Investment firm Sequence Equity was the group behind a pitch made to FCS commissioners about a privatized FCS Playoff this week, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who adds more, “According to the proposal, the new playoff would be run by a new private entity. FCS conferences would own the majority of the new entity, but Sequence Equity would take a minority stake and offer ‘tens of millions of dollars in investment,’ the source said. [...] It’s unclear when this entity could get up and running, as the concepts are still in the educational and discussion stages. But sending the proposal to the NCAA for discussion was described by the source as the next step.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with a SCORE Act update: “Over the last few days, the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten sent letters to Congress in support of the SCORE Act. The ACC is finalizing its own letter and intends to send it to lawmakers. Notable given the pushback from some conferences seeking changes to the legislation.” (link)

College Football Playoff decision makers are “comfortable” with remaining at the current 12-team format, per CBS Sports’ Jon Talty, who adds that CFP Executive Director Rich Clark mentioned playoff leaders only devoted about 20 minutes of Wednesday’s four-hour meeting to the topic despite a looming December 1st deadline for deciding next year’s format. Clark: “My sense is the room's comfortable with (staying at 12) if that's where we go and that's probably why they're not too pressed with rushing to a decision. If they can find time to have a discussion and make a decision, they want to have that opportunity. So if we end up staying at 12 we are talking about next year, so we have time to implement all the way up through (Dec. 1) and then we'll know what it is at that point.” Per Talty, Clark also acknowledged that much of the playoff discussion occurs in smaller groups away from the larger one, with the smaller groups of commissioners not having had much time to dig into specifics. Clark: “They've been dealing with so many other issues beyond football even that they just haven't had a lot of time to really lean into format. So they want to find that time...it's really a matter of them having time to do it, and they just haven't found that.” (link)

The Big Ten has “no immediate plans” to join the Big 12, SEC and ACC in requiring its schools to play a minimum of 10 Power 5 conference opponents, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy, who notes “with nothing on the Big Ten’s immediate horizon regarding playing the same number of power conference opponents as the other three leagues, don’t expect any resolution on the 2026 College Football Playoff format. … Expect the 2026 playoff to be the same 12-team model as in 2024 and 2025.” Per McMurphy, the “perplexing thing about the Big Ten not requiring its league members to play a 10th power conference game is that at this summer’s Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, league officials and coaches literally pounded their chests about playing the toughest conference schedule. For one reason: the Big Ten played nine league games, while ‘that other conference’ (the SEC) only played eight.” More. (link)

Facing chaos with as many as four different collectives all working to bring Penn State up to speed with the competition, The Athletic’s Ralph Russo writes that per Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft, the best way to get things operating efficiently enough to help football compete at the highest level was to join forces into a single collective, Happy Valley United. Kraft: “Just from a pure communication and efficiency standpoint, it didn’t make sense to have our base split.” Happy Valley United Director of Operations Rich Stankiewicz: “Penn State having a baseline of money that we can help [players not feel they’re sacrificing to stay at PSU] is great. We needed to get to a point where we had the baseline so it isn’t kids making a decision of money or no money. It’s no longer that decision. [...] There are egos involved. These are high-powered people involved in all of the groups: industry heads, high-profile former athletes, high-profile former coaches. The No. 1 thing for everyone is they care about Penn State. So many passionate opinions because they care about Penn State.” More. (link)

As part of its Candid Coaches series, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander polled roughly 100 Division I coaches on how much of their schools’ revenue sharing money they believe should go to Men’s Basketball. Of coaches at schools with FBS football programs, 56% believed that somewhere between 25-30% of their school’s rev share cap should go to the sport, while 35% thought somewhere between 15-20% and 9% answered somewhere between 30-40%. For coaches at non-FBS football program schools, 29% of coaches believed that somewhere between 90-95% of that money should go to their sport, while 27% answered somewhere between 70-80%. One coach at a school with an FBS football program remarked: “Twenty-percent minimum … I believe it's a matter of time before pretty much 100% of revenue-share will go to football and men's basketball. ADs just need cover. They want to put their money in the sports that actually generate revenue,” while a non-FBS football school coach added: “Putting myself in my AD's shoes, by not having football, I believe 70% of the rev-share should go to men's basketball. Our ability to make an NCAA tournament appearance would change the trajectory of [our] university enrollment.” More. (link)

