Lewis AD John Ashaolu sits down with College.town’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NACDA Convention to discuss his vision for the department and look back at his first year leading the Flyers, which he categorized as adventurous. As Ashaolu worked to create alignment with university leadership, he credits President David Livingston and Provost Christopher Sindt with being two of the most competitive people on campus, which makes his job easier. “When my president and my provost are attending athletic competitions and I'm bringing things to them and say, ‘Hey, we need to improve on this,’ and they're finishing my sentence saying, ‘We need to improve this facility, or we need to renovate this,’ before I even finish my sentence. That just makes my job a little bit easier. […] They see it. They're present at our athletic competitions. They have conversations with our coaches. They're super invested. They know that Lewis is right now fifth in the Learfield Director’s Cup. How can we stay there? How can we stay a top 10 Learfield Director’s Cup program?” To help reach President Livingston’s goal of improving from having one Sweet 16 or Elite Eight team to at least one or two in the Final Four each year, Ashaolu borrowed a mantra from Kent State (DI) AD Randale Richmond that “a really good athletic department is coach-led, student-athlete-centered and administrator-supported.” Lewis is working to add more staff in communications, facilities and more and upgrade facilities to support the growth of the Flyers’ portfolio. Sportico’s Michael McCann shares some takeaways from yesterday’s U.S. Sixth Circuit Court hearing in Pavia v. NCAA, including this observation: “The judges (Amul Thapar, Chad Readler and Whitney Hermandorfer) demanded that [NCAA attorney Rakesh Kilaru and Pavia attorney Ryan Downton] address whether Pavia v. NCAA is already over since Pavia is playing this fall and the NCAA has promised to not withdraw the waiver even if it wins the appeal. The judges worried that the case is now ‘academic,’ since Pavia has already obtained what he sought and can’t lose it at this point. U.S. courts don’t provide advisory opinions and instead limit their rulings to actual cases and controversies. … If the judges decide that the NCAA’s appeal is moot, they will deny the appeal but not rule on the substance of the case, a decision that would disappoint both sides.” Kilaru argued, among other things, that setting parameters on participation in sports is not without precedent, citing age limits in Little League and gender constraints on the LPGA Tour. “The judges jumped in to suggest Kilaru’s analogies weren’t so convincing in the context of a football player like Pavia, who has a limited window to earn NIL money. ‘We’d never say you can only be an actor for five years,’ one of the judges quipped, also noting that ‘you can’t debate that NIL opportunities can be lucrative for some QBs.’” Meanwhile, the “bench asked Downton to explain if college athletes could sue over GPA minimum requirements as antitrust problems since those requirements prevent some athletes from earning NIL money. Downton was thus tested on whether GPA could be viewed as a barrier to entry since, like NIL, it is ostensibly unrelated to playing a sport but has an impact on earning capacity from playing that sport. Downton said GPA could be subject to antitrust analysis but suggested it’s a reasonable restraint on trade. A GPA rule is related to academic progress and other NCAA educational goals.” More from McCann. (link)

Texas Permian Basin hit its $1M FY25 fundraising goal for the UTPB Champions Fund and now has its sights set on a $1.25M goal for FY26. AD Scott Larson: “The support from our donors and the community has been incredible. Reaching the $1 million goal shows the pride and commitment people have for UTPB Athletics. These funds make a tremendous difference for UTPB athletics, starting with attracting quality student-athletes and then helping them excel academically, compete at a high level and help them grow as leaders in the Permian Basin and beyond.” (link)

The NCAA and RQ+ are collaborating on the Next Generation Officiating Initiative, expanding upon the Association’s efforts to increase interest and education within the world of men's basketball officiating. Running from October-March, the free six-month virtual course for up-and-coming basketball officials will deliver targeted professional development content on topics related to the art and science of officiating with all non-Division I officials, specifically Division II, Division III, junior college, NAIA and high school officials, eligible to register. Content during the virtual portion will include training videos and interactive modules that discuss topics such as effectively working with your crew, best practices when making calls on the floor and how to interact with coaches. There will also be opportunities to have conversations with other officials about current trends throughout the season. Following the conclusion of the virtual courses in March, 100 participants will be selected to attend the in-person Next Generation of Officiating program in Indianapolis, the site of the 2026 NCAA Division I, II and III Men's Basketball Championships. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered interest rates by 25 basis points to a range between 4% and 4.25%. The decision marks the first rate cut in nine months. Officials also removed a key phrase that had been used this year to tamp down expectations of rate cuts, further underscoring how reductions at upcoming and consecutive policy meetings have become more likely.
