Elon and Queens Charlotte will merge, with Elon expected to operate Queens once the merger is finalized by next August. Elon President Connie Book: “We are definitely stronger together. This bold decision by our universities ensures that in 100 years, the founders’ missions can continue to thrive. This is a decision that creates strength and it’s built on educational opportunity as the necessary seed for a community’s future.” More details from The Charlotte Observer’s Rebecca Noel: “The Queens Board of Trustees will continue to be an active board for the next four years, while current Queens students are enrolled. After that, 10 members of the Queens board will join Elon’s current Board of Trustees, which has 37 members, to form one 47-member board. […] Queens officially became a Division 1 school in sports this year after announcing plans to do so in 2022. Cureton also said there will continue to be athletics at both campuses. It’s not immediately clear how many similar instances of a merger there have been in the United States. But Cureton said he thinks more schools will merge in the next few years [and] that Queens will be a ‘bellwether’ for the NCAA.” (link)

In reference to news of the upcoming merger of Elon and Queens Charlotte, Extra Points’ Matt Brown notes “the plan is for both schools to still maintain different athletic departments and brands. My understanding is that we’ve had DII schools maintain different athletic departments post-mergers or consolidations. Don’t think it’s happened at the D1 level yet. If there is NCAA bylaw ambiguity over how these scenarios will be administered, I bet that gets addressed on some level by early next year. The folks at Elon/Queens don’t think they’ll be the only schools to do this, and I think they’re right.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo, Justin Williams and Chris Vannini share some behind-the-scenes details of what’s holding up the SCORE Act from a floor vote in the House and note Group of 6 commissioners met about two weeks ago “to try to get aligned on various issues.” After the meeting, a letter was drafted advocating for the SCORE Act to address amending the Sports Broadcasting Act and circulated among those conferences. Russo, et al: “The purpose was to continue the discussion, consolidate ideas among the group and then bring them to the P4 for further discussion. Multiple people involved with those conferences say the letter did not have enough support to be signed and sent to lawmakers. No big deal, right? Nope. The letter broke contain, first ending up with [SEC Commissioner Greg] Sankey, who fired off a scolding email to the G6 commissioners about not working well with others. That email somehow found its way to [U.S. Congressman Michael] Baumgartner (R-WA), who blasted it out on social media. That brought a behind-the-scenes spat into the open, helping SCORE Act opponents cultivate a perception of dissent in the ranks of the very leaders who have been pleading with Congress for help.” Neither changes to a bill nor lawmaker deliberations at this stage are unusual, and Russo, et al. note: “The fact that the SCORE Act hasn’t been brought to the floor isn’t necessarily a reason for those who support it to panic, but after so much work has gone into pushing for legislation, the pressure is on to keep the momentum going.” (link)

FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett recaps the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit hearing today between the NCAA and lawyers for Vanderbilt Football student-athlete Diego Pavia, “related to the court granting the Vanderbilt quarterback an injunction to play a sixth season of college football, on account of his two years at New Mexico Military Institute not counting toward his NCAA eligibility, since NMMI is not an NCAA institution.” Per Barnett, Pavia’s lawyers don’t just want a now on-going sixth year of eligibility for Pavia, but a seventh year, arguing that the 4-to-play-5 rule should become 5-to-play-5 since “being a college football player is now a job, no different than playing in the NFL or working for Office Depot” and “the NCAA has no legal right to limit how long an individual can perform this job.” From Pavia’s brief: “To the extent the NCAA ever had a valid argument that its eligibility rules were not commercial because they only indirectly determined who could receive NIL compensation, and Mr. Pavia maintains they did not, that argument no longer exists after House (case); now, NCAA eligibility rules directly determine who receives revenue-sharing compensation from NCAA member schools.” Barnett notes a ruling on Tuesday’s hearing isn’t expected for months, but if Pavia wins and returns for 2026, expect his lawyers to argue next year for unlimited eligibility. Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock met with the media today in connection to the hiring process of a new football leader in Blacksburg. Of note from Babcock: “I also wanted to offer some clarification and relative transparency on our search process, which is in its preliminary stages. We will have a search committee with some internal staff support behind it. The committee will include members with extensive football experience and insight [from] board of visitors and campus representation and executive leaders. As the AD, I will support and advise the committee during the process. The committee's collective expertise and strength will enable us to make the best decision for the next head coach of the Hokies. This will be a collaborative decision and the committee voices will carry tremendous weight. We are confident our committee will make an outstanding selection. We'll be aligned with our board of visitors and campus leadership and certainly alignment within our committee when identifying our next head coach. [...] With additional financial support and new resources available to increase traditional and creative athletics revenue generation, I am confident you will soon see a modernized structure built for success in this rapidly changing environment of college athletics more in line with a professional football type organizational structure on the football side of things and from an athletic department standpoint, a structure and organization more in line with corporate business.” (link)

