New Utah State AD Cameron Walker is set to earn a $540K base salary as part of a five-year contract, according to CollegeAD, which reports Walker's contract starts on October 6, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2030. Walker’s salary is set to increase by 3% annually, and he can earn up to $50K in incentive pay. Additionally, he is eligible to receive a $25K retention bonus if he's still employed as AD on June 30, 2028. Should Utah State opt to terminate the contract without cause, the Aggies would owe Walker 75% of any remaining base pay due to him over the remainder of the term. The same buyout structure is in place should Walker choose to exit the agreement for convenience. (link)

The ACC is moving to a nine-game football schedule, and according to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, the new slate will be fully implemented in 2027 with 16 league teams playing a 9+1 model, and one playing an 8+2. Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We have been incredibly intentional throughout our discussions on ACC Football, including the future of our conference schedule. Today, the Athletic Directors of the 17 football-playing institutions overwhelmingly supported a regular season schedule that includes nine conference games and a minimum of 10 games each year against Power 4 opponents. This positions the ACC as one of only two leagues committed to having every team annually play a minimum of 10 games against Power 4 teams. There will be additional discussions and more details to be determined, but today's decision showcases the commitment and leadership of our ADs in balancing what is best for strengthening the conference and their respective programs. As specified in the Conference constitution, the model will be presented to the Faculty Athletics Representatives for formal adoption.” (link)

More from new USF AD Rob Higgins during his don’t-call-it-a-press-conference yesterday, who was asked whether the Bulls have their sights set on the ACC, SEC, Big Ten or Big 12 and responded: “No matter how many ways you ask me it, I’m not going to say an acronym for you, despite you wanting me to. There will be a time for this conversation, and it’s coming and we’ve prepared for it and we’re executing it.” Winning, he adds, starts at home: “Win the building, then win the campus, then win the community, then win the country. In that order. You can’t expect to win the hearts and minds of campus until we know we have our very own people 100% bought-in and obsessed with what we get a chance to do every day. … As you look at realignment and take a hard look in the mirror at this very moment, we currently check two to three of the four boxes needed. We have the academics and the television market. Our resources are improving and now our (onfield) performance is starting to trend in the right direction. We have a very small window here before the realignment discussions are likely to begin and it requires all gas and no brakes.” (link)

LMU AD Craig Pintens welcomes new Maryland AD Jim Smith to the inaugural episode of CRO.ticker’s new Margins of Victory podcast. Smith shares some ideas for revenue generation in this new era of college sports, including this about how the Terps will approach seating and ticketing: “One thing that you're seeing a lot more of in the pro world…that I think we can quickly transition into the collegiate space is kind of the stratification of the facilities and creating different products for different consumers. I think baseball's done that really well. I think the (Atlanta) Braves have done it exceptionally well. Stratification can be by row, it can be by seat, it can be by section, and I can say at Maryland, I'm not sure we've really looked at it that way. So, I think that there's real opportunity to show value while raising prices and driving more revenue. … It really starts with how many different products do you have to offer, right? And how do you squeeze the middle more out by creating better product offerings in that middle to where it is more appealing at a little higher price? And I just keep going back to the Braves because it's just where I came from. We just added a right field club, right? It's not really a club, but it's a semi-club, but we took middle inventory that was roughly…$30 ticket, created a different product out there, made it a $90 ticket, sold it on a season basis. And all of a sudden, we've squeezed the middle again, which then creates demand somewhere else in the ballpark. And I think that's how stratification can work to create demand in the middle.” Smith also posits that “I think dynamic pricing has been underutilized in college athletics and I think we can do a lot more of it. I think AI can definitely help. We talked a lot about AI, and it wasn't just because I knew the audience. The president is an engineer. He's very much into AI. We've been using some AI. So I'm a believer that that's a tool to help us grow. I think there's ways to deploy it that will help not just grow our fan base, but grow our revenue streams.” (link)

The inaugural edition of CRO.ticker hit inboxes earlier this morning. This new College.town property promises to deliver curated news, insight and analysis on topics directly related to the modern athletic department’s commercial success: revenue and sales strategy, marketing and brand innovation, sponsorship and media rights, the impact of technology on the fan experience and more. The first issue includes a look at how Broadway musicals are facing a financial crisis due to rising labor, material, rent, and vendor costs and average ticket prices that aren’t keeping pace; how the U.S. Open (tennis) has become a “victim of its own success;” Tylenol’s foray into sports sponsorship and more. Give it a read and feel free to tell us what you think! (link)

