The NCAA pushes back on reports that six Wofford men's basketball players were deemed ineligible for using their meal plan while living in off-campus housing, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Terriers HC Dwight Perry. From the NCAA: “This is not accurate, the NCAA did not suspend student-athletes at this school and did not take any action against any athletic department personnel at this school.” (link)

Washington State President Elizabeth Cantwell joins Cougars AD Anne McCoy on the Inside WSU Athletics podcast, and Cantwell explains that “I came into Washington State University saying athletics is massively important…and I think I’ve tried my very best to live that.” Cantwell weighs in on the reality of revenue sharing and NIL, explaining that “if you think about NIL from the president’s financial perspective, it’s a mandate that we have to fulfill for our students. If you think about it from the student-athlete perspective, it is: I have to learn all about finance and a whole bunch of matters associated with revenues that I didn’t have to learn 10 years ago. … So when I think about the complexity of what a president has to consider, we have to raise enough NIL to be of use and value to our student-athletes and our coaches and the whole world in which we are now competing – not just on the field and not just in athletics, but financially. And I have to really think about how we are serving our student-athletes in that world where they have to know an awful lot about what that is. So, it’s complicated.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione tells ESPN’s Dari Nokah that OU and Oklahoma State are “not close” to resuming the Bedlam series. “Believe me. We've had conversations several times, and this is not, I want to say this is as clean as possible. This is not meant to stir up anything because every time we mention it, it stirs up some kind of false narrative. And it's the same thing that we've discussed with Oklahoma State. They have several non-conference series that they scheduled long before this and they've scheduled them on into the early ‘30s and they just don't want to drop those games…and I get that there's a financial component to buying out of contracts. … So we've had ongoing conversations, they've been positive in a way, but there aren't any dates that are available for both schools until probably well into the latter part of the ‘30s. So we'll see.” Castiglione says of the SEC rivals reveal that one will certainly be Texas. “So it's really just down to the other two. And I do know the second one because they've reached out and talked about scheduling that particular permanent series. But the third one remains a mystery, and I'm kind of glad because some people are talking about it and I think they might get disappointed it could change. … And believe me, I want to tell everybody out there outside of Texas we have not put in any kind of pressure that it's got to be this or that because there are other factors involved. And when you start pushing on one, you might end up with something you don't want on the other.” (link)

Elon AD Jenn Strawley touches on a number of topics in the latest “Igniting the Phoenix” newsletter, writing on this week’s news of the upcoming merger of Elon and Queens Charlotte: “This potential partnership represents a transformative opportunity to expand Elon’s footprint and elevate our impact, particularly through enhanced support for graduate education in the growing and dynamic city of Charlotte. For Elon Athletics, our focus remains clear. We are boldly committed to Phoenix Rising, the vision and strategic plan for Elon Athletics that was approved by the Board of Trustees last year. While we are fully engaged in and energized by the broader campus conversations around this merger, our priority continues to be delivering on our mission of providing a transformative experience for our student-athletes, grounded in competitive and academic excellence.” Strawley also celebrates the athletic department’s recent fundraising success, noting the department raised over $644K at the 18th annual Night of the Phoenix to mark a 23% YoY increase from 2024 while lifting the all-time event total to more than $4.3M. Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joined the Burns & Gambo show, where he was asked how close the Sun Devils are to playing a Week 3 football matchup against Kansas in London next year. He explained: “Not ready to talk specifics on that one, but we’ve been approached for a lot of these games internationally, and I think it’s a credit to the program that Coach Dillingham and the coaches and players have been building. The fact that there’s a lot of interest in international college football, there’s groups in Europe, there’s groups in South America, groups in the Middle East that are looking at it. They’ve all approached us with interest in a game there, and I think that speaks volumes of how the brand of Sun Devil football continues to build.” More from Rossini. (link)

