U.S. Congressman Russell Fry (R-SC) joins the Next Up with Adam Breneman podcast to advocate for the SCORE Act and says the “feedback has largely been good. And I think what we’ve done is we didn’t craft this out of nowhere. We had these thoughtful listening sessions where we listened to the players, we listened to the coaches and the families and the schools, and put this product together. And so, when you’re talking about it, everyone has probably components that they might want to tweak or adjust. And certainly as this bill progresses through, those are going to be ongoing. But everyone also recognizes the really big impact that college sports has and that we have to fix this. We have an obligation to do it now. It’s on an unsustainable path. Everyone understands that. But the components of the bill, when you talk about them individually with people, they love it.” Fry also remarks that “there are some in Congress that want the employee model. But they’re not listening to the people who have testified. They’re not listening to the college athletes themselves. And I think a lot of people understand that that’s a non-starter for many in Congress. But there are certain people that are pushing that. Most of the — I would say the beef – that I’ve heard about it to the extent that there is any is, ‘Hey, let’s tweak this over here. Let’s adjust this over here. We think that could be a better way.’ And, so you know, there really is an esprit de corps, if you will, of people who want to do the right thing. So there’s some really honest discussions that are taking place right now on what that looks like but we all want to fix this problem.” Full podcast. (link)

Stanford offers an inside look at new AD John Donahoe’s first week on The Farm, observing that the concept of servant leadership has been a guiding principle throughout his career. Donahoe: “The role of a leader is to serve the purpose of the organization you’re part of. To serve your customer, or in this case, your student-athletes. To serve your teammates. To serve the communities in which you operate. As a relatively young adult, I just fell in love with that concept because service is such an important source of evergreen inspiration, commitment, and, very importantly, resilience. It answers the question of, 'Why am I doing what I'm doing?' For me, service has been a great 'why,' and servant leadership has been a great 'why.'" On the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics: “There's a strong commitment from Stanford University to have Stanford Athletics be our very, very best - to be on our front toes and continue to lead in today's college athletics environment and tomorrow's. … Everybody is behind the commitment to have Stanford continue to lead. I’m excited about the opportunity we have ahead. We have unmatched tradition and history. We have incredible athletes, incredible coaches. We have strong facilities. I’m confident that by engaging the entire community together, we can build a future that we are as proud of as we are our past.” More. (link)

ESPN’s Andrea Adelson and David Hale report the ACC is closing in on a scheduling format change “that will require all league teams to play at least 10 games against Power 4 competition, though the number of intraconference games played -- eight or nine -- remains a sticking point.” League ADs are slated to meet in Charlotte on Monday to “discuss the details of what will either be a move to a nine-game conference slate with one additional Power 4 game required out of conference or an ‘8+2’ model that will provide more flexibility to schools that already have an annual nonconference rival.” Clemson AD Graham Neff: “The ACC committing to go to 10 Power 4 games is a big step forward. It's indicative of where college football is and leans into emphasizing the importance of strength of schedule and more Power 4 matchups.” Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich: “Let's look to try to set our course. The discussions will happen Monday, but decisions will hopefully happen shortly thereafter. Hopefully, we'll come out of that with a consensus that leads the ACC to a final conclusion.” More. (link)

Sticking in the ACC, Georgia Tech AD Ryan Alpert talks capitalizing on last Saturday’s football win over Clemson: “After the locker room (celebration Saturday), we had a revenue team meeting, which (was focused on) our internal and external stakeholders. How are we gonna engage them? How are we gonna sell tickets? How are we gonna get more students in the building for this (next) weekend? With three home games in a row, no matter where you are, that’s difficult for a fan base to give up those three weekends. But how do we celebrate this win, but also turn the page and be able to generate more revenue, licensing? Trying to turn a great win on the field, celebrate it, but also, how can we generate revenue, selling tickets and engaging our fan base? [...] A win like that on the national stage, it triggers people’s attention. Now it’s our job to be able to bring them in. I think we’ve been a lot more aggressive from a marketing standpoint. Our ticket sales team is calling everybody that’s bought tickets in the last seven years. We’ve got an AI-generated opportunity to bring lead lists in and engage those folks. We’ve got to become Atlanta’s hometown college football team. It’s really important from a branding standpoint. You didn’t have to go here, but you can still love what’s going on.” (link)

