Southwest Minnesota State AD Travis Whipple joins Saturday Morning Mustang as he gets rolling in Marshall. On what drew him to SMSU: “The opportunity to come back home to Minnesota was great. I think of the impact we've always felt when we've come to this community, how supportive it is. I think there's a tremendous foundation in place for athletics that we can really do something incredible together, that we could go after extraordinary things as a collective, as a whole.” Asked about the similarities between Fort Lewis and Durango and SMSU: “I think where we've really focused, and I think it's going to be a real advantage for us here, is let's focus on our strengths. Let's focus on that ability. SCORE Act Status…
➤ CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello reports “the expectation is the SCORE Act will not be brought to the House floor for a vote next week. … Growing concern today that [the] votes weren't there to pass it, so legislators are returning to the drawing board on some items. A vote will likely not occur this month.” (link)
➤ Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger adds that a key meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus transpired this morning, noting that “at the meeting, the CBC did not reach an agreement to support the SCORE Act, delaying any vote that was scheduled for next week.” (link)
➤ Dellenger observes for On3 that while the SCORE Act is on the “doorstep of introduction on the [House] floor, trouble is brewing for its biggest and most public supporters, like the NCAA national office and four power conferences. Detractors, both from within college athletics and outside of the industry, are mounting over a bill that, even supporters acknowledge, is far from perfect. Within the industry, many administrators in the non-power conferences fear that the SCORE Act grants the SEC, Big 12, ACC and Big Ten enough power that they may, eventually, reset Division I or FBS membership requirements or adjust championship access and revenue distribution to their benefit. Though they support most of the concepts in the bill, a coalition of 10 non-FBS conferences hired a lobbying firm and is in its third month of attempting to amend the bill’s language in at least two notable areas: (1) extend the current five-year moratorium on existing Division I membership standards; and (2) grandfather in the 40 non-FBS schools that currently sanction 14 or 15 sports (the bill requires schools to sanction the FBS minimum of at least 16 sports).” (link)

Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Virginia State were among several HBCUs who shuttered their campuses on Thursday due to terroristic threats. Per HBCU Gameday, VSU announced early in the day that campus would close immediately, stressing the move was necessary to protect the community’s well-being. (link, link)

Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech have announced a new annual rivalry, the Kármán Clash, named after renowned aerospace scientist Professor Theodore von Kármán. The Eagles and Panthers will square off in 11 sports, plus department GPA and community service. ERAU AD Rachel Burleson: “This rivalry is more than a series of competitions; it's a celebration of two institutions bound by a shared legacy in aviation, aerospace, and innovation. Just as Professor von Kármán challenged the world to redefine its limits, our student-athletes will compete with that same spirit of pushing boundaries and striving for excellence. The Kármán Clash will not only fuel competitive essence, but it will also bring our campuses, alumni, and communities together in a way that inspires pride and connection.” (link)

In August 2025, the number of DII jobs posted on CollegeSports.jobs increased by a dizzying 46% over the previous August. Meanwhile, the number of DII jobs posted on all other job boards plummeted by 78% during the same time period. Paramount Skydance is prepping a majority cash bid for Warner Bros. Discovery that’s reportedly backed by the Ellison family, according to The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel, who adds that the bid will include the entire company, including its cable networks and movie studio. Per the author: “By preparing a play for the company before Warner’s planned split, Paramount Skydance is attempting to pre-empt a potential bidding war for the studio and streaming unit that could include deep-pocketed technology companies such as Amazon.com and Apple. If successful, such a deal would bring together two of Hollywood’s most storied studios and the parent companies of streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+. Warner is home to ‘Barbie,’ DC Comics, Harry Potter and TV shows such as ‘The White Lotus,’ as well as cable networks CNN, TBS and TNT. The scale of the potential combination could bring antitrust and regulatory scrutiny.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Education plans to end discretionary grant programs for a slew of minority-serving institutions, asserting that the programs amount to “discrimination” and are “unconstitutional” because they require colleges to enroll a certain percentage of students from a particular racial or ethnic background to qualify. Education Secretary Linda McMahon: “Discrimination based upon race or ethnicity has no place in the United States. To further our commitment to ending discrimination in all forms across federally supported programs, the Department will no longer award Minority-Serving Institution grants that discriminate by restricting eligibility to institutions that meet government-mandated racial quotas.” Seven grant programs are on the chopping block, including funds for Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian–serving institutions, predominantly Black institutions, Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander–serving institutions and Native American–serving nontribal institutions. Historically Black colleges and universities and tribal colleges are unaffected. (link)
