The Las Cruces Sun-News’ Nick Coppola reports New Mexico State Acting AD Amber Burdge is no longer being considered for the permanent AD position. Entitled to her former roles through a provision in her Acting AD contract, Burdge wishes to return as Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives and Leadership/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator upon the hiring of a new AD. Burdge: “It's disappointing, because anytime that you get into an opportunity like this, you get really invested and you really want to see the institution do well. It's disappointing for me, but it's also exciting for the institution. I want New Mexico State to do well, and I will help the next AD transition. I'll be here to help them transition into the role and support them in this role.” NMSU Chief of Staff/AD search committee chair Justin Bannister declined to name the AD finalists. (link)

What can new Rutgers President William Tate do to make an impact on the University? Tate: “Normalize winning! It’s normal and okay to win. Be comfortable in it. Don’t gloat. It’s normal. We expect it because we have goals, we have strategy, we have tactics and we’re measuring our progress. I don’t think that’s normal here. I don’t sense that at all. I think it’s normal for (Football HC Greg Schiano). But I don’t think it’s normal for the organization. So what’s my goal? Set the aim, shape the strategy, watch people and hold them accountable.” Tate also talks about fundraising: “I raise money in everything I do. We raised more money than anyone in LSU history when I was president. We raised money for athletics, we raised money for research, we raised money for capital projects. We’re going to do the same thing in this environment. … I’m very confident we will, and it will not be any sacrifice at all to our academic and research enterprise. They will go together. [...] You just have to have a consistent product on the field. That’s what this is really about. So how do you get there? You have to stack up the corporate partners. It’s really that simple. It’s not even complicated anymore. You count those partnerships and you count the wins. It’s almost a one-to-one correlation.” More. (link)

Baylor AD Mack Rhoades and Deputy AD/COO Jovan Overshown join the JohnWallStreet podcast to discuss several issues impacting college sports, and Rhoades confirms that donor fatigue is real, explaining: “Pay-for-play has taken its toll when you think about just donors in general. And I think the difference between public and private and maybe specifically, you know, us versus Arizona and some of the other public institutions [and] state institutions in the Big 12 is volume of people. We have less volume of donors. Our undergrad population is about 14,500, and so, we've got to be really strategic when we think about reach and engagement with donors.” The Bears raised ticket prices this year, and Rhoades explains that “we hadn't increased prices for football in three years, so this was a good time for us to do that. … You saw some other strategies about fees – NIL fee, House fee, those talent fees – we introduced it as a straight ticket price. And I think Jovan and her team did an incredible job of just being really transparent with our fan base, really connecting. ‘Hey, there's a reason behind this, the expense that comes along with House settlement.’ … On average, it was $100 [increase this year]. Obviously, that was scaled across the different [sports and] ticket categories that we have. But transparency [is what] allows [us] to do that. We were more aggressive than we’ve been in the past [with pricing].” Full podcast. (link)

Massachusetts AD Ryan Bamford met with media members on Monday and discussed his plan to revitalize the football program. The plan features three factors, with the first being the athletic department’s “physical plan,” which includes a three-phase approach that the department is preparing to release in December that will feature “a complete overhaul of our stadium.” The second focal point is the “staffing resources within the program,” which Bamford said he’s pleased with at this point. The third area is “roster management,” more specifically, focusing on retaining talent rather than acquiring players through the portal. Bamford said the department is prepared to increase its spending to speed up UMass’ timeline for success. “Candidly, we’re going to have to over-invest to win. We’ve had sort of deferred maintenance of this program for more than a decade and you have to invest more than maybe some others do to get out of it. The only way out is up. We’re focused on making sure we’re putting key investments in the right places and I think those are three — staffing, physical plan, and what we can do from an aid, additional benefits and NIL standpoint — those are absolutely paramount to our success. … We’re going into overdrive. We have to pull this program out of losing and it’s going to take a lot to do it. We recognize that and it’s been 12-plus years of mediocrity-to-little success at times here in the most recent future. Again, we’re going to have to over-subscribe and over-invest to get ourselves out of it.” (link)