With UCLA Football 11 years removed from its last 10-win season, averaging 44K fans at the 90K-seat Rose Bowl during this year’s 0-3 start and having just dismissed HC DeShaun Foster, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Ira Gorawara question how to fix what ails the Bruins’ program, writing: “The biggest issue with UCLA Football … has been a lack of financial resources. The Bruins had never been USC when it came to money or commitment to football, and UCLA has piled up more than $200M in athletic department debt in recent years. But that disparity — fractures of which showed throughout much of this century — became much more of a problem in 2021, once name, image and likeness arrived.” Despite an expectation of utilizing more than $13M annually in revenue share money toward football, former Bruins HC Rick Neuheisel comments: “I worry that UCLA’s football program, based on the past, has not been as forthcoming with the football side of things and with the rest of the department. As the football coach there, it was just incredibly frustrating fighting for every little thing. And I love UCLA, it just breaks my heart.” (link)

The Athletic’s Seth Emerson ponders how much today’s college football players are still part of campus life, noting “in this new era of NIL, online classes, luxurious football-only facilities and unlimited transfers, college football players are living a new version of the college experience.” Syracuse cornerback Berry Buxton III, who does school online-only to work at night so he can focus on football during the day, remarks: “Sometimes I do miss some of the moments when you’re in class with your teammates, and you have moments where you’re all in class helping each other, or you’re talking about class after class, walking to class, being in Schine Student Center, having lunch with your teammates.” The move to build “essentially all-inclusive” football team facilities has also provided a way of isolating players from campus life with the “lavish new facilities” making it much less likely a player will spend free-time elsewhere. Penn Adjunct Professor Karen Weaver: “They were creating an environment where the team could just be together. But anytime you do something like that, how much interaction do they have with other students on campus? [...] It’s really hard to say they’re part of the student body. That’s part of the advocacy the college presidents make, they say well they’re just like regular students. Well they’re not. Look at some of those facilities. They’re palatial. Their experience is different.” (link)

A Louisiana federal court has denied a USCIS motion to dismiss Arizona State women’s basketball student-athlete Last-Tear Poa's lawsuit against the agency over the agency denying her petition for a P-1A visa, according to Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich, who adds: “The lawsuit is over a post-NIL gap that exists between F-1 (student) and P-1A (‘internationally recognized athletes’) visas. Student-athletes have traditionally gotten F-1 visas, but F-1 regulations place significant limitations on holders' abilities to make money in the US. So Poa applied for a P-1A visa. She was denied on the basis that P-1A visaholders must be coming to the US ‘solely for the purpose of [playing sports].’ USCIS regulations hold that student-athletes come for education, not ‘solely for the purpose of [playing sports].’ Poa argued that the manner by which courts are asked by USCIS to interpret ‘temporarily and solely’ is contradictory: permitting dual roles as ‘student-athletes’ for F-1 visas while precluding it for P-1A visas. She argued that's arbitrary and capricious under the APA. Importantly, the court did NOT answer this question, merely finding instead that it needs a full post-discovery administrative record to make a ruling here. But this ruling keeps alive a lawsuit that will clearly have a major, major impact on college sports.” (link)

With Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications being paid $20K this year by the UF-focused Florida Victorious collective "as part of an arrangement that incentivizes the journalism department to source ‘additional opportunities’ with third-party companies for NIL deals,” Sportico’s Daniel Libit reports the journalism school is also eligible to to earn a 3% commission on any brokered third-party deals on the collective’s behalf. As part of the agreement, the journalism school will be paid a monthly retainer of $1,666.67 to manage an in-house agency called Two Bits Creative, consisting of a team of student interns—including a graphic designer, videographer and video editors—who “will be made available for office hours at Florida Victorious, as well as for approved events.” The students will work “under the direction” of Florida Victorious to produce content for both the collective “and it’s [sic] athletes,” while also conducting “social sentiment tracking.” Asserting itself as a “first-of-its-kind” initiative, Two Bits Creative’s participating students will receive course credit but not financial compensation and student-athletes are currently ineligible to participate. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports Major League Baseball is banning team officials from watching amateur players or collecting data on them for a monthslong period over the winter, warning executives "the amateur baseball calendar is putting young players at dramatic risk of future injury." The seven-page document, which grew out of a December MLB report on pitching injuries across all baseball levels, was distributed to high-ranking personnel at all 30 MLB clubs with the league hoping its Amateur Recovery Period Policy -- which covers high school juniors and seniors from Oct. 15 to Jan. 15 and college players from Nov. 15 to Jan. 15 -- will "alleviate the pressure on young players to forego rest and recovery, curb overuse, and keep players healthier as they strive for a future in professional baseball." During the down period, team employees will be barred from seeing any player covered by the policy in a baseball setting or from trying to procure video or third-party data on players. (link)

