Cal Poly hires Stanford Deputy AD for External Relations Carter Henderson as its next AD. President Jeffrey D. Armstrong: “As we searched for a new athletic director to carry our momentum forward, it became clear that Carter's background and experience would be a tremendous benefit to the university. He has the vision and strategy and the deep experience with operations, communications and fundraising to help our student-athletes and our coaches reach even greater heights.” CSA Search & Consulting assisted Cal Poly with the process. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds context to reports of the potential privatization of the FCS Playoffs via an investment from Sequence Equity: “For one, according to NCAA Rule 31.2.1.1, all NCAA members are required to participate, if selected, in the NCAA championship or in no postseason at all. The decision to eliminate the FCS playoff would require approval from its sport-specific committee, the FCS Oversight, followed by approval from the new NCAA Administrative Committee, and then, after that, the Division I Board of Directors. However, there is another hurdle: moving the FCS playoffs out from under the NCAA umbrella may come with consequences, as it may impact the NCAA’s $115 million media rights package with ESPN — a deal that incorporates 40 other sport championships. What happens now? It remains to be seen, but FCS officials are expected to continue talks over the coming weeks with the earliest implementation date of 2027. (link)

Athletic Admin’s KC Smurthwaite includes this nugget from a sitting AD in a piece on the FCS Playoffs topic for HERO Sports: “We lose money. It’s a great product and tremendously undervalued. Surely there has to be another way.” Another unnamed AD: “People realize we are being operated like the track and field championships, right? Same per diem, same setup. We are lumped in with everything else they do, and that’s not right.” (link)
|
Dellenger with more as he reports “DI commissioners this week in Chicago received an update on the long-discussed concept of permitting schools to outfit player jerseys with sponsorship patches. The legislation is expected to be approved in time for patches to be added to uniforms as soon as next fall. There is disagreement, however, on who should set & control standards related to jersey patches - schools, conferences or the national association. Most involved feel strongly in restricting the number of patches as to avoid overexposure (ie NASCAR).” (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond announces the five-member search committee to assist him in the search for the Bruins’ next Football HC. The quintet includes: Wasserman Founder/CEO Casey Wasserman, ESPN Basketball Analyst/Washington Commanders (NFL) Advisor Bob Myers, 10-year NFL pro Eric Kendricks, Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters and Bruins Executive Senior Assoc. AD for NIL Strategy & Initiatives Erin Adkins. Jarmond: “We will identify, recruit and invest in a leader who has the vision, the confidence, the attitude, and the proven ability to return UCLA Football to national prominence, and we will provide the resources to compete and win at the highest level. That's our commitment to our alumni, fans and supporters.” (link)

More from American Commissioner Tim Pernetti on the Ovies & Giglio Show. On the league’s willingness to embrace change: “When you talk about unified media rights and you talk about conference naming rights and you talk about the jersey patch and you talk about whether or not we should eliminate the preseason polls in football – which I don't think serve a purpose anymore – we're comfortable talking about change because this industry has resisted change for too long. And maybe that's why we're in the situation that we're in.” Pernetti goes on to assert that “I won't dilute the league. Because every dollar matters. But…we're preparing for every scenario. You know, quite frankly, I'm a little tired of how this has all unfolded because college sports has a reputation for expansion to happen. It's like, let me take from that guy or from that gal to benefit myself and their result be damned. Right? So, it's always about tearing things apart. What I'm wondering is when are we going to start to build something different? Should some of these groups be talking about working together to create a more significant platform or a bigger conference or should there be some discussions of strategic consolidation at the Group of 5 level? Whether you do it or not, let's talk about change.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen comments on Football HC Matt Rhule hosting his own podcast and making appearances on The Pat McAfee Show: “Matt took a calculated – not a risk – but made a very calculated move this year in getting himself exposed in the media, whether it’s his own podcast or whether it’s on the McAfee Show. He did that for the right reason, and the reason is this: I met with the ‘95 team and talked to them about the biggest difference between the ‘95 team and [Nebraska now]. And I wasn’t here [for 1995], but I was close enough to watch. And [the difference] was Nebraska, was ‘IT.’ If a recruit had a chance to go to Nebraska, they went to Nebraska. Fast forward to today, we are not it – yet. We’re trying to get back there. And so the idea of recruiting – Nebraska does not recruit itself anymore. We have to give some effort, energy and do a little bit extra to get us back. I think Matt doing that and selling the program – because whether our fans watch the podcast or whether our fans watch McAfee – recruits, coaches, the potential recruits a year or two down [the line], they’re watching those shows, and that’s where they’re gathering their impression of the program. So the more we can do [the better]. And Matt happens to have a particular talent and skill. Put a microphone in front of him, he’s the best I’ve ever been around, coach or non-coach, just a great orator. And so I think it’s using his assets to help build and sell the program.” (link)

