The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright reports that Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg’s contract status will be “addressed in due time,” with OSU Senior VP for System Affairs Kyle Wray remarking Friday after the OSU/A&M Board of Regents meeting: “Chad is committed to our student-athletes and our coaches, and our president (Jim Hess) is committed to Chad’s energy and dedication to them. I think the contract will be addressed in due time. … When it’s time to have that discussion, it’ll happen.” Weiberg originally inked a four-year deal, paying him $750K annually, when he was promoted to the AD position back on July 1, 2021. Wright notes that “no OSU officials have expressed public concern with Weiberg’s performance” and “no specific reasons have been provided regarding why the contract was allowed to lapse.” Asked if he expected Weiberg to receive a new contract, Wray responded: “That would be putting words into the mouth of the president and the board. But it’ll be addressed in due time.” (link)

In response to U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell’s (D-WA) recent letter to the Senate Commerce Committee entitled “The Growing College Sports Funding Gap,” Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell writes: “We were impressed and encouraged by the report released by Sen. Cantwell. … She is a well-informed voice on this topic and will be a great partner in finding the right solutions to the serious threats faced by women’s sports, Olympic sports, and by all athletic departments, both small and large. It may not be well known, but Sen. Cantwell has a professional background in sports media, so she has deep understanding and relevant experience in this realm, and is one of the few on the Hill who has accurately identified the economic issues in college sports as being the underlying cause of the symptoms we see more prominently highlighted in the media (transfer portal, NIL, etc). We encourage everyone to study her report, and encourage Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Cantwell and their colleagues in the Senate to work together in finding a solution that will fully and comprehensively Save College Sports and preserve the incredible benefit that it provides to this great country.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joins the Next Up with Adam Breneman podcast to talk about topics ranging from his first days in Columbus to the future of NCAA governance. Regarding the $20.5M rev-share cap, Bjork notes that with scholarships “we essentially had $18M and we took four sports, women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, and football. Of course, football is going to drive the market. So they got a majority of that $18M, but we want basketball to be competitive. We want volleyball to be competitive. So we tried to have a good matrix, a good spread to make sure that each sport had enough to work with.” Bjork also posits that “the next sort of arms race I think in our enterprise is going to be who can build out the third-party NIL system the best. … And then it has to go through all the clearinghouse piece. So we have that system built. We’re monetizing it now. We’re building out the resources for that. … Ohio State – we always can be on the right side of the equation, we can always be on the leading edge. How we build it out, how it’s structured, those are all the things that we’re all working on.” On the governance piece, Bjork believes we need a national governing body, continuing: “The problem is the way we’ve been governed has led us into the courtroom, and we haven’t been very successful in the courtroom and thus, we’re sitting here today. […] I do think the NCAA can govern academics. I think they can govern playing rules. I think they can run championships. I do think our conferences have to have much more of a voice. … We also need some federal legislation to codify a lot of these things. And without that, we could still be in the courtroom.” When hiring new coaches, Bjork looks for a proven track record of winning, a demonstrated ability to recruit and a commitment to doing things the right way, adding: “Can they understand that there’s still the academic piece, the fundamentals of college sports, but also be able to talk about NIL and revenue sharing and the ability to almost negotiate, if you will? You have to have that skill set now.” Full interview. (link)

Cal Co-ADs Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O’Neill pen a letter to fans, writing that they’ve “worked to revamp our organizational structure and establish a refreshed leadership model for our external units. … Our collective goals in this area will be to increase attendance, viewership and revenue, and you'll continue to see us roll out new initiatives throughout the year. We have officially entered the revenue sharing era of college sports, and with the support of our community, we are committed to providing the resources necessary to recruit and support elite student-athletes in this new environment. We're thrilled to report that through your support, we've unlocked the Chancellor's $8M match for 2025-26 revenue sharing for football, men's basketball and women's basketball, and we are fully implementing the NCAA House settlement.” On their partnership with Golden Bears Football GM Ron Rivera: “Ron has full leadership of our football program -- including oversight of personnel, budget, and strategic direction -- while we lead our 29 other varsity sports and support units and staff, which also support football. We meet with Ron weekly and communicate daily. Our collaboration is grounded in a shared vision, aligned values, a deep respect for teamwork and a love for this amazing university. We are fully committed to supporting Ron as he leads the football program forward, while we all continue to elevate our entire department.” More. (link)