Washington State President Elizabeth Cantwell joins Cougars AD Anne McCoy on the Inside WSU Athletics podcast, and Cantwell explains that “I came into Washington State University saying athletics is massively important…and I think I’ve tried my very best to live that.” Cantwell weighs in on the reality of revenue sharing and NIL, explaining that “if you think about NIL from the president’s financial perspective, it’s a mandate that we have to fulfill for our students. If you think about it from the student-athlete perspective, it is: I have to learn all about finance and a whole bunch of matters associated with revenues that I didn’t have to learn 10 years ago. … So when I think about the complexity of what a president has to consider, we have to raise enough NIL to be of use and value to our student-athletes and our coaches and the whole world in which we are now competing – not just on the field and not just in athletics, but financially. And I have to really think about how we are serving our student-athletes in that world where they have to know an awful lot about what that is. So, it’s complicated.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione tells ESPN’s Dari Nokah that OU and Oklahoma State are “not close” to resuming the Bedlam series. “Believe me. We've had conversations several times, and this is not, I want to say this is as clean as possible. This is not meant to stir up anything because every time we mention it, it stirs up some kind of false narrative. And it's the same thing that we've discussed with Oklahoma State. They have several non-conference series that they scheduled long before this and they've scheduled them on into the early ‘30s and they just don't want to drop those games…and I get that there's a financial component to buying out of contracts. … So we've had ongoing conversations, they've been positive in a way, but there aren't any dates that are available for both schools until probably well into the latter part of the ‘30s. So we'll see.” Castiglione says of the SEC rivals reveal that one will certainly be Texas. “So it's really just down to the other two. And I do know the second one because they've reached out and talked about scheduling that particular permanent series. But the third one remains a mystery, and I'm kind of glad because some people are talking about it and I think they might get disappointed it could change. … And believe me, I want to tell everybody out there outside of Texas we have not put in any kind of pressure that it's got to be this or that because there are other factors involved. And when you start pushing on one, you might end up with something you don't want on the other.” (link)

Elon AD Jenn Strawley touches on a number of topics in the latest “Igniting the Phoenix” newsletter, writing on this week’s news of the upcoming merger of Elon and Queens Charlotte: “This potential partnership represents a transformative opportunity to expand Elon’s footprint and elevate our impact, particularly through enhanced support for graduate education in the growing and dynamic city of Charlotte. For Elon Athletics, our focus remains clear. We are boldly committed to Phoenix Rising, the vision and strategic plan for Elon Athletics that was approved by the Board of Trustees last year. While we are fully engaged in and energized by the broader campus conversations around this merger, our priority continues to be delivering on our mission of providing a transformative experience for our student-athletes, grounded in competitive and academic excellence.” Strawley also celebrates the athletic department’s recent fundraising success, noting the department raised over $644K at the 18th annual Night of the Phoenix to mark a 23% YoY increase from 2024 while lifting the all-time event total to more than $4.3M. Arizona State AD Graham Rossini joined the Burns & Gambo show, where he was asked how close the Sun Devils are to playing a Week 3 football matchup against Kansas in London next year. He explained: “Not ready to talk specifics on that one, but we’ve been approached for a lot of these games internationally, and I think it’s a credit to the program that Coach Dillingham and the coaches and players have been building. The fact that there’s a lot of interest in international college football, there’s groups in Europe, there’s groups in South America, groups in the Middle East that are looking at it. They’ve all approached us with interest in a game there, and I think that speaks volumes of how the brand of Sun Devil football continues to build.” More from Rossini. (link)