The New York Post’s Zach Braziller reports Wagner Men’s Basketball HC Donald Copeland is currently serving a suspension while under investigation for the alleged mistreatment of players with accusations including the verbal abuse of several players and the refusal of water breaks during strenuous practices. According to the Post, “Copeland has not yet been found responsible of the allegations, but multiple complaints were sent to school administrators at the Staten Island-based college that sparked the investigation. Only two players returned from last year’s team, and sources said that was primarily the result of Copeland’s behavior.” Per Braziller, Copeland, Wagner’s Athletic Department and AD Walt Hameline didn’t respond to requests for comment on the matter. Former North Carolina Provost Chris Clemens argues in a lawsuit against the university that UNC and its board of trustees demonstrated a "systematic misuse of closed sessions to hide policy debates from public view.” Clemens alleges three instances related to the athletic department, with the biggest being the hire of Football HC Bill Belichick. According to the suit, Clemens claims the trustees called an "emergency meeting" on December 12 and illegally conducted a closed session to discuss and approve the hiring of Belichick. The board followed by affirming the hire and the contract terms. Clemens also accuses the board of holding a closed session in November 2023 to compare the finances of ACC membership with that of the Big Ten and SEC. From the complaint: “Each episode follows the same pattern: the Board invokes a statutory exemption, enters closed session, then discusses broad policy or budget matters that must be debated publicly. The Board compounds these violations by maintaining inadequate general accounts that prevent public understanding of what transpired." (link)

Fan interest in Wisconsin’s volleyball program is reaching historic new levels, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who notes that UW has the best average attendance in the country as of September 23 with 8,620 fans flocking to the Field House or Kohl Center per match. That is barely ahead of Nebraska’s 8,602 fans per match. No other program is averaging more than 6,000 fans per match. While the Badgers have enjoyed strong attendance over the years, Steppe points out that 8,620 fans per game in 2025 “even outpaces the program’s existing all-time attendance record of 7,761 fans per game in 2022 – the year following the Badgers’ national championship. Badgers Deputy AD/CRO Mitchell Pinta: “We’re really, really excited; we’re going to exceed $2M in volleyball ticket sales for the first time ever. And we’re largely sold out for the rest of our matches at the Field House for the remainder of the season.” To compare, UW brought in around $1.6M in ticket revenue in 2023, and Pinta notes the uptick is the result of the team’s success, but also “an increase in pricing, a creation of new, differentiated premium products — group sales on Bucky’s Balcony in the Field House, for example — and then it’s been the ability to have more matches at the Kohl Center,” which has a capacity of over 17K. Pinta adds: “If there’s a saturation point on the demand for Wisconsin volleyball, we certainly have not seen it yet. So we’re excited to continue to explore different ways to grow volleyball. We’ve talked a lot in the past obviously about playing in different places like Milwaukee and things like that. It’s all on the table. And I’m really excited to have a partner in Coach [Kelly] Sheffield who’s thinking the same way as myself and Mac (Badgers AD Chris McIntosh) on how we want to grow the sport.” (link)

The NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs have selected Playfly Sports to assist with selling sponsorships in Ireland and the United Kingdom, according to SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who notes the team “obtained commercial rights in those countries for the first time in May as part of the NFL’s global markets program. Those rights, which five other teams have in Ireland and eight other teams have in the U.K., mirror the rights to sell media and sponsorship deals all NFL teams enjoy in their natural home territories.” As part of the agreement, Playfly will “identify and structure” deals with prominent brands in the British Isles, and develop activations. Financial terms of the relationship were undisclosed. (link)

