I think there are going to be people that have collectives, that are creative enough and have the financial means enough to have donors that want to do that. I hope, and there's been some discussion at the divisional level and there's nothing formally on the table yet, to have some legislation that prohibits collectives or at our level wouldn't involve that. If you ask the common athletic director, I think in our world they don't want to deal with that. More from New England College AD Dave DeCew’s Small College Conversation, as he notes the two most important things to launch football were hiring a great coach and staff and the infrastructure. NEC is in the process of fundraising for a new multi-use turf surface that will serve as the home football field but also support all sports. Asked about the role of athletics at small colleges: “I think for us, and I think for a lot of schools, you have to make decisions based on what's working at your school. […] We feel really comfortable that overall our menu of opportunities is building us forward, and that's something that we've continued to expand on. So for us, I don't see that changing, but I think everyone's taking a hard look at the expenses and where they are and how this is going to impact their institution based on the role athletics plays. And for us, athletics is a huge driver for our school, and it's something that I see continuing. […] There are so many things that make students want to be a part of your school. I think the big piece for me as the athletic director is if we can continue to make it so that the athletic experience is not only positive for student-athletes, but it's something that our entire community wants to be around and can make their experience better, then I think I'm holding up my end of the bargain, and certainly the folks around here are hoping to try and make sure we push that forward.” Full conversation on BOSCA. The Hechinger Report’s Miles MacClure chats with Roanoke leadership about the impact of adding Football as the college’s enrollment fell by around 300 from 2019 to 2022. With enrollment this fall at 1,738, President Frank Shushok Jr. on the enrollment impact: “Do I think adding sports strategically is helping the college maintain its enrollment base? It absolutely has for us, and it has in a time when men in particular aren’t going to college.” AD Curtis Campbell adds: “The goal was that football would, in a couple of years, bring in at least an additional hundred students to the college. We’ve got 97 kids out there on the field. So we’re already at the goal.” The Maroons have leaned heavily on in-state recruiting, with 75 of 91 Football student-athletes coming from Virginia and the community has bought in on the program’s revival. As for the long-term impact on enrollment, MacClure gets this from Georgia (DI) Assoc. Professor Welch Suggs, who published a study last year on the impact of adding football: “What you see is basically a one-year spike in male enrollment around guys who come to that school to help be part of starting up a team, but then that effect fades out over the next couple of years.” For now, after not playing a game since 1942, over 9K fans showed up to the first game last season as a club team. The Maroons had over 5,600 in attendance for their first home varsity game at Salem Stadium, which holds over 7K and is costing RC under $3K in rent per game. (link)

Higher Ed Dive’s Naaz Modan reports the U.S. Energy Department has cancelled plans to issue a rule, meant to level the playing field between women and men in athletics, that would have removed a regulatory requirement for colleges and schools receiving funding from the agency by no longer requiring them to provide women or girls a chance to try out for contactless men’s or boys’ sports teams in cases where no equivalent sports team exists for them. Back in May, the Trump administration “quietly proposed rescinding this requirement, along with a handful of other regulatory changes, by issuing a ‘direct final rule.’ That process is usually reserved for uncontroversial regulations that are not expected to receive pushback, allowing an agency to issue new policies without incorporating changes based on public feedback. On Sept. 10, however, the Energy Department said it was withdrawing the proposed change entirely after it received over 21,000 comments — many of them opposing the changes. … A handful of other changes remain — albeit delayed — on the Energy Department’s docket that would impact colleges and schools receiving the agency’s grants.” Per Modan, the Energy Department “said in its notice of the proposal’s withdrawal that it is allowed to propose a rule in the future ‘that may be substantially identical or similar to those previously proposed.’” (link)

Per NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report data, the number of student-athletes participating in NCAA championship sports in 2024-25 climbed to an all-time high of 554,298, marking an increase of 15,268 YoY from 2023-24. Division III saw a 2.9% increase in total championship participants. The number of DIII sports sponsored fell for the fourth consecutive year to 8,157, down from its pre-pandemic peak of 8,290. Additionally, for the first time since 1982, Division I participant counts in NCAA sports climbed over 200K (202,353 for championship sports; 204,255 when combining with emerging sports) and Division II championship sport participants totaled 141,067. Sponsorship and participation in emerging sports increased by more than 20% in 2024-25 as 6,992 athletes participated across three divisions. Schools across all three divisions sponsored 19,928 teams in NCAA championship sports, marking an all-time high and 62 more than 2023-24. More. (link, link - Full data dashboard)

Saturday’s Football matchup between Case Western Reserve and Wabash saw multiple weather delays over nearly six hours that resulted in a change of venue to make the game happen. After kickoff was delayed due to lightning the Little Giants and Spartans battled through the first half to a 21-21 tie. 75 seconds into the second half, another lightning delay struck, leading both sides to question what was next. With the projected weather patterns, the two sides decided to take the game two miles south to Crawfordsville High School, with players, coaches and fans loading up on team buses to make the unique trip. Wabash ended up with the 38-28 win a quarter-century to the day after the Little Giants used the same approach to finish a game against Wittenberg. (link)

Paramount Skydance is prepping a majority cash bid for Warner Bros. Discovery that’s reportedly backed by the Ellison family, according to The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel, who adds that the bid will include the entire company, including its cable networks and movie studio. Per the author: “By preparing a play for the company before Warner’s planned split, Paramount Skydance is attempting to pre-empt a potential bidding war for the studio and streaming unit that could include deep-pocketed technology companies such as Amazon.com and Apple. If successful, such a deal would bring together two of Hollywood’s most storied studios and the parent companies of streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+. Warner is home to ‘Barbie,’ DC Comics, Harry Potter and TV shows such as ‘The White Lotus,’ as well as cable networks CNN, TBS and TNT. The scale of the potential combination could bring antitrust and regulatory scrutiny.” (link)

After news that the U.S. Department of Education would end discretionary grant programs for a slew of minority-serving institutions, the DOE has canceled $350M in grants set to be distributed for programs that will now be redirected to areas that “advance Administration priorities.” (link)
