All Things CIAA:

+ The CIAA Board of Directors has approved the addition of Bluefield State, starting next academic year. Additionally, "The Board approved entering a multi-year media rights deal to maximize exposure for all CIAA-sponsored sports, championships, its members, and our student-athletes' visibility. Details are forthcoming and will be shared once parameters and terms are solidified." (link)

+ The board has also terminated Chowan's affiliate FB membership, stating the decision reflects "the direction of the conference regarding membership growth and stability." CU President Peterson: "We are committed to getting our football program conference affiliation and feel confident that this will happen sooner rather than later. We are exploring all options for conference membership because competing as an independent is not a part of our future." (link)

East Central names Interim AD/WBB HC Cole to the permanent AD post, effective January 1. ECU President Godwin: "Matt has been with the University for nine years serving as our women's basketball head coach. He has earned the respect of our leadership team, coaches, and our athletes. From the NCAA:

+ The NCAA DII Committee on Infractions ruled that Missouri Southern State failed to monitor its football program, which committed multiple NCAA violations over two academic years, including impermissible recruiting inducements and benefits, academic misconduct and violations of countable athletically related activities. Penalties include three years probation (thru Nov. 2, 2025), a $5K fine, FB scholarship reduction to 34.2 for 2022-23, vacation of FB records for games in which ineligible S-As participated, a one-week prohibition on off-campus recruiting during the 2022-23 year and show-causes orders for former staff members. + The NCAA DII Committee on Infractions determined that West Chester committed NCAA violations when it maintained financial and managerial control over a local sports club and allowed a coaching staff member to coach at the athletics-sponsored club that included prospective men's and women's swimming and diving student-athletes. Penalties include two years probation, a $25K fine, delayed recruitment of S&D S-As by one year and inability to rent its facilities to a local sports club for two years. (link)

+ The DII FB Committee has issued a public reprimand to Ferris State S-A Hunt-Thompson and suspended him the remainder of the playoffs for striking an individual with his helmet following the Bulldogs' quarterfinal win over Grand Valley State. FSU has the right to appeal the ruling. (link)

Sport Sponsorship:

+ Seattle Pacific postponed the addition of WGOLF as its 13th sport until Fall 2024. Vice Provost for Student Formation and Community Engagement Jordan: "As we are going through some leadership transitions, we have decided to delay the start of our women's golf program for one academic year. Although this is disappointing, we believe that finalizing other decisions first is crucial for this program and others in SPU Athletics.” SPU plans to build an indoor practice facility in the northeast annex of Royal Brougham Pavilion. + With Beach VB set to join the Chaminade line-up in Spring 2024, the student paper reports “most of the beach program will consist of indoor players as the new sport is allotted only one scholarship.” HC Kabalis-Hoke notes that the Silver Swords will be collaborating with Hawaii (DI) to put together tournaments. + Davenport will offer 15 scholarships for both Men’s and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee programs through the athletic department for competition beginning in Fall 2023. Inaugural HC Zaagman: “Everything is fully funded – you don’t have to pay for your own cleats, uniform, travel fees, and we have our own trainers, full time coaches. Whereas no other program in the world is offering that, and on top of that we get to offer scholarships.” Zaagman also hopes to “convert” five student-athletes for each team from current DU athletic programs: “So, is there someone who played soccer but doesn’t want to play anymore, or maybe someone who played football but they didn’t get a scholarship offer? Well, we can offer a lot of money to play ultimate.” On the potential growth of the sport, plainly: “From a financial perspective, it’s the cheapest sport a university could adopt.” (link)

Sioux Falls names MSU Mankato FB AC Glogowski as its next HC. Cougars AD Gohl: "Coach Glogowski brings a wealth of experience and expertise to USF and his passion and drive for excellence in the NSIC will continue here at Sioux Falls. He knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level as well as in the NSIC. Coach Glogowski leaves an impression with any group he meets and cares about his players and staff on and off the field. Furthermore, he has a way of holding expectations high, but also building camaraderie in the pursuit of lofty goals. He's a man of faith and servant leadership that we know will do great things here. Opendorse announces a new “NIL Book” that provides earnings expectations for college athletes. The book, however, is only available to current school clients who contribute data from NIL disclosures and transactions.The book includes expected NIL earnings for each position group by division, including FBS, Power 5, Group of 5, FCS, NCAA D-II, NCAA D-III, NAIA and NJCAA. Earnings are also divided by conference. It will be distributed twice per year, with the first version expected in January. The latest figures reveal that the top Power 5 quarterbacks earn an average of nearly $200K in NIL money annually, while running backs at that level pull in $130K. (link)
