Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman sat down with SBJ’s Abe Madkour at this week’s Game Changers Conference and said: “I hope with everything that’s going on in our country, that we as an industry don’t take our eye off the importance of diversification in the leadership ranks of our business. We look at this room, my heart is soaring. As somebody who came up almost 40 years ago when there weren’t many women in leadership positions – there weren’t many people of color, men or women – and I look around now, and I see the progress that has been made over the last three or four decades. I don’t want to see us as an industry go backward. ... We’ve got a lot of freedom fighters out there who are keeping their foot on the pedal as we look to make sure that the leader ranks of sports match up with our athlete populations. ... I hope we can just keep doing it because that’s the most important thing to me at this stage of my career.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde opines about the Big Ten apparently softening its stance on the College Football Playoff format, writing: “...some folks in the Big Ten may actually be warming to the concept of treating all Power 4 conferences with a measure of equality when it comes to playoff access. Not full equality, of course—the Big Ten and SEC still have the highest share of revenue and the most control over format—but something closer to it. Something like four bids apiece for all four power leagues, as part of a 24- or 28-team playoff. Forced humility. It’s a heck of a thing.” One power conference AD tells Forde: “Maybe [Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti] is realizing you need friends in this industry. Hard to do anything on your own.” Forde goes on to suggest that “one way to bring everyone to the table is to offer more access to more people. The Big 12 and the ACC athletic director spots aren’t filled with naive hayseeds who think the Big Ten suddenly respects them more and thus wants to double their number of automatic bids; they know what this is about. In a word, bribery. But who knows, maybe leagues that are at a disadvantage can be bought if the price is right. And this is a pretty juicy price. The Big Ten finally read the room and concluded that sharing the sugar might be its best hope.” (link)

A task force from the Congressional Black Caucus is in negotiations with its Republican colleagues to amend portions of the SCORE Act, some of which have already been agreed to, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL), a member of the caucus, revealed that the group has reached an agreement on several changes to the legislation, adding that while “no piece of legislation is perfect, we know that something has to be done.” However, “it’s important that all views are taken into account when you’re talking about legislation that has an impact on such a big swath of peoples’ lives.” Specifically, Sewell says GOP members have agreed to changes with two of the caucus’ four areas of concern, including extending the bill’s medical provision that would require schools to provide five years of post-graduate healthcare rather than three and increasing athlete representation on NCAA governance committees from 25% to 35%. Dellenger: “The CBC and Republicans remain in negotiations, Sewell suggested, over the caucus’ desire to change the Act’s overseeing and enforcement entity from state attorneys generals to the Federal Trade Commission. Attorneys general enforcing the act is ‘problematic,’ she said, implying that their in-state bias serves as a conflict of interest.” (link)

Sacramento State President Luke Wood weighs in on a proposal to privatize the FCS Playoffs: “I’m a fan of Sequence (Equity), not necessarily PE in general, but of Sequence for sure. Reasonable. Visionary. Faith based. POC. Even though we won’t be around FCS long enough to benefit from this opportunity, FCS will benefit greatly.” (link)

What’s a Chief AI Officer? This morning’s CRO.ticker has insights on that question from Washington Post Chief AI Officer Sam Han, including this nugget: “The best benefit of having that is no more meetings to decide what rules [to set as the basis for the paywall]. Thanksgiving sale’s coming up, how should we change the paywall rules to accommodate more subscriptions during the sales price? We will have meetings after meetings after meetings, and then the executive with the largest voice will win, right? That’s all gone now. It’s all driven by machine learning.” There’s also key insights on Ryder Cup economics, Major League Baseball end-of-season attendance & revenue data, plus lots more. (link)

The Arizona Board of Regents has approved a $50M facilities project to address deferred maintenance and infrastructure upgrades at Arizona Stadium and McKale Center. Kentucky has emailed surveys to fans about potential enhancements to Kroger Field and the proposed entertainment district outside of the stadium. Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart last month announced $36M in upgrades to Kroger Field, $15M of which will go toward general renovations, $13M for new corner suites and upgraded elevator access, and $8M for upgrades to the existing premium club space and a better Wi-Fi system. The feedback from the survey will help the Cats determine the best way to spend that money and what fans want in the new entertainment district along with the new men’s basketball practice facility. Potential premium areas include a pregame beer garden just outside the main stadium walls, a patio club inside the stadium, modern chairback seats, terrace seating and more. (link)

