters the transfer portal or if there are other issues the student-athlete presents, we have recourse in those contracts to be able to do what we need to do to protect the institution and the athletic department.” Memphis football is 88% toward its football season ticket sales goal YTD, approximately $465K shy of $3.875M for FY26. The Tigers have sold 10,023 football season tickets to date – down from 10,151 last fiscal year. Men’s basketball has sold 4,229 season tickets for the 2025-26 campaign. Last fiscal year, the program sold 4,641 season tickets. (link)

Creighton AD Marcus Blossom announces the Bluejays have achieved a 95% season ticket renewal rate for men’s basketball, along with a 90% renewal rate for women’s volleyball. The women’s basketball program’s renewals are “slightly below our 90% target.” Blossom also notes the department has officially begun distributing revenue-share payments to student-athletes, and “as expected, the majority of revenue sharing will support our Men's Basketball program – our primary revenue driver. Our goal is to fund this program at a level consistent with the top-performing teams in the Big East and nationally.” (link)

New Mexico AD Fernando Lovo is open to any and all ideas to improve the football game day experience and tells the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Will Webber: “I told my team, just keep chipping away. Stay positive and no idea’s a bad idea.” Webber notes that in his initial staff meetings, Lovo welcomed suggestions while bringing in his own from his time at Texas, where the Longhorns have made Bevo Blvd. a staple of the game day experience. “It’s basically a massive party, a free fan-friendly place that has food vendors, drinks, games, kid activities, music and a parade for the school’s mascot and players on the way to the stadium,” per Webber, who adds: “[Lovo] immediately birthed Lobo Lane, which debuts with Saturday’s home opener against Idaho State at 1 p.m. It features a beer garden, food trucks, tents to sell merchandise, live music, a kids zone and even a giant outdoor TV screen to show other games around the country on Saturday.” Lovo says UNM season ticket sales are up 178% over last season and said he hopes every home game can attract 25K to 30K fans. Still, he cautions the staff to be patient and wait for results that might take a while to pay off. “Really, we just need to show the fans that we care.” (link)

Hawaii has received a $1M matching gift commitment from two-term UH Board of Regents Chair Gabriel Lee as part of the athletic department’s Giving Week campaign. In addition to the corner videoboards that hang beneath each of the four terraces in the Robins Center, courtside LED displays will also be replaced to ensure top-tier video quality throughout the arena with all boards linked to ensure accurate, identical scoring and timing data across all displays in the arena.