Rutgers AD Keli Zinn Q&As with the Daily Targum student newspaper and says her transition from Baton Rouge to New Brunswick has been “fast and furious.” Zinn also says of hiring Executive Deputy AD/CRO/COO Todd Knisley: "I have long considered him the best revenue generator I've seen, particularly in the world of corporate sponsorships. Once I recognized here that a real deficiency that existed for us was surrounding the corporate sponsorship side of things and our ability to work through that – not just for brand advancement, but for name, image and likeness opportunities for our student athletes – and what that type of revenue's going to mean in the new collegiate landscape, it was a no-brainer that he was the number one phone call for me to make and target in order to be here." Zinn calls the focus on revenue generation “immediate,” adding: "The other thing, and you'll start to see some more stuff in this space, is we're going to get really aggressive with name, image and likeness. You have to, and it came online very quickly within the world of college sports four years ago, and so, a number of people have been heavy in that space. We have some work to do in that area, but really pleased as to how quickly we've had some stuff come together, and everybody internally, externally and abroad will recognize that and see that here in the very near future." Alabama AD Greg Byrne tells WVTM he remains optimistic a post-House path to sustainability will become clear: "Hopefully, in this new world, what we'll see is the NIL deals that really weren't at market rate – you didn't see professional athletes get deals like these. Hopefully, those will be ones that we can try to get our arms around to where there's some regulation for the future." Byrne also notes that “we have two sports that turn a profit, 19 that don't, and then we have a thing called a scholarship. That's real dollars that we invest in our young people in our programs and all you saw out of the narrative, often out of the plaintiffs’ side and out of the unionization side, is well, unpaid labor. Well, for unpaid labor, we sure are investing a lot of money into the experiences of our young men and young women. Not saying we shouldn't evolve. We need to evolve. That’s important. But at the same time, too, if you're going to talk about it fairly and accurately, it's important to have balance on that conversation and I think that was often missing. … If you're on a full-ride scholarship, what we invest in you academically, athletically, socially, nutrition, medical, across the board average is $198K a kid annually. I'm proud of that. Again, it doesn't mean that you can't evolve at what you're doing, but at the same time too, I am concerned that some of the outside forces on this aren't going to stop until really the only thing that's left is you have a few sports because that's all you can afford." Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joins the Big Mountain podcast to discuss several topics, including the Huskies’ move to the Mountain West and how they’re handling the move logistically. “We have two different transition modes. We have a Mountain West transition team and then we have a Horizon transition team. … If you can imagine, now we’re going from the Midwest to Hawaii. We’re dealing with all of those logistical situations and really figuring what that looks like, and quite frankly, loading that into our operational budget for the next fiscal year.” On the transfer portal and a potential transfer fee, Frazier remarks: “Popular or unpopular, it’s just time. We’re talking about money transferring hands, we’re talking about raiding rosters, doing things that are unscrupulous. We’re trying to put guardrails up to keep the ecosystem of college athletics intact. That fee shouldn’t come from the student-athlete. That should come from the institution the student-athlete is transferring to. It’s almost like a developmental fee. It keeps the ecosystem going and gives you the chance to compete.” Full podcast. Netflix “set off a firestorm” last month when news leaked that the streamer was looking to pick up the rights to a Notre Dame–USC game despite Notre Dame being under contract with NBC and USC’s rights being held by Fox, CBS and NBC. Puck’s John Ourand reports that “both Netflix and USC considered ways to circumvent these arrangements, and homed in on the idea of scheduling the game at a neutral site, like Mexico City or Las Vegas. The traditional partners went berserk when they learned about the subterfuge – a flurry of phone calls, as one source described it. Big Ten officials almost immediately shut down the idea, and the conference made clear that USC was not allowed to sell media rights to individual, non-conference games on their own, regardless of where they are played.” Ourand notes that it “seems extraordinarily naive that the school thought it had the rights to get this kind of deal done. Perhaps more than anything, though, the saga underscored how Netflix envisions its sports strategy,” particularly as it relates to its plan to “eventize” live sports. (link)