“Availability report. Not an injury report.” According to The Athletic’s David Ubben, that’s a key difference helping spark recent conversation about what college football teams report and the gray area around disclosing a player’s status in availability reporting policy. LSU Football HC Brian Kelly: “We all know everybody’s banged up a little bit. If we put everybody who was nursing something here and there, we’d have 20 guys on there. But truly, guys that are hobbled or not able to participate in a full practice, they should be listed on those reports.” Regardless, a gray area allows for adherence to the rule, while perhaps muddying its stated purpose to prevent “the existence of inside information that could be of use to people in the gambling world.” Auburn Football HC Hugh Freeze: “I think we all should operate with total integrity and transparency on it. Period. I don’t really keep up with it a lot, so I don’t know who has done that or not done that. But my view on it is I think we all agree this is what we’re gonna do, and we should operate with 100 percent integrity.” Arkansas Football HC Sam Pittman: “We weren’t supposed to feign injuries. We do that. We’re supposed to be correct on our injury report. Some do. Some don’t. Most of the time you’re preparing for either or so you’ve got a plan A and a plan B. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it because it’s all about an integrity deal.” More. (link)

Illinois Men’s Basketball HC Brad Underwood sounds off on rule/eligibility changes, remarking: “If we’re going to [five years of eligibility], let’s get to it. I’m absolutely sick and tired of not having any rules or guidelines of what to do. This is getting to be a comedy as to how to do things, what it means. I think it’s probably a good thing if it helps the waivers and the court cases and helps give clarity to it. If we’re gonna go to it, let’s just get to it. If we’re not, great. Recruiting is completely different now than it’s ever been because of the rev share, and it’s based on how many guys you could possibly have back. … So, you have to save your rev share. Your distribution becomes very different. Recruiting high-level players becomes very different. So, all that scouting stuff and the stars means nothing. … If 5-in-5 happens, it will become a free-for-all again in the spring with guys hitting the portal. We just need some help and we need some guidelines and need some parameters and guardrails with which to recruit. This fall, this month of September, has gone from usually being our busiest month to actually one of our quietest because we don’t have any clue of how to go about our business. So, we’re recruiting but we’re not recruiting.” More. (link)

The Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton ($18M AAV) ranked second, with Baltimore Ravens HC John Harbaugh ($17M), Los Angeles Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh ($16M) and Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin ($16M) rounding out the top 5. At the College Football Playoff Management Committee’s fall meetings, commissioners focused on governance, long-form agreements and a Korn Ferry organizational study rather than format changes, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. CFP Executive Director Rich Clark noted the committee is “comfortable” sticking with 12 teams next year, which is “probably why they are not too pressed in rushing to a decision.” Instead, power-league leaders are advancing a plan to form a working group of ADs from the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12 to study formats from 16 up to 28–32 teams. As a starting point, some Big Ten officials are floating equal automatic bids for each power league (i.e. three to four each) in a 24-team model with one to two slots for the other FBS leagues and as many as six at-larges. Bigger fields could force the elimination of conference championship games and would reopen the ESPN deal, which currently covers only 12 or 14 teams. With a December 1 TV deadline looming, Clark expects “smaller group sessions” to convene before anything returns to the full body. If no deal is reached for 2026, the CFP will likely stay at 12. American Commissioner Tim Pernetti covers a wide range of topics on the Ovies & Giglio Show, including engaging with private equity/private capital firms. Pernetti explains there has “not been a successful business in American history that hasn't taken outside capital to accelerate their growth. Some work out well, some don't. You know, there are hostile takeovers. There's leverage buyouts. The thing I think that the industry needs to warm up to is there's a hundred ways to cut it, right? Like private equity, the word equity implies ownership and control. And I think that's what people worry about. … What I would say about it is I don't think anybody has fully determined how it should play out. My own personal experience in a couple of businesses that I had the opportunity and the fortune to run when I was within the Endeavor family or IMG played out really, really well. And I'll tell you why. Not about the money. If you pick the right partner in private capital, you get access to expertise and people that you don't get in the college business. And to me, this is not just about cash. It's about how do you find people that can bring capital to the table and help you grow your enterprise? Because if they're going to get in the boat with you to grow it, then why shouldn't everybody share in the upside?” Lots more. (link)

Hero Sports’ Sam Herder shares a deeper look at Sequence Equity’s pitch to privatize the FCS Playoffs. One sitting AD whose program has made multiple playoff runs in the past decade tells Herder: “We lose money. It’s a great product and tremendously undervalued. Surely there has to be another way. I think every athletic director, president, and commissioner will listen if something like this is presented.” Herder also observes that “while one of the lead point persons in this pitch does not have Ivy League roots, it is noteworthy that Sequence Equity’s co-founders (Marcus D. Stroud and Brandon M. Allen) attended Princeton. A source indicates that there isn’t necessarily a direct tie to this pitch being made because the Ivy League will begin participating in the playoffs. But the connection doesn’t hurt and likely made the interest stronger.” (link)