Learfield CEO Cole Gahagan tells the Associated Press’ Eric Olson that Power 4 schools could combine to tap into hundreds of millions of dollars of new revenue if/when the NCAA approves jersey patches, something Gahagan predicts could occur within months, adding: “There’s no reason why college should sit behind [professional] leagues with that opportunity.” Nebraska AD Troy Dannen agrees and says: “It’ll come, and it should come. As part of the NCAA modernizing its rules, it’s overdue." One potential obstacle could be the exclusivity clauses schools have with apparel sponsors; however, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt doesn’t foresee that being a roadblock for the Red Raiders. “I've found that Adidas in everything we’ve had conversations about — jersey patches included — has been open minded and reasonable and willing to consider any opportunity that’s going to advance Texas Tech athletics.” Dannen goes on to note that jersey patches would be considered new inventory that would need assessment. He adds that it might be a better deal financially for schools to go in as a group and have their conference negotiate a jersey patch deal similar to league TV contracts. “If you jump in now, and I’m going to get a little bit [of money] because of the jersey patches. I would really like to see if there’s an opportunity for our conference to put all those jersey patch rights together and all of a sudden they’re worth a whole lot more to the institutions when 18 are playing instead of just one." Oklahoma State has officially parted ways with Football HC Mike Gundy after more than 20 seasons leading the Cowboys. OSU AD Chad Weiberg: “Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership. I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football. College football has changed drastically in the last few years, and the investment needed to compete at the highest level has never been more important." (link)

Former Super Bowl-winning NFL Head Coach/Virginia Tech Football alumnus Bruce Arians joined The Pat McAfee Show today to discuss the Hokies HC search, remarking: “It’s all business now. You’ve got to find a business man. I think the first thing for Virginia Tech is we’re going to hire a General Manager, and get him in charge of football. Then, we’ll get into the coaching search. We’re just in the ground stages now. The University is making a huge financial commitment so that we can compete in the ACC like we should be. I want to see Virginia Tech back, when [Metallica’s Enter] Sandman’s blasting and we’re winning games.” On VT’s potential athletic funding adjustments, Arians observed: “It’s probably about $50M into the athletic department for all sports, and that’s what you’re gonna have to have in the NIL business now. I mean, you recruit a guy this year, you’ve got to recruit him back next year, and all they want to know is how much money am I gonna make. It’s changed, and you’ve got to get people now that are in tune with the new business.” (link)

The NCAA has ruled former G League Ignite player Thierry Darlan eligible to play at Santa Clara, per ESPN’s Jeremy Woo, who notes that Darlan is the first player to obtain NCAA eligibility after playing professionally in the G League, where he spent the past two seasons. Darlan, who hails from the Central African Republic and was a graduate of the NBA Academy Africa program before playing the 2023-24 season with Ignite, will enter college as a junior with two remaining years of eligibility. After declaring for and withdrawing from the 2025 NBA Draft, Darlan maintains the ability to declare again in 2026. (link)

The Pac-12 is unlikely to add a football-only member for the 2026 season, according to JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous proprietor, who adds: “Still, the conference is plotting. The new-world Pac-12 currently includes eight football-playing members. A league source confirmed on Tuesday that Pac-12 teams expect to play seven conference games and five non-conference games in 2026. The Pac-12 is exploring a scheduling arrangement with one or more Group of 5 conferences to open dates and add additional non-conference games.” (link)

The ACC has topped the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” rankings for the 19th straight year. Overall, the league managed the best average ranking among all FBS conferences with a 50.7 average and was the only conference with multiple universities rated in the nation’s top 10, Stanford (#4) and Duke (#7). In addition, four ACC schools landed in the top 25 and six were ranked in the top 30 to lead all FBS conferences, while 11 of the 18 institutions either maintained or improved their position from last year’s rankings. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “Maintaining the strong academic foundation of intercollegiate athletics is a significant point of differentiation for the ACC as it’s essential to the long-term success and well-being of our student-athletes. We are proud that ACC institutions collectively uphold this national standard of academic and athletic achievement.” (link)

New Utah State AD Cameron Walker is set to earn a $540K base salary as part of a five-year contract, according to CollegeAD, which reports Walker's contract starts on October 6, 2025, and runs through June 30, 2030. Walker’s salary is set to increase by 3% annually, and he can earn up to $50K in incentive pay. Additionally, he is eligible to receive a $25K retention bonus if he's still employed as AD on June 30, 2028. Should Utah State opt to terminate the contract without cause, the Aggies would owe Walker 75% of any remaining base pay due to him over the remainder of the term. The same buyout structure is in place should Walker choose to exit the agreement for convenience. (link)

The ACC is moving to a nine-game football schedule, and according to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, the new slate will be fully implemented in 2027 with 16 league teams playing a 9+1 model, and one playing an 8+2. Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We have been incredibly intentional throughout our discussions on ACC Football, including the future of our conference schedule. Today, the Athletic Directors of the 17 football-playing institutions overwhelmingly supported a regular season schedule that includes nine conference games and a minimum of 10 games each year against Power 4 opponents. This positions the ACC as one of only two leagues committed to having every team annually play a minimum of 10 games against Power 4 teams. There will be additional discussions and more details to be determined, but today's decision showcases the commitment and leadership of our ADs in balancing what is best for strengthening the conference and their respective programs. As specified in the Conference constitution, the model will be presented to the Faculty Athletics Representatives for formal adoption.” (link)

