At the College Football Playoff Management Committee’s fall meetings, commissioners focused on governance, long-form agreements and a Korn Ferry organizational study rather than format changes, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark noted the committee is “comfortable” sticking with 12 teams next year, which is “probably why they are not too pressed in rushing to a decision.” Instead, power-league leaders are advancing a plan to form a working group of ADs from the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 to study formats from 16 up to 28–32 teams. As a starting point, some Big Ten officials are floating equal automatic bids for each power league (i.e. three to four each) in a 24-team model with one to two slots for the other FBS leagues and as many as six at-larges. Bigger fields could force the elimination of conference championship games and would reopen the ESPN deal, which currently covers only 12 or 14 teams. With a December 1 TV deadline looming, Clark expects “smaller group sessions” to convene before anything returns to the full body. If no deal is reached for 2026, the CFP will likely stay at 12. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti covers a wide range of topics on the Ovies & Giglio Show, including engaging with private equity/private capital firms. Pernetti explains there has “not been a successful business in American history that hasn't taken outside capital to accelerate their growth. Some work out well, some don't. You know, there are hostile takeovers. There's leverage buyouts. The thing I think that the industry needs to warm up to is there's a hundred ways to cut it, right? Like private equity, the word equity implies ownership and control. And I think that's what people worry about. … What I would say about it is I don't think anybody has fully determined how it should play out. My own personal experience in a couple of businesses that I had the opportunity and the fortune to run when I was within the Endeavor family or IMG played out really, really well. And I'll tell you why. Not about the money. If you pick the right partner in private capital, you get access to expertise and people that you don't get in the college business. And to me, this is not just about cash. It's about how do you find people that can bring capital to the table and help you grow your enterprise? Because if they're going to get in the boat with you to grow it, then why shouldn't everybody share in the upside?” Lots more. (link)

Hero Sports’ Sam Herder shares a deeper look at Sequence Equity’s pitch to privatize the FCS Playoffs. One sitting AD whose program has made multiple playoff runs in the past decade tells Herder: “We lose money. It’s a great product and tremendously undervalued. Surely there has to be another way. I think every athletic director, president, and commissioner will listen if something like this is presented.” Herder also observes that “while one of the lead point persons in this pitch does not have Ivy League roots, it is noteworthy that Sequence Equity’s co-founders (Marcus D. Stroud and Brandon M. Allen) attended Princeton. A source indicates that there isn’t necessarily a direct tie to this pitch being made because the Ivy League will begin participating in the playoffs. But the connection doesn’t hurt and likely made the interest stronger.” (link)

Utah State yesterday officially welcomed new AD Cam Walker, who remarked: "There's never been a period of greater change in college athletics than the last four years; the entire industry has been spun on its head. That is why we will work every day to stay ahead, to be proactive, to be informed and ready, so when tomorrow comes, we're already where we need to be.” Walker also said of NIL: “We have to be elite in that space, and you have to be elite in two areas. You have to have enough to spend. Competition is going to be spending it, but then we have to spend it wisely. We have to make sure that we're spending it the best way we can. … The easy thing is to say we're going to go to donors and we're just going to ask them for more money, but that's not realistic and that's not the right approach. Resources aren't just generated from fundraisers, they're generated from ticket sales, they're generated from concessions. … We have to maximize all of those resources." Maximizing those resources includes making athletic events more experiential for fans attending games, and Walker asks: "What can make it different when they come? What experience can they have when they come to the stadium that they can't have at home? It's got to be enjoyable, and we've got to make it a spot where they can build memories. … We’re in the entertainment business. It’s got to be entertaining. Win, lose or draw, people need to leave saying, ‘That was a good time.’ Some of my best experiences in life are at sporting events.” (link, link)