Kansas will not hold the Kansas Relays in 2026 as part of a broader effort to reduce expenses for the athletic department, according to Jayhawks AD Travis Goff, who explains: “It really is tied most directly to expense management and just needing to get our legs underneath us in this new chapter with the House settlement having gone through, having [revenue sharing] and these new kind of required expense lines. … This isn’t ‘never again.’ This is just, ‘We don’t yet know how best to manage the Relays going forward.’ And so for the betterment of the big picture, we’ve at least had to make a short-term decision here.” Goff goes on to say: “You could almost view it as, keep the Relays but we’d have to find additional cuts in track and field to justify (that), and where we kind of netted out on that was we don’t want to pull back in other areas of investment in track and field just to keep and salvage the Relays. Because we think that would have a more negative impact on KU track and field.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork was asked what it would take for OSU’s 2010 wins to be restored and noted that "I had to testify in front of a legislative committee at the state capitol, and I hadn't heard about — there was actually a proposed state bill that would get those [wins] back. I heard about that. It's something, look, I think, given the climate, I think you have to at least ask the question. We haven't really pursued a whole lot, but there are a few questions that we have asked. Who knows where it'll go?" Regardless, Bjork believes fans should remember the season the same way. "Those things are usually just a piece of paper. We know what happened in those years. I mean, I was part of [an Ole Miss football] program that had to vacate some wins. We still won the Sugar Bowl here at Ole Miss because everyone was there. We held up the trophy. And so those are the things that you go through. But yeah, it's definitely a different climate. The conversations are a lot different than they were before." (link)

The number of former N.C. State student-athletes accusing university officials of not protecting them from a trainer’s alleged sexual abuse and harassment on campus has grown to 14 men, according to a new lawsuit filed on Wednesday. The complaint also alleges that former Wolfpack AD Debbie Yow was aware of multiple complaints about the head trainer long before the trainer resigned. Kerry Sutton, the attorney representing the 14 individuals, says: “Athletes afraid of losing their scholarship or their spot on the team, trainers afraid of reporting their boss, coaches afraid of getting involved, directors afraid of harming NCSU’s reputation. [Former Director of Sports Medicine Robert] Murphy took advantage of those fears to get away with abusing what we believe may turn out to be hundreds of former Wolfpack athletes.” Attorney Seth Blum in a written statement asserts that after three years of representing Murphy, there hasn’t been “one scrap of credible evidence that he assaulted anyone,” adding: “He is a talented professional who has been targeted as an early victim in the new frontier of mass torts: suing universities for spurious allegations of sexual assault. Put simply, Robert Murphy did not do this.” A spokesperson for NC State said the university does not comment on pending litigation. More from The Charlotte Observer’s Virginia Bridges. (link)

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers provides more context on the $49M Smart v. NCAA settlement connected to back pay for volunteer baseball coaches who were part of coaching staffs from late-2019 to mid-2023. Rogers: “The overall settlement figure is $49.25 million. Of that total, $32.9 million is expected to go directly to former volunteer and unpaid coaches — the figure for the number of coaches receiving those funds is expected to be over 1,000. Of the remaining funds, $14.8 will go toward attorney fees, $1.4 million will go toward various costs and expenses related to the class-action settlement, $30,150 will go to the settlement administrator, $35,000 will go to an economist, $7,500 in incentives will be paid out, and $100,000 will go straight into a contingency fund. The amount that volunteer coaches around the country will receive is expected to vary, although the average funds received is expected to be around $36,000.” (link)

When Endeavor bought On Location from the NFL five years ago, the company essentially focused on selling Super Bowl experiences to corporate brands and high-net-worth individuals. Now run by TKO, On Location “has been upping the ante ever since in order to keep pace with fans’ willingness to pay exorbitant sums for Instagrammable experiences,” according to Puck’s John Ourand, who notes that [TKO President Mark Shapiro] said during this week’s IMG x RedBird Summit: “Imagine saying to Roger Goodell 10 years ago, or [Paul] Tagliabue 20 years before that, ‘Okay, now after the cheerleaders run out at the Super Bowl, but before the players, we’re going to have a golf cart come out onto the field – just a quick little dipsy doo, with 10 people drinking in concealed containers, and screaming, and yelling, and then they peel off to the sideline. And for that, they’re each going to pay $85K.’ I’m barely exaggerating. And with that is going to come the ticket, food, travel. Guess what? That’s happening now at the Super Bowl. It’s not just sitting on the 50-yard line, eating and drinking. You get to take a picture of the Super Bowl trophy, and go on the field after the game, where the winning players are onstage. Yes, that’s happening. It’s sitting right next to Dana White for three fights of a UFC fight card for $350K.” (link)