Commenting on West Georgia’s announced reclassification move to Division I, Wolves’ AD Jason Carmichael writes: “Unabashed about this vision for West Georgia Athletics. This is West Georgia. If you live here, or have a degree from West Georgia or just love the place from afar because of some other reason, we should be the NCAA Division I team you root for first. The coaches, student-athletes and staff closest to the day-to-day WANT that to be the reality and collectively all of us in the West Georgia region NEED that to be the reality. Not some other institution. The reclassification to Division I is a long road. But it's the right road. Come along with us for the journey. YOUR Division I school needs YOU.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo examines why Oklahoma is playing Temple on the road in football this weekend and notes the date was made after the Owls were coming off two straight 10-win seasons under former HC Matt Rhule, and “then-athletic director Pat Kraft gave chief of staff Sean Padden an assignment: Find a blue blood, a traditional power, one of those programs with easily recognizable helmets, to agree to play a road game against Temple so they could tell school and city officials, ‘If you build it, they will come.’” Padden tells Russo “I called all over the place. I called USC. I called UCLA. I called Alabama. I called Florida. The guy from Florida, I can’t remember who it was, but he was the only one that was most honest with me. He was like, ‘Sean, you just won 10 games. I don’t know what’s going on up there.’” The Owls found an “enthusiastic taker” in OU, which in 2016 agreed to a two-for-one series. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione explains: “We were talking to other schools about perhaps playing a two-for-one matchup but playing [a road game] in an NFL stadium.” Castiglione adds that he liked the idea of giving OU fans in the Northeast Corridor a chance to see the team close to home. There was also a financial incentive for the Sooners, as Russo notes that instead of OU spending upward of $4M on three separate [guarantee games at home], it agreed to pay Temple $1M for this deal. Castiglione: “The financial components made all the sense in the world for us to consider that.” Such deals, however, may be going the way of the dodo bird, according to Gridiron Founder Dave Brown, who cites the influx of FBS teams reducing market scarcity and the SEC’s move to a nine-game slate. “Nobody’s going to have the pressure to pay huge guarantees because in some years there’s 15 games available for sale that there aren’t buyers for.” More from Russo. More Gridiron Decisions…
➤ Swamp247’s Zach Goodall reports Florida has agreed in principle to “cancel its future home-and-home series with Arizona State (2028, 2031), and has fully terminated its contracts to North Carolina State (2026, 2032) and California (2026-27), as a result of the Southeastern Conference's plan to enact a nine-game league schedule beginning in 2026.” The agreements for the three home-and-homes included a clause allowing the Gators to cancel without penalty in the event the league moved to a nine-game conference slate. Goodall notes “the potential for other cancellations, or lack thereof, of future Florida football out-of-conference matchups is currently considered ‘fluid,’ given the recency of the SEC's decision to change its league scheduling format.” (link)
➤ West Virginia announces the “Backyard Brawl” football series with Pittsburgh has been scheduled for four additional years from 2033-36. The new addition is set to begin in 2033 at Pitt’s Acrisure Stadium, move to WVU’s Milan Puskar Stadium in 2034, go back to Pittsburgh in 2035 and wrap up in Morgantown in 2036. West Virginia AD Wren Baker: “It's always a great day when you can extend one of the best rivalries in all of college sports. I want to thank Pitt Athletic Director Allan Greene for his help in extending the ‘Backyard Brawl,’ and there is no doubt that today's announcement is a win for not only fans of the two Universities but for all of college football.” (link)