In a recent appearance on the Coach's Wife Life podcast with Kristen Eargle, D1.relocation COO Ernest Firth III detailed the immense logistical and emotional toll of moving on coaching families, describing it as a "full-blown life reset." He explained how D1.relocation, differs from, and offers much more than, a standard moving company by acting as a single point of advocacy to simplify the relocation process for coaches and administrators. Firth noted that D1.relocation was built by "an empathetic group of leaders" who intimately understand the unique challenges of a career in college athletics and are prepared to assist families regardless of their school or budget. NCAA President Charlie Baker helped kick off the 2026 Men’s Final Four festivities in Indianapolis, praising the city as a premier host: “I go into this fully believing that it will be unforgettable, because Indianapolis has always been a premier host and other cities, by the way, are working hard to catch up.” Meanwhile, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that expansion conversations are ongoing, as officials weigh several factors. Portnoy notes that “among issues for the NCAA to sort out are TV inventory and possible compensation from the addition of games. The NCAA’s deal with CBS/TNT, which runs through 2032, doesn’t stipulate the networks shell out any more money if the tournament were to expand to 72 or 76 teams.” Gavitt: “There’s a lot that goes into it because we have to figure out a way to pay for it. There are some things going back to [NCAA] convention that we’ve considered with our partners that would give them opportunities with our [Corporate Champions and Partners] Program that aren’t there now that could help be a deal that would make sense for all parties involved. Some of those discussions are still ongoing. Nothing is determined, by any stretch, but the whole evaluation is inclusive of all of that, because if you don’t have it all figured out – financially, logistically, operationally, marketing promotions – then it would lead you to an outcome that you wouldn’t do it.” (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg says former Football HC Mike Gundy will receive the full $15M buyout owed through 2028. Weiberg also declined to confirm whether he's signed a new contract himself but noted he will lead the search for Gundy’s replacement. Indiana AD Scott Dolson Q&As with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy and says the last 18 months have been difficult to quantify. “We see our numbers, our ticket sales, fundraising, the momentum behind that, but just the momentum behind the university. It’s not a cliché; you feel like we are the front door, and you feel that hopefully the impact on, whether it’s the School of Medicine or Kelley School of Business, or just where their jobs are a little easier, whether it’s raising money or getting interest and support in their programs, because people are feeling good about football. A rising tide raises all boats and that’s what we feel like football’s doing.” Asked how IU plans to capitalize on the football momentum, Dolson explains: “It’s part of our plan…to invest in football and have a vision for our program and to make certain…there’ll be a return on that. When you see that come to fruition, you feel the momentum that’s creating within our department, within the entire campus. It feels like you’re on the right path, and it makes you want to double down and keep working harder and keep adapting where we have to. But moving forward, we’re on the right path.” (link)

More from Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier on the Big Mountain podcast. In discussing changes to the industry and the role of an AD, Frazier explains the “practitioner role has changed a number of times. … Some folks are saying we’ll bring in a professional person from the NFL or NBA, and they’re going to run the financial entity. I think that’s dangerous. You still have to do the job – making sure student-athletes have a quality experience, you’re not compromising standards, and you’re managing multiple sports. Any of those sports can get you fired. Ignore one or two too long and you will find that out quickly.” That said, Frazier notes that “we have to adapt new skill sets and meld the old with the new to come up with the now. Transparency is really important. If you don’t engage folks in the decision, people think you’re hiding something. Just imagine if I didn’t go out of my way to explain why we made the decision to move conferences – people would say it was just for more media money. It wasn’t. It was a whole different piece.” (link)

One nugget not included in an earlier report about Massachusetts AD Ryan Bamford’s plans to revitalize the football program is the dollar amount attached. According to the Boston Globe’s Emma Healy, UMass will conduct a three-phase, $25M overhaul of McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The first phase will focus on the fan experience before the 2026 season. The second and third phases will be structural and aesthetic upgrades, to be completed by 2028. Bamford says the project will be funded through private investments and creative funding models via the university’s trustees. The Minutemen, he adds, do not plan to use general operating funds from the state, and the university will announce a full year-by-year improvement plan in December. (link)

Former Wisconsin Football HC/AD Barry Alvarez on Monday didn’t hold back after fans booed and chanted for Football HC Luke Fickell’s firing on Saturday: "I think it's embarrassing. I think it's terrible, despicable. They're spoiled rotten. Here's a team that you've got young players trying to come on, they're competing, they're going to have a chance to get better, and you flip on them. We're early in the season and you flip on them and you're chanting for the coach [to be fired]. … How do you think that makes the players feel? That's disrespectful, it's not loyal, you're not a fan. If the person sitting next to me is booing – 'Get your ass out of here. We don't need you in here. You don't want to watch this? Go someplace else. Go boo in a bar.' That really upsets me." (link); Alvarez later addressed his comments, telling Badger Extra’s Jim Polzin: “Well, I think more than anything else, I tend to overreact at times. I meant what I said, but I think the way I said it, I’m sure I overreacted. You’re there to support your team and your coach. They’ve got recruits there to help them in the future and you’re booing players. Every coach knows they’re going to be criticized, that’s part of their job. But man, I don’t like that for kids..” (link)

