ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston joins the District 2 Sports Podcast to dive into a number of topics, including the disparity in DIII, the league’s deal with FloSports and more. During a recent meeting of DIIICA, NADIIIAA and NCAA leaders, the topic of creating a subdivision in DIII was broached, as it had been during the mid-2000s. Bankston: “We had a really healthy conversation in this meeting about that and it was intriguing because one of the athletic directors basically said he uses the word in Division III; he uses the word empathy. It's interesting because I do think people make an effort to help everyone. […] I do see it in Division III. I see it in our own league that people want, despite the fact they're competitive and they want to win; despite the fact they want to win, there's an empathy there from a standpoint that's not sympathy. It's ‘Let's help each other.’” On the deal with Flo, Bankston believes the agreement creates two opportunities: expanded reach with nine DIII conferences on the platform, in addition to a number of DI and DII leagues, and: “They're going to help us augment what our sports communication professionals are already doing. So they're going to help us tell our story, and in doing that, they're going to do that on a greater platform than what we're currently doing now. So that's the belief from a delivery perspective that that's going to be successful.” Bankston notes the ODAC’s deal has a look-in after two or three years, adding: “This is an experiment for Flo. They are trying to grow the untouched market and clearly they wouldn’t be doing this if it was in this altruistic environment. […] We hope it’s a win-win for everybody, that it continues to grow our viewership. I think part of the metrics will be viewership and comparison numbers. How do you define viewership? So a lot of times you can look at numbers and we can look at numbers in our basketball tournament and tell you that there were 4,000 views. Well, what I really want to know is how many unique IP addresses did I have because who watched for five minutes and got off, who came back for five minutes, and who came back for five more minutes? That's three views instead of just one. So I think how we define viewership is going to be super important for us to know. In my opinion, it's who stays to watch the game.” Tons more. (link)

In The D3FB Huddle’s Frank Rossi updates on the proposed penalties for NESCAC members who exceed the 84-person Football roster limit. “Among the sanctions formulated Tuesday (currently unconfirmed by any official NESCAC resources), any team that rosters more than 84 players will face a banishment from the ability to win the conference title for an undisclosed amount of time, and the team would face three seasons of reduced recruitment ability (with one source stating the number of students per class year would be capped at 18 each for those three years). Based on information provided to ITH since Sunday, at least two of the NESCAC teams will be forced to cut an unexpectedly substantial number of players based on the renewed insistence on the single-sport limit.” (link)

DC Discussions…
➤ On3’s Pete Nakos reports that the House of Representatives could vote on the SCORE Act as early as next week, while adding that amendments could also be coming to the legislation via the Rules Committee. With obstacles to passage still remaining on Capitol Hill, Nakos notes that “seven Democrats are needed to overcome the filibuster and reach the 60-vote margin for any bill passage in the U.S. Senate, which appears unlikely at this point. The legislation would also establish a one-time transfer rule. The SCORE Act has faced pushback from players’ associations, including the NFLPA, MLBPA, NHLPA and MLSPA. Four state attorneys general – Florida, New York, Ohio and Tennessee – also sent a letter to Congress this week urging the SCORE Act to be rejected.” From the letter: “Simply put, the SCORE Act consolidates too much power in the hands of the NCAA. The NCAA is a cartel that has consistently abused its monopolistic control even in the absence of a legislative blank check to do so.” (link)
➤ House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and other House Republicans, along with NCAA and conference lobbyists, have been “pushing hard to ensure they have enough votes to pass” the SCORE Act, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who notes it’s unclear at this point whether the bill would pass the lower chamber of Congress. One congressional aide tells Christovich that “not just Scalise, but the entire lobbying apparatus…is working overdrive.” While the bill could theoretically pass along party lines (Republicans have a six-seat majority), some GOP members including Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) and Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX), criticized the SCORE Act on social media Sunday night, appearing to follow the lead of Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell. Meanwhile, Congressman Lance Gooden (R-TX), one of the bill’s co-sponsors, adds: “This bill needs work. Looking forward to thoughtful debate and a finished product we can all be proud of.” Christovich also notes that “two Democrats who signed onto the original bill as cosponsors in July, Representative Janelle Bynum (D-OR) and Rep. Shomari Figures (D-AL), would presumably vote for it. Since then, three other Democrats have signed on as well. One place the pro-SCORE Act lobby is looking for votes, one source tells FOS: the Congressional Black Caucus. Two conferences representing historically black colleges and universities—the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference—have been lobbying CBC members to vote yes, the source says.” (link)

NACC Commissioner/DIIICA Officiating Committee Member Jeff Ligney: “Through this partnership, we’re able to take advantage of NASO’s established ‘Say Yes to Officiating’ infrastructure and focus it squarely onto new officiating recruits from the large pool of DIII athletes. It’s imperative that we give those athletes a pathway into sports officiating. Their experiences at the DIII level of competition will make them invaluable as they move up through the various competitive levels as officials.” (link)