Utah State yesterday officially welcomed new AD Cam Walker, who remarked: "There's never been a period of greater change in college athletics than the last four years; the entire industry has been spun on its head. That is why we will work every day to stay ahead, to be proactive, to be informed and ready, so when tomorrow comes, we're already where we need to be.” Walker also said of NIL: “We have to be elite in that space, and you have to be elite in two areas. You have to have enough to spend. Competition is going to be spending it, but then we have to spend it wisely. We have to make sure that we're spending it the best way we can. … The easy thing is to say we're going to go to donors and we're just going to ask them for more money, but that's not realistic and that's not the right approach. Resources aren't just generated from fundraisers, they're generated from ticket sales, they're generated from concessions. … We have to maximize all of those resources." Maximizing those resources includes making athletic events more experiential for fans attending games, and Walker asks: "What can make it different when they come? What experience can they have when they come to the stadium that they can't have at home? It's got to be enjoyable, and we've got to make it a spot where they can build memories. … We’re in the entertainment business. It’s got to be entertaining. Win, lose or draw, people need to leave saying, ‘That was a good time.’ Some of my best experiences in life are at sporting events.” (link, link)

CollegeAD shares the particulars of Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt’s contract extension, which will take him through July 31, 2030. Alnutt will continue to earn an annual base salary of $345K, and is also eligible for supplemental compensation. While most incentives remain unchanged from his original contract, the following additions were made: If football, men's basketball, and/or women's basketball wins a MAC Tournament Championship, Alnutt will notch $15K per win If football earns a bowl game appearance, he will receive $10K. If men’s basketball posts a winning regular-season record in either 2025-2026 or 2026-2027, Alnutt earns another $10K. Both Alnutt and UB retain the right to terminate the contract at any time. If UB terminates without cause, Alnutt will be owed the following payments: 2025-2026: $650K; 2026-2027: $400K; 2027-2028: $300K; 2028-2029: $250K; 2029-2030: $150K. Alnutt would owe the same amounts on the same timetable should he leave for another college athletics role. (link)

More from LMU AD Craig Pintens & new Maryland AD Jim Smith on the inaugural episode of the CRO.ticker’s Margins of Victory podcast. Smith points out the Terps will benchmark local pro teams, such as the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders, to help calculate ticket prices. “We’re really fortunate that we have two other football teams in the market. I look at that as a benefit because it does a couple of things. It gives us a good sense for what people will pay for really good football. That's one. And the second is it gives us two other sets of football fan bases to be able to market to because we're not competing with the Commanders and the Ravens. So we can make both of those fan bases our team. But by doing a real pricing analysis on how they price, it gives us an understanding of what the market will bear.” Lots more in the full podcast. Indiana football student-athlete Louis Moore can suit for the Hoosiers this season after Dallas County Judge Dale Tillery ruled that the NCAA's eligibility rule violates the Texas Antitrust Act. According to Tillery, the temporary injunction order was necessary because of "the immediate need to allow Moore to play football for Indiana for the 2025-26 season, in order to prevent irreparable harm to Moore's career-including development with the team, the opportunity to play with the team, and the opportunity to effectuate his NIL deal." The Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee is looking to introduce new legislation that would eliminate the rule limiting foreign tours to one year out of every four, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, who notes the new policy would allow programs to make such trips every year. Committee Chair/Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly is working with Global Sports and Events and hopes to get legislation passed in December or January. (link)

Missouri Football HC Eli Drinkwitz calls it a “disappointing choice” for the SEC to remain at 85 scholarships while the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC can have 105 scholarships. Drinkwitz explains on The Paul Finebaum Show that “there’s a lot of times when the head coaches – those are high-level meetings. They don’t necessarily want our opinions. I’m sure there’s real reasons for it, I’m sure there’s probably holistic reasoning for it, but if it’s just decisions made strictly about football and the competitive excellence the SEC needs to have, I’m not sure it’s the right decision.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
➤ Cal State Bakersfield Men’s Basketball HC Rod Barnes is stepping down, per multiple reports. (link)
➤ SB Nation’s Mitchell Northam: “Based on a handful of sources I talked with today, it is much more likely that the coach openings in the WNBA are filled by W or NBA assistants rather than college head coaches. Simply put, most WNBA owners aren't willing to pay top dollar to poach the best college coaches. You might say, ‘But what about (former Utah HC) Lynne Roberts and (former FGCU HC) Karl Smesko last year?’ Sure, but both were making $500-750K in college. They got raises. To get a big-name coach (like, say for example, (Notre Dame’s Niele Ivey), that check has to be much much much bigger – at least seven figures per year. On another note, based on the sources I heard from, expect (Los Angeles Lakers AC) Lindsey Harding to be a strong candidate for the New York Liberty. She was a finalist for the Washington Mystics' gig last year.” (link)
