Legends Global acquires Nations Group, which will be folded into Legends’ owners’ representation vertical with Nations Founder Chris Nations remaining with Legends Global as President, Owners’ Representation. Legends EVP/CRO Chad Estis: “One of the things when we view the world through our lens, we're looking at the synergies between the multiple services we offer, so bolstering this, adding Chris' leadership, more capabilities in the college space, fits in across the whole company. This was strategic and now it's up to Chris and I to go win our fair share of deals out there. (CAA) Icon is a good competitor but there is room for us. And this makes us stronger.” (link)

Speaking at the CNBC Sport and Boardroom’s Game Plan Conference on Tuesday, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark addressed how their leagues are adjusting to revenue sharing, with each emphasizing the need to generate more revenue. Phillips noted that “revenues have never been greater. Expenses for our schools also continue to go up. Is it sustainable, is really the question. … In the league office, we continue to try to find new revenue streams that are available to us that will help offset some of those expenses [of paying student-athletes].” Ackerman echoed that uncertainty, highlighting the struggles over allocating dollars between the sports and between men’s and women’s programs: “Football is driving the revenue story. Men’s basketball is second … So the question is, should half of that revenue be shared, no matter what, no matter who’s generating it? I believe, frankly, it’s going to end up in the courts unless Congress gets involved.” Yormark, meanwhile, dismissed the notion that college sports are in a “financial crisis,” saying warnings were “overly provocative.” On the potential of outside investment, Phillips and Ackerman say their conferences are each fielding proposals from Wall Street. Yormark notes: “We’re not going to sell a stake in this conference. But do we partner with someone strategically that provides different types of resources, capital, strategic resources? That potentially could happen.” (link)

The AP’s Aaron Beard reports the ACC’s new revenue distribution model will distribute 60% of TV revenues based on a “rolling five-year viewership formula, with the remaining 40% dispersed equally among schools. Football represents 75% of that viewership payout and men’s basketball 25% as the top revenue-driving sports. Additionally, a person with knowledge of the plan told The Associated Press that the current year carries 35% of the value in the five-year formula; the previous four years combine at lower weights for the remaining 65%.” As for how that changes the strategy for athletic departments, Clemson AD Graham Neff notes: “It incentivizes investment in those sports just for competitive success, but it provides great value back to our media partner in ESPN. If now all decision-makers like ADs and coaches are more frontal lobe about scheduling and prominent matchups and TV slots and days, in theory that’s more strategy and providing more value as a league to ESPN.” Duke Football HC Manny Diaz also weighs in: “I think everyone understands now that we don’t say this is a business under our breath anymore. We recognize this is a legit business. So to me, whatever’s good for the business of Duke football or Duke athletics or college football in general, everybody’s got to be on board to do those things.” (link)

More from Oregon State AD Scott Barnes, who tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher that “ultimately what we need to do is continue to build this conference into what we believe it can be, and that’s part of the Power 5, not Power 4. Ultimately, in the meantime, continue to invest in the priority areas. We’ve got to rearrange the deck chairs a bit. We’ve got to put more of our resources into rev share for student-athlete benefits as we call them, and less into maybe some other areas that we would’ve invested in prior – things like perhaps major facilities projects or even endowments that aren’t linked to planned giving that are current use. So that current-use dollar is really key to us, and we’ve got to play some moneyball. … And then we’re never going to lose our way in terms of we are a development program and we will continue to do that. And the key there is if you’re developing, can you retain those student-athletes? And you’ll lose some, but you also keep some, and so between key investments in the transfer portal and retaining some of those student-athletes that we’ve developed, we will continue to climb the ladder.” (link)

College Sports Communicators Executive Director Jason Yaman visited with Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer to discuss Yaman's role, his approach and vision for CSC and serving an industry that incorporates all levels of athletics. On communicating with members, ADs and others about the importance of what communicators do, Yaman remarked: “I think at the higher level, kind of to your point about the ADs, the commissioners, [it’s about] the value of the work … the value of this convention, right? Regardless of what’s going on in college athletics, we need to be here as a collective talking about it. The shifts … When I got started, everybody had to figure out how to run a website. Then it was how do we get our radio broadcast to go through the website. Then it was video, and then 15 years ago, it was social media and graphics. Now it’s AI. It’s a long way of saying, from my perspective, having been at it for almost 25 years, there’s always going to be a change somewhere down the line. I can’t tell you when. I can’t tell you what it’s going to be, but I can tell you that, every three to five years, I’ve seen something change. Now, for us with CSC, a lot of it’s AI generated. A lot of our partners and vendors are people that are now specialized in that. I’m a believer that it’s coming, if it’s not here already. Let’s get our arms around it. Let's be the experts in it. Let's kind of carve that out as our territory in this industry.” More from Yaman. (link)

SMU had been “quietly conducting a rebrand until Board of Trustees Chair David Miller made a bold statement to an arena full of SMU fans Friday night,” according to the Dallas Morning News’ Lia Assimakopoulos, who adds: “For months, SMU had been phasing out the ‘Pony Up’ slogan on its social media platforms. The SMU athletics flagship X account hasn’t used #PonyUp in a post since May. New athletic director Damon Evans used the hashtag frequently in his first few weeks on the job but hasn’t since April 13.” At a private screening of the ESPN documentary Thunder On: Resurgence of the SMU Mustangs, Miller noted that Pony Up “has died a natural death.” The news, Assimakopoulos notes, “led to an outpouring of frustration from fans on social media,” and Miller tells her: “I’m surprised by the negative reaction to it. I didn’t anticipate that. But regardless, it’s fair to say that sometimes change is hard. If I had to say it all over again, I don’t know that I would say that ‘Pony Up has died a natural death.’ There may still be opportunities for us to use that theme. But fundamentally, I’m not going to hide the ball. We’re SMU Mustangs. We’re not SMU Ponies.” Miller also says the decision was made by Football HC Rhett Lashlee, Men’s Basketball HC Andy Enfield and Evans, adding: “I’m happy to take some responsibility for it, but Rhett and Andy and Damon, frankly, the image that they want to project from a recruiting standpoint is not that of a pony. It’s of wild mustangs, charging mustangs.” (link)