While athletics can sometimes be a polarizing topic on college campuses, James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis asserts: “Here’s a truth we need to say out loud: On most campuses, athletics is not the budget-devouring behemoth it’s made out to be. In fact, it often represents just 1-5% of an institution’s total operating budget. Yet its impact, particularly in brand value, is disproportionately powerful. … Let’s start with basic math. Even at Division I programs where travel, facilities and coaching salaries run high, athletics typically comprises a sliver of the institution’s overall budget. But unlike academic departments, the athletics department tends to have the highest visibility – literally. Sports are the only campus program aired on national television, trending on social media and reported in local media. With that visibility comes scrutiny. But visibility is also value. Athletics serves as a brand amplifier for colleges and universities. It reaches audiences that traditional marketing can’t touch: prospective students who may have never visited campus, donors who feel a deeper emotional connection to a winning program, and alumni who reconnect through shared game-day experiences.” (link)

San Diego State Football student-athlete Tatuo Martinson has been granted a preliminary injunction to expand his eligibility beyond NCAA-mandated limits, per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes that “U.S. District Court Judge Richard Boulware sharply rebuked the NCAA’s five year-rule … as ‘likely an undue restraint on trade imposed by the NCAA’s monopsony power over the rapidly transforming labor market for competitive college football services.’” Boulware also “cited the growth of ‘the market for unrestricted NIL compensation’ and ‘even more significantly’ the fact that ‘NCAA members can now directly pay student-athletes for their services’ through the House settlement’s revenue-sharing feature. As Boulware sees it, the NCAA’s ability to distinguish college sports from pro sports ‘all changed’ once the House settlement went into effect on July 1. Direct pay to college athletes, Boulware surmised, undercuts the labeling of college athletes as ‘amateurs and not paid athletes, such as those in the NFL or NBA.’ The judge bluntly wrote that he ‘rejects the notion that the product that the NCAA is offering—competitive college athletic sports events—is unique because the athletes are unpaid amateurs. They are not. This is now a labor market with compensated workers.’” The NCAA can appeal the order to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. More. (link)

USF officially introduced new AD Rob Higgins on Monday. Higgins: “I’m beyond grateful to be on this stage today at this celebration. Notice I didn’t say press conference. We don’t do boring press conferences anymore. This is a celebration of appreciation, a celebration of Bull Pride and a celebration of USF’s rightful price among the hierarchy of team Tampa Bay. All of which signal a new era in USF Athletics and college athletics in general. … If you take one thing away from my comments today, it’s that there is no more patience for the word potential. One day we’ll be great. One day we’ll win national championships. … Screw one day and screw potential. … We are not America’s next great University. We are not rising and we damn sure don’t have potential. We are AAU. We’re in the largest media market in the state and we have arrived. … It’s critically important that everyone realizes that our time as Bulls is right now. We're going to put a premium on process and performance, and we’ll no longer tolerate using potential as an excuse or a crutch. The days of defining ourselves based off some immeasurable metric of potential are now over. The negativity that we’ve seen from time-to-time around our program is officially over as well. We have the resources, including revenue share, facilities and coaches to win right now in the American. … We’re going to be proactive, prepared and please know we have a very, very detailed plan.” More from Higgins. Wofford AD Scott Kull shares an update on the men’s basketball program after reports last week about player suspensions and the end of HC Dwight Perry’s tenure: “At the beginning of the fall semester, Wofford's compliance team became aware of potential NCAA violations and began an internal investigation. After the internal investigation, Wofford's compliance team self-reported a violation pertaining to housing, and the NCAA found another violation regarding impermissible benefits. Wofford's compliance team worked with the NCAA to remediate the situation so student-athletes could compete and prepare for the season. Wofford student-athletes and coaches are supportive of other teams, and, to correct misinformation widely broadcast across social media, no team – student-athletes or coaches – reported alleged violations to the NCAA. The Wofford men's basketball team is currently in compliance and looking forward to the 2025-26 season. Dwight Perry has resigned as head coach, and we appreciate his time at Wofford and wish him well in his future endeavors. … We regret any confusion or concern this situation has caused within our community. Terrier fans are passionate and protective, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve the Terrier family. Student-athlete wellbeing and the maintenance of a supportive, positive and compliant collegiate and athletics experience remains our priority.” (link)