Kansas will not hold the Kansas Relays in 2026 as part of a broader effort to reduce expenses for the athletic department, according to Jayhawks AD Travis Goff, who explains: “It really is tied most directly to expense management and just needing to get our legs underneath us in this new chapter with the House settlement having gone through, having [revenue sharing] and these new kind of required expense lines. … This isn’t ‘never again.’ This is just, ‘We don’t yet know how best to manage the Relays going forward.’ And so for the betterment of the big picture, we’ve at least had to make a short-term decision here.” Goff goes on to say: “You could almost view it as, keep the Relays but we’d have to find additional cuts in track and field to justify (that), and where we kind of netted out on that was we don’t want to pull back in other areas of investment in track and field just to keep and salvage the Relays. Because we think that would have a more negative impact on KU track and field.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork was asked what it would take for OSU’s 2010 wins to be restored and noted that "I had to testify in front of a legislative committee at the state capitol, and I hadn't heard about — there was actually a proposed state bill that would get those [wins] back. I heard about that. It's something, look, I think, given the climate, I think you have to at least ask the question. We haven't really pursued a whole lot, but there are a few questions that we have asked. Who knows where it'll go?" Regardless, Bjork believes fans should remember the season the same way. "Those things are usually just a piece of paper. We know what happened in those years. I mean, I was part of [an Ole Miss football] program that had to vacate some wins. We still won the Sugar Bowl here at Ole Miss because everyone was there. We held up the trophy. And so those are the things that you go through. But yeah, it's definitely a different climate. The conversations are a lot different than they were before." (link)

The number of former N.C. State student-athletes accusing university officials of not protecting them from a trainer’s alleged sexual abuse and harassment on campus has grown to 14 men, according to a new lawsuit filed on Wednesday. The complaint also alleges that former Wolfpack AD Debbie Yow was aware of multiple complaints about the head trainer long before the trainer resigned. Kerry Sutton, the attorney representing the 14 individuals, says: “Athletes afraid of losing their scholarship or their spot on the team, trainers afraid of reporting their boss, coaches afraid of getting involved, directors afraid of harming NCSU’s reputation. [Former Director of Sports Medicine Robert] Murphy took advantage of those fears to get away with abusing what we believe may turn out to be hundreds of former Wolfpack athletes.” Attorney Seth Blum in a written statement asserts that after three years of representing Murphy, there hasn’t been “one scrap of credible evidence that he assaulted anyone,” adding: “He is a talented professional who has been targeted as an early victim in the new frontier of mass torts: suing universities for spurious allegations of sexual assault. Put simply, Robert Murphy did not do this.” A spokesperson for NC State said the university does not comment on pending litigation. More from The Charlotte Observer’s Virginia Bridges. (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers provides more context on the $49M Smart v. NCAA settlement connected to back pay for volunteer baseball coaches who were part of coaching staffs from late-2019 to mid-2023. Rogers: “The overall settlement figure is $49.25 million. Of that total, $32.9 million is expected to go directly to former volunteer and unpaid coaches — the figure for the number of coaches receiving those funds is expected to be over 1,000. Of the remaining funds, $14.8 will go toward attorney fees, $1.4 million will go toward various costs and expenses related to the class-action settlement, $30,150 will go to the settlement administrator, $35,000 will go to an economist, $7,500 in incentives will be paid out, and $100,000 will go straight into a contingency fund. The amount that volunteer coaches around the country will receive is expected to vary, although the average funds received is expected to be around $36,000.” (link)

When Endeavor bought On Location from the NFL five years ago, the company essentially focused on selling Super Bowl experiences to corporate brands and high-net-worth individuals. Now run by TKO, On Location “has been upping the ante ever since in order to keep pace with fans’ willingness to pay exorbitant sums for Instagrammable experiences,” according to Puck’s John Ourand, who notes that [TKO President Mark Shapiro] said during this week’s IMG x RedBird Summit: “Imagine saying to Roger Goodell 10 years ago, or [Paul] Tagliabue 20 years before that, ‘Okay, now after the cheerleaders run out at the Super Bowl, but before the players, we’re going to have a golf cart come out onto the field – just a quick little dipsy doo, with 10 people drinking in concealed containers, and screaming, and yelling, and then they peel off to the sideline. And for that, they’re each going to pay $85K.’ I’m barely exaggerating. And with that is going to come the ticket, food, travel. Guess what? That’s happening now at the Super Bowl. It’s not just sitting on the 50-yard line, eating and drinking. You get to take a picture of the Super Bowl trophy, and go on the field after the game, where the winning players are onstage. Yes, that’s happening. It’s sitting right next to Dana White for three fights of a UFC fight card for $350K.” (link)