CollegeAD shares the particulars of Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt’s contract extension, which will take him through July 31, 2030. Alnutt will continue to earn an annual base salary of $345K, and is also eligible for supplemental compensation. While most incentives remain unchanged from his original contract, the following additions were made: If football, men's basketball, and/or women's basketball wins a MAC Tournament Championship, Alnutt will notch $15K per win If football earns a bowl game appearance, he will receive $10K. If men’s basketball posts a winning regular-season record in either 2025-2026 or 2026-2027, Alnutt earns another $10K. Both Alnutt and UB retain the right to terminate the contract at any time. If UB terminates without cause, Alnutt will be owed the following payments: 2025-2026: $650K; 2026-2027: $400K; 2027-2028: $300K; 2028-2029: $250K; 2029-2030: $150K. Alnutt would owe the same amounts on the same timetable should he leave for another college athletics role. (link)

More from LMU AD Craig Pintens & new Maryland AD Jim Smith on the inaugural episode of the CRO.ticker’s Margins of Victory podcast. Smith points out the Terps will benchmark local pro teams, such as the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders, to help calculate ticket prices. “We’re really fortunate that we have two other football teams in the market. I look at that as a benefit because it does a couple of things. It gives us a good sense for what people will pay for really good football. That's one. And the second is it gives us two other sets of football fan bases to be able to market to because we're not competing with the Commanders and the Ravens. So we can make both of those fan bases our team. But by doing a real pricing analysis on how they price, it gives us an understanding of what the market will bear.” Lots more in the full podcast. Indiana football student-athlete Louis Moore can suit for the Hoosiers this season after Dallas County Judge Dale Tillery ruled that the NCAA's eligibility rule violates the Texas Antitrust Act. According to Tillery, the temporary injunction order was necessary because of "the immediate need to allow Moore to play football for Indiana for the 2025-26 season, in order to prevent irreparable harm to Moore's career-including development with the team, the opportunity to play with the team, and the opportunity to effectuate his NIL deal." The Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee is looking to introduce new legislation that would eliminate the rule limiting foreign tours to one year out of every four, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who notes the new policy would allow programs to make such trips every year. Committee Chair/Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly is working with Global Sports and Events and hopes to get legislation passed in December or January. (link)

Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz calls it a “disappointing choice” for the SEC to remain at 85 scholarships while the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC can have 105 scholarships. Drinkwitz explains on The Paul Finebaum Show that “there’s a lot of times when the head coaches – those are high-level meetings. They don’t necessarily want our opinions. I’m sure there’s real reasons for it, I’m sure there’s probably holistic reasoning for it, but if it’s just decisions made strictly about football and the competitive excellence the SEC needs to have, I’m not sure it’s the right decision.” (link)

➤ Arizona State will begin using facial recognition technology on a trial basis for student admission to football games as early as the October 25 matchup with Houston. Sun Devils Senior Assoc. AD for Ticketing and Business Analytics Mike Meitin believes the system will be received well by students and, eventually, by all fans. “We feel really confident about it. As a student, if you enroll in this program, you walk through the gate and walk by the scanner, and it will turn green without ever having to take out your ticket or your phone.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
➤ Cal State Bakersfield Men’s Basketball HC Rod Barnes is stepping down, per multiple reports. (link)
➤ SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam: “Based on a handful of sources I talked with today, it is much more likely that the coach openings in the WNBA are filled by W or NBA assistants rather than college head coaches. Simply put, most WNBA owners aren't willing to pay top dollar to poach the best college coaches. You might say, ‘But what about (former Utah HC) Lynne Roberts and (former FGCU HC) Karl Smesko last year?’ Sure, but both were making $500-750K in college. They got raises. To get a big-name coach (like, say for example, (Notre Dame’s Niele Ivey), that check has to be much much much bigger – at least seven figures per year. On another note, based on the sources I heard from, expect (Los Angeles Lakers AC) Lindsey Harding to be a strong candidate for the New York Liberty. She was a finalist for the Washington Mystics' gig last year.” (link)

