UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, Ohio State AD Ross Bjork, Duke AD Nina King and Dartmouth AD Mike Harrity participated in Bloomberg Power Players panel discussions yesterday about the changes to and direction of college sports…
➤ Jarmond touched on the risk vs. the commitment of supporting Olympic sports: “We at UCLA, we have a proud tradition with our Olympic sports. Since 1928, we've had 436 Bruins make 661 Olympic teams. If we're not the highest, we're in the top two in the country as far as producing Olympians. … So we take our investment in our Olympic sports very seriously. That said, the financial model has changed, the realities have changed, and we're extremely excited to be hosting LA 28 the Olympics in ‘28 and having them on campus in Westwood. But there is a concern after LA 28, what programs around the country are going to do with their Olympic sports. We’re going to keep investing. We think it's very important to continue to produce Olympians, champions, and that's important. But at the same time, the financial realities are changing. And so, you know, what we're talking about more is we need to really study, in my opinion, what other countries do as far as how they fund Olympic sports and take those learnings from other countries and apply it to what we do here in the United States. … If we don't figure out a better way to fund Olympic sports – because that's the issue. The issue is the funding model for Olympic sports. And I think that's got to adjust.” (link)
➤ The discussion also pivoted to private equity, with King acknowledging: “Yes, the financial model in college athletics is stressed. The way that we are operating as a business model, I mean, you all, if we opened our books to you, you would think it's a joke the way that we are operating. And so we need to figure out how to build something more sustainable so we can support broad-based programming. … We are exploring all kinds of revenue models, and that certainly includes private equity. In the traditional sense, I'm not convinced that it would work. But we're talking to a lot of folks to kind of figure out if there are hybrid models. Are there unique ways that we could do something to infuse capital cash into our athletic departments and into our universities? I mean, I think there are a lot of revenue opportunities on campus as well. And so how do we kind of create that synergy with campus to continue to build revenue? We are heavily reliant on philanthropy and, you know, but if we could have been raising an extra $20.5M a year, we would have been. And so I don't think, you know, street philanthropy is the answer…and I think private equity is on the table for sure.” (link)
➤ Bjork weighs in on the same private equity topic, noting that Duke is a public school and the “question that I have as a public institution is what are we selling? Because I'm owned by the state of Ohio. … The conference model to me is a way to explore it. Same questions, though. What am I giving up at Ohio State? … What future revenues perhaps would private equity want to take? What control would they need to have or have to have? Is it passive investments? … We're studying it because what Nina said, you know, you have to look for alternative sources of revenue.” (link)
➤ Harrity said the following about the men’s basketball team’s unionization effort: “Dartmouth has a long history of supporting unions, including student worker unions. Let me first say that. But as I said earlier, we view the athletics endeavor first and foremost at its core as educational in nature. There are certainly examples [of] athletic departments where driving revenue is one of the highest priorities. That’s not our model. As President Sian Beilock has said in op-eds nationally – and we work very closely together – is that we believe and support unions. Our student-athletes are not employees and we'll go all the way to the Supreme Court to show that. … I'll tell you too, speaking to a couple student athletes – without revealing too much of our conversations post-withdrawal – it was really fascinating because first and foremost, again, we're an educational institution, and they learned a lot through that. They learned a lot by working together, by working with the union, reflecting on ‘is this who we are?’ … I think a lot of personal growth came from the experience for everybody all around.” (link)

The FBS Oversight Committee’s vote to approve a single 10-day football transfer window in January has been met with praise by many in the sport. One Power 4 GM tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “With December being dead and in-house contracts, this is huge for retention.” An SEC GM who applauds the move offers the following scenario: “Let’s say we agree to deal with player A and get a signed agreement, but because of the calendar, he doesn’t report to school for 20 more days. On Day 16, school X calls because they missed on players B and C, and offer him more because they are desperate. We’re now back to square one with player A, and they hold all the leverage to re-negotiate. That’s not sustainable.” The SEC GM adds: “Agents are going to start calling in the next three to four weeks. Most of these guys that go in already know they’re going in. I don’t think tampering is going to be as big an impact on this as it seems — most are already doing it. And it actually gets worse the longer the portal is open because people miss and then go searching.” Meanwhile, an agent with more than 10 P4 transfers this offseason adds: “It’s a good thing. I don’t care about tampering; it’s like it will be now or never. You won’t have to deal with players who take forever to make up their mind. We will always find ways to gain leverage.” (link)

