TCU AD Mike Buddie is leaving the door open to continue the Battle for the Iron Skillet football matchup with SMU, which is set for this coming Saturday in Fort Worth, adding: “Number one, our schedule is pretty much booked through 2032, but I would like to talk to [Mustangs AD] Damon Evans about it for sure. I would like to go through a full cycle, or season, to know where we are before making any of those decisions. I know having talked to our fan base that it didn’t have an appetite to play a Group of 5 team when we were a Power 4.” Now that SMU is in the ACC, that point is now moot, and Buddie says: “There is a great argument to be made to continue the series, and there’s an argument not to continue the series. … For me so far – and I want to stress that it is a small sample size – but I have yet to hear from one of our fans who had a good experience when they attended a game at SMU. Again, it’s a small sample size. That is a factor you have to consider because you want your fans to feel safe and to have a good experience for any game they attend. Another one is [Horned Frogs HC] Sonny [Dykes] coached there. That is the main one for me because he does have a tricky past when it comes to that.” There’s also another factor to consider, according to Buddie. “If we do schedule that game, in 2032, are Clemson, North Carolina and Florida State still in the ACC? I don’t think anyone would assume that.” (link)

Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen and New Hampshire AD Allison Rich sat down with College.town's Kristen Eargle from the 2025 NACDA Convention. Christensen discusses his first year at the helm, and Rich discusses starting her fourth year and benchmarks for success. The two also share what skill sets best prepared them for their roles and offer advice on winning the AD interview. Christensen advises being who you are in the interview, and it’s “going to come down to if you can mesh well with the president. And thankfully my president is a fantastic human. He values athletics. He was a student-athlete. His son’s currently a student-athlete, so he gets our world, but he also needs to wear the president hat. So, for me, when it came down to the decision I felt like after the interview I was like I can work for this guy. … But at the end of the day for me it’s all about if it doesn’t work out that first time or second time or third time, it’s because of the fit with you and the president. And you need that to be real.” Rich adds that it’s important to know what you’re looking for. Even within DI and conferences, AD jobs are different. “So, it’s not just meshing with the president, it’s being the right person for that role at the right time. I looked at a lot of opportunities before I was successful in this one. And some probably would not have been a great fit for me. … I think you have a lot more staying power and a lot more success if you’re at a place where you’re really going to be able to function well and do the things you do and be yourself and be able to be successful that way.” Check out the full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. Wisconsin is entering its 10th year as an Under Armour school, and Badgers Deputy AD AD/CRO Mitchell Pinta tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe that “they’ve been a tremendous partner of ours for almost a decade now — for our student-athletes and our brand — and we see real potential for this partnership to grow even stronger in the years ahead.” Terms of the contract stipulate that UW could not negotiate with any other athletic apparel providers through June 30, 2025, so while Badgers are now allowed to negotiate with other brands, Under Armour retains the right of first refusal. Pinta declined to indicate whether the department has engaged in any conversations with other apparel brands, noting only that UW is “exactly where we thought we would be and want to be at this point” in the process. In what the department is looking for in a partner, Pinta says: “I can’t speak to other schools’ contracts, but I think for us, as we look at the ever-changing landscape in college athletics, yes, NIL is 100% an important component. And as we look at what the future in this space looks like for us, it’s definitely something that we’re having conversations about.” (link)

New College Football Playoff Senior Advisor of Football Justin Fuente talks to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Tell about his new role: “My first job is to get in there and learn and meet and develop relationships. … I think the role will grow with time. They want a coach-player perspective and voice in the CFP planning process. There are probably going to be times when head coaches and football (administrators) are going to want that point of contact.” Is coaching again still on Fuente’s professional roadmap? “I’m not going to move. I’m happy for us to plant roots here (Dallas) and have a home we know we’re going to stay in for some time. … (Not coaching) is a lot more to do with the lifestyle than NIL or the transfer portal. While NIL and transfer portal is a small part of it, I haven’t given up hope that eventually we’ll get our arms wrapped around all of that and they’ll make it a little more manageable. But for me, it’s more about finding some work-life balance and being involved in my kids’ lives and us staying right here and in this school district.” (link)

On3’s Andy Staples lauds the ACC replay review policies: “The ACC had been allowing viewers to watch and listen to replay reviews in select games this season, but this was the first time we got to watch a crunch-time review of a critical play in a game involving potential conference title contenders. It was enlightening. It was educational. Most important: It was transparent. And now that we’ve gotten a taste, we should demand this level of transparency in every game from every league. The ACC isn’t afraid to shine a light on the process. And now that the ACC has shown how it’s done, the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC need to quit being scared and let us see and hear the replay reviews in their leagues as well. … You’ve seen how it needs to be done. The ACC showed you. Now get to work.” (link)