The Baseball Oversight Committee is “finally beginning to come together, though there are still some spots to fill,” according to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers, who shares his thoughts on the group as constituted: “Though Craig Keilitz of the ABCA will serve as the representative of the coaches, and rightfully so given his role, I’m disappointed not to see an actual coach on the committee. It doesn’t need to be an active coach. Still, when talking to sources over the summer, I highly suggested former Oregon State legendary head coach Pat Casey, who is still heavily involved with athletic affairs in Corvallis. Casey, among others, would be an excellent choice to serve as a liaison on the committee. Perhaps that’s something the NCAA and committee will revisit as the group continues to take shape.” Rogers adds: “One of the more critical questions you all are going to ask is about the NCAA Division I Baseball Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will essentially remain the same, with only the voting members having a say on the NCAA tournament field. [Florida State AD Michael] Alford will chair the selection process in 2026. And with his term on the Oversight Committee ending in late 2027, it will be Alford’s choice if he wants to lead the selections in 2027 as well. It’s expected that he will choose to do so.” (link)

➤ A former Cal Poly swimming student-athlete who lost her scholarship after the Mustangs eliminated the program has submitted a letter to Judge Claudia Wilken. Venable LLP Partner Philip Sheng: “The letter includes email correspondence with Jeffrey Kessler who says the House settlement's scholarship protections cover athletes who are cut due to roster limits – but not when the school cuts the entire program. Also interesting is Kessler's claim that Cal Poly is merely using the settlement as an excuse for cutting the team.” (link); Full letter. (link)
➤ Fresno State has agreed to a proposed settlement in a four-year-old Title IX class action alleging unequal treatment of the women’s lacrosse program, which was cut after the 2020–21 academic year. As part of the agreement, Fresno State will hire a neutral third-party to conduct a Title IX gender equity review and draft a compliance plan covering varsity opportunities, treatment, and benefits. Implementation begins September 1, 2026, and must be completed by the end of 2027–28. Additionally, annual progress reports will be posted on the athletics website through 2029, and Fresno State must add a new women’s varsity sport if participation gaps reach 40+ over two years, or 30+ over three years, unless the gap can be reduced by other means. The settlement includes no monetary relief for the class, but Plaintiffs’ attorneys will receive $900K in fees and costs. (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham explains why QB Devon Dampier was not listed on the injury report despite being limited in practice last week: “While he was limited in practice early in the week, his status of playing…was never in question. … We have spoken to the conference and have clarified guidelines moving forward.” According to Big 12 rules, “when an institution becomes aware that a student-athlete may be unable to participate in an upcoming game for any reason (including, but not limited to, injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, or personal matters), it is required to accurately indicate the student-athlete’s participation status” on the weekly report. Whittingham is hopeful Dampier’s injury will not be long-term but adds: “We never discuss injuries here, other than the injury report, so you know, we’ll just have to see how it goes. I think he’s in a better place – well, I know he’s in a better place right now – this Monday than he was last Monday. So that bodes well.” (link)

Ohio State will alter its routine for this weekend’s Big Ten opener at Washington, leaving two days before kickoff instead of one to better handle the three-hour time change, according to the Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman, who notes the Buckeyes will move Thursday practice earlier, fly to the West Coast, and hold their Friday walk-through in Seattle. The change comes after lessons OSU learned during last year’s College Football Playoff run, when the team traveled early for games in California, Texas and Georgia. Otherwise, Buckeyes HC Ryan Day says everything else will remain the same. He adds: “We’ve done a lot of studying on this. We talked to a lot of people in the NFL and other sports on how they travel multiple time zones. We felt like this is the best way. … We really looked at how we played in the playoff as an indicator. We always learn. We’re always trying to get better.” (link)

Chattanooga Football HC Rusty Wright, following the Mocs’ 52-24 loss to Tarleton State, said the Texans were the best FCS team UTC has played since James Madison in 2019 and added: “That's $700K we're playing tonight against my $35K. Chattanooga, if you're listening, if you want something like this, you better open up the pocketbook. That's the only way you're going to keep good players.” (link)

Major League Baseball will use the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) during the entire 2026 season. According to MLB, each team will get two challenges and can keep them if they're successful. Challenges can only be initiated by a pitcher, catcher, or batter, and the request must come right after the pitch. To signal a challenge, the pitcher, catcher, or batter will tap his hat or helmet to let the umpire know. No help from the dugout or other players on the field is allowed. In each extra inning, a team will be awarded a challenge if it has none remaining entering the inning. The ABS Challenge System will use cameras set up around the perimeter of the field to track the location of each pitch and a graphic on the scoreboard shows the result of the challenge. (link)