Imagine if the NCAA didn’t exist and a federally commissioned corporation governed collegiate athletics. In his latest column for On3, Ross Dellenger observes scenarios like that “are or were on the table” as proposed SCORE Act changes from Cody Campbell’s Savings College Sports non-profit as the legislation works its way through the House. A vote on the SCORE Act has been delayed, in part, by proposed edits to the bill that “strike at the heart of much of the disagreement among Republicans and Democrats over college sports legislation: Does the NCAA and conferences oversee the industry’s future, or is it an independent entity?” Among the proposed edits is the establishment of “the United States Collegiate Athletics Corporation (USCAC) as a ‘congressionally chartered’ corporation to govern the industry, replacing the NCAA. The USCAC would govern through a board of former athletes and school constituents and shall operate with ‘limited government oversight.’” While acknowledging “some level of government oversight,” Campbell notes the USCAC “would operate without federally appropriated funds and that board members would include conference representatives and athletes. But he leaves open the door for the board to be ‘completely independent and unaffiliated with schools or conferences.’” With amending the Sports Broadcasting Act to consolidate media rights at the center of his plan, Campbell remarks: “I don’t think the government should realign the conferences, but if you eliminate the economic incentives to have a trans-continental conference, the schools are going to do what makes sense. The conferences are incentivized to have a team in every time zone now. But pool all the media rights together and they don’t have that same incentive.” More. (link)

The North Carolina Board of Governors has approved the deferred compensation and buyout terms for incoming AD Steve Newmark. The dates, already laid out in Newmark’s contract, state that he will receive the deferred compensation on September 30 and December 31 of 2025; March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31 for calendar years 2026-2029; and March 31 and June 30 for the calendar year 2030. All told, Newmark can receive $1M in deferred compensation. In the event of termination, Newmark’s contract states deferred compensation for that year “shall be prorated based on completed months of service during the contract year.” (link)

Asked how he motivates the Texas Tech fundraising base, TTU AD Kirby Hocutt tells Salt Lake Jakes Take: “There’s no secret there. It’s a couple of things. One is being passionate about what you do, and I believe in the role that college athletics plays even as we’ve seen it change in the revenue share era. I believe that what we’re doing each and every day within our football program is making young men stronger and is preparing them for success in life whether it's in professional football or the business world. We’ve been so fortunate that we have donors who have stepped up in unbelievable ways to invest into our program. I try not to overcomplicate the formula. It’s all about talent acquisition right? You’ve got to recruit a roster that’s high level to compete. You’ve got to have great coaches, which we have with Coach [Joey] McGuire. … Third, it’s the resources and facilities. You’ve got to ask your donor base to invest into your program, and with the facilities we have here at Texas Tech, the resources we give Coach McGuire to recruit and to travel and to develop young people from strength & conditioning to nutrition to professional development, taking care of their bodies, we have the very best equipment and personnel here. Our donors see that and they want to be a part of the vision we are selling for Texas Tech football. We’re bullish about where we are and what our future is.” More with Hocutt. (link)

Beginning this weekend, the Big 12 will join the ACC in providing viewers the opportunity to watch replay reviews from the conference’s replay center for its broadcasts, per On3’s Brett McMurphy. The feature will be provided on all Big 12 games broadcast on Fox, ESPN and TNT, however, Friday’s Tulsa at Oklahoma State contest won’t offer replay review access because American Conference officials are officiating the game. For this year, the Big 12 will provide just replay center video, but plans to expand the set-up to offer both video and audio for all games next season. (link)

The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman reports “six Wofford players have been deemed ineligible by the NCAA due to a communications issue involving off-campus housing that ultimately resulted in the firing of head coach Dwight Perry and associate head coach Tysor Anderson last week.“ Mark Peper, who represents four of those deemed ineligible, told Goodman that “all of the players fully support their request to have both Perry and Anderson reinstated” and “could elect to enter the portal if Perry and Anderson aren’t given their jobs back – which could put the program in danger of not being able to field a team this season.” Goodman continues: “Six players – including five juniors who transferred from other schools – were informed in the summer of 2025 they would be placed in upperclassmen dorms at Wofford. … Instead, they were placed in underclassmen dorms.” Peper: “That promise was not kept. Coach Anderson, who has always looked out for the players best interests, asked them if they wanted to keep their current dorm assignment or rent an apartment off campus and pay for it themselves. They chose the latter, and Coach Anderson properly informed administration of their plan to do so.” Peper added that “five days after classes began they were forced to break their lease to remain eligible. … The players were informed on Sept. 17 that the NCAA deemed them ineligible for using their meal plan while living off campus, which had never been discussed with them previously. Peper said the alleged ‘impermissible benefits’ they received ranged from $84 to $108.” (link)