Ohio State netted $5.1M in revenue from its College Football Playoff first round home victory over Tennessee last December, according to The Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman, who notes that OSU’s total earnings were limited by a postseason structure that has schools sharing most of the revenue tied to hosting a first-round contest with the CFP. The Buckeyes grossed a total of $19.7M, but paid almost $14M to the CFP as well as $651K to staff and security. Most of the revenue came via ticket sales, as Ohio State brought in $15M from an announced crowd of 102,819, while other revenue included $1.3M from concessions, parking and merchandise sales and $67K in premium seating food and beverage sales. Per Kaufman, “the money from the home playoff game turned out to be extra cash. [AD Ross] Bjork said initial budget projections for the 2025 fiscal year did not factor potential income from such an event.” Bjork: “A $5 million net is nothing to sneeze at, especially when you didn’t budget for it, and then you look at the competitive piece. You don’t want to host, because you want to be in the top-four, you want the bye. Now in this case, it worked in our favor.” (link)

The Wisconsin State Journal’s Todd D. Milewski observes a dropoff in season ticket sales appears to be a primary reason behind a 10% decrease in Wisconsin home football attendance YoY from the same time period in 2024, noting that the school also had a 10% drop in the number of general public season tickets sold between 2024 and 2025. Overall, UW sold 38,082 season tickets for general seating areas in 2025, compared to 42,197 in 2024 and 41,206 in 2023. Wisconsin Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Luis Hernandez tells Milewski “the 2024 season ticket sales figure was a high-water mark” and “the schedule is one of the factors that influences season ticket sales and renewals. Pricing is another, and … Wisconsin analyzes secondary-market ticket prices and discretionary spending trends.” At $399, the cost of a UW football season ticket didn’t change from 2024 to 2025, but “the total cost of many tickets went up because of an increase in the minimum donation required. The total number of season tickets sold for 2025 at Camp Randall was 54,828, including 12,589 to students and 4,157 in suites and club seats. The suites and club total was an 8% drop over 2024.” (link)

In its annual report, Fairfield highlights “Built for Life” fundraising success totaling $2.91M for FY25. That includes all-time highs of $2.68M in institutional support and 3,295 total gifts. Stags AD Paul Schlickmann also touches on the Stags’ House settlement preparations after opting in, which have included “a partnership with Accelerate Sports Ventures, the procurement and activation of Teamworks, the creation of our Competitive Excellence Fund in support of NIL opportunities for our student-athletes, the addition of a Senior Compliance administrator, and the recent hire of a Director of NIL Operations and Player Relations.” (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill suggests it’s “possible that too much is being made of Nielsen’s ‘big data’ numbers. The old ‘panel only’ numbers are still produced and in those numbers total College Football viewing is up +16% through Week 3. The growth isn’t just a change in measurement.” (link)