Florida State is in “deep negotiations” to bring three to four events to Doak Campbell Stadium, according to Seminoles AD Michael Alford, who tells trustees: “Some, I can't announce who they are, but they're going to be really big." Events could include anything from concerts to dirtbike racing, and Alford adds: "I've always said January to April is going to be dirt season at Doak. We want to do as many events and get as many people in this community as possible." (link)

The One Pack Jackpot is a charitable initiative that supports the Arkansas State Athletics Department and its student-athletes. A-State has also implemented a new feature at its concession stands this year that presents patrons with the option to round purchases up to the nearest dollar if they choose to make a donation to the One Pack Fund. For non-ticketed sports, fans will be able to make an "admission donation" to the One Pack Fund in support of these programs by scanning a QR code located at the entry gate. “As much as the ACC’s soul remains on the basketball courts of Tobacco Road, its future rests in major wins on the football field,” writes The Athletic’s Matt Baker who recently followed ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips around on “one of the most important opening weekends of his conference’s 72-year history” which provided “five chances for statement victories that would elevate the league’s reputation.” Baker notes that “there are only so many chances for one conference to differentiate itself from the rest. Only so many opportunities to seize the marquee wins that entice TV partners and influence College Football Playoff decisions. Only so many years before the next round of media rights negotiations and conference realignment threaten to destabilize the industry and, perhaps, Phillips’ league.” While the ACC posted just a 2-3 record during Phillips’ road trip, the league gained a CFP contender at Florida State, didn’t lose one at Clemson and solidified one at Miami. They must carry the ACC from here to create the blockbuster matchups and postseason success the conference needs to keep going.” Phillips on the weekend: “Nobody’s handing any trophies out after Week 1. However, the narrative starts to reset.” (link)

CBS Sports’ John Talty writes that Duke is now “all-in on football” in a way it hasn’t been before after an offseason that saw the Blue Devils land former Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah in a deal believed to be worth $8M over two seasons. Fresh off a 9-4 record in 2024, Blue Devils AD Nina King says the program’s offseason moves showed the world that Duke was “going for it.” King: “We've got this men's basketball program that is absolutely elite, top of the top in the brand. But why can't football be right there with men's basketball? We're here, we want to compete. It's not title-or-bust, but can we play at [the College Football Playoff] level? Absolutely, I think we can get there.” The Blue Devils signed four four-stars in its most recent recruiting class, including the school’s highest-ranked signee in history, edge rusher Bryce Davis. Per Talty, such a player “probably wouldn't have gone to Duke in the past … but Duke thinks it is selling something very few, if any other program, can offer with a top-ranked academic university that also (now) cares about football.” Duke Football HC Manny Diaz: “We're in a different era now, and kids are making choices that they just didn't make 10 years ago. And that's going to disrupt this game, and I think in a good way, by the way. I think it's going to be super exciting. I think it already is and way less predictable than it's been." (link)

Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois joins the JohnWallStreet podcast and frames the athletic department as a $150M enterprise that needed a CEO-level reset. Reed-Francois notes the Wildcats slashed the inherited deficit from ~$39M to ~$5M through a line-by-line budget review, debt and contract renegotiations (including a Nike deal saving $2.5M per year), and trimming roughly 17 positions, many of which were unfilled. UA also brought commercial rights in-house via a 501(c)(3) with an LLC subsidiary, and Reed-Francois says: “The first year I think we hit about 114%. … This year it’s only August 21 and we’ve already hit 100% of our goal.” Furthermore, philanthropy is up 47% YoY, and 81% of the athletic department’s partners are Tucson-based. Reed-Francois on her operating ethos: “We run a $150M business and we have to recognize that as the CEO of this business…you have to look at where are you spending your money and are you maximizing your revenue. … If you are spending this dollar…would you spend it if it was your own dollar?” As it relates to the Wildcats’ long-term strategy, Reed-Francois explains the focus will be on year-round facility monetization and premiumization: “We want to be able to do one big concert every year at Arizona Stadium. McKale is a little bit harder. … There’s some great opportunities there, whether it could be bunker suites, a club, etc.” Full podcast. (link)