Fundraising Developments… ➤ Creighton launches Fly Together, a nearly $300M donor-funded initiative to reshape a 12-block recreational and athletic corridor on the east side of campus, anchored by the largest gift in school history, a $100M commitment from the Heider Family Foundation. Encompassing 11 new or upgraded facilities and outdoor spaces covering approximately 700K sq. ft., additions and enhancements are set to include a new Student Fitness Center; upgrades to the Rasmussen Fitness & Sports Center; the creation of the Jaywalk, a new pedestrian thoroughfare that will connect Creighton to the Builder's District; a new Sports Performance Center for Creighton’s 300 student-athletes; improvements to current athletics buildings and an accompanying team facility to complement new baseball and softball fields. (link) ➤ Virginia is the recipient of two anonymous seven-figure commitments to establish endowed scholarships in support of the men’s lacrosse program. The first of these gifts made by a program alumnus established the Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Alumni Bicentennial Scholarship Fund. This $1M commitment, when coupled with UVA’s Bicentennial Scholarship Fund 50% match, was made to fully endow an out-of-state scholarship. Since the establishment of this fund earlier this year, seven other men’s lacrosse alumni have made multi-year commitments to grow this endowment. Inspired by the establishment of the first scholarship, another anonymous donor made the largest commitment in the history of the program with the creation of the Men’s Lacrosse Family Legacy Scholarship Fund, which is designed to preserve the program’s legacy and secure its future. SIx additional families have already made multi-year commitments in support. (link) ➤ Miami (FL) has received a $1.81M gift from Max Chira to support construction of life-sized statues of the U's two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks – Vinny Testaverde and Gino Torretta. (link) ➤ Former Tennessee Men’s Basketball student-athlete/current Charlotte Hornets (NBA) forward Grant Williams is donating $1.5M to the UT Foundation. Overall, $1M of the gift is committed to the athletics department with $750K going to the Men’s Basketball Excellence Fund and $250K to the My All Unrestricted Fund for Softball, while the other $500K will be utilized to create the Grant Williams Scholarship Endowment within the Haslam College of Business. The NCAA announces an additional men’s and women’s team will have the opportunity to compete in the 2025 Division I Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships. With fields previously comprised of 31 teams, the DI Men’s & Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country Oversight Committee members feel “adding a 32nd team will elevate the championship competition and student-athlete experience, while being comfortably accommodated on the championship courses where the competitions are held.” The alteration is the first since 1998 and will increase the field size per gender from 255 to 262 total runners. Scheduling Specifics… ➤ The SEC plans to reveal its nine-game 2026 league slate for all conference football teams next Tuesday in primetime on the SEC Network, according to CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello. All 16 SEC teams will have three permanent rivals on the schedule that will be reviewed every four years, leaving the possibility of further scheduling changes beyond 2030. Each team will also rotate through six other league opponents each season, providing the chance for each school to face every SEC team at least once every two years. Per Marcello, “most athletic directors across the SEC have not yet been told which teams will be assigned as ‘annual’ opponents. Oklahoma and Texas have been assured that the Red River Rivalry will continue every year, as well as traditional rivalries such as Alabama-Auburn and Ole Miss-Mississippi State. Arkansas and Missouri have also been assigned as ‘annual’ opponents.” (link) ➤ The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna reports “the 2025-26 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will include all 18 teams, one year after including 15. This will add a day, March 10, to the tournament in Chicago. The women’s tournament in Indianapolis will stay at 15.” (link) ➤ The Post and Courier’s Scott Hamilton reports Arizona State and Kansas are slated to play at Wembley Stadium in London on Sept. 19, 2026, as part of a multi-year deal for an event called the Union Jack Classic. Per Hamilton, “a source close to the Union Jack Classic said discussions were held with multiple conferences and teams, but described the Big 12 as ‘enthusiastic’ while organizers continued proposing the concept. That person also said talks are underway to potentially feature Big 12 matchups in the next two Union Jack Classics.” The match-up would be just the second American college football game ever played in London after Richmond beat Boston University in a FCS contest back on Oct. 16, 1988. ESPN’s Pete Thamel adds: “The deal still requires a waiver to move a previously scheduled game against Middle Tennessee to Week 0 and some finalization of deal points. It would be the sport’s third overseas game next year. One of the drivers of Kansas giving up the home game, per sources, is that they are still at reduced capacity amid their stadium re-construction.” (link)
