Cornell College President Jonathan Brand joins the Hilltop Sports Report to discuss a handful of topics. On the $20.5M renovation of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center, Brand: “Before this project, this was an enormous negative. […] Not only was it falling apart, but it smelled old. It was hard to imagine how we were going to recruit and retain students and student-athletes with the building that we had. It took years and years for us to get to this project. I mean, we had a few other projects that were first in the queue. The Thomas Commons had to be renovated. We renovated four residence halls and added air conditioning. The Russell Science Center did not exist even before the SAW. So finally, when this project got to the front of the queue, our alumni and friends who know the importance of high-quality facilities, including in athletics, were the ones who came forward and said, ‘We need to make this a financial reality.’ It's thanks to our alumni and friends that we were able to fully fund this project and get it going. And given what I know, what we all know about the decline in the number of high school student graduates now, which means that there'll be a decline in the number of students going to college. Had this building not been done by this time, it would have put us even further back in terms of reaching our recruitment and retention goals.” Asked about how Brand approaches the higher education landscape: “This is an opportunity for Cornell to ask ourselves, and every strong institution like Cornell should be doing this during highs and lows, we should be asking ourselves what are students today looking for in a college experience and what can we do on the block system that no other school can do that meets what students are telling us they are looking for in a college experience and do that and be that with all of our might and all of our energy and all of our focus and all of our passion and all of our devotion? “I never doubted that we could succeed, it was just a question of how many obstacles we had to get through in order to … get through it all and make it work.” That’s Keystone President John Pullo on the challenges the college has overcome in the last year. Keystone’s operating expenses are down over 20% and debt has been reduced by 65% over the last two years, as KC’s merger with WEIR will help keep operating costs down moving forward. VP of Enrollment, Institutional Advancement and Marketing Tim Pryle: “In this whole process, it’s really what we have kept in the forefront … the students that have historically come to Keystone. We want to continue to be available for those students going forward.” Of note on athletics, the Giants have been in discussion with the Landmark about rejoining as auxiliary members for Football. Sportico’s Michael McCann shares some takeaways from yesterday’s U.S. Sixth Circuit Court hearing in Pavia v. NCAA, including this observation: “The judges (Amul Thapar, Chad Readler and Whitney Hermandorfer) demanded that [NCAA attorney Rakesh Kilaru and Pavia attorney Ryan Downton] address whether Pavia v. NCAA is already over since Pavia is playing this fall and the NCAA has promised to not withdraw the waiver even if it wins the appeal. The judges worried that the case is now ‘academic,’ since Pavia has already obtained what he sought and can’t lose it at this point. U.S. courts don’t provide advisory opinions and instead limit their rulings to actual cases and controversies. … If the judges decide that the NCAA’s appeal is moot, they will deny the appeal but not rule on the substance of the case, a decision that would disappoint both sides.” Kilaru argued, among other things, that setting parameters on participation in sports is not without precedent, citing age limits in Little League and gender constraints on the LPGA Tour. “The judges jumped in to suggest Kilaru’s analogies weren’t so convincing in the context of a football player like Pavia, who has a limited window to earn NIL money. ‘We’d never say you can only be an actor for five years,’ one of the judges quipped, also noting that ‘you can’t debate that NIL opportunities can be lucrative for some QBs.’” Meanwhile, the “bench asked Downton to explain if college athletes could sue over GPA minimum requirements as antitrust problems since those requirements prevent some athletes from earning NIL money. Downton was thus tested on whether GPA could be viewed as a barrier to entry since, like NIL, it is ostensibly unrelated to playing a sport but has an impact on earning capacity from playing that sport. Downton said GPA could be subject to antitrust analysis but suggested it’s a reasonable restraint on trade. A GPA rule is related to academic progress and other NCAA educational goals.” More from McCann. (link)

The NCAA and RQ+ are collaborating on the Next Generation Officiating Initiative, expanding upon the Association’s efforts to increase interest and education within the world of men's basketball officiating. Running from October-March, the free six-month virtual course for up-and-coming basketball officials will deliver targeted professional development content on topics related to the art and science of officiating with all non-Division I officials, specifically Division II, Division III, junior college, NAIA and high school officials, eligible to register. Content during the virtual portion will include training videos and interactive modules that discuss topics such as effectively working with your crew, best practices when making calls on the floor and how to interact with coaches. There will also be opportunities to have conversations with other officials about current trends throughout the season. Following the conclusion of the virtual courses in March, 100 participants will be selected to attend the in-person Next Generation of Officiating program in Indianapolis, the site of the 2026 NCAA Division I, II and III Men's Basketball Championships. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered interest rates by 25 basis points to a range between 4% and 4.25%. The decision marks the first rate cut in nine months. Officials also removed a key phrase that had been used this year to tamp down expectations of rate cuts, further underscoring how reductions at upcoming and consecutive policy meetings have become more likely.
