Newman AD Kenyon Spears joined the JetCast as he enters his first year leading the department. Spears’ long-term vision is still a work in progress, having been hired at the end of June. As for what he is striving for in year one: “One, to do it the right way, to be competitive, and stay within your budget. There are a lot of areas where we can get better. There are a lot of areas we will get better, and so this is a learning year for all of us. I would say for our coaches, they understand that the level will get raised, but we will work through this year together to create some monster goals. But as far as me, specifically, I have to put us in the best position possible to grow our budgets and to grow our fundraising dollars, which will allow us to do a lot of great things.” On how he is approaching building the department and progress: “The biggest thing is you have to believe and you have to believe every day. You have to work at it to get better every day. I talked about this, like I said, last week I had two losses. I judge myself on a day-to-day basis and two losses were tough for me last week, but we regroup, we attack the day, we attack the next day and we do everything we can to win the day. If you continue to stack wins, the more times you stack wins, the better opportunities you're going to give yourself to look at it at the end of the year and be like, ‘You know what?’ It was pretty productive. It's a day-to-day grind. It's a day-to-day evaluation to be able to get to the finish line and be positive and be productive and we'll work at that. The biggest thing I shared with our coaches is you have to bring a great attitude and great energy every day. I'm going to have it; I'm going to bring it. If you don't, that's okay because things happen. I know there are things inside, outside, external things that may come about, but I don't ever want to cheat the day and cheat our kids.” More. Savannah State President Jermaine Whirl spoke about his vision for athletics during his 100-Day Address. “The way for us to be a consistent championship community is that we are going to think differently about how we do athletics. […] The big challenge is that the athletic world has been flipped over its head by the NIL. The challenges include the way and how we recruit athletes and things are not the same as they were four or five years ago.” Whirl continues: “One of the things we have to do is format something within our foundation to form an athletic association to get the big dollars. […] We want them to have the best of the best. The best locker rooms, the best coaching, the best training and we want to win.” (link)

The DI FBS Oversight Committee is recommending changing the football recruiting calendar to a single transfer portal window between January 2 and 11. “Another part of the recommendation would make the entire month of December a recruiting dead period (in which coaches can call, write, text or email prospects and their families but no on- or off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may occur). Jan. 5-31 would remain a recruiting period, when coaches can have contact with or evaluate prospects. […] The oversight committee also recommended a modification to the first date when prospective football student-athletes can receive written offers of financial aid or settlement-related benefits. Currently, prospective student-athletes can receive written offers beginning Aug. 1 before their senior year of high school. The recommendation would change the first date for written offers to Nov. 15 of the prospect's senior year in high school.” The proposal now heads to the DI Administrative Committee, which is set to vote before October 1. Shippensburg rolls out a new look, with the Raiders’ ship mark to remain the university’s primary mark. The new logo includes an anchor and the addition of light blue as a secondary color. AD Jeff Michaels: “A logo that is unique and identifiable is very important to an athletic program. The new anchor symbolizes the strength and resilience of our student-athletes and represents the forward momentum that is required in competition.” CLC assisted with the process. (link)

Ahead of Saturday’s home football opener, Adams State announces a handful of fan experience upgrades. The Grizzlies have partnered with Hudl Ticketing to handle its digital ticketing. Tailgating will move to the ASU Practice Field while construction is ongoing around campus. ASU will also have a Bear Garden in the north end zone. (link)