Discussing the importance of Maryland’s non-revenue programs and if they can keep up in the current college athletics landscape, Terrapins AD Jim Smith offers to the Baltimore Sun’s Taylor Lyons: “I see it in about all 20 of our teams. They all have the chance to be incredibly successful. And so how do we bring the resources to the table to make them all successful? That doesn’t mean they all can be successful all at once at the exact same time. But building a plan to where we can make sure we’re competitive in all the sports that we compete in is the goal. Investing in men’s and women’s lacrosse or field hockey or soccer or gymnastics or wrestling, it’s all important. Golf, tennis, all of it. I’m a believer that you can do it all. I’m not an or guy. I’m an and guy. We can do this, and we can do that. We don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. Can we do it all at once? No. But we can do it all. That’s what I believe.” (link)

Ross Dellenger has the latest on the EA Sports’ College Football ‘27 licensing agreement for On3, noting that “since February, nearly 4K power conference football players – many of them from blueblood programs like Georgia, Alabama and Oregon – have signed their exclusive video game rights over to … Pathway Sports & Entertainment, a startup company focused on monetizing athlete NIL rights and … offering players more money than EA. Pathway has paid out more than $6M to these football players with, presumably, the intention to negotiate a better deal for players – with royalties – from EA Sports. It worked – somewhat. EA, not-so-conveniently, increased its base fee to match Pathway’s offer to players but without royalties.” The issue with EA Sports’ new player contract, according to Dellenger, is that, in part, “the video game developer has not struck a deal with Pathway to ascertain the video game rights of players who signed the Pathway agreement – a move that may put at risk the inclusion of those players in the College Football 27 game.” According to those familiar with the situation, Pathway has reached out to EA and has been engaged with the company.” However, a person with knowledge of the situation told Dellenger: “As it stands right now, EA does not have a relationship with Pathway,” while another inquired, “why is EA not negotiating with Pathway and the players?” (link)

Meanwhile, on the hoops front, EA Sports has rescinded its offer to schools for a standalone college basketball game. According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, EA Sports VP of Commercial Partnerships and Licensing Sean O’Brien has indicated the company is pulling out because some schools had decided to work with rival publisher 2K Sports in an NBA game. From O’Brien’s memo: “Given there are some schools choosing to accept the 2K Sports proposal for inclusion in NBA 2K, the offer to be included in a college basketball video game will unfortunately have to be rescinded. Everyone at EA Sports is disappointed that we all couldn’t find an acceptable path forward, but we appreciate your support in trying to bring a standalone college basketball game with all men’s and women’s Division I institutions and student athletes, conferences as well as the NCAA, in a way that fans have told us they want. We really appreciate your support. Good luck with back to school and an exciting start to the football season.” (link)

Nike is launching a new campaign called “Why do it?” taking “aim at the pervasiveness of cringe culture, which often frames earnest effort as uncool,” according to Fast Company’s Jeff Beer. Nike CMO Nicole Graham explains: “Those three words (Just Do It) mean so much to us, but we can’t just be holier-than-thou about it,” says Nike chief marketing officer Nicole Graham. “We have to make sure that those three words are resonating with each generation. … Fear of failure and fear of trying, and terms like, ‘Don’t be a try-hard,’ ‘You’re so cringe,’ are all reserved for anyone who is showing passion for something. So we wanted to take those three words and make sure we’re contemporizing the values of what they mean.” Graham also notes the new campaign is just one part of a broader global effort, as the company shifts back to dividing itself into teams focusing on specific sports. “I see already how quickly that success can happen, and the momentum right now is insane. The running team was the first, and then the football team, now basketball and cricket. We have made this large company feel very, very small and intimate, so I’m incredibly excited and optimistic.” Also from Graham: “We have to make sure that we’re heroing our biggest athletes and making them feel accessible, but we also have to take accessible individuals and make them feel like heroes.” (link)

The Big 12 is reportedly entering into a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Allstate, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who adds that while exact deal terms weren’t immediately available, “the agreement is believed to be one of the two most significant commercial deals in conference history.” The arrangement is set to include the creation of the “Allstate Championship Series” -- a year-round collaboration between the league and company that will see points awarded to member institutions based on performance in conference championships, graduation rates, academic and student services and community engagement – and the awarding of the “Allstate Commissioner’s Cup.” The company will become the presenting sponsor of all Big 12 Olympic sport championships and receive integration across the league’s football and men’s and women’s basketball championships.