More from new USF AD Rob Higgins during his don’t-call-it-a-press-conference yesterday, who was asked whether the Bulls have their sights set on the ACC, SEC, Big Ten or Big 12 and responded: “No matter how many ways you ask me it, I’m not going to say an acronym for you, despite you wanting me to. There will be a time for this conversation, and it’s coming and we’ve prepared for it and we’re executing it.” Winning, he adds, starts at home: “Win the building, then win the campus, then win the community, then win the country. In that order. You can’t expect to win the hearts and minds of campus until we know we have our very own people 100% bought-in and obsessed with what we get a chance to do every day. … As you look at realignment and take a hard look in the mirror at this very moment, we currently check two to three of the four boxes needed. We have the academics and the television market. Our resources are improving and now our (onfield) performance is starting to trend in the right direction. We have a very small window here before the realignment discussions are likely to begin and it requires all gas and no brakes.” (link)

LMU AD Craig Pintens welcomes new Maryland AD Jim Smith to the inaugural episode of CRO.ticker’s new Margins of Victory podcast. Smith shares some ideas for revenue generation in this new era of college sports, including this about how the Terps will approach seating and ticketing: “One thing that you're seeing a lot more of in the pro world…that I think we can quickly transition into the collegiate space is kind of the stratification of the facilities and creating different products for different consumers. I think baseball's done that really well. I think the (Atlanta) Braves have done it exceptionally well. Stratification can be by row, it can be by seat, it can be by section, and I can say at Maryland, I'm not sure we've really looked at it that way. So, I think that there's real opportunity to show value while raising prices and driving more revenue. … It really starts with how many different products do you have to offer, right? And how do you squeeze the middle more out by creating better product offerings in that middle to where it is more appealing at a little higher price? And I just keep going back to the Braves because it's just where I came from. We just added a right field club, right? It's not really a club, but it's a semi-club, but we took middle inventory that was roughly…$30 ticket, created a different product out there, made it a $90 ticket, sold it on a season basis. And all of a sudden, we've squeezed the middle again, which then creates demand somewhere else in the ballpark. And I think that's how stratification can work to create demand in the middle.” Smith also posits that “I think dynamic pricing has been underutilized in college athletics and I think we can do a lot more of it. I think AI can definitely help. We talked a lot about AI, and it wasn't just because I knew the audience. The president is an engineer. He's very much into AI. We've been using some AI. So I'm a believer that that's a tool to help us grow. I think there's ways to deploy it that will help not just grow our fan base, but grow our revenue streams.” (link)