James Moore Digital President Daniel Shorstein visits with Katie Davis and Ken Kurdziel on the latest episode of News & Brews Sports Biz to discuss AI in college athletics finance and had this to say on practical applications for AI in college athletics: “There’s some … that I think are really valuable when you’re looking at budget management and identifying different paths you might want to take and tradeoffs. One way that AI … is helpful is as a strategic partner, strategic adviser. Let’s say you give it a few different scenarios you’re considering around shifting things around in a budget, given the goals you’re trying to achieve, some of the challenges you’re trying to overcome and some of the stakeholders you’re trying to appease through that process. The generative AI output may be very helpful in giving you some guidance and tips on what direction to go there and how to approach it. You’re still the one driving the ship. You’re going to make the decisions, but it’s almost like this additional partner you can bounce ideas off of. … If you have detailed transactions that you’re not able to understand what they are or how to address them, and the rules engine you’re trying to build using machine learning isn’t working correctly, generative AI, in that sense, can be useful for doing a data cleansing aspect of it. … You can build a prompt or a custom ChatGPT that you can feed in these transactions that have decent, but not good enough, data within it and give it some context and guidance and that can actually enhance your data and clean up your data using intelligence to categorize them or flag them in certain ways that you can then use them a lot better and more efficiently. I think there’s almost endless ways you can use it. … From an athletic standpoint, it’s a lot of strategy things there. A lot of time-saving opportunities. … It can really just give you a leg up as an organization with limited time and limited resources but step it up quite a bit with the help of generative AI. More. While running numerous job searches simultaneously is standard procedure for athletic departments, Illinois recently found that their traditional process was reactive. They would often post a job and hope that quality candidates saw it and decided to apply. While the timeline for hires was acceptable, the leadership team knew they were missing out on a huge segment of the talent market: the high-performing, diverse candidates who weren't actively looking for a new role. Enter Collegiate Sports Connect’s Talent Finder. Using this powerful tool, Illini hiring managers leverage Connect’s database of over 25,000 profiles to build targeted candidate pools based on specific needs, including salary requirements, which are critical for state institutions with posted ranges. Illini Director of Human Resources and Employee Experience Krissy Duran: “This shift has allowed us to prioritize building the strongest candidate pools rather than focusing solely on speed. With Connect providing an easily accessible database, we’ve been able to identify top talent quickly and make strong hires." A recent search for a Director of Major Gifts perfectly illustrates Talent Finder’s power. Connect built a pool of candidates, and one person, Annie Kennedy, immediately stood out. She wasn't actively looking for a new role, serving as the Assistant Director of Development for Major Gifts at Wisconsin, but her profile and experience were a perfect match for Illinois' needs. Because Connect's platform provided key details like salary expectations upfront, the Illinois team knew she was a viable candidate, and after a 30-minute Zoom call, UI convinced Annie to apply. She "crushed the interview" and was brought to campus. The entire process, from initial outreach in early June to an on-campus visit and accepting an offer by the second week of July, took just five weeks—an incredibly efficient timeline for a high-level fundraising hire. Illini Asst. AD for NIL Engagement Derek Stark sums up his Connect experience like this: “Connect is like LinkedIn on steroids. It's given us the best candidate pool for any role we’ve had here. We were blown away by our finalists. … They were all rock stars." (link)

Deal Corner…
➤ Penn State is set to announce a multi-year sponsorship deal with Amica Mutual Insurance that makes the company PSU’s Official Auto, Home and Life Insurance Partner. The deal includes one of Beaver Stadium’s two apron field logo assets, that debuted during last week’s Nittany Lions home game, as well as premium signage throughout the football stadium and other athletics facilities, along with two entitlements (football team arrival and signing day). Per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, terms of the Playfly Sports-brokered deal were not immediately available. (link)
➤ Nevada is the latest to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect to access its Talent Finder to identify and recruit top talent for administrative positions. (link)
➤ The Sun Belt teams up with Credit Union 1 to have the financial institution serve as the league’s official credit union. As part of the multi-year, Van Wagner-secured agreement, Credit Union 1 will serve as the title sponsor of the annual Sun Belt Football Championship Game and be integrated into year-round league events, including a presence at all Sun Belt Conference championships. Credit Union 1 will also commit resources to support conference-wide student-athlete financial wellness programs. (link)

