Grinnell selects Cal Lutheran AD Roepke as its new AD, starting July 1. Knox names former Muhlenberg AD Goff as its new AD. President McGadney: “Corey is the right leader at the right time for our athletics program here at Knox. Concordia (TX) AD Seagraves says the Tornados’ move from the ASC to the SCAC “had nothing to do” with the ASC’s ongoing commissioner search, adding: “This happened really, really quick. In fact, the search for the commissioner started before this ever came into play, so it didn't really have anything to do with that piece of that. With the SCAC, Southwestern and Trinity are leaving that conference to go to another conference, which opened the door for them to invite a couple other members in and they still want to grow a little bit. So for us, it was going to a conference that was growing and was going to have all the AQs and everything in place for the sports that we sponsor.” Come 2025-26, when Southwestern and Trinity exit for the SAA, CTX will likely be travel partners with McMurry. MIAC leaders weigh in on the state of the conference, now multiple years removed from St. Thomas (MN)’s (DI) departure. St. Olaf AD Bowles: “Looking at the standings and the competition, there’s certainly a lot more parity. [...] St. Thomas was such a strong program and had built up a powerhouse in many of these sports that it felt like most of us were significantly underdogs. It’s changed.” Macalester AD Brooks: “Winning and competitiveness matter. Too much losing isn’t good for the psyche of the athletes themselves, the student body, alumni or the institution. Greater athletics success at Mac led to larger crowds at games and a boost in athletics fundraising.” On the downside, league strength of schedule has taken a hit, making it harder to earn additional NCAA berths. Bowles: “We want to make sure we’re putting ourselves in a position to be able to have multiple bids because I think our teams – as evidenced by Gustavus women’s hockey – can compete on the national stage and do some really great things.” All in all, per Commissioner McKane, “The MIAC is in a really good place currently.” (link)

Sportico’s McCann posits that federal legislation aimed at addressing the myriad issues facing college sports “face several hurdles that might prove insurmountable. For starters, nothing is stopping the NCAA and its members from adopting new rules and enforcement mechanisms to regulate NIL, employment, collectives, agents and related topics. Stated differently, Congress isn’t needed to accomplish what the NCAA wants. … The NCAA and its members are worried about antitrust scrutiny of rules that limit economic opportunities for college athletes. But what the NCAA regards as a worry, others regard as a relief. Antitrust law is designed to ensure that competing businesses, including colleges, compete. But some restrictions on competition might prove reasonable before a court.” Further: “More flexible NCAA restrictions would likely satisfy antitrust scrutiny; most antitrust lawsuits fail because courts are usually deferential to restrictions so long as they are not blanket prohibitions. If the NCAA is unwilling to defend new restrictions from antitrust scrutiny, it invites questions about the lawfulness of those restrictions. … The NCAA is no longer in control of college athlete compensation. It will soon discover Congress isn’t in control, either.” More from McCann. (link)

Alabama Governor Ivey yesterday signed a bill that will ban transgender women from playing on female sports teams in college. Previous legislation prohibited such participation in K-12 schools and leagues. Ivey: “Look, if you are a biological male, you are not going to be competing in women's and girls' sports in Alabama. It's about fairness, plain and simple.” (link)

The college enrollment rate for recent U.S. high-school graduates aged 16 to 24 declined to 62% last year from 66.2% in 2019, according to the latest Labor Department data, which also shows the rate topped out at 70.1% in 2009. The Wall Street Journal’s Torry notes high-school graduates are being “diverted from college campuses by brighter prospects for blue-collar jobs in a historically strong labor market for less-educated workers. Job growth at restaurants, theme parks and other parts of the leisure and hospitality sector…has increased more than twice as fast as job gains overall in the past year. There also remains a high number of job openings in construction, manufacturing and warehousing, fields that often require additional training, but not college degrees.” Overall, federal data indicates college enrollment has fallen by about 15% in the last decade.
