A group of NESCAC parents are intending to sue the conference over its Football roster limits, per In The D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi. Rossi reports the issue stems from the conference reinstating its roster limit now that COVID-impacted players have phased out and the league decided to increase its limit from 75 to 84. “Despite the parents’ call to action, the NESCAC Presidents last week reaffirmed the 84-person roster limit for football while still instituting no roster limits on any other sports. In addition, according to sources, the NESCAC is fearful that schools that had the most parental involvement in the letters cited above will voluntarily breach the limits this year, leading to the Presidents requiring their NESCAC Athletic Directors to create and agree on sanctions for roster limit violations. Those new sanctions may be announced as early as this Tuesday. According to ITH’s anonymous source, ‘[N]o one's clear whether the sanctions are going to be heavy and draconian. If you carry more than 84 players…then you might be precluded from postseason play. You [might not] be eligible for a championship. We don't know what the sanctions will be. On the other end of the spectrum, it could be a wrist slap. It could be window dressing. Who knows?’” Over 300 parents have signed letters seeking change, including one with specified legal arguments: “Breach of Implied Contract: The recruitment process and prior season participation created reasonable expectations that roster cuts may violate [law], potentially exposing NESCAC institutions to civil action and reputational damage. […] Implementing roster limits disproportionately affecting football compared to other sports may violate equal protection requirements under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act. … Current federal regulations state that ‘college athletic departments with $50,000,000 or less in revenue…or that do not have any revenue-generating sports should not disproportionately reduce scholarship opportunities or roster spots…’ NESCAC institutions appear to fall under these protections.” (link)

Isthmus Bowl and Lakefront Bowl Founder Mike Shaw joins the new Voices In The Stands Podcast to discuss the DIII Midwest Bowl Series. The idea was a passion project for Shaw, who credits WIAC Commissioner Danielle Harris with being the first commissioner to support the idea. Shaw solicited the title sponsorship for the Isthmus Bowl via a letter to Culver’s Co-Founder Craig Culver, who responded within three days. In the lead-up to the games, Shaw says preparing to staff and run the events is a second full-time job, with raising money for sponsorships serving as the most time-consuming responsibility. This allows Shaw to reimburse participating teams with between 80 to 90% of gameday costs. On the impact of participating teams on attendance: “I think what really makes a big difference, Matt, is when you get one or two different teams every year. I think that makes a big difference because then people get to see what the bowl game actually means. So we've had six different teams in the Isthmus Bowl the first four years. We've had six teams experience it and if I get just one new team every year, I'm a happy camper because that'll help with attendance.” (link)

➤ John Carroll will dedicate its 125K square-foot Athletic, Wellness & Event tomorrow. The $60-70M facility includes a six-lane track; locker rooms and dedicated training space for wrestling, track & Field and soccer; an athletic training space; exercise science labs and more. Director of Recreation Matt Clark: “We made this investment initially out of necessity. It was needed for our athletics teams. We were super competitive, but we didn’t have the best facilities in our conference. […] The board and our university leadership felt really strongly kind of coming out of COVID that we needed to invest. Our focus from the start was, ‘If we’re trying to go national — which our university is trying to do — we needed to get our facilities in a place where the university was attractive to incoming students. And it helps retain our students who are already here.” (link)

The NCAA announces that the National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship field is expanding to 12 teams, beginning next spring. The format will consist of four non-predetermined regional sites with three teams competing at each site. Two teams will compete in a regional-round with the third team receiving a bye and will compete against the winner in a regional final-round match. Winners from each of the regional final-round sites will advance to compete at the finals site. Additionally, SIAC (DII) Commissioner Anthony Holloman has been selected to serve as committee chair. Higher Ed Dive’s Natalie Schwarz reports that the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee has proposed a 15% cut to the U.S. Department of Education’s budget for FY26, with Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) framing the proposal as being in line with Trump administration priorities. According to Schwarz, “the House panel’s plan would reduce funding for the Education Department to $67B. That’s in line with Trump’s own budget proposal, which critics argued would reduce access to college.” It would also “eliminate all funding for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant program … make deep cuts to the Federal Work-Study program, which provides part-time jobs to college students who demonstrate sufficient financial need … embrace Trump’s proposal to cut funding to the Office for Civil Rights, which investigates discrimination, harassment and sexual violence complaints on college campuses … and zero out funding for several grant and fellowship programs administered by the Education Department, including those that support teacher preparation, campus-based childcare for students and foreign language instruction.” The plan will, however, “preserve the maximum Pell Grant, in contrast with the White House’s plan to reduce it by roughly 23% to $5,710” and “keep funding level for TRIO and Gear Up, two programs that help low-income and other disadvantaged students prepare for and complete college.” Schwarz notes that “House lawmakers will need to eventually square their proposals with the Senate, which is considering a different proposal that would largely maintain the Education Department’s current level of discretionary funding. Lawmakers face a government shutdown if they don’t fund the government or pass a stopgap budget measure by Oct. 1.” (link)

The degree to which companies in the sports industry have adopted AI remains varied, according to SBJ’s Rob Schaefer, who observes that “where most organizational leaders agree, however, is that reconciling this transformative and constantly evolving technology is a core business priority, particularly in investigating ways it can streamline operations.” X Games CEO Jeremy Bloom: “One of [our five biggest company objectives] is master AI to boost efficiency and impact. That is a leg on the stool, it’s not a peripheral goal or an afterthought.” Sports Innovation Lab Co-Founder/CEO Josh Walker on how teams and leagues are specifically utilizing AI: “There is no pattern. It would make perfect sense for the leagues to centralize the services that they are building for AI and roll it out to the teams. The teams never wait for that. You have some enterprising data science team or some enterprising CTO at the team level – they’re going to try stuff faster than the leagues do.” TKO EVP of Innovation Alon Cohen says the company is taking a hands-on approach to discovery and education, bringing in an advanced prompt engineer for AI training with “natural early adopters.” Cohen: “The next version of almost every business application that we use has a heavy AI component to it. So, every team is identifying places where they think they can be successful, and when they go through their next upgrade cycle – or we consolidate to a new tool that’s also a good moment for an upgrade cycle – those tools become available.” More.