Investment firm Sequence Equity was the group behind a pitch made to FCS commissioners about a privatized FCS Playoff this week, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who adds more, “According to the proposal, the new playoff would be run by a new private entity. FCS conferences would own the majority of the new entity, but Sequence Equity would take a minority stake and offer ‘tens of millions of dollars in investment,’ the source said. [...] It’s unclear when this entity could get up and running, as the concepts are still in the educational and discussion stages. But sending the proposal to the NCAA for discussion was described by the source as the next step.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with a SCORE Act update: “Over the last few days, the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten sent letters to Congress in support of the SCORE Act. The ACC is finalizing its own letter and intends to send it to lawmakers. Notable given the pushback from some conferences seeking changes to the legislation.” (link)

College Football Playoff decision makers are “comfortable” with remaining at the current 12-team format, per CBS Sports’ Jon Talty, who adds that CFP Executive Director Rich Clark mentioned playoff leaders only devoted about 20 minutes of Wednesday’s four-hour meeting to the topic despite a looming December 1st deadline for deciding next year’s format. Clark: “My sense is the room's comfortable with (staying at 12) if that's where we go and that's probably why they're not too pressed with rushing to a decision. If they can find time to have a discussion and make a decision, they want to have that opportunity. So if we end up staying at 12 we are talking about next year, so we have time to implement all the way up through (Dec. 1) and then we'll know what it is at that point.” Per Talty, Clark also acknowledged that much of the playoff discussion occurs in smaller groups away from the larger one, with the smaller groups of commissioners not having had much time to dig into specifics. Clark: “They've been dealing with so many other issues beyond football even that they just haven't had a lot of time to really lean into format. So they want to find that time...it's really a matter of them having time to do it, and they just haven't found that.” (link)

The Big Ten has “no immediate plans” to join the Big 12, SEC and ACC in requiring its schools to play a minimum of 10 Power 5 conference opponents, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy, who notes “with nothing on the Big Ten’s immediate horizon regarding playing the same number of power conference opponents as the other three leagues, don’t expect any resolution on the 2026 College Football Playoff format. … Expect the 2026 playoff to be the same 12-team model as in 2024 and 2025.” Per McMurphy, the “perplexing thing about the Big Ten not requiring its league members to play a 10th power conference game is that at this summer’s Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, league officials and coaches literally pounded their chests about playing the toughest conference schedule. For one reason: the Big Ten played nine league games, while ‘that other conference’ (the SEC) only played eight.” More. (link)

Facing chaos with as many as four different collectives all working to bring Penn State up to speed with the competition, The Athletic’s Ralph Russo writes that per Nittany Lions AD Pat Kraft, the best way to get things operating efficiently enough to help football compete at the highest level was to join forces into a single collective, Happy Valley United. Kraft: “Just from a pure communication and efficiency standpoint, it didn’t make sense to have our base split.” Happy Valley United Director of Operations Rich Stankiewicz: “Penn State having a baseline of money that we can help [players not feel they’re sacrificing to stay at PSU] is great. We needed to get to a point where we had the baseline so it isn’t kids making a decision of money or no money. It’s no longer that decision. [...] There are egos involved. These are high-powered people involved in all of the groups: industry heads, high-profile former athletes, high-profile former coaches. The No. 1 thing for everyone is they care about Penn State. So many passionate opinions because they care about Penn State.” More. (link)

As part of its Candid Coaches series, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander polled roughly 100 Division I coaches on how much of their schools’ revenue sharing money they believe should go to Men’s Basketball. Of coaches at schools with FBS football programs, 56% believed that somewhere between 25-30% of their school’s rev share cap should go to the sport, while 35% thought somewhere between 15-20% and 9% answered somewhere between 30-40%. For coaches at non-FBS football program schools, 29% of coaches believed that somewhere between 90-95% of that money should go to their sport, while 27% answered somewhere between 70-80%. One coach at a school with an FBS football program remarked: “Twenty-percent minimum … I believe it's a matter of time before pretty much 100% of revenue-share will go to football and men's basketball. ADs just need cover. They want to put their money in the sports that actually generate revenue,” while a non-FBS football school coach added: “Putting myself in my AD's shoes, by not having football, I believe 70% of the rev-share should go to men's basketball. Our ability to make an NCAA tournament appearance would change the trajectory of [our] university enrollment.” More. (link)

