WashU AD Anthony Azama sits down with the Building a Champion podcast to dive into the Bears’ culture of success after bringing home two national titles last year. “I think it comes down to alignment, assignment, execution. I think we have great alignment with university leadership. We understand what their goals are, not only from the university but also from student affairs as far as those pillars. How does what we do feed into that and can we do it well enough that we feel like we can hang our hat on it and say we're best in class as far as the development of young people and getting them prepared? The alignment lets us know what our assignment is. Let's make sure we do what we need to do, do your job and not get involved in things that are not really our expertise. […] So the more we bring people along on this journey, in the long run, the better the relationships will be and the more alignment there will be, and so now we have a high level of execution. […] And so we're not trying to be anything other than what the resources that we have and the expectations the university has for us.” In an effort to rally the community around athletics’ successes, Azama says the Bears now handle championships the way the St. Louis Blues did with the Stanley Cup: taking it around facilities on campus, the chancellor’s office, the Board of Trustees and more. On his priorities for leading into the future: “We have a room full of people that have high character, low ego, and high output. So how do I keep that fresh? […] How do we continue to make sure we're culture-driven and we're purpose-driven? It's about our values, our behavior, and then that's going to lead to really great performance. Being the tip of the spear, I have to be the one that's showing people first, purpose second, details always, and making sure that I make time to make people feel valued.” (link)

The Championships Committee will seek additional feedback on championship bench size recommendations, as the group is committed to maximizing flexibility as sport committees see fit, but no changes will be made to current policies around what student-athletes beyond the squad size limit are allowed to do. The committee also recommended the Management Council not support membership-sponsored legislation around multiple AQs for leagues with more than 13 members of a sport and reducing the multisport conference AQ waiting period from two years to one. In tennis, the seven-point scoring pilot will be adopted beginning this season as a permanent rule change. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports “the 10 non-FBS conferences lobbying to amend the SCORE Act sent Congress a letter in support of its passing. The 10 reached an agreement with power leagues during meetings in Chicago last week over changes in the bill.” From the letter: “Our coalition of ten conferences representing one-third of NCAA Division I, more than 100 universities and over 40K student-athletes write in support of the SCORE Act (H.R. 4312) and its passage in the House. [...] We have consistently supported the key tenets of the SCORE ACT while also seeking important protections for all of Division I. Our coalition is encouraged by the Autonomy Four’s recent commitment to protecting Division I membership standards for all institutions long into the future by requiring a higher threshold to approve future changes. [...] We value the contributions from the student-athletes in the decision-making process, which includes our support for current and recently former student-athletes to have a minimum number of votes on certain intercollegiate athletic associations’ rulemaking bodies.” Full letter. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports “DI commissioners in Chicago received an update on the long-discussed concept of permitting schools to outfit player jerseys with sponsorship patches. The legislation is expected to be approved in time for patches to be added to uniforms as soon as next fall. There is disagreement, however, on who should set & control standards related to jersey patches - schools, conferences or the national association. Most involved feel strongly in restricting the number of patches as to avoid overexposure (ie NASCAR).” (link)

Indiana (DI) football student-athlete Louis Moore can suit up for the Hoosiers this season after Dallas County Judge Dale Tillery ruled that the NCAA's eligibility rule violates the Texas Antitrust Act. According to Tillery, the temporary injunction order was necessary because of "the immediate need to allow Moore to play football for Indiana for the 2025-26 season, in order to prevent irreparable harm to Moore's career-including development with the team, the opportunity to play with the team, and the opportunity to effectuate his NIL deal." Moore spent the first three years of his collegiate career at Navarro (NJCAA). (link)

The American Rivers has created two new committees overseeing awards and championships with the goal of advancing the goals of its three-year strategic plan. Of note: “The Championships Committee will focus on enhancing postseason opportunities for student-athletes. Its charge includes leading the implementation of a planned football bowl game, as well as coordinating a one-time championships festival that will bring multiple sports from the same season together at a neutral location. The committee will also oversee event planning, game operations, and execution in alignment with the broader strategic plan.” (link)