Auburn Men’s Basketball HC Bruce Pearl is retiring, after leading the Tigers’ program since 2014, with AHC Steven Pearl being named as his father’s successor. Bruce Pearl: “Eleven years ago, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become the head basketball coach at Auburn, and it has been nothing short of amazing. With the Auburn Family’s unwavering support, we have built a program from the ground up and taken it to heights it had never reached before. Not only have we won championships, but we have built the best home-court advantage in college basketball, we’ve invested in this community and changed lives, and we’ve developed and graduated Auburn men. We built a program with the core tenants of faith, family and passion, and together, we made history. I hope we have made Auburn proud. I have been at this for almost 50 years and truthfully as hard as it is for me to say this, I have come to the realization that it’s time for me to step aside. Being the head coach at Auburn has been the privilege of my life.” Pearl will continue to assist the Tigers as an ambassador & Special Assistant to the AD. (link); Here’s the full video of Pearl’s farewell. Worth noting is Pearl again indicating a U.S. Senate run is not in his future. (link); Steven Pearl has inked a five-year deal to lead the program. The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors will hold a virtual meeting on September 30, during which members will consider a four-year athletics budget adjustment. If approved, the proposed total additional investment would be $229M over four years, which is intended to bridge funding to reach a sustainable financial position by FY29. From the university’s release: “University leaders believe the proposed amended budget, if approved, will position Virginia Tech to compete at the highest levels of the conference resulting in significant increase in media rights and conference revenue. This proposed investment would be a shared responsibility between the university and donors, involving a targeted fundraising effort seeking to raise $120M in new funding over four years. The proposal calls for limited increases in student fees in future years, consistent with state limitations. Virginia Tech currently maintains the lowest student fee of any public university in the Commonwealth. The proposed budget amendment before the board Sept. 30 will not impact current academic operations.” (link); Tech Sideline’s Andy Bitter breaks down the proposal further and reports the athletic department will receive $47.1M in increases in FY26 and more than $61M in FY27, FY28 and FY29. (link); VTScoop247’s Doug Bowman adds: “Another way to look at the $229.2M in incremental funding. 52.35% will be on donors/fans (philanthropy). 9.29% will be on students (student fee revenue). 21.07% will be from institutional support (the university). 17.28% will be on bridge funding (presumably the university).” (link)

As a result of $123M in fundraising success to date, including a single-year record $73M in cash donations for 2024, Washington announces an expansion of its Go BIG! for Washington five-year fundraising goal from $300M to $350M. UW AD Pat Chun: “The generosity of Husky Nation has already made history and is proof of what can be accomplished when we come together with a shared vision. Scholarship support and revenue sharing are the foundation for student-athlete success. But to compete at the highest level in the Big Ten, we must also invest in cutting-edge technology and world-class facilities. These resources will allow us to innovate, elevate performance, and create an environment where our student-athletes can succeed—not just on game day, but every day." (link)

ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus wants Pat McAfee to remain with the network beyond his current five-year, $85M-plus licensing deal, per The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch. Magnus: “I think his show is hitting on all cylinders. … He’s an incredible interviewer and conversationalist. There is a validation for athletes and executives to be on his show. Every commissioner wants to be on his show. Every athlete wants to be on the show. There’s a cool factor, a relevance factor. It’s fun and funny and entertaining. As we sit here today, I could not imagine our daytime schedule without his show.” According to Deitsch, the two years left on McAfee’s College GameDay contract are separate from a licensing agreement for his daily talk show. Magnus: “We navigated through what a few years ago would have been described as really perhaps the biggest transformation or change to College Game Day that you could possibly imagine, meaning Lee Corso’s retirement. I feel like the show, from a content perspective and a cast-contributor perspective, is as good as it’s ever been, and Pat is an enormous reason for that. [...] Pat’s field goal-kicking contest is now must-see television. … Pat’s opening monologue and then his personal pick at the end of the show has become fun and compelling. Long story short, both his show and his work on GameDay, I’ll take that in as far into the future as you want to go.” (link)