The New York Post’s Zach Braziller reports Wagner Men’s Basketball HC Donald Copeland is currently serving a suspension while under investigation for the alleged mistreatment of players with accusations including the verbal abuse of several players and the refusal of water breaks during strenuous practices. According to the Post, “Copeland has not yet been found responsible of the allegations, but multiple complaints were sent to school administrators at the Staten Island-based college that sparked the investigation. Only two players returned from last year’s team, and sources said that was primarily the result of Copeland’s behavior.” Per Braziller, Copeland, Wagner’s Athletic Department and AD Walt Hameline didn’t respond to requests for comment on the matter. Former North Carolina Provost Chris Clemens argues in a lawsuit against the university that UNC and its board of trustees demonstrated a "systematic misuse of closed sessions to hide policy debates from public view.” Clemens alleges three instances related to the athletic department, with the biggest being the hire of Football HC Bill Belichick. According to the suit, Clemens claims the trustees called an "emergency meeting" on December 12 and illegally conducted a closed session to discuss and approve the hiring of Belichick. The board followed by affirming the hire and the contract terms. Clemens also accuses the board of holding a closed session in November 2023 to compare the finances of ACC membership with that of the Big Ten and SEC. From the complaint: “Each episode follows the same pattern: the Board invokes a statutory exemption, enters closed session, then discusses broad policy or budget matters that must be debated publicly. The Board compounds these violations by maintaining inadequate general accounts that prevent public understanding of what transpired." (link)

Fan interest in Wisconsin’s volleyball program is reaching historic new levels, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s John Steppe, who notes that UW has the best average attendance in the country as of September 23 with 8,620 fans flocking to the Field House or Kohl Center per match. That is barely ahead of Nebraska’s 8,602 fans per match. No other program is averaging more than 6,000 fans per match. While the Badgers have enjoyed strong attendance over the years, Steppe points out that 8,620 fans per game in 2025 “even outpaces the program’s existing all-time attendance record of 7,761 fans per game in 2022 – the year following the Badgers’ national championship. Badgers Deputy AD/CRO Mitchell Pinta: “We’re really, really excited; we’re going to exceed $2M in volleyball ticket sales for the first time ever. And we’re largely sold out for the rest of our matches at the Field House for the remainder of the season.” To compare, UW brought in around $1.6M in ticket revenue in 2023, and Pinta notes the uptick is the result of the team’s success, but also “an increase in pricing, a creation of new, differentiated premium products — group sales on Bucky’s Balcony in the Field House, for example — and then it’s been the ability to have more matches at the Kohl Center,” which has a capacity of over 17K. Pinta adds: “If there’s a saturation point on the demand for Wisconsin volleyball, we certainly have not seen it yet. So we’re excited to continue to explore different ways to grow volleyball. We’ve talked a lot in the past obviously about playing in different places like Milwaukee and things like that. It’s all on the table. And I’m really excited to have a partner in Coach [Kelly] Sheffield who’s thinking the same way as myself and Mac (Badgers AD Chris McIntosh) on how we want to grow the sport.” (link)

The NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs have selected Playfly Sports to assist with selling sponsorships in Ireland and the United Kingdom, according to SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who notes the team “obtained commercial rights in those countries for the first time in May as part of the NFL’s global markets program. Those rights, which five other teams have in Ireland and eight other teams have in the U.K., mirror the rights to sell media and sponsorship deals all NFL teams enjoy in their natural home territories.” As part of the agreement, Playfly will “identify and structure” deals with prominent brands in the British Isles, and develop activations. Financial terms of the relationship were undisclosed. (link)