The NCAA and RQ+ are collaborating on the Next Generation Officiating Initiative, expanding upon the Association’s efforts to increase interest and education within the world of men's basketball officiating. Running from October-March, the free six-month virtual course for up-and-coming basketball officials will deliver targeted professional development content on topics related to the art and science of officiating with all non-Division I officials, specifically Division II, Division III, junior college, NAIA and high school officials, eligible to register. Content during the virtual portion will include training videos and interactive modules that discuss topics such as effectively working with your crew, best practices when making calls on the floor and how to interact with coaches. There will also be opportunities to have conversations with other officials about current trends throughout the season. Following the conclusion of the virtual courses in March, 100 participants will be selected to attend the in-person Next Generation of Officiating program in Indianapolis, the site of the 2026 NCAA Division I, II and III Men's Basketball Championships. Florida Citrus Sports has selected Wasserman and its Rights Sales division to secure a new naming-rights deal for Camping World Stadium, current home to both the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and Pop Tarts Bowl. Wasserman’s involvement comes approximately two months after Florida Citrus Sports noted it was searching for a 10-year stadium deal to take it through $400M in upcoming upgrades after Florida Citrus Sports and Camping World mutually agreed to let their active deal expire. The Tuscaloosa News’ Chase Goodbread reports when queried about the possibility of a future SEC-Big Ten football challenge, in the aftermath of the league’s recent decision on moving to a nine-game conference slate, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey “wasn't necessarily excited about the possibility, but he didn't dismiss it, either.” Sankey: “My observation is, there are three ways to do the scheduling. One is what we do now, which is the schools work it out. The second is, the conference offices are more involved, but not directive in trying to coordinate matchups. The third would be conference-established. [Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Petitti] and I will continue to talk. It's really hard, so I don't want to overpredict, because I've seen conferences make declarations over the last decade, decade and a half of 'this is what we're going to do,' with a conference colleague. It's a bit more complicated with other commitments, and when games are played.” Goodbread notes that a challenge “could take any number of forms, with the most impactful on scheduling being a format under which all 16 SEC teams face a school from the Big Ten, which has 18 teams, in a given season. On a much smaller scale, it could be a much smaller number of games, or even one.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua tells the Scholastic student magazine that he views this transitional period in college athletics as a broader opportunity that calls for accountability, strategic vision, and a renewed focus on differentiating Notre Dame. While much of the revenue sharing will be used to support football and basketball, Bevacqua notes: “That imbalance reflects broader realities in the sports economy. But we have to ensure that we don’t lose what makes college athletics, and Notre Dame in particular, so special. Our identity has always been about more than just competition. It’s about integrity, education and excellence.” Bevacqua adds of roster limits: “That’s not something we’re comfortable with. We’re advocating for grace periods, transitional support and thoughtful implementation. We owe it to our student-athletes to get this right. … College athletics is not professional sports. Nor should it be. Our job is to ensure these young men and women compete at the highest level while earning a top-tier education. That balance is harder to maintain in this new era, but it’s also what makes us different.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek remarked on Monday that when it comes to paying student-athletes there are “really two major paths you have now in college athletics. You have the revenue-sharing path, which we have figured out, and you have legitimate name, image, and likeness. … If we can operate within those two lanes in college athletics, we would be in a really, really good spot. But we have some schools that have decided to find a third lane, which I will call illegitimate NIL.” Yurachek adds: “So you have to decide as an athletic director, are you gonna get out in this lane that you know you're not supposed to be in and operate without the highest level of integrity, or do you wanna stay in these two lanes? And that's where the rub is coming right now in college athletics. Until we get our enforcement agency up and running you're gonna continue to have schools operating in that third lane, and that's a bad place to be in my opinion. It's bad for college athletics, and I don't wanna operate there, but I think to be competitive, we may have to figure out what that third lane looks like for the University of Arkansas. But we're in a good place otherwise." (link, link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell’s “ambitious plan to save college sports” originated through the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF), “a conservative, free-market think tank with no real footprint in the world of college sports.” Back in May, TPPF Chief Researcher Derek Cohen published a pair of articles arguing the NCAA should be scrapped for failing in its fundamental mission. Cohen wrote: “Since 1906, the NCAA has labored to uphold fairness, amateurism, and integrity in collegiate sports. Yet as legal mandates, cultural shifts and market forces have redefined the landscape, the NCAA has become a hollow institution that resists reform, evades responsibility and cedes authority to state legislatures and market actors.” Per Libit, Cohen’s alternative was “replacing the NCAA with a new, Congressionally chartered organization modeled after the U.S. Olympic Committee. He coined it ‘the United States Collegiate Athletics Corporation.’” While Cohen’s proposal went largely unnoticed at the time, Campbell “emailed them to Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt and vice chancellor Eric Bentley, along with a one-page legislative memo titled the Saving College Sports Act. The proposal closely mirrored Cohen’s blueprint, down to the very name of his new proposed NCAA replacement.” Hocutt: “I found myself intrigued by the establishment of the USCAC. I believe most within the industry would be supportive about the establishment of such an organization replacing the NCAA.” Since then, Campbell has launched his own non-profit, Saving College Sports, to advocate for his reform plan while actively lobbying lawmakers in opposition to the SCORE Act. The Knight Commission has sent a letter to leaders of the House Judiciary, Energy and Commerce, and Education and Workforce committees related to the SCORE Act. The commission reiterates its past recommendation to shift “all financial incentives related to the sport of FBS football to the CFP, thus removing FBS football-related incentives from the NCAA distribution. … This shift would immediately increase the value of NCAA incentives to all Division I schools for offering sports other than FBS football by more than $60M annually, according to an independent analysis produced for the Commission by [CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP]. This change essentially would tie the entire pool of NCAA opportunity incentives of more than $200M annually to Division I sports other than FBS football (i.e., women’s and men’s collegiate Olympic sports and FCS football). Any reductions in NCAA incentives that some FBS football institutions may experience with this shift in funding opportunity incentives for the sport of FBS football will be negligible due to the exponential rise in CFP revenues.” Full letter. Stony Brook has officially begun renovations on both Joe Nathan Field and University Field, home of the school’s baseball and softball stadiums, respectively. At University Field, the Seawolves will install a new turf outfield. Additionally, both fields will undergo various bullpen improvements, and the outfield fences will be replaced with padded walls. Finally, a new warning track will be installed at Joe Nathan Field. Seawolves AD Shawn Heilbron: “This is definitely overdue. I remember when I first got here, there were a lot of things that we wanted to do and this was quite high on the list. It would bother me every day driving by that since we hadn’t really touched that area outside some very minor enhancements. It’s definitely overdue and definitely needed in the CAA.” (link)