The NFL is preparing to renegotiate its media rights as early as 2026, years before contracts technically open in 2030, and Puck’s John Ourand observes: “Compared to the NBA’s recent $76B, 11-year arrangement, the NFL’s $110B worth of deals over 11 years seems like it was signed during the Stone Age rather than 2021. NFL executives certainly took notice that some of the league’s partners had shelled out more for NBA rights than they did for the NFL. NBC, for instance, pays the NBA $2.5B per year versus about $2B for the NFL. Amazon, which pays the NFL about $1B per year for the rights to broadcast Thursday Night Football, will now be forking over $2.8B to Adam Silver. ESPN, for its part, pays the NFL $2.7B and the NBA $2.6B.” Meanwhile, Guggenheim Securities’ Michael Morris indicated in a report this week that “the most recent NBA rights agreement has a rights cost per viewer hour of nearly 3x the current NFL average annual value (even before the incremental ratings strength this season). Our initial estimate sees an aggregate annual rights value of ~$18B versus the current ~$10B, with the addition of two new packages. … While a sizable step up, the implied cost per viewer hour would remain attractive for distribution partners in comparison to other rights.” Given that info, Ourand submits that “these negotiations could turn into a true existential event for some legacy media companies. After all, they can’t actually be in the broadcast business if they aren’t in business with the NFL.” (link)

South Carolina’s game-day fireworks at Williams-Brice Stadium average around $15K per game and are executed by a seven-person Pyro Shows crew led by on-site manager Russ Ellis, according to The State’s Jackson Castellano, who notes the Gamecocks’ pyrotechnics arsenal includes 600 pieces per game. Ellis notes that “touchdowns and scores are always predetermined and set at the beginning of the season to always have a particular look, and that will be the way South Carolina looks, with the correct colors and the types of devices.” He adds: “We always come with 10 touchdowns that we go in ahead and get loaded. We always bring an additional five touchdowns that we have with us if they have an unbelievably high-scoring game.” Looking ahead, the $350M renovations in store for Williams-Brice should expand options, and South Carolina and Pyro Shows are eyeing new firing positions – especially atop the planned south-end videoboards – to launch from both sides of the stadium without changing safety clearances. Cal Poly hires Stanford Deputy AD for External Relations Carter Henderson as its next AD. President Jeffrey D. Armstrong: “As we searched for a new athletic director to carry our momentum forward, it became clear that Carter's background and experience would be a tremendous benefit to the university. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds context to reports of the potential privatization of the FCS Playoffs via an investment from Sequence Equity: “For one, according to NCAA Rule 31.2.1.1, all NCAA members are required to participate, if selected, in the NCAA championship or in no postseason at all. The decision to eliminate the FCS playoff would require approval from its sport-specific committee, the FCS Oversight, followed by approval from the new NCAA Administrative Committee, and then, after that, the Division I Board of Directors. However, there is another hurdle: moving the FCS playoffs out from under the NCAA umbrella may come with consequences, as it may impact the NCAA’s $115 million media rights package with ESPN — a deal that incorporates 40 other sport championships. What happens now? It remains to be seen, but FCS officials are expected to continue talks over the coming weeks with the earliest implementation date of 2027. (link)

Athletic Admin’s KC Smurthwaite includes this nugget from a sitting AD in a piece on the FCS Playoffs topic for HERO Sports: “We lose money. It’s a great product and tremendously undervalued. Surely there has to be another way.” Another unnamed AD: “People realize we are being operated like the track and field championships, right? Same per diem, same setup. We are lumped in with everything else they do, and that’s not right.” (link)
|
Dellenger with more as he reports “DI commissioners this week in Chicago received an update on the long-discussed concept of permitting schools to outfit player jerseys with sponsorship patches. The legislation is expected to be approved in time for patches to be added to uniforms as soon as next fall. There is disagreement, however, on who should set & control standards related to jersey patches - schools, conferences or the national association. Most involved feel strongly in restricting the number of patches as to avoid overexposure (ie NASCAR).” (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond announces the five-member search committee to assist him in the search for the Bruins’ next Football HC. The quintet includes: Wasserman Founder/CEO Casey Wasserman, ESPN Basketball Analyst/Washington Commanders (NFL) Advisor Bob Myers, 10-year NFL pro Eric Kendricks, Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters and Bruins Executive Senior Assoc. AD for NIL Strategy & Initiatives Erin Adkins. Jarmond: “We will identify, recruit and invest in a leader who has the vision, the confidence, the attitude, and the proven ability to return UCLA Football to national prominence, and we will provide the resources to compete and win at the highest level. That's our commitment to our alumni, fans and supporters.” (link)