Speaking to the Daily News Record’s Shane Mettlen on the challenges on scheduling, James Madison Men’s Basketball HC Preston Spradlin remarks: “The fans that are looking at our schedule going where are all the ACC, where are all the SEC, where are the Power Four schools? They will not play because of where the NET rankings are. Their leagues are presumably telling them to play low-majors that they feel like they can really beat handedly to increase their efficiencies, or play other high-majors.” Noting JMU’s only 2025-26 game against a high-major opponent is at Arkansas, Spradlin adds: “We’re just somewhere in between, and that’s a difficult spot to be in for a program like James Madison. Because we don’t want to be just another mid-major. We want to be at the upper echelon of mid-majors like the teams that are on our schedule. So that’s kind of where we’re at in the state of college basketball, but thankfully we were able to work it out with [Razorbacks HC John Calipari]. … He’s giving us an opportunity. [ …] We have a really tough schedule, but the days of looking at a schedule and saying where are all the Power Four schools, they won’t play. We can call, we can email, we can do whatever we want. They will not play. It’s not my fault, it’s college basketball.” More. (link)

What’s next for the college sports video game industry? Extra Points’ Matt Brown writes the answer might just be volleyball. Highlighting Killer Aces, an indie competitive volleyball title produced by studio 26K, Brown notes the way the game is currently structured doesn’t include collegiate intellectual property, but rather focuses on the experience of building a high-level international club team. 26K developer Ryan Kamins tells Brown that “the idea of working with college IP is very interesting” and that he’d love to find a way to marry college program roster building mechanics with the arcade gameplay he’s developing. Brown adds: “As the popularity of volleyball … has exploded over the last few years, and with industry heavyweights EA and 2K unlikely to take on a completely new game project in the near future, perhaps colleges could be persuaded to use different licensing vehicles to get their IP into independent video games. That might mean schools (and/or players) potentially being willing to accept a higher royalty rate, instead of a larger up-front payment, or schools being willing to take on some marketing efforts to help keep development costs down. Big budget sports game development is very expensive and complicated, so much so that the number of studios who can realistically take on such a project can be counted on one hand. But if schools are willing to roll the dice on indie projects, and if consumers are willing to make those risks worth it, then schools could potentially enjoy significant recruiting and revenue advantages.” (link)

European private equity firm CVC Capital Partners has unveiled new division Global Sport Group (GSG) to hold its $13.6B of sports properties and pursue expanded opportunities in the sports world, per Sportico’s Brendan Coffey, who notes that the “formation of GSG provides a structure for sharing expertise among CVC’s seven leagues, unlocking commercial opportunities across the leagues and providing a platform to scale value creation in the sports, media and entertainment areas, according to the people.” The move also “makes [GSG] the largest sports fund in private equity and signals CVC’s intention to expand its sports holdings with a long-term focus on capitalizing on global leagues and teams as new media models, mobile-first consumption and the explosion of women’s sports have put the industry at an inflection point.” Former EE CEO Marc Allera is heading up GSG as Chair with Coffey observing that the group “is likely to seek geographic and sports expansion in its portfolio, with North America probably an obvious place to seek more opportunities. CVC is part of a consortium of funds permitted to purchase minority stakes in NFL franchises.” More. (link)

The NCAA Administrative Committee will meet next Wednesday with the expectation of approving a single football transfer window in January. Specifically, the window would run from January 2nd through the 11th. (link)

Yahoo Sports/On3’s Ross Dellenger: “A notable change to NCAA men’s bball committee selection process: the chair must be recused if their school is under review for final at-large selections. If their school is among the last 4 at-large teams, the chair cannot publicly comment on its inclusion.” Dellenger notes the change comes after West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey called on the NCAA to examine its policy when the Mountaineers were left out of the field, but North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham was chair of the committee and the Tar Heels were one of the last at-large teams. A statement from the NCAA: “The Division I Men’s Basketball Committee reviews its principles and procedures annually after each year’s championship as part of its comprehensive review of the championship. The current draft was approved by the committee this summer and will be in place for the 2026 championship.” (link)