Memphis AD Ed Scott talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy and explains the process of approaching FedEx about sponsoring on-field logos: “[We] started the conversation before House was approved to take the temperature of Fred and FedEx. Once House was approved, we moved pretty quickly. The hardest part honestly, was just agreeing on the size and the colors because in the end zones, it’s not FedEx primary colors, but on the apron it is. … If you look now, FedEx will be seen when we play on ABC. Anywhere the football is on the field, FedEx should be able to be seen because they’re on the aprons, the two sidelines, they’re on the apron behind the end zones, by the goalposts and then they’re in the end zones. Theoretically, anywhere that the ball is on the field, you should be able to see a FedEx logo.” Within the context of Memphis approaching the Big 12 about membership, Scott explains: “What we tried to do in our conversations with anyone at the P4 level is [discussing] how do we reduce or eliminate the risks? How do we show we add value athletically? In this day and age where everybody’s trying to increase revenue, is there a way that we can increase revenue for all of our partners? The people in your league – the members are your partners. That was it. De-risk the deal. How do we add value athletically, and then how do we potentially add some value monetarily? We felt like that was a case that had never been brought forth before, and that was pretty unique to the University of Memphis and our athletic program.” (link)
|
Oregon State AD Scott Barnes joins the Y-Option podcast with Yogi Roth and talks about the importance of embracing risk when reforming the Pac-12: “What I like about this group is we thought about innovation and adapting to today’s marketplace. … We all have a mindset – look, we can’t be risk-averse in this market. And even though that’s kind of how higher ed is built – a lot of our institutions are built that way – we’ve got to think differently. And so it’s been energizing to be with colleagues and a commissioner who all are like-minded…calculated, roll the dice in some instances, and see what we get. We’ve got a whiteboard to work from and let’s draw it up the way we want.” Barnes adds: “I couldn't be more excited about what we've built…and, you know, this is the first big giant bite of that apple. There’ll be more bites of the apple, but it’s exciting to think about what we can do with what we have. And there’s a lot of metrics to support what we have is that fifth spot [after the Power 4]. You know, it’s closer to the ACC and the Big 12 than it is any Group of 5 in terms of what we have in terms of success on the field in football and basketball, eyeballs on televisions, brand awareness, all of that. And so, how do we leverage this to even greater things?” More. (link)

Tulane AD David Harris during an appearance at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club touched on several topics, including conference realignment. Harris noted that “it was last year at this time that we were in a position that we and some other schools within the conference had been approached by the Pac-12 about potential membership. And so we went through that whole process and ultimately came to the conclusion that that wasn’t the direction that we wanted to go. But it’s one of the questions that I get most frequently…how can we get to a Power 4 conference? Are you going to get us to a Power 4 conference? How is that all going to happen? And one of the things that you learn going through that process is so much of that is determined by the strength of your football program, right? And so the better you are in football, the more opportunities you have in that space.” Harris also explains that “it used to be a time where if you were going to be pursued to change conferences that if you had a conference of 12 and you were going to be the 13th member and they were going to cut you in on the distribution. … And while that still is happening, you’re seeing it actually happen in different ways now in that conferences, especially the Power 4, are looking to see what kind of offer you can make to join their conference. In other words, for how long can you give up taking money from the conference? How can you make it attractive for us to bring you in?” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann shares some takeaways from yesterday’s U.S. Sixth Circuit Court hearing in Pavia v. NCAA, including this observation: “The judges (Amul Thapar, Chad Readler and Whitney Hermandorfer) demanded that [NCAA attorney Rakesh Kilaru and Pavia attorney Ryan Downton] address whether Pavia v. NCAA is already over since Pavia is playing this fall and the NCAA has promised to not withdraw the waiver even if it wins the appeal. The judges worried that the case is now ‘academic,’ since Pavia has already obtained what he sought and can’t lose it at this point. U.S. courts don’t provide advisory opinions and instead limit their rulings to actual cases and controversies. … If the judges decide that the NCAA’s appeal is moot, they will deny the appeal but not rule on the substance of the case, a decision that would disappoint both sides.” Kilaru argued, among other things, that setting parameters on participation in sports is not without precedent, citing age limits in Little League and gender constraints on the LPGA Tour. “The judges jumped in to suggest Kilaru’s analogies weren’t so convincing in the context of a football player like Pavia, who has a limited window to earn NIL money. ‘We’d never say you can only be an actor for five years,’ one of the judges quipped, also noting that ‘you can’t debate that NIL opportunities can be lucrative for some QBs.’” More from McCann. Florida Football AC Jabbar Juluke has been suspended for three games due to an altercation that occurred before the LSU game. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: "Jabbar Juluke's conduct during the pregame altercation reflects behavior that is unacceptable and not aligned with the standards of the Southeastern Conference. Coaches are expected to be leaders and to de-escalate tense situations, and that did not happen in this circumstance. This suspension is appropriate, and any future misconduct by Jabbar Juluke will result in more severe disciplinary action."