Cal endured one of the most grueling travel schedules in men’s basketball during its first season in the ACC, logging 22,691 miles and making four East Coast trips. Bears HC Mark Madsen and his staff spent the summer working with diagnostic professionals to help student-athletes be better prepared for the travel schedule. They even heard from a sleep expert who once worked with NASA astronauts to teach them ways to lessen the effects of the travel fatigue commonly known as jet lag. The plan heading into the season includes early morning practices while at home to simulate East Coast starting times, leaving a day earlier to allow more time for recovery from long flights and doing a better job of staying hydrated. Madsen: “We’ve had our people looking into all aspects of our travel challenges. We’ve made some decisions we think will help us deal with it better than we did last year.” (link)

Credit Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti with helping league CMO Mary Beck become “a leading voice in college sports,” per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, as Beck is part of the publication’s new Game Changers cohort. Beck: “He would call and mention things to me, and I would say, ‘I haven’t worked for you in five years.’ So when he called and said, ‘Are you going to come help me with this [at the Big Ten]? And I said, ‘Is this the second time you’re offering me a job without actually offering me a job?’” The first time came early in her career when Petitti was helping roll out the MLB Network, and now years later, Beck has become integral to Petitti’s efforts on the college level, overseeing marketing, branding, licensing, retail, partner integration and social media, while leading the integration of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington, overseeing the promotion of the Big Ten football championship game, men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and supporting Big Ten alums competing in the Olympics. Beck: “Having the opportunity to be here at this time where there’s such transformation going on in college sports [is exciting]. To look at things and say, ‘How can we look at this with a fresh lens?’ Or, ‘Where can we take something that we had done at this level’ and if our goal in the future is to be at this level, instead, what is it that we need to do differently to get there?” (link)

Big 12 COO/General Counsel Jessica Presnall is also part of SBJ’s Game Changer class & “has been one of the legal minds intimately involved in the creation and evolution of the House settlement over the past 18 months,” writes SBJ’s Ben Portnoy who observes that her work has helped “create the College Sports Commission … along with co-authoring key components of the settlement, including the definition of associated entity or individual (the new NCAA booster definition) that sets the framework for regulation of third-party NIL agreements.” A part of the league for nearly a decade, her efforts have extended beyond Power Four litigation, with Presnall serving as the lead counsel on the Big 12’s extension of its media rights contracts with Fox and ESPN and on the league’s admission of Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado and Utah from the Pac-12. Presnall: “We are, in real time, setting the precedent for the way that this rule is going to be written, the way it’s going to be interpreted, how it’s going to apply, whether there’s going to be a waiver. I’ll fully be able to appreciate it a couple years from now when I’m not in it, but it is cool, if you take a step back and think about the impact and really the completely new structure that we’re building from the ground up.” (link)

Another SBJ Game Changer, involvement in collegiate athletics was always the expectation for Ohio State Deputy AD for Sport Administration and Student-Athlete Development/NIL Carey Hoyt, but it was coaching, not administration, that seemed her most logical path to get there. A former competitive gymnast, her foray into college sports eventually led to securing the Women’s Gymnastics HC position with the Buckeyes. So, how did Hoyt end up on the administrative side? Hoyt: “After the really great season [at Ohio State], I still felt like, ‘Hey, I don’t want to be a gymnastics coach when I’m 50 years old.’ I knew that about myself, and I also had done the sport for so long, burned out on the judging, and all of that. I started talking to [former AD] Gene Smith in 2013 about moving to administration, and he was like, ‘No, you’ll be bored. You’ll be bored.’ I had an opportunity to coach my alma mater [Penn State] in 2017, and I used a little bit as leverage. I said, ‘Hey, I’m not gonna go on this interview, but if I do, I’m gonna negotiate an opportunity in administration after getting the program back on track.’ … Over the weekend, [Smith] created a position for me.” Since then, Hoyt’s focus centers on managing a budget of more than $130M and more than 55 full-time employees within the Buckeyes football program, while overseeing football nonconference scheduling, daily operations of the program related to budgeting, roster management, personnel, compliance and NIL.