SCOREboard…
➤ Ross Dellenger observes for On3 that while the SCORE Act is on the “doorstep of introduction on the [House] floor, trouble is brewing for its biggest and most public supporters, like the NCAA national office and four power conferences. Detractors, both from within college athletics and outside of the industry, are mounting over a bill that, even supporters acknowledge, is far from perfect. Within the industry, many administrators in the non-power conferences fear that the SCORE Act grants the SEC, Big 12, ACC and Big Ten enough power that they may, eventually, reset Division I or FBS membership requirements or adjust championship access and revenue distribution to their benefit. Though they support most of the concepts in the bill, a coalition of 10 non-FBS conferences hired a lobbying firm and is in its third month of attempting to amend the bill’s language in at least two notable areas: (1) extend the current five-year moratorium on existing Division I membership standards; and (2) grandfather in the 40 non-FBS schools that currently sanction 14 or 15 sports (the bill requires schools to sanction the FBS minimum of at least 16 sports).” (link)
➤ Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill: “We don’t see this as an adversarial piece at all. We want to protect the future of college athletics. We’ve given away our voting power and a lot of revenue, in some ways rightfully so, but we need to put a stick in the ground, so we all can have a strong future together.” Dellenger also points to the campaign being mounted by Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell to amend the Sports Broadcasting Act, but House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) appears disinterested in veering outside the NIL lane at the moment. “Congress isn’t looking to come in and break up contracts already negotiated between parties.” He adds: “A lot of fans of college sports are getting frustrated. You got a player on one team and they’ve played for four teams in five years. They can’t graduate because their credits don’t transfer. It allows for this new board to put limitations on things like the transfer portal.” (link)
➤ The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty also weighs in on the status of the SCORE Act, which he notes has “stalled before reaching a vote on the House floor, at least on the expected timeline.” Dougherty points out that when Scalise did a CNN hit to stump for the legislation, and “toward the end, the anchor noted that the White House had declined to comment on whether it supported the legislation. On that, one aide told me: ‘The majority leader is doing a three-minute segment on CNN while the White House doesn’t publicly support the bill? That’s because Cody [Campbell] is there. If Cody was not telling Trump that the bill isn’t good, you’d have to think the White House would be behind it. Or at least there’s a way higher chance they would be behind it.’” Dougherty goes on to suggest there’s a “good argument, especially now, that those who devised the SCORE Act overplayed their hand. Time will tell, of course, since the outlook could shift with some amendments, should the same group of reps keep working off the initial version. With that version, though, they reached for so much – blanket antitrust protection with no sunset clause; a pre-emption of state name, image and likeness (NIL) laws; a ban on athletes ever becoming employees; an essential enshrinement of the House settlement – that it became easy for the opponents to build a coalition. One lobbyist, working against the SCORE Act, told me: ‘It was like shooting fish in a barrel in recent weeks. Calling a flippable Republican? They are taking away states’ rights! Calling a moderate Democrat in a labor-friendly state? Have you read the employment section?! There was really something for everyone.’” (link)

Grambling State AD Trayvean Scott shares the findings from an operational review conducted by College Sports Solutions. Based on NCAA Institutional Performance Program (IPP) data and FY24 financial reports, CSS determined that Grambling Athletics generated $5.8M in total revenue, exceeding the SWAC median by nearly $1.7M; produced $3.4M in football revenue, leading the SWAC and ranking above the 75th percentile nationally; raised $1.6M in contributions, well above peer averages; and operates with a 42.7% revenue self-sufficiency rate, the highest among its peer group. The Tigers will implement a rev-share initiative beginning next month and will host information sessions on eligibility and compliance requirements; contractual commitments under the program; financial literacy and wealth management resources; and academic expectations and support structures. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is looking to provide the full allotment of scholarships to its football team in the next five years, and Golden Lions AD Chris Robinson explains: "The NCAA allows 105 scholarships for football. In our entire athletic department, we only have 128 scholarships. So, our goal is to have a full complement of scholarships to get those athletes here to be able to represent the university." In regards to revenue sharing, Robinson explains: "We're not at that point just yet, but we're finding ways to do it. We have some incentives, academic incentives, where some students are receiving some funding for their academic achievements right now, but we're continuing to try to build off of that." Robinson also says plans to build a track and field complex and upgrade the soccer field have been temporarily halted. "The quotes we got back were not what we wanted. The initial quote was $9M to build a facility was done at $4M at other places. We can't do that. So, right now, we're in talks. We've got it down to about $5.9M right now, so it's getting closer to where we want it." (link)

I got comfortable there, I built a family with a lot of people, a lot of donors and everything. So I just gave back because I felt like I want to see their program thrive.