“The biggest brands in college football are interested in this. They text me, they ask me about it, 'What years are open?’” That’s Aer Lingus College Football Classic co-founder & On Location EVP John Anthony on the marquee Week 0 matchups in Dublin that will now stretch through at least 2037 according to multiple reports yesterday. While not fully inked yet, deal negotiations are in “an advanced stage with public and private stakeholders” & are “expected in due course.” Anthony also comments on other international games, like Michigan’s reported kick with Western Michigan next season in Germany: “We know there's competition coming. They're all looking at what's going on in Dublin and saying they want in on some of that. I look at it as a rising tide.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert pens a letter to fans asking them to complete a survey regarding next year’s season tickets. At the root of the matter is potentially playing the 2026 matchup against Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium instead of at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. Not unlike this year’s tilt against Georgia at MBS, Alpert notes that facing the Vols at MBS would “provide us with a significant revenue lift.” The options for consideration: The Seven-Game All-In Price – All seven home games played at Bobby Dodd, including the non-conference games against Tennessee and Colorado; The Six-Game All-In Price – Six home games played at Bobby Dodd (including Colorado and all four ACC games) with the home game against Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium NOT included. Examples of pricing differences are included, as is the question of whether you’re a current season ticket holder or plan to be and if the chosen season ticket plan impacts that decision. More. More on the scheduling front as Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard talks about why the Cyclones are playing at Arkansas State today, a move that the Quad-City Times’ Ben Hutchens reports will save ISU $4M: “You’d like to play as many games at home as possible, but the problem is you have nine conference games, so you’re going to have three nonconference games. One of them is going to be an FCS game that you buy. And, the other game is going to be Iowa, so that leaves one spot left. [...] There’s schools that buy it because they’ve got money, but those are the same schools paying $5 million for their quarterback. So, that’s the reason.” (link)

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed two bills regarding student-athlete NIL rights, according to WVNews’ John Mark Shaver, who adds that “House Bills 2595 and 2576, both of which were passed by the West Virginia Legislature during this year’s regular session and went into effect in April, will support student-athletes by allowing them to be compensated for their efforts through sponsorships, brand deals and other promotional activities. HB 2595 authorizes higher education institutions in the state to establish nonprofits to manage revenue sharing and student-athletes’ NIL opportunities. [...] Additionally, HB 2576, or the NIL Protection Act, not only allows student-athletes to be compensated with NIL monies, but also bans athletic associations, conferences and other governing bodies from ‘penalizing athletics with NIL-related activities.’” West Virginia AD Wren Baker: “These two bills were really important to us for a variety of reasons. They allow us to run a modern commercial enterprise, which collegiate athletics is becoming. If we want to compete in this new world, we have to be able to do that. It also allows our student athletes to maximize their name, image and likeness opportunities, have the protection of the state and, for us as an institution, help them identify and manage those. It was a critical thing for us to do.” (link)

Washington State will begin selling beer and wine at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium this football season, following state Cannabis and Liquor Board approval, according to The Spokesman-Review’s Mitchell Roland. As part of a pilot policy, “beer and wine sales will be allowed throughout the stadium, though alcohol will be prohibited in the student section. Concession stands will not sell more than two beverages per customer during each transaction, and will check IDs to ensure fans are old enough to purchase alcohol.” Board Chair Jim Vollendroff: “We’ve seen from other collegiate facilities in our state, and across the country, that when done responsibly, alcohol service can be managed in a way that enhances the fan experience without compromising health and safety. … Conducting a pilot gives us a structure period to evaluate: Are the safeguards effective? Are incidents increasing? And are things being managed well? And this feedback will guide further decisions about whether we should continue, expand, revise or make permanent this pilot.” (link)

Earlier in the week, On3’s Chris Low explains why some of the “best stories in college football have nothing to do with what happens on the field,” pointing out that “I’ve covered national championship games, the Rose Bowl, Nick Saban, Peyton Manning and Cam Newton. But nothing rises to the level of being able to share Landrey Eargle’s story. Today, by the grace of God, Landrey is officially a teenager. She turns 13! And to get there, she’s fought every single day of her life with every ounce of love, care and support from her family. Her dad, Joshua Eargle, is UTEP’s offensive run game coordinator and tight ends coach. Her mom, Kristen, founded and hosts a national podcast, Coach’s Wife Life, and works for D1.ticker.” Low continues: “When I first met Landrey, she was a week away from turning 6 and already a miracle. Joshua had emptied his retirement in chunks, rolled it over from different jobs, taken the penalty and used as much of it as possible to pay for Landrey’s medical care. She wasn’t even supposed to make it out of the hospital alive after being born six weeks premature via Caesarean section and then undergoing open heart surgery at 7 weeks old. She spent the first 73 days of her life in a hospital – six weeks at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, the first 10 days on a ventilator, before being transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where she had the open-heart surgery. She coded four times in nine days post-operation as doctors frantically brought her back to life. … Fast forward to today, and while her immune system remains significantly compromised, her seizures are still frequent, and she’s had to weather some harrowing hospitalizations. Landrey now claps when she gets excited, delights in listening to her praise music, and has even competed in Special Olympics. Along the way, Joshua and Kristen have drawn strength from Landrey’s infectious smile and her indomitable strength. The family’s motto: Choose joy today. Well, today, we celebrate one of the bravest little girls — make that bravest teenagers — that I know and her incredible family.” (link)