More from American Commissioner Tim Pernetti on the Ovies & Giglio Show. On the league’s willingness to embrace change: “When you talk about unified media rights and you talk about conference naming rights and you talk about the jersey patch and you talk about whether or not we should eliminate the preseason polls in football – which I don't think serve a purpose anymore – we're comfortable talking about change because this industry has resisted change for too long. And maybe that's why we're in the situation that we're in.” Pernetti goes on to assert that “I won't dilute the league. Because every dollar matters. But…we're preparing for every scenario. You know, quite frankly, I'm a little tired of how this has all unfolded because college sports has a reputation for expansion to happen. It's like, let me take from that guy or from that gal to benefit myself and their result be damned. Right? So, it's always about tearing things apart. What I'm wondering is when are we going to start to build something different? Should some of these groups be talking about working together to create a more significant platform or a bigger conference or should there be some discussions of strategic consolidation at the Group of 5 level? Whether you do it or not, let's talk about change.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen comments on Football HC Matt Rhule hosting his own podcast and making appearances on The Pat McAfee Show: “Matt took a calculated – not a risk – but made a very calculated move this year in getting himself exposed in the media, whether it’s his own podcast or whether it’s on the McAfee Show. He did that for the right reason, and the reason is this: I met with the ‘95 team and talked to them about the biggest difference between the ‘95 team and [Nebraska now]. And I wasn’t here [for 1995], but I was close enough to watch. And [the difference] was Nebraska, was ‘IT.’ If a recruit had a chance to go to Nebraska, they went to Nebraska. Fast forward to today, we are not it – yet. We’re trying to get back there. And so the idea of recruiting – Nebraska does not recruit itself anymore. We have to give some effort, energy and do a little bit extra to get us back. I think Matt doing that and selling the program – because whether our fans watch the podcast or whether our fans watch McAfee – recruits, coaches, the potential recruits a year or two down [the line], they’re watching those shows, and that’s where they’re gathering their impression of the program. So the more we can do [the better]. And Matt happens to have a particular talent and skill. Put a microphone in front of him, he’s the best I’ve ever been around, coach or non-coach, just a great orator. And so I think it’s using his assets to help build and sell the program.” (link)

“Availability report. Not an injury report.” According to The Athletic’s David Ubben, that’s a key difference helping spark recent conversation about what college football teams report and the gray area around disclosing a player’s status in availability reporting policy. LSU Football HC Brian Kelly: “We all know everybody’s banged up a little bit. If we put everybody who was nursing something here and there, we’d have 20 guys on there. But truly, guys that are hobbled or not able to participate in a full practice, they should be listed on those reports.” Regardless, a gray area allows for adherence to the rule, while perhaps muddying its stated purpose to prevent “the existence of inside information that could be of use to people in the gambling world.” Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze: “I think we all should operate with total integrity and transparency on it. Period. I don’t really keep up with it a lot, so I don’t know who has done that or not done that. But my view on it is I think we all agree this is what we’re gonna do, and we should operate with 100 percent integrity.” Arkansas Football HC Sam Pittman: “We weren’t supposed to feign injuries. We do that. We’re supposed to be correct on our injury report. Some do. Some don’t. Most of the time you’re preparing for either or so you’ve got a plan A and a plan B. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it because it’s all about an integrity deal.” More. (link)

Illinois Men’s Basketball HC Brad Underwood sounds off on rule/eligibility changes, remarking: “If we’re going to [five years of eligibility], let’s get to it. I’m absolutely sick and tired of not having any rules or guidelines of what to do. This is getting to be a comedy as to how to do things, what it means. I think it’s probably a good thing if it helps the waivers and the court cases and helps give clarity to it. If we’re gonna go to it, let’s just get to it. If we’re not, great. Recruiting is completely different now than it’s ever been because of the rev share, and it’s based on how many guys you could possibly have back. … So, you have to save your rev share. Your distribution becomes very different. Recruiting high-level players becomes very different. So, all that scouting stuff and the stars means nothing. … If 5-in-5 happens, it will become a free-for-all again in the spring with guys hitting the portal. We just need some help and we need some guidelines and need some parameters and guardrails with which to recruit. This fall, this month of September, has gone from usually being our busiest month to actually one of our quietest because we don’t have any clue of how to go about our business. So, we’re recruiting but we’re not recruiting.” More. (link)

➤ The Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid tops the list of highest-paid NFL HCs for the second-consecutive year by earning an average annual value (AAV) of $20M, according to Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, who notes the cutoff to make this year’s top 10 was $13M, up from the 2024 cutoff of $9M, while half of the league’s HCs are now making at least $10M. The Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton ($18M AAV) ranked second, with Baltimore Ravens HC John Harbaugh ($17M), Los Angeles Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh ($16M) and Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin ($16M) rounding out the top 5. Tomlin, John Harbaugh and Reid currently rank as the three-longest tenured HCs in the NFL. Per Spotrac, coaching salaries have skyrocketed, but still remain just a fraction of top player salaries with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott the highest-paid player at $60M AAV and 106 players ahead of Reid’s annual salary.