The inaugural edition of CRO.ticker hit inboxes earlier this morning. The first issue includes a look at how Broadway musicals are facing a financial crisis due to rising labor, material, rent, and vendor costs and average ticket prices that aren’t keeping pace; how the U.S. Open (tennis) has become a “victim of its own success;” Tylenol’s foray into sports sponsorship and more. Rutgers AD Keli Zinn Q&As with the Daily Targum student newspaper and says her transition from Baton Rouge to New Brunswick has been “fast and furious.” Zinn also says of hiring Executive Deputy AD/CRO/COO Todd Knisley: "I have long considered him the best revenue generator I've seen, particularly in the world of corporate sponsorships. Once I recognized here that a real deficiency that existed for us was surrounding the corporate sponsorship side of things and our ability to work through that – not just for brand advancement, but for name, image and likeness opportunities for our student athletes – and what that type of revenue's going to mean in the new collegiate landscape, it was a no-brainer that he was the number one phone call for me to make and target in order to be here." Zinn calls the focus on revenue generation “immediate,” adding: "The other thing, and you'll start to see some more stuff in this space, is we're going to get really aggressive with name, image and likeness. You have to, and it came online very quickly within the world of college sports four years ago, and so, a number of people have been heavy in that space. We have some work to do in that area, but really pleased as to how quickly we've had some stuff come together, and everybody internally, externally and abroad will recognize that and see that here in the very near future." Alabama AD Greg Byrne tells WVTM he remains optimistic a post-House path to sustainability will become clear: "Hopefully, in this new world, what we'll see is the NIL deals that really weren't at market rate – you didn't see professional athletes get deals like these. Hopefully, those will be ones that we can try to get our arms around to where there's some regulation for the future." Byrne also notes that “we have two sports that turn a profit, 19 that don't, and then we have a thing called a scholarship. That's real dollars that we invest in our young people in our programs and all you saw out of the narrative, often out of the plaintiffs’ side and out of the unionization side, is well, unpaid labor. Well, for unpaid labor, we sure are investing a lot of money into the experiences of our young men and young women. Not saying we shouldn't evolve. We need to evolve. That’s important. But at the same time, too, if you're going to talk about it fairly and accurately, it's important to have balance on that conversation and I think that was often missing. … If you're on a full-ride scholarship, what we invest in you academically, athletically, socially, nutrition, medical, across the board average is $198K a kid annually. I'm proud of that. Again, it doesn't mean that you can't evolve at what you're doing, but at the same time too, I am concerned that some of the outside forces on this aren't going to stop until really the only thing that's left is you have a few sports because that's all you can afford." (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joins the Big Mountain podcast to discuss several topics, including the Huskies’ move to the Mountain West and how they’re handling the move logistically. “We have two different transition modes. We have a Mountain West transition team and then we have a Horizon transition team. … If you can imagine, now we’re going from the Midwest to Hawaii. We’re dealing with all of those logistical situations and really figuring what that looks like, and quite frankly, loading that into our operational budget for the next fiscal year.” On the transfer portal and a potential transfer fee, Frazier remarks: “Popular or unpopular, it’s just time. We’re talking about money transferring hands, we’re talking about raiding rosters, doing things that are unscrupulous. We’re trying to put guardrails up to keep the ecosystem of college athletics intact. That fee shouldn’t come from the student-athlete. That should come from the institution the student-athlete is transferring to. It’s almost like a developmental fee. It keeps the ecosystem going and gives you the chance to compete.” Full podcast. Netflix “set off a firestorm” last month when news leaked that the streamer was looking to pick up the rights to a Notre Dame–USC game despite Notre Dame being under contract with NBC and USC’s rights being held by Fox, CBS and NBC. Puck’s John Ourand reports that “both Netflix and USC considered ways to circumvent these arrangements, and homed in on the idea of scheduling the game at a neutral site, like Mexico City or Las Vegas. The traditional partners went berserk when they learned about the subterfuge – a flurry of phone calls, as one source described it. Big Ten officials almost immediately shut down the idea, and the conference made clear that USC was not allowed to sell media rights to individual, non-conference games on their own, regardless of where they are played.” Ourand notes that it “seems extraordinarily naive that the school thought it had the rights to get this kind of deal done. Perhaps more than anything, though, the saga underscored how Netflix envisions its sports strategy,” particularly as it relates to its plan to “eventize” live sports. (link)

While athletics can sometimes be a polarizing topic on college campuses, James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis asserts: “Here’s a truth we need to say out loud: On most campuses, athletics is not the budget-devouring behemoth it’s made out to be. In fact, it often represents just 1-5% of an institution’s total operating budget. Yet its impact, particularly in brand value, is disproportionately powerful. … Let’s start with basic math. Even at Division I programs where travel, facilities and coaching salaries run high, athletics typically comprises a sliver of the institution’s overall budget. But unlike academic departments, the athletics department tends to have the highest visibility – literally. Sports are the only campus program aired on national television, trending on social media and reported in local media. With that visibility comes scrutiny. But visibility is also value. Athletics serves as a brand amplifier for colleges and universities. It reaches audiences that traditional marketing can’t touch: prospective students who may have never visited campus, donors who feel a deeper emotional connection to a winning program, and alumni who reconnect through shared game-day experiences.” (link)

San Diego State Football student-athlete Tatuo Martinson has been granted a preliminary injunction to expand his eligibility beyond NCAA-mandated limits, per Sportico’s Michael McCann, who notes that “U.S. District Court Judge Richard Boulware sharply rebuked the NCAA’s five year-rule … as ‘likely an undue restraint on trade imposed by the NCAA’s monopsony power over the rapidly transforming labor market for competitive college football services.’” Boulware also “cited the growth of ‘the market for unrestricted NIL compensation’ and ‘even more significantly’ the fact that ‘NCAA members can now directly pay student-athletes for their services’ through the House settlement’s revenue-sharing feature. As Boulware sees it, the NCAA’s ability to distinguish college sports from pro sports ‘all changed’ once the House settlement went into effect on July 1. Direct pay to college athletes, Boulware surmised, undercuts the labeling of college athletes as ‘amateurs and not paid athletes, such as those in the NFL or NBA.’ The judge bluntly wrote that he ‘rejects the notion that the product that the NCAA is offering—competitive college athletic sports events—is unique because the athletes are unpaid amateurs. They are not. This is now a labor market with compensated workers.’” The NCAA can appeal the order to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. More. (link)
